[Q] Internal format - cleans all settings ROM-wise? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Short question:
When I format "internal SD" (not the SD card) from CWM does this mean that all data ROM-wise was cleared? Or there are some other partitions that I can not access from CWM? Where I can read about this?

No idea what you mean in this context internal memory is internal storage .
The firmware is located in different partitions of the internal storage often called memory by some users .
The user wants to wipe these partitions of the current rom and its data .
Recovery mounts and storage format data cache system sd card and preload .

I meant "format internal sd" in recovery does not affect the Rom
(Google traduction is very bad lol)

There is no "format internal SD" in CWM.. However if you use the wipe data option it will not remove the rom you are using.. Just the data... Location where all your downloaded apps and settings are stored..
There is a format "/sdcard" option which will format your internal storage area.. Including everything on your internal sdcard.. Again will not delete your rom...

Yes here I was talking to / sdcard when I said "Internal SD Card" : D

For the OP
to wipe all data and the rom boot to recovery as i said and the method i have used for years on SGS .
Mounts and storage
Format cache system data preload and sd card .
Phone will now no longer boot no OS/Rom .
There is format internal sd card in recovery .
Running custom rom that needs rebuild so i just flashed Touch recovery .
formatted as above phone no longer boots no rom no OS empty .

[Q] partitioned internal sd (accidental)

hey all,
i was about to wipe and flash a new rom but accidentally clicked the partition sd in cwm. i think the size of the partition was 128mb...
i flashed the rom anyways and its like nothing happened. i plugged the phone into the pc and only shows the internal memory and my external sd card.
any1 had experienced this b4?
a little worried so need some input from others.
cheers
By internal u mean the 11.50gb partition and by external you mean ur memory card? Ofcourse you can only see those two.. You can see the 1.9gb partition of your phone because it is where the application gets installed and it is not used as storage for media etc(if you know what i mean)..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
from what i understand, the cwm 5.0 function "partition sd" means the 1.9gb partition. i think i partitioned that portion of the fone. anyway to reverse that? would a restore of backup clear that 128mb partition i made?
No, partition SD is the external one (micro sd)

CW Recovery Question

In CW recovery, when I do wipes i goto Mount and Storage then format / data, cache, system.
What happens if i select format / sdcard? will that erase my internal sd card?
Formatting an SD card will wipe it totally clean, so yes.
I've never used it but I suspect it's the same as formatting sd card from settings / storage. You would lose all your photos, media files and everything else on your internal SD card.

Plus phone will no longer boot .
Useful for a fresh install on a clean phone via download mode and Odin and stock rom .

[Q] NTFS Internal Storage

Hi all,
I've accidentally formatted my galaxy s2 internal storage to NTFS file system ( I want to format the external sd .. )
Now my s2 ( with CM9 and Syah kernel ) of course can't see the internal storage....
There is a way to recover my internal storage ??
Thanks
Reformat the internal storage in your phone, or with PC format in FAT32, or in CWM select format internal storage.

Hi cvrkimi,
I bumbed over a site with some instructions similar to what you need, only they are for a Galaxy Nexus. You could try finding similar.
Here's the link http ://www.droidforums.net/forum/galaxy-nexus-development/209149-backup-sd-partition-using-dd.html
Cheers,
Stefan.
Had the same issue now back to normal..

I took like 6 hours to figure this out since i had the same problem but its very simple to solve. To solve this just use odin software and reinstall back to the orginal Android OS (in my case 4.03 that i installed). Follow the mentioned instruction below in the site that xda doesnt let me provide the link to. Look for this title in google How To Download And Install Official Android 4.0.3 ICS Update On Galaxy S II Right Now and follow it
and you'll be back to normal.
Doing this should reset everything, install the new OS and redo the file system format by converting the accidental NTFS - FAT32. phew

wipe internal storage

Quick question here:
In TWRP recovery, if I choose to wipe internal storage, does it mean I only wipe the internal sd card or does it wipe the system ROM also? I am on the latest moded viperX+ TWRP
Thank you.

Yes it will only wipe the internal sd card . If you choose format internal storage, it will wipe everything. SO DON"T FORMAT
If you format interal storage why would that be a problem ?

When jumping between ROMs people generally like to keep the contents of their Internal Memory intact. It used to not really be a problem, because most Android phones had SD cards to act as their internal memory (this isn't technically correct, but you get my drift), and those SD cards would not be wiped when you formatted your system. Now that the phone's internal memory is actually part of the phone's filesystem, though, it requires a bit more effort to ensure you don't wipe out the contents of your "SD card" when formatting the phone.
but isnt internal storage just where photos/music and stuff is stored? yet, certain apps have folders there, and twrp keeps nandroids there, titanium keeps its backups there, but if you KNOW this, you copy these folders to pc first, then format, then copy back those folders and can still restore nandroids or titanium backups, right?

Which format? You should be able to format your SD card in your phone to FAT32 (or exFAT but not sure which) through Settings >> Storage >> Format.

I'm able to format/erase the External sd. I need to format/erase the Internal sd & in Settings >> Storage >> Format it doesn't give me the option to do so to the internal. Only the external.
I'm rooted & with TWRP. Tried to nandroid back up to internal sd but when it was almost done it said I didn't have enough space.
I had about 5gb before & now I have less than 1gb. I manually erase everything from the sd card but still I only have about 2gb left.
In Settings >> Storage >> Miscellaneous it says that I have 7.5gb used but If I add up the files that I can see it doesn't even add up to 2gb

In TWRP go to Wipe>Advanced wipe> Internal. Make sure you have backed up anything you want to keep from there to sd card and/or computer. Also make sure the backup you plan to restore is not on the internal, I know this seems obvious but it happens.
