Hello,
I have a question not really related to rom development but I hope it is okay if I still ask it here.
My question is: "How deep can I go with an App inside the Android System".
Let me explain. For my thesis in university I need to develop a possibility on how to monitore the behavior of apps. Achieving this by altering the Android System itself is a bunch of work but not very complicated or new. So my Prof asked me if I could do this with just an App - my first thought was NO, but before telling him I thought that I could ask you guys/girls
Topic is on: Monitoring Apps with focus on
- Contacts access (does App xyz actually reads the telephone book and which data is read).
- Calendar (does App xyz reads the calendar)
- Internet Access (does App xyz sends data to a server - to which server - or does this app retrieves information from the internet).
... (... means -> the more ideas the better )
So what I'd like to know is: Does anyone of you has an idea how I could achieve such thing and/or can you tell me how deep I can go into the system with a simple app (doesn't matter if via API or direct IPC or ...)
Thank you very much
Would it matter if the app required root access? I'm sure with root access you could achieve your goal. Not sure if you could without root.

Hi a rooted phone is the second possibility - rooting and installing an app is still better then the need to setup with a complete new rom.
Do you have any ideas how I could do this with a rooted phone - i thought about writing some kind of a rootkit but somehow this don't seems to delight my Prof
There seems to be a whole class of software that already does exactly that for not rooted and rooted variations. Check market for any backup software, backup contacts/logs/SMS/apps with data external SD or send to cloud. Pretty much every option seems to be covered under that heading.
Something for you to check out anyway

IF you have an idea how you can achieve the above mentioned using a custom rom then you already know which features you will be overridding, in that case create an app that does all that and show's some graphs and features on screen. Just like busybox installer stuff.
just had to say this cause of the threads title...thats what she said!

Please mind the "with an App" supplement

The App Breakdown
Faceniff
FaceNiff is an Android app that allows you to sniff and intercept web session profiles over the WiFi that your mobile is connected to.
It is possible to hijack sessions only when WiFi is not using EAP, but it should work over any private networks (Open/WEP/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK)
It's kind of like Firesheep for android. Maybe a bit easier to use (and it works on WPA2!).
Anti
ZImperium LTD is proud to annonce Android Network Toolkit - Anti.
Anti consists of 2 parts: The Anti version itself and extendable plugins. Upcoming updates will add functionality, plugins or vulnerabilities/exploits to Anti[
Using Anti is very intuitive - on each run, Anti will map your network, scan for active devices and vulnerabilities, and will display the information accordingly: Green led signals an 'Active device', Yellow led signals "Available ports", and Red led signals "Vulnerability found". Also, each device will have an icon representing the type of the device. When finished scanning, Anti will produce an automatic report specifying which vulnerabilities you have or bad practices used, and how to fix each one of them.
Droidsniff
little brother of DroidSheep
Droidsheep
is an Android app for Security analysis in wireless networks and capturing facebook, twitter, linkedin and other accounts.
fling
???
UsbClever
takes google chrom passwords
WiFi kill
Well, with this app you can disable internet connection for a device on the same network. So if someone (anyone) is abusing the internet wasting precious bandwidth for a Justin Bieber videoclips you could just kill their connection and stay happy with a full bandwidth just for yourself.
NetSpoof
Network Spoofer lets you change websites on other people’s computers – from your phone
Droid Sheep Guard
DroidSheep Guard runs silently and monitores your phones ARP-Table. As long as everything looks normal, it will be invisible. But in case it detects suspicious entries in your phones ARP-Table, it will pop up and warn you. If you want, the WiFi connection is disabled immediately to protect your accounts.
EvilOperator
Prank call
Shark App Pack (shark & shark reader)
Shark
Traffic sniffer, works on 3G and WiFi (works on FroYo tethered mode too).
To open dump use WireShark or similar software, for preview dump on phone use Shark Reader.
Shark reader
Application for reading pcap files
SMS Combo
The SMS Combo allows you to send a simple SMS by touching a single button. This is a lightweight and simple application. You can send multiple SMS by touching the button many times in a row.
It’s very useful for voting to support your favorite candidate with multiple SMS!
WARNING: This is not a SMS bomber or flooder, so don’t comment anything about that.
SMS Retaliator
How many of us receive lots of unwanted messages on a daily basis? With the “SMS Retaliator”, you get to have unique features unlike any other app. This “SMS Retaliator” is a one of a kind Android application that is well tested and easy to make use of for the end user. It does following items:
SMS Block List – This is the first feature, from your smartphone, this feature is going to help you block the unknown/unwanted message sender. All you need to do is update the number in your contact list, and then click on the “SMS Retaliator”. Update the “SMS Retaliator” and you will no longer receive a single message from that particular number. Once you block this person the messages sent by them will not be displayed in your smartphone anymore. These messages will be hidden from your view, as long as you don’t deactivate the contact from the list. Every time you activate or deactivate a contact, you will need to select the “SMS block” button to confirm. Usually in such applications you will be able to block all the messages or bar all the calls, with the “SMS Retaliator”, you get to personally select and blacklist each number.
Reciprocate SMS – This is the second feature, with the “SMS Retaliator”, you can send to either loved one or bothering one with the same message as many times as you want and at any time interval you want. All you need to do is select the “Reciprocate SMS” button, and you are good to go. If you want to play a harmless prank or give the person bothering you a taste of their own medicine, you can make use of this feature.
This application is simple and easy to download from the Android market and effortless to set up. The application is fully secure and all the messages sent are done so only after your personal consent. The application is very fast to use, and is completely trustworthy. There is not a single number that will be blocked on its own, so you can rest assured that you will be blacklisting only those messages that you don’t want to view. Once you install and set up the “SMS Retaliator”, you will realize how effortless the entire process is. Our future versions have a ton of other fantastic features that are sure to make your life problem free, so make sure you keep an eye out for them as well. (The cost of sms depends on your service provider)

22.Spy kit universal mailer
One mail to spoof them all!
A tool you can use to send e-mails from any address in the world. And sometimes get back an answer.
This is what your briefing for today will be about, agent.
As you know, e-mail communication has become an intrinsic part of modern life. It is present in the lives of all, from teenagers to presidents. As such, it can be a very powerful tool in the hands of a capable agent.
Therefore, I would like to introduce you to an important tool of your Spy Kit - the Universal Mailer.
There are similar civilian tools called Fake E-mail, Fake Mailer, Fake Mail, Anonymous E-mail, Anonymous Mail, False Mail, and others. These emulate some of the functions of the Universal Mailer. However, the Agency cannot guarantee their success rate.
With this tool, you can take the e-mail identity of whoever you want, or simply make a new one up. For example you can send someone a mail from Rovio, asking them to help in making the next Angry Birds, or from Tony Stark, asking for some upgrade ideas for the Iron Man suite.
After choosing your sender identity, you can use the rest of the tool as a normal e-mail application. It even has conveniences such as Cc and Bcc, as well as a contact list which automatically stores any new addresses you enter. It's quick, easy, and convenient, and may just be the thing to turn your mission into a successful one.
The tool also has a powerful function called Reply To, which allows you to get responses for the sent e-mail. Basically, it sets a return path for any replies. However it is a tricky function to use, that can sometimes create more problems than solutions, so be sure to read more about it by touching the switch in the Reply To field.
When you start up with the Universal Mailer, your e-mails are limited to 10 per day, in order to prevent misuse. However, as you use the tool, you will level up, and your limit will rise more and more.
This completes the briefing on the Universal Mailer, agent. I would like to add just one more thing. You are solely responsible for the use of this tool, however, always take the time to consider the possible negative consequences of every e-mail you send. And make sure not to use it for negative motives since you will surely be discovered and caught.
Dissmissed!

Hi.
I tried to search but couldn't find any solution for this issue.
I know making a real unremovable app is impossible, but I hope I'll be able to find a way to make an app harder to remove.
I want to make some kind of parental protection app.
it should be installed easily without much technical knowledge ( preferred that it will work on unrooted devices).
the app should be hard to remove or disable by the phone user.
who ever installed the app should be able to remove (probably with a password in the app settings).
I don't care if technical users will be able to easily remove the app.
I also don't care if the users will know that the app is installed on their device
I guess the simplest solution will be to some how hide the app from the app drawer.
I saw some where that Cerberus has that option but I guess it requires a root.
another solution might be if there is an option in the android os itself setting an admin password that will not allow
the user to install or remove any apps without the password.
any ideas if how to approach this ?
This is surely not a complete answer, but maybe a point to start with.
In android, you can write services: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Service.html
A facility for the application to tell the system about something it wants to be doing in the background (even when the user is not directly interacting with the application). This corresponds to calls to Context.startService(), which ask the system to schedule work for the service, to be run until the service or someone else explicitly stop it.

i'm a proud Android owner, but isn't it shame that iphone owners can easily install multiple whatsapp or Viber apps but we can't? even after ROOT. (maybe unless someone is very good at rewriting and manipulating the app or the OS)
you Developers can create anything. PLEASE help us to be able to install an app multiple times. i know it's possible because there is a very hard way to do it. but you guys can make it simple.
how great will it be if we could have multiple facebook and instagram and viber on our phones (especially the dual sim ones)
there is an app that allows you to install multiple (Wechat)
GO TEAM ANDROID
by the way, there are some alternatives for the people who need this.
for example:
OgWhatsapp (which will help you install multiple whatsapp)
2lines for viber (uses your viber app and changes between numbers on the fly) (not really a dual app but colse)
2lines for whatsapp (also works the same as mentioned above)
multiwechat (which really installs more than one wechat on your phone)
i will update this if i find anything new. or you guys can help.
STILL i hope a capable developer finds a way to install an app multiple times
I don't find 2lines for Viber can you post a link please?
CallShield is a call blocker for android.
A call is blocked if de the caller id starts with any number included in the block list.
This behavior could be changed in general preferences for doing an exact matching.
For adding a number to block list, first you need to include it in your contacts.
A blocked calls log is saved and a notification is showed when a call block ocurrs.
Xposed can be user for earlier block.

I've tried using 3rd party apps to block the notifications but none of them are working. Even setting the Notification options to "Blocked" using the system App Info settings won't block them. It just occurred to me that these notifications are actually coming from the Phone app, not the CallShield app... still, I hope I can find a way to get rid of them.

It is Callshield who is showing that notification, from the xposed hook of Phone app. I will add a "Silent mode" option to Callshield for not showing that "annoying" notifications.
@vertigoelectric Try 1.0.38 version with "Silent mode" option and let me know
Whitelist not working
I have an older phone (Galaxy S4 with android 5.0.1) and the "whiltelist" mode blocks all calls even if they are in my contacts list. Any way to get this to work? I was using RCB (root call blocker) but that stops working with xposed being installed.

Verify that "Global lock" option is not selected.
Maybe your contacts are saved with country prefix?
Is it possible to introduce the possibility of blocking calls only on certain days of the week and at certain times?

I will try to include Tasker/Locale/Llama integration for activating it in whatever condition someone would need.
Haven't tried it yet, but couldn't find any info about regex matching. Regex match would be quite useful

It's working with starts-with pattern, so every call with starting with that prefix included in block list, will be blocked
This behavior can be disabled with Exact matching option.
Why is there a service constantly running when I am using the xposed method to block the calls? This is nice, I wish the source was released so I can make it better, but I don't understand why there needs to be a service running when xposed is enabled....
