That's quite an interesting request, I don't know of any bullet-proof solutions but turning account sync off and using a task manager to kill all non-essential running apps should mean that no apps attempt to use mobile data.
I've not used one but I'd imagine there are application level firewalls available for rooted phones, maybe someone else has experience with one?
Would be interesting to know which apps you want blocked?

thanks for the reply.
in perspective ive gone from a LG p500 to a i9305t haha huge jump for me.
ive only just rooted it and installed a custom rom so now i dont have no samsung bloatware running or any other non useful things running cause they didnt come with my rom . yeah i dont ever auto sync and since ive asked this i tick restrict background data while on wifi so pretty much alll my apps arent using BG data. now the only problem with a heavy task killer is it will kill my alarm all the time welln it used to on the p500. so i would have to install unistall everytime or freeze it i have rom manager pro i like the task manager in there. ill get on my phone and screenshot you whats in there after this maybe you could tell me whats actually running and whats not would be great.but from the looks of it barely anything i usually only play f1 2012 and ops 2 online so i want as much as possible incase lol. since the new rom its changed dramatically in my task manager.
application level firewall. what would that do mate?OH and also. i have TWO cpu/battery profiles in rom manager. one set for SCREEN OFF wihich i have it use 700mhz max 200 min and SCREEN ON max all the way. would that effect my active hotspot in anyway?like is being restricted by having that profile set?WAIT its always on charge while wifi is on. so if i make a new profile for when the charger is plugged in it shuold be set to full. but the screen would be off? so would those profiles clash in some way?thats why i only set 2 didnt wanna make it mess with the cpu all the time. sorry lol any help with anything is GREATLY appreaciated. im only registered on here so ill always be here now.

I noticed that was surpassing my data limit this month. I installed 3G watch dog to see if I could find the culprit. Obviously the browser is the main draw, and considering that I've already been spoiled with Flash I have been using it a lot. What I've noticed is that my second highest draw is a list of services, that used 20MB in a day. 3G watchdog groups these all together so I don't know which specific services is using so much data.
Anyone else seen this issue. Any way of seeing the data draw of each specific service?

20mb seems like a lot of data usage without your interaction. Did you install any apps not from the market? ie: sideload from a not so reputable site. Gingerblur the thing and start fresh. Then you can install the apps you want and leave out the ones you don't want.
Like on say, miui roms and other actually smart phones? something to make this bloody phone only actually use data when needed- if i get or send mms, only if i open browser, etc

I'm not familiar with MIUI but it's possible to create profiles with Tasker. It's capable of pretty much anything (activate data when a specific app opens, for example). Think I remember seeing someone do some stuff with MMS too. It can definitely be done.
Your phone IS only pulling data when needed. You and your phone just disagree on what constitutes a "need".
Are you on ICS or GB? Figure out what app is pulling the data. ICS data usage will show you, and let you disable the usage by app. GB will let you turn off background data in a blanket setting. On GB you can get an app like My Data Manager to see what app is using the data.
Juice Defender has settings too to disable data when your screen is off and such. But it's commonly believed to actually decrease battery life, especially the task killing aspect of it.

Im on GB, ICS pissed me off to no end at the moment. Guess ill look into tasker.
Android devices are the only ones I've noticed to be unable to just idle properly on their own, but right now im in magical land of Japan where using Nokia is too problematic.
Hmm, good enough unless tasker will eat more battery than active data connection
Hi Guys,
I ordered a Galaxy S3 on-line two days ago and expect to receive it on Wednesday/ Thursday and am preparing to move on fro mmy Razr XT910;
Here are some things I would like to know:
1. Does Market Enabler work ok? I have loads of paid apps, but a lot of time use a SIM from a country with no access to paid apps and ME is essential.
2. Does Carrier Name work? I have a long carrier name and it bothers me in the notification bar, I just set it to 3 dots so I know I have coverage and that is enough for me.
3. What app would you recommend to easily replace Smart Actions for basic stuff like turning off dat during the night - nothing fancy. I tried Setting Profiles, but it does not have a data switch.
4. I use TiB on my Razr and my Razr is running 4.0.4 ICS. Will I encounter restoring my apps and their data? No system data is backed up.
Thanks in advance,
Szadzik

1&2: I have never used these 2 apps but if they are just normal root apps it should be no problem at all, because rooting the sgs3 is a walk in the park
3: There are lots of switches now in the pull down notification bar with the sgs3. You have basically every switch you could imagine up there, so i just turn off mobile data manually when i come home. If you want to have it automated i used Juice defender for a few days and it did its job. But be aware any app that automates stuff like that runs background processes and consumes battery.
4. I did the exact same thing when i got my SGSIII a week ago coming from the DesireHD. No problems at all! As you said dont even try with system apps, but user apps.. no problemo.
If you run into problems with games, install it from the market and redownload additional data if needed and then restore only data from TiB. Sometimes there are different versions for different phones but data is the same.
5. Have Fun with your new Galaxy

Problem is, that these apps do not work on all phones, hence my question about them specifically.

I prefer automated as it means I do not have to remember and will not get woken in the middle of the night. Pull down switches are of no interest to me, as I prefer widgets that provide one click action

Thanks for the confirmation. I do not play games, so that is not a problem.
I hope I will enjoy it; it is my first non-Motorola phone since I started using Android 2.5 years ago (Mtorola Milestone, Motorola Milestone 2, Motorola Razr).
Market enabler works on the s3.. had tested it myself.

Any word on Carrier Name anyone?
Titanium works well but I would be a bit careful. I had been taking my app data from rom to Rom and phone to phone. I did the same on my Siii and found I was getting really bad battery life and odd results in better battery stats. Solution? I wiped and reinstalled my apps using titanium but only the app data from a very few apps. Massive difference

That is a piece of good info. I will see how it works.
Also remember, that if apps do not work well after restoring data, you can wipe their data from within TiB
Last question:
On motorola I use the sleep function that is very helpful for meetings where I do not want ANY interruptions at all.
Is there any way to simulate this on other Android phones?

Hello everyone. I bought myself the Samsung note a while back, only to find out that ATT wants you to pay extra in order to tether your phone. I decided to browse around here a bit and I ultimately rooted my phone in order to install Titanium Backup and freeze or remove the Tethering manager app. My issue is that the Tethering manager app is completely missing and thus I cannot disable it. I am running ICS 4.0.4 stock, so all I have is the superuser access icon and privileges.
Could anyone please help me tether my phone? I am not sure what to do at this point
Well no answers as of yet... perhaps it is not possible to tether this phone?
Do you guys need some screenshots or more detail perhaps? I am surprised no one replied yet
Tethering
FYI, I recived a letter from my carrier the other day, Letting me know that even though I disabled my tethering manager through titanium backup. They are fully aware of my usage and warned me if I continue using they will charge me extra monthly gb's fees. But if you still want to proced you may want to reflash rom.

Could you point me in the right direction as to how to flash my rom and maybe recommend me a custom good one?
Thank you so much for the response
Once again, the lack of replies is surprising. So I wonder if you guys need need any more information from me? I thought this would be a fairly easy answer to get.
Hi guys. i installed a firewall on my phone, and i just wanted to ask as to what basic stuff i need to allow to use internet.
What i mean is that i have firefox on the phone, and if i block everything and only allow firefox, i cant browse internet. but if i turn off the firewall, i can browse normally.
So i was just wondering what else i need to allow to use firefox.
i hope you guys get what i am trying to ask here.
You could try opening ports 80 (default http) and 443 (default https), but isn't your question better directed to the maker of the firewall?
ok got it to work, instead of blacklisting, i did white listing, and it worked well.
advisable for anyone who wants security to give it a try
if you would firewall your pc, then why not your phone?

Which firewall application did you use? I tried Android Firewall, but it would crash all the time, and it would not store or display activity logs. I previously used Droidwall on my original Incredible running CM7 (Gingerbread) and it seemed to work very well with the white listing of applications.
I removed Android Firewall from the Dinc 4G today and have no idea if anything else out there will work on ICS or Jellybean
