[Q] Stuck relocked and RUU error? - HTC EVO 3D

Well first of all I will say that I am running a CDMA EVO3D with HBOOT 1.58 and S-ON.
Now with that out of the way, I will explain myself. After rooting my phone after the ICS update, i installed some ROMs and encountered some problems. After researching what the problem was I had managed to keep S-ON and that is why some of the features were broke. Then after doing more research I decided that it would be best to go back to stock and redo everything. So right now I have relocked my phone and am still running a custom ICS ROM. I have tried numerous RUU attempts and I always get the ERROR [140]: Bootloader Version Error after it try's "Sending/Updating Signature". So what in the world do I do next

Which RUU are trying to flash and where did you get it?

That's a GB RUU and you are on the Sprint ICS build now so it won't let you downgrade with S-ON. You can get S-OFF if you need to flash GB for some reason, or use this Sprint ICS RUU instead.

Did your relock your bootloader before trying to flash it?
Here's a post with some troubleshooting info for flashing an RUU.

It is relocked and the main version as well as the cid is at the appropriate settings for Sprint. I also tried using a different wire and PC, still getting the same results

I kind of lost track of where things stand now. Could you please supply the following information:
1. The heading information (top 3 lines) from your bootloader
2. The RUU you are currently trying to flash and where you got it
3. How you are flashing the RUU and when you get the error
The 132 error is a signature problem that is usually caused by an unlocked bootloader and I don't understand how you are getting it unless the RUU you are flashing is corrupted.
You could try downloading the RUU.exe from here and make sure the MD5 matches.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, but this is the first three lines:
SHOOTER XC SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT=1.58.000
RADIO-1.09.00.0706
The RUU that I tried was the one you recommended in the comments and then how I am doing it is having USB Debuging on while in fastboot usb then running the RUU

How did you fix this?

[How-To] S-ON (security lock bootloader after s-off)/Return to stock

These steps will get you completely back to stock.
I want to first say thanks to the unlimited.io team for making S-OFF possible.
Secondly, by following these instructions you are acknowledging that should something go wrong and you brick your device, I am not at fault nor are the developers of the S-OFF method for the HTC RUBY. Follow these instructions at your own risk! I am NOT a dev, just stupid enough to be the first one (I think) To try this. I am not going to give instructions on how to use fastboot, if you are S-Off, then you should already know.
Third, you WILL be able to re-unlock your bootloader and regain S-OFF after you have followed these instructions. If you want to do so, there are other threads on how to do that.
And 4th, I have only tried this on a tmobile branded device. I have no idea if this works on any other device. I think it should, but I don't know for sure. If anybody wants to give it a try and let me know, then i will update the OP.
Now to the steps.
1. Download the stock ruu from here
2. Lock your bootloader by using the fastboot command "fastboot oem lock"
3. Reboot to system
4. Flash the stock RUU you downloaded by placing it in the root of your external sd card and renaming it PH85IMG.zip and rebooting to bootloader.
5. Once you have the stock rom reinstalled, set the security lock by using fastboot command " fastboot oem writesecureflag 3"
6. Profit?
That's it!
Special thanks to frodoboy for the idea and to krook6023 for posting the stock RUU's.
If this helped you at all, please remember to hit the thanks button!

I should have clarified, the steps are if you want to go completely stock, will update the OP.
Will it read "relocked" or "locked"? I thought being "completely stock" was not totally possible because it would always say "relocked".

No it wont. Sometimes when you flash ROMs after the ics leak it'll go back to locked . Only if you do it manually through fast boot it will say re-locked.

You can't downgrade back to GB once you've updated to ICS, if that's what you're trying to do. At least not very easily.

I dont know a way for going back to stock without being s=off. You could possibly flash the newest official release (ics, one that hasnt been modified) then relock your bootloader, but i think that it will show relocked rather than locked. Worth a try though.
Okay thanks for the input guys. It isn't a huge deal, I just didn't think there was enough "goodies" rom-wise for ICS, but there are some hardworking devs on here. Looking forward to the Sense 4.0 rom.

Thanks for the "thanks" dcm. Question though. I'm sure you've gone back to S-Off so did you have to do the wire trick again or just try the fastboot oem writesecureflag 0 or whatever it needs to be to go S-Off again?

I spent 3 hrs trying to solve the relocked and locked issue until finally I got it resolved. with the manual option to lock with hasoon tool, places *** RELOCKED *** in hboot, which clearly and obvious for any technician to see you tampered with the hboot files from stock. my reason for doing this to get my warranty back.
how did i fixed "RELOCKED" to show as *** LOCKED *** ? after the hasoon tool 3.2 relocked the bootloader i was challenged, but decided the first step would be switching the security off and on (s-off/ s-on)
first return to stock RUU through boot loader, then adb command fastboot oem writesecureflag 3 to enable s-on. *toggled it on
i reinstalled juopunutbear s-off again carefully following the instructions. with a paperclip grounding the phone and selecting for juopunutbear's modified files "y" enter.
then your *** RELOCKED *** shows as *** juopunutbear *** in hboot. (at first i thought I dig myself a bigger hole)
I used Hasoon tool 3.2 again to RELOCK bootloader, with the intention of reinstall the stock RUU again. however it still showed as *** juopunutbear *** with the message its already locked.
Now I installed the the Stock RUU again from bootloader. once complete back to the hboot, to show *** LOCKED *** and s-off Progress!!!
repeat enable s-on instructions by writing adb: fastboot oem writesecureflag 3,
now shows
*** LOCKED ***

how do we delete the line -OpenADSP-02.6.0.2226.00.0202?
it was added with the juopunutbear s-off hboot files, without that file the hboot would be 100 percent legit for the warranty!

No need to get rid of that. New phone from T-Mobile with HBOOT 1.93 and it had that line it . It looks like 1.90 is the one that doesn't have that line. Because my wife's phone is on 1.90 and she doesn't have it.
I'm going to be following the method in a few days. Can you guys confirm this all works as it should?

one thing i have learned is when flashing roms, make sure you have the correct firmware package, and hboot.. because some Roms use the VM Firmware from the leak a few months back, while others use the Sprint Firmware, also depending on the base of the rom you may need to flash a newer or older hboot

That should be the same thing as long as the RUU.zip is extracted from the RUU.exe and properly signed.
But coal is right about needing the bootloader locked/relocked to flash the RUU if you are S-ON (which the OP said he is), regardless of whether you use the RUU.exe or RUU.zip.

I don't think so.
You really should try flashing an RUU (.exe or .zip) with radio S-ON and an unlocked bootloader before you advise other users to try that. If you can do that successfully I will admit I am wrong in this thread. Otherwise, please stop insisting that it will work.
You have been ignoring the fact that the OP is S-ON throughout this thread and that really isn't going to help him at all.

Thank you. I will make one last post just so people are clear on the requirements for flashing an RUU with S-ON.
Here's a quote from mpgrimm2's My Running stock RUU Reference info post:
Note 3: If you previously did the HTC Unlock, you'd have to "RELOCK" BEFORE running the RUU.
To do this from fastboot type: fastboot oem lock

That guide has been around for a long time on XDA and another website and it has been used by a lot of people, including myself. If that information was wrong, I'm sure mpgrimm2 would have corrected it by now.
If you want to flash an RUU with S-ON and an unlocked bootloader, make sure that you relock it before flashing or you will get an error.
ramjet73
wloftus, I'm not saying you're lying since as you said, you were the one who did it and you say it worked for you. But, if one is s-on and unlocked, the ruu will error out with error 155. I google searched ruu lock bootloader error and found many sites that say the bootloader must be locked if s-on (see below). But, if one wants to try while leaving the bootloader unlocked, then be my guest. If it works, great; if not, then relock the bootloader.

There's a thread here that discusses, but people seem to have used various methods to solve it from restarting the bootloader to reflashing their unlock token. That's why I recommended in my first post of this thread that you remove/replace the battery and restart the bootoader.

Based on your bootloader version, it sounds like you have a Sprint Evo 3D. I have a guide here that should help you get the the right RUU flashed, then get root and S-OFF.

Then you need to give more specifics. If you can post the header information displayed in your bootloader here, and give the text of the error messages you are getting when you try to flash the RUU contained in the download, that will make it easier to help.
Also, please issue the following commands from fastboot and post the output here:
fastboot getvar cid
fastboot getvar mainver
ramjet73
Definitely post up the information ramjet73 is asking for.
Btw ramjet, you are quick. You always beat me to it!
Also curious if you are running the Ruu while booted up or from fastboot?
This seems blaringly obvious but if you are s-on, did you relock the bootloader?

My battery is too low to run RUU right and im about to go to sleep I will update with the exact wording tomorrow but it says that Do not have the right RUU for my device. and if i am remembering correctly it says error 155 but I cant be 100% positive.

He said in the OP that "I relock before using RUU but no matter what i get this message", but that's why I want to see his bootloader info and the text of the message he is getting.
I always recommend starting the RUU.exe with the phone in "fastboot usb" mode, but in theory it should work even if he is booted into Android.
Let's see what he has to say.

That mainver doesn't look right. I should be 2.89.651.2 if you are on hboot 1.58. If that's really the current mainver it would explain why you can't flash the RUU. I have no idea how that could have been changed without flashing something with an incorrect android-info.txt in a PG86IMG.zip file, which requires S-OFF, or someone setting the mainver incorrectly via ADB. Did you get the phone new or used?
Please verify that is correct, and if it is, it will need to changed before the RUU will take.
Also, when you try to run the RUU.exe again make sure the phone is in fastboot USB mode.
ramjet73
I will rerun the comand later to make sure, I always run it from fastboot usb. Also i got the phone as an insurance replacement. sprint sucks so bad there is no telling if the phone is actually new or not
ok.. update I redid your command this morning and got what you were looking for.

here is what RUU continues to give me no matter if im in fastboot usb or just the home screen
ERROR [155]: UNKNOWN ERROR
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your android phone.
Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.
This is using the one you have in your RUU file ramjet and when this happens i get the black HTC screen but it has no loading bar and nothing in all the corners

So your CID and mainver look OK.
The 155 error usually means your current bootloader is unlocked.
Try relocking your your bootloader, then remove and and replace the battery and start the bootloader. Since your bootloader is currently unlocked, the status should show as "*** RELOCKED ***". Make sure it does and that you are connected to your PC in "fastboot usb" mode, then try it again.
If that doesn't work, you can try downloading just the RUU.exe from here. It's the same one that is in the QADERSO .zip file, but it's worth a try.
ramjet73
during my previous attempt it was relocked, anytime i try running RUU from fastboot it says it cant run because my battery is too low (i have 93% battery and i dont get the warning if i run from the home screen) i cannot run RUU from fastboot because this is all i ever see even after re downloading

The battery low indicator in fastboot mode sounds like a hardware problem to me. If your battery isn't charging correctly it may be a problem with your cable or USB port. Many people have gotten the RUU.exe to flash successfully by changing to a different cable and/or PC, but if you can't do that I suggest fully charging the battery with the A/C adapter that came with the phone before trying to flash the RUU.exe again.
Flashing the RUU.exe with the phone in Android mode may be masking the problem, but something is not right with your hardware.
ramjet73
all done!! different computer and cord works.
Thanks alot
How do you relock the hboot? I'm getting the same error. Thanks.

my bootloader says relocked ive been trying to follow the guides but nothing seems to work, right now the phone is in the bootloader as thats all ive been able to access i have a virgin mobile evo 3d with hboot 1.58..can somebody please help me? or is my phone screwed?
Your phone is not screwed
What did you change? I'm guessing you either flashed a rom that's incompatible with your current hboot or you are s-on and need to flash the kernel separately.
What recovery do you have installed?

thanks for the response but i actually managed to fix it yesterday. idk what i changed but i was using the clockworld recovery but it wouldnt install the stock shooter file so i used 4ext and its all bueno now except it boots as a sprint phone now but whatever i can deal with that
Glad you got it!
I'd stick with 4ext. I have heard cwm doesn't play well with this device but have not experienced it first hand.
Yea I won't be putting that back on my phone now I have a question I believe I have the vmobile stock shooter on my pc I need to fast boot that to get my splash screen and stuff back right? Cause right now when I turn it on it says sprint

[Q] downgrade hboot 1.57 to 1.40

I have an Evo 3d with Virgin Mobile and I desperately want CyanogenMod 10.1
I am rooted, s-off, unlocked, and on hboot 1.57. To flash CM 10.1, you must be on an hboot version lower than 1.57. Is there a way to downgrade my hboot without reverting to s-on? because every link I find warns that you must be s-on, or you will irreversibly brick your phone.
I tried putting the PG86IMG.zip file with hboot 1.40 on my sd card and rebooting into bootloader, but I get an error message (see attached picture)
Please help, and Thank you in advance.

I'm on Sprint and by all means I'm no expert. I followed ramjet73's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
and was able to switch between hboot's version. Download QADERSO-V2-VM.zip and unpack to C drive. Install HTCDriver3.0.0.007 then open command prompt and do "cd C:\QADERSO\Root"
Then follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32259533&postcount=60

Thanks for the reply. I tried that method too and it didn't give me an error message, but when I booted into bootloader it still showed 1.57. Do you remember if you were locked when you downgraded? I think I read somewhere that you had to be but I don't really want to try it because relocking my phone will wipe everything.
And thanks again

I'm not sure where you got the hboot you are trying to flash but it looks like it's only setup for the Sprint CID and not Virgin Mobile.
Since you are already S-OFF you can follow the procedure in this guide and the hboots linked from that post are setup for both Sprint and VM CID's.

Revert to stock to run rumrunner

I have an HTC one that has been bootloader unlocked and running CM for some time. The bootloader version is currently 1.55 and S-ON. I'm hoping to revert to a rom that will work with rumrunner and allow S-OFF to happen.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've been looking for about an hour and can only find a leaked dev build of a rom for this phone that is flashable via recovery, the rest are all RUU files and I'm not familiar enough with RUU to know whether or not I'll take an permanent step in the wrong direction if I use one to upgrade.
Edit: please move to the right forum, I just realized I should have put this in another section instead of dev.

Since you are S-ON you will need to do the following:
Relock your bootloader
Leave your phone in FASTBOOT USB
Run this RUU 3.24.531.3 in Windows and follow the prompts
Follow rumrunner's OP instructions
The RUU will reset your phone back to stock and since your hboot is 1.55 this is the RUU which corresponds to that hboot.

Thank you for the quick reply, it worked beautifully. Now that I am S-OFF, if I am to run an RUU, will they set the device back to S-ON? Or do they leave that flag alone?

No, RUU will not set the flag to S-ON.
I keep getting error 155 during the RUU process. I have been researching and trying a bunch of different things but I cannot update the RUU
I'm running SkyDragon GPE 7.2 Android 5.1.1 hboot 1.61 with S-ON. I error saying RRU is older and errors.
