I compiled this for someone at DroidForums and I figured I would post it here.
In order to complete all of these steps, you will need:
ROM Manager
Titanium Backup Pro
Root Explorer
SetCPU
Odin v1.3
A file manager like Astro to install the APKs.
SetCPU can be downloaded here for free: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
It can also be bought from the Market. The others also need to be purchased or downloaded.
In order to root, follow the instructions here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/33899-how-root.html
Here is a link for Mac users: http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...s/34188-rooting-using-mac-video-tutorial.html
ClockworkMod Recovery Installation instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021 You can also flash the new recovery with Rom Manager, but for now, I recommend the recovery in the link.
At this point, you should be rooted with CWM Recovery. Now, it's time to install Froyo.
Follow the link here, and you will find Odin files for quickly installing EB01: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...roms-w-root-new-clockwork-updated-2-11-a.html
NOTE: You will need to wipe when you go from 2.1 to 2.2. Be sure to back up everything before the upgrade.
Now, you will need a rom. I would recommend SuperClean by Adrynalyne: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910921 It includes a kernel and there are Voodoo and NonVoodoo versions. This will remove all bloatware, including TouchWiz and Bing. However, the browser will still search with Bing. Then, use the themes sub-forum to find a theme.
You can use ROM Manager-Download-sonofskywalker3 to find all sorts of options. Stock apps, de-Binged browsers, new boot animations, widgets, etc. Anything you didn't want removed can be downloaded there.
If you need to return to stock, you'll need to use Odin. Ask any questions in this thread and I will do my best to answer them. You can also post a thread on XDA(make sure it's in the right section!), or visit the IRC at: webchat.freenode.net channel: #samsung-fascinate
I take no credit for anything here.

Awesome writeup. Gonna be great for the people with the Google questions. Also I am assuming the frozen apparently will stay frozen even after rebooting?

It may have been an issue on other phones, but there's no established link here.

I'm not sure. I'll edit my OP and say it's very risky, since you are the only person I have heard of that it doesn't cause issues.
uh oh
I just deleted all these apps. Am i in trouble when froyo comes out?
It looks like wireless tether doesn't work for me, and I did delete 3G Mobile Hotspot, so maybe it makes sense to go slow at this before jumping in. I'm not having any problem connecting to wi-fi, though, so if that's all you want then maybe you'll be fine. I use backup assistant so I can't comment on what could happen if that's deleted.
Freezing/hiding apps seems to be the best way to make sure you aren't looking for backup apps somewhere...

Yes it is. That's why I recommend it. I also find it easier than moving them to the SD card with root explorer like a lot of people are doing, but to each his own.
EDIT: I tried Wireless Tether, and it started just fine. I didn't try connecting anything to it, but I know it at least starts. I can't tell if they blocked tethering or if deleting Mobile Hotspot affects it.

You'll have to use the system dump and restore them from that.

Wireless Tether started fine for me also, but my ipod touch couldn't see it at all an inch away. Maybe there's something else that we're missing? Can you try and connect to something and let me know if it works for you?

My iPod wouldn't connect either. I would try my computer, but I don't have a wireless card anymore since I moved the router up here and am wired into it. There's gotta be something to do. I played around with the channels and nothing worked.

Here's the system dump: http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/32839-fascinate-system-dump.html
I have removed [moved] both Backup Assistant and Mobile 3G Hotspot and I have no issues with Wireless Tether. Before assuming Mobile 3G Hotspot is the cause of your issues, try verifying Wireless Tether works for you beforehand. There was a thread dedicated to Wireless Tether not working by a senior member only to find out it was user error.
There's more than one way to move/remove apps and I'm sure we all can confirm deleting .apk files is NOT the best option. I've used Titanium Backup to freeze apps which I could not locate the .apk for, but I prefer moving the .apk files. This is because I've been in a force-close loop after moving a file and the only solution would be to move the file back and reboot the phone. This can be done via ADB. If you freeze an app and you get in a force-close loop you may not be able to use Titanium Backup's GUI to un-freeze an app.
I move to the SD card to free up space on the phone, which comes in handy if you're replacing stock apps from other places. Plus, it gives me an easy view of what to move to/from the /system/app folder if I need to put apps back when there is an OTA (or if someone asks me "what apps did you remove?")
Move/rename/freeze... pick your poison, but please don't delete.

Yup. If you delete, you have to handle the process of moving apps from the system dump. I don't think a factory reset would work, since the apps aren't there and it has nowhere to restore them from.
Just installed CMW and removed bloatware from these instructions, everything went great. Appreciate your time to do the write up.
I'm still interested in doing the lag fix, I did notice a difference with my phone. I ran it one week with it, and one week without and I've noticed a difference. Anyone else running it with all this setup?

The lag fix seems to have very mixed results. Some people say it has caused lag, some have trouble un-doing it, some notice no difference. So I haven't taken the risk. I also need the internal memory it takes away. I would consider it if it would fix those occasional stutters and freezes, and actually make a difference.

that being said, i'd appreciate one myself.
I am also dying for root on this phone. It has been 2 weeks for me and nothing. The phone is slowing down a bi due to all the metro crapware installed that I cant get rid off without root.
Programmerrrrrsssssssss, we neeeeeedddd ROOT on the Admire please!!!
I have to admit that i'm looking forward to one too. I'm sick of all the bloatware they load that turns itself on when you have no need of it.
Right now, after using Advanced Task Killer and then checking 1 hour later with no actual use on the phone, there is "voice search", "Visual Voice Mail" and "myMetro" that are all running and unkillable.

So no one bricks their phones... Many of these are self-explanatory and you can figure most out from the icons, but better safe than sorry.
These are located in /system/app so don't go deleting things you're unsure of.

So, I've rooted my Admire, but there are still apps I can't get rid of. I installed SSHDroid, and even that won't let me delete files. I can't freeze them either, with Titanium Backup (Wishing I would have saved the cash). Everything says its running as root, but there's obviously some problem. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hey Everyone,
I live in Sacramento CA and was told we have 3G here, but I've had my Admire since since Friday and still haven't seen a 3G on my phone.. Not even once! Is there something I need to do or download to make this happen? I tried taking out the battery and then calling *228 option 5 to update the prl, but still my phone is at 3019. My friend has had her Admire since Oct and today had our phones right next to eachother. She had 3G and I still have my 1X! The city we were in isn't even suppose to have 3G yet, and yet she had it! What is wrong with my phone??
Also I'm trying to root my phone, but I have no idea which site I should use to download the root.. I already have titanium backup (free version) and as soon as I'm rooted I will download the PRO.
Any help would be very very appreciated!!
Thank you!
Josh

That's quite an interesting request, I don't know of any bullet-proof solutions but turning account sync off and using a task manager to kill all non-essential running apps should mean that no apps attempt to use mobile data.
I've not used one but I'd imagine there are application level firewalls available for rooted phones, maybe someone else has experience with one?
Would be interesting to know which apps you want blocked?

thanks for the reply.
in perspective ive gone from a LG p500 to a i9305t haha huge jump for me.
ive only just rooted it and installed a custom rom so now i dont have no samsung bloatware running or any other non useful things running cause they didnt come with my rom . yeah i dont ever auto sync and since ive asked this i tick restrict background data while on wifi so pretty much alll my apps arent using BG data. now the only problem with a heavy task killer is it will kill my alarm all the time welln it used to on the p500. so i would have to install unistall everytime or freeze it i have rom manager pro i like the task manager in there. ill get on my phone and screenshot you whats in there after this maybe you could tell me whats actually running and whats not would be great.but from the looks of it barely anything i usually only play f1 2012 and ops 2 online so i want as much as possible incase lol. since the new rom its changed dramatically in my task manager.
application level firewall. what would that do mate?OH and also. i have TWO cpu/battery profiles in rom manager. one set for SCREEN OFF wihich i have it use 700mhz max 200 min and SCREEN ON max all the way. would that effect my active hotspot in anyway?like is being restricted by having that profile set?WAIT its always on charge while wifi is on. so if i make a new profile for when the charger is plugged in it shuold be set to full. but the screen would be off? so would those profiles clash in some way?thats why i only set 2 didnt wanna make it mess with the cpu all the time. sorry lol any help with anything is GREATLY appreaciated. im only registered on here so ill always be here now.

Like what sort of apps do you utilize since there isn't much as far as customizing that we can do without an unlocked bootloader. Edited title to help you out with this
Friendly Neighborhood Moderator
Used to do it for the different ROMs and using the MODs.
Now I've kind of outgrown the whole "crack-flashing" phase, and just root it to try any new ground-breaking MOD/ROM/App, etc.
Also, I just love knowing that I have the freedom of being Rooted.
XDA community is beautiful.
It's easier just to name the apps I mainly use when rooted:
AdAway (ad blocker)
Titanium Backup (backup app)
DroidWall (firewall)
Also uninstalling/freezing bloatware. Of course, it's awesome because you can flash ROMs, too.
Theming and removing bloat
I rooted so I could use Wallet, a few other apps and to remove bloat. I can't stand the crap Verizon puts on their phones. 3+ years ago, I'd flash a rom almost daily but I too have grown out of the crack flashing phase.
Well, at first I used admin/sudo/root to learn what made my computer work, and consequently what made it stop working, and how to repair things when the system didn't like what I did to it. Then how to make the computer more responsive through config edits.
When I got my first andriod it was pretty much the above all over again but way littler. I don't think I can count how many times I've soft bricked my phones by poking around in file systems I shouldn't have been poking around in.
Then I focused on how to make my devices faster without using prebuilt "OMGITSFASTHUMINAHUMINAHUMINA" script pack zips found across the internet and here. So learned how scripts worked in general to automate a lot of mundane functions.
Then, My buddy Kyle was working on a performance kang of liquid for the DX. I offered to help get more performance out of it. And then I eventually took over the ROM building in that project and a bunch of others for that series of devices.
Root isn't so much to me about "check it out bro I'm rooted, I've got stock cyanogenmod10 on, yeah high five" as it is about what I'm able to do with that ability and more importantly what I'm able to learn by actually using that ability. That's why I try to make my updater scripts print on screen what the script is doing... To potentially help someone who didn't know what was going on potentially learn a little bit.
Besides all that, I enjoy theming my UI. And with how much I end up flashing ROMs RomToolbox Pro has been my go to for app backups. :good:

Theoretically speaking you could run another ROM assuming it's compatible with the stock kernel.
It almost begs the question, maybe it's time for an In-Android (runtime) ROM flashing tool non-dependent on recovery. You wouldn't gain the other benefits of a normal recovery but you'd at least be able to flash ROM's, sans certain elements.
Aside from the performance and mod benefits, I find it therapeutic. Everytime I freeze/uninstall Vznavigator, Back up assistant plus, Verizon tones or anything Verizon related app I feel good knowing im doing mankind a favor by eliminating an atrocious and insulting excuse of an app.
Plus...theres nothing better than the feeling you get when you toggle that wifi hotspot switch on, especially after you've just successfully upgraded and kept your unlimited data by enduring the long, grueling and degrading task of dealing with the incompetence that is Vzw customer service.

I prefer to root just because of the awesome features.. Open source will always be popular and gives everyone their own chance to be different.
Remove bloatware, remove the persistent WiFi on the dropdown (which eats battery life), adaway so I get rid of stupid ads (I prefer to pay for the app and not the ads). ROM's when the bootloader gets unlocked (again).

Awesome thanks very much! I'll have to check this out and shut that annoyance down.

Well I did a bit of digging further and found this info. The YouTube video and DroidForums thread requires custom recovery, but the XDA-Devs link at the bottom seems to have a method for ME7 FW release. Trying that tomorrow.

I suggested something similar in the bounty thread. I was thinking something similar to boot manager where you could flash ROMs while in android to the SD... Could that work?

Sorry to bounce backwards in posts, but I was unable to locate an app called Adaway. Is it not able to be found in the app store?

Ok help!! I finally broke down and bought an unlocked zoom on the net. It is a great phone, we love it. I use ultrame for a carrier, now it comes down to this> The phone originally is ATT, I read all over here and am confused, if I root it is there a way to remove the ATT software?? will it really mess with the GPS?? will I loose other functions on the phone??? I am confused and yes I talk to myself at times. But I am getting fifty responses all different as to what to do, or just leave the phone alone? It works great, camera is beyond belief. any opinions?????????thanks red423

If you root with kingoroot nothing will happen to your gps.. Mine works just fine. After root, use titanium backup to delete the att bloat and you will have no worries.

I understand your worries but as the above member said, you have nothing to worry about. I have the International unlocked version (Not AT&T's) and I rooted it with 'Kingo Root' 2 weeks ago and everything is fine.
So, by acquiring root, you can use Titanium Backup to disable/freeze or delete AT&T apks. Now I suggest you only freeze them first, reboot your phone, use it a bit, make sure there are no errors happening since some APKs are needed by the system for your phone to function or else it will crash and not boot-up properly. So freeze first, test your phone, if all is good, delete them. I personally only delete apks that I am sure I don't need or those that I can re-download from the Play Store if need be. The rest, I just freeze them and forget about them. They can't act on their own if they're frozen =).
Btw, you can still disable/freeze apps without root by going to System settings - More - Application manager, and swipe to "All" category, and find the ones you don't want, click on them, and then click on "Turn Off". (I still prefer Titanium Backup since it shows me all apks and freezes all of them)
got the root
Ok I got the root, so the titanium says no freeze without donating, there are a few ATT apps that show up, on the zoom which ones have you guys just removed forever???? or is there another program like titanium to remove att bloat ware???? AND A BIG THANK YOU FOR REPLYING!!!!!!!!! I am all rooted now and want to make sure if i erase apk's they are the correct ones I cant freeze. red423

Great! glad it worked out. I had an S4 prior to this and this Zoom is quicker and smoother I just miss the bigger screen + resolution and thinner body.
There's no kitkat update yet but apparently they announced it and should be out in the coming months hopefully!
