[Q] Is purchasing a Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 advisable now? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello..
I have zeroed in on the Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 phone as my next upgrade and would like to get it off US Ebay. (Basically a mint pre owned piece.)
I am from India and hence i have few queries.
1) Is there any chance the Exynos chipset might not be present in any random Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 ?
I remember its counterpart phone in India also had an alternate version. Hence want to confirm.
2) What's the scenario regarding the service carrier maligning issue? I heard about it few weeks back.. no idea about current scene.
I am basically looking for the US counterpart of SAMSUNG I9100 GALAXY S II, which was released here in India.

Pls do excuse me if i missed out on threads regarding above posted question..

I'm not sure why you want the us version of a phone when you're in India.

Answer his question or don't respond.
1. If it doesn't have exynos chipset, then it's not an I777
2. Talk to your local carrier, we can't provide you this information

If you find out the other information and decide the I777 will in your area, I'd wait a few weeks. The used prices will probably go lower with the Nexus 4 release.

@jthatch12
Thing is, this phone was never released in my country. So i can only glean as much info possible via user response, regarding the gen scenario on the whole. Hence i asked
I ll try to seek the second query's response by more efficient / diligent searching.
Thanks for the part 1 of the reply.
@Sledutah
Yea, i plan to purchase ~next month. Hence getting all the info by that time.
Maybe the pricing will also come down by a bit. Let's see.

If you're going to spend ~$250 for a phone, why not just spend a little bit more and get the state-of-the-art Nexus 4?

I honestly did gave it a serious thought.. but:
1) LG brand is holding me back.
2) Limited storage/No mem card slot (something which does irks me)
3) It ll be glass on both sides. More chances of the compulsion to use it in a case.
4) I am not too big a fan of massive screens.. (barely convinced myself to go wee bit beyond the 4inch real estate)

India uses GSM so it'll definitely work with your carrier, I'm from Kenya and I used the phone without any issues, only thing is when you do get the phone you'll have to downgrade it to Gingerbread in order for sim unlock tools downloadable from play store to actually work, as most that are sold are. Also AOSP is full of issues if you plan on flashing CM10/AOKP but Samsung ROMS should perform beautifully and with expected 4.1 its a good buy, though I sold mine for Nexus 4

You already got many responses from others, I just chip in a bit.
1. If it's legitimated product made for AT&T, then it is, would be, have to be Exynos.
As for the counterfeit part? Seriously, nobody know. We just simply cannot check.
2. Depends on your end, if it has GSM network then it would work, however, depends on the frequency they operate, you might only get 3G speed and not take full advantage of the 4G (H+) one.

@votinh
err.. no counterfeiting thing.. i mentioned counterpart
Thank you for the other valuable info in your post.
We have two versions of S2 floating in India. One has the Exynos chipset, the other ( i9100G) seems to be having a slightly inferior SOC.
While purchasing here, one can be aware of the model no for both G as well as non-G with due diligence and adequate research regarding the stickers on the box mentioning the details. The G model does have a noticeably weaker GPU in the form of SGX 540.
I got concerned after hearing that the model i9100G does not have too much love from the development community simply because it is not available widely & in most territories (it probably is only available in asia pacific countries only)
To ask another query.. and this might be vague..
What's the future of the S2 phone.. both in terms of official and custom ROM releases..?
It surely has the firepower under the hood to go some decent distance i think.. but with all these quad core based phones now making an appearance.. will the official rom be made to order for advanced configurations..??

Seems to me, the S2 is on its way out, if it hasn't already been officially discontinued. If I were buying a new phone, I would get the most recent model possible, because the rate at which new models are introduced.
Also, what is your discomfort with LG?

Honestly the Nexus 4 is a scrub phone compared to the i777
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app

something worth taking note... is the i777 can take a serious beating. much more than any other phone i have come in contact with. it will scar and mar. the metal band will take on some serious gashes and the screen will stay unharmed. it is the only reason i still have this phone and have not upgraded.
that being said... if speed is what you want, buy something else. this is 2010 tech after all.

[Q] So TELUS is getting the "Hercules" soon...

http://www.telusmobility.com/en/AB/...index.shtml?INTCMP=HomeILCC3samsungGalaxySIIX
Which they're calling the "Samsung Galaxy S II X." Whatever that means, blame TELUS.
Anyways, while the specs cover general technical details and not exactly what processor or RAM or anything like that, it seems to have more than the current Galaxy S II in terms of processor speed (1.2 GHz to 1.5 GHz) and screen size (4.5").
However, some of the guys are codenaming it the Hercules, which makes me feel iffy about it, because apparently Samsung is having some sort of fiesta where they're classifying a number of different phones under the Galaxy S II name, even when some of the phones are much crappier.
So here is my question:
- Should I really upgrade to this phone from my current? (Motorola Atrix)
And because this is in General, and because I'm interested in the opinions:
- Discuss/speculate whether this phone would be better or worse than the S II original model, at least until we get official specs.
From what I remember its Qualcomm chipset, even though its higher clock, exynos by samsung is far better. It has larger screen, and Imo... the galaxy s2 4.3 inch screen is already big enough, I wouldnt buy it, and if I was given the chance to switch from s2 to hercules for free I wouldnt do it. + No custom roms for international S2 will work since hercules is completely different phone.

Specs are out, it's for sure the Qualcomm chipset, which is far inferior (really) to the Exynos in GPU performance, and at 1.5Ghz, it's going to be about the same CPU wise. It's really not that much different than the SoC in the Sensation, just clocked higher, and with a different modem.
The network performance remains to be seen, but on my 21Mbps-capable SGS2, on the Telus network in the GVA, I've never seen higher than 8k down, so I have to wonder if the 42Mbps dual connect modem on the SIIX will actually help...two connections to the network may not be such a big boost if it's still the same slow network.
And yes, it's going to be freaking huge. I came from an SGS1 (with a slight Atrix detour) and find the SGS2 is right at the margin of comfortable size. Not to mention the pixel density reduction, if that matters to you.
The biggest issue beyond being too big and too slow is that it's going to be an XDA development orphan as well.

So thank you for reading my post, moderator.
As for the rest of you, thanks for your insight - good to know these things. I think I'm hooped, since I don't have the money to buy out a SGS II. I suppose if I was rich, I'd get that one instead of upgrading to the Telus-brand model.
Change to Bell and you will get the International model.

I'd love to, but I've already got an account on Bell with late charges (for my ex-girlfriend) who doesn't even use it any more - even if I paid off those charges, I apparently wouldn't be able to get an upgrade for another year to 2 years.
EDIT: Plus according to Bell's plans, I would get less than I have right now for about $15 more than what I'm paying with Telus.
Im so stuck right now. I dont want the S2 X but I dont want to switch carriers cause from the looks of it everyone else's plans suck compared to the one I have with Telus right now. I would go with the HTC Amaze but Telus doesnt get that for like another 3 weeks and I need a new phone cause im using a crappy LG Shine Plus with a shattered screen. Ahhh what to do...
A friend of mine got the hercules the other day and did a speed test on it and is getting 12-14 Mbps constantly. I have the bell version rooted and unlocked and can only get 5mbps on a good day. So the dual must be working for it... and for that speed boost I'm thinking it may be worth the upgrade! Any thoughts? I have tried flashing different modems to get higher speeds but Nada.

Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100G

I had bought the Samsung Galaxy SII few days back, but unfortunately the model which I got was GT-I9100G instead of GT-I9100.
After making the payment I can to know that the phone is a variant of Samsung Galaxy SII. I didn't intend to buy GT-I9100G and I have been cheated for this by the company.
Following are the false claims by the company:-
1). The company claims that the processor is a dual core 1.2Ghz, though it is but the maximum processing speed is capped at 1008Mhz.
2). Nowhere on the packaging or on your website it is mentioned that the company is selling GT-I9100G. The website too states GT-I9100 model.
3). The camera hangs at times.
4). 3D performance is poorer.
I have paid a handsome amount to buy this phone and in no way I am willing to keep this GT-I9100G model with me. I am not concerned whether the GT-I9100G is the latest model or not. I want a brand new replacement of my phone(i.e. GT-I9100 instead of GT-I9100G) at the earliest.
I have been cheated & very seriously I will take the matter to the Court & to the Consumer Forum against the concerned person(s)/company in couple of days and a notice will be served initially regarding what I have stated above by my lawyer.
Samsung is silently replacing GT-I9100 with the GT-I9100G model without properly informing.
Following are the countries where GT-I9100G is being sold currently:
China
Egypt
India
Iran
Malaysia
Morocco (MAT)
Morocco (MED)
Pakistan (PAK)
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia (JED)

Please take your pointless rant somewhere else. No one here works for whatever company you bought your phone from and no one cares that you bought the wrong one.
Also, this isn't the place to request new forums.
P.S. The fact the I9100G has a total of two custom ROMs and two custom kernels leads me to think you have absolutely zero chance of getting a dedicated section.

But only a fool would do that and if their are more than one version of a product its up to the buyer to buy the correct product .If the box is misleading then you return the phone that very day .A bit of research would have shown that the G model is sold in some countries .

Yes, i agree with you. Me to same thing happen. i went to the shop and blindly purchase s-2 i didn't noticed the model number. after 2 or 3 days i noticed that my mobile is some thing different than original one GT-I9100. I called up samsung support to change my device with GT-I9100 but they said it is not possible. I don't know what to do? It is a same cost as GT-I9100 ?
My mobile always hang-up on camera function, i am looking for a fix for my camera problem. Anybody can help on this.

G is a trick for cost saving by samsung
yes, it is a cost saving program by samsung .. less price,, low features.
but custom roms are always there to make it better,, look for one and get it on..
No. I9100G replaces I9100 everywhere. Of course some old I9100 are still in some shops, for the moment.
Why produce the I9100 in a Samsung factory if it is cheaper to buy the I9100G soc and sell it as a SII at same price of a I9100?
The Samsung factory has other stuff to do (produce the SIII).
Same here!!!

Me too havin' the same problem. But it's right, you can't replace it now as it has been discontinued. I also did call the Customer Care. They say there's no difference except that the GPU is stronger in the G version . G only describes the modified parts.
Ya, GT-I9100 is of the same cost.
For the camera function - my camera says, 'camera failed' after clicking 8-10 pics - I think it'll solved in the ICS update. After restarting the phone, it again starts to GRANT US THE HIGHLY VALUED PERMISSION OF CLICKING 10 PICS.

I own a Galaxy S II (GT-I9100G). the following is my opinion based on the research I did comparing the GT-I9100 and GT-I9100G.
As per the knowledge I have on GT-I9100G, I don't think GT-I9100G is of a substandard. although both have different firmware and chip-set, performance wise both are more or less same.
Also GT-I9100G is a latest version of the device where some of the problems present(eg: overheating and battery drain) in the GT-I9100 were addressed to some extent.
Based on the performance benchmark done by Indepebdent people, both the devices are performing more or less same.
the difference between the Samsung exynos chip-set(GT-I9100) and TI OMAP4430 (GT-I9100G) are theoretically the first one can achieve a clock speed up to 1.5GHz and second can achieve to a max of 1.2 ghz( and limited to 1.08ghz in GT-I9100G). But according to many users, there is no explicit performance lag because of this difference. Also exynos is a brand new chipset from samsung where some problem may exist but TI OMAP is a well tested established one, so GT-I9100G can be more reliable.
The only drawback for GT-I9100G are , there is not much custom ROMS for the latest model(GT-I9100G) and there is no easy method to root it compare to GT-I9100. I think this will change in course of time as more and more GT-I9100G devices are in customers hand. Based on the countries GT-I9100G was sold, I think at some point of time GT-I9100G is going to outsell GT-I9100.
I think if ICS is released for GT-I9100 in the same time it will also be released for GT-I9100G.
Be satisfied with your Galaxy I9100G

I think SAMSUNG is not officially Differentiating when they are using the term GALAXY S II for the both GT-I9100 and GT-I9100G. So any new updates that is available GT-I9100 will be made available for GT-I9100G.

I think SAMSUNG is not officially Differentiating when they are using the term GALAXY S II for the both GT-I9100 and GT-I9100G. So any new updates that is available GT-I9100 will be made available for GT-I9100G.

Ya! But I think there can be a delay. The G variant has different kernels since its CPU and GPU is different. But I don't think that matters as models like LTE and Pocket are also getting the updates.
At most, our G can have one or two days delay... At least, I think so!
i warned all my friends who were interested about the G model
a friend on mine called me when he was about to buy i9100g and i told him to look if it says G and refuse it and demand i9100
good thing i bought my i9100 before g model was introduced
Hi,
i am new to this forum I recently switched from my HTC Desire with MIUI ROM to the Samsung Galaxy S2, which is unfortunately the 9100G version of the phone. I was hoping that the ICS update will arrive on the G Version to, but it seems that is not the case.
On sammobile.com, there is even no mentioning of the todays ICS update, the same with samsung-updates.com.
I searched this forum very deeply, looking for 9100G posts, but there is just no reliable info if the ICS update will ever be released for 9100G.
Manye users here say "yes", but no one has some kind of "proof" ?
I've postet this in the big "official ICS" thread already, but I guess it was the wrong place
Thanks in advance.

I got a I9100G from Expansys at first. I thought I had to do a return because I didn't like it, but then I realized that the specs for the i9100G is wrong so you could use false advertising claims to get a refund.
They apologized and sent me a real i9100. Yay!

Do you guys think we will get all the futures the s3 has share thoughts

Do you guys think well get the s3 apps like the camera and the s talk and eye tracking and all that like would it be possible or is the stuff based on hardware cause in my opinion since the s3 lte is going to probably be the same processor of the note I feel the note with the s3 futures will be either a very good competition or actually be a better phone for those who can use big phones

Knowing Samsung history its very doubtful.
Would it be possible fir a developer to somehow get the futures from the s3 and put them on the note?

If anything the GS3 would be using the S4 snapdragon which is the MSM8960 paired with the adreno 225, unlike the Note which uses the S3 snapdragon MSM8660 (IIRC) paired with the adreno 220. So not exactly the same chips...

Officially? No. Unofficially? Yes.
This is Samsung's way to get people to purchase new phones. In other countries outside the US, 2 year contracts dont exist which frees customers to upgrade phones as often as they wish. Releasing new features for new phones keeps people buying the newest Samsung phones. Here in the states, its a different story.
FOR THE MOST PART, this is one of the few areas where Apple has done it right, firmware updates are generally speaking fast and frequent giving new features and functionality nearly every month or two. Yes, there are exceptions (most recently, Siri) but Apples' business model is based on the US cell model.
HOWEVER, this doesnt mean these features wont be ported by the community, just as Siri is now available unofficially for just about all Apple ipads, iphones and itouches.
Of course, this is my opinion, all speculation.
I wondered the same thing as the OP. And I agree with littlewierdo. I think it may be possible for these new features, which are mostly software, to be ported over to the Note. Only time will tell.
Much later From Devs not Samsung
I doubt Samsung will ever port any of the new software features over from the SGS3 they just sent out ICS and premium suite to the carriers I think thats all the software upgrades we'll see from Samsung to our phones. But I do think we have some really great Devs on here that will port some of the SGS3's software features to our devices in Mods or Roms. As to when this will happen I'd guess not til late fall 2012 after the SGS3 source code is out and the Devs have had enough time to figure out and write those features for our device. But like I said we have some great Devs on here so who knows they keep surprising me perhaps will see those roms/mods earlier.

Id really like to know where the notion that Samsung has sent ICS to carriers came from. To my knowledge, there has been nothing officially stated that I know of except that Samsung stated Notes would BEGIN seeing ICS in Q2 of this year, but ICS will likely roll out STARTING in Korea and move to different regions over time, as has been the case with EVERY roll out Samsung has done. The Captivate didnt see Gingerbread until nearly a year AFTER it started rolling out in Korea.
I could very well be wrong here but based on Samsung's track record for releases and the fact that there has not been anything official that I know of besides a vague statement by Samsung about a Q2 update, I dont see anything happening. It might feel like something is coming but we dont even have a ready for prime time leak yet...

you are right.. Koreans are very trendy people. My cousin and his friends change phone every 6 months or so.
There is that "official" update link that Samsung mobile usa on twitter keeps referring people to, but that only shows one device with official update as of now.
As far as the OP question, it is very likely that we will see someone port these over since most of the new software uses the same base hardware (i.e. NFC in conjunction with wifi direct, or front facing camera for eye tracking, etc). I realize that the cameras may be different or the exact model of the NFC chipset or other hardware may differ, but it is software and can be changed to utilize our device specific hardware. Since these new programs were built on existing technology(that the note shares) it is highly likely to eventually see these incorporated.
It will take talent and time, but it is very likely that in later stages of development we will see potential unlocked... Or unwrapped, lol

I'm sure someone will be able to port it at some point, but I wouldn't count on it happening anytime soon, and probably not even this year. I'm not basing this on a ton of information, but I've been following the Note forum for awhile since I decided to hold out for the S3 and as far as I know there still isn't a great leak without bugs for ICS, which was pretty much "guaranteed" by all the forum members as soon as the Note released in the US.
I could be wrong, but that's just what I've seen.

yes unlocking is pretty easy, google it, there are lots of unlocking websites out there, ranging from 15-40$.
Best rom is a hard question to answer, its all personal preference, I stuck with stock for quite a while, but the development has really cranked up with this phone and now run ParanoidAndroid its a Jelly Bean build and its Brilliant.
Dont really understand your 3rd question... the official ICS updates... well they suck. they are laggy and poop to be honest. if you are going to not root and stick with stock would advise strongly to stick with GingerBread.
Which is better... well it depends. Google the specs on both phones. I would not trade my i717 for the n7000 ever... this phone is connected to my hand like my fingernails...

Don't buy it! They are unveiling the Note 2 in 2 days!

the answer is highly dependent on your usage habits, and the areas you will be using your device in.
the ATT version note can be unlocked for world use, and is a fine device overall.
The international note uses a different process core, along with a few other internal changes, and of course has an entirely different front plate.
while I have not used the international version of the note, I feel that the ATT version is getting a higher level of support at the moment, as there are far more of these devices being used.
Both have their strong points, but I prefer the higher support level, and developer interaction of the ATT version.....
and as you saw above...the note 2 is coming out soon, but you will likely wait for developer support on that device, just like any other new phone, and you will likely see a note 1 going for a highly reduced price once the note 2 is released.

yeh... get a note.....today....
you are suffering from android withdrawls.....
Search the general forum. there are at least 5 threads talking about unlock for the ATT note.
And although a bit premature, welcome to the note forums....:highfive:...g
wow just the thread i was looking for. i just got a sgh-i717 (traded my s2 for it... meaning i can still get the SGN2 when it comes out with my upgrade). anyways, same dilemma here as question 4. i have the chance to exchange my at&t note for an international version, but cant decide which one to stick to. it seems by the comments i been reading online is that the n7000 is smoother. this is my first time with real 4g speeds and its nice. who here would jump the n7000 bandwagon if given the chance?
right now im running official cm9 8/16. i think its the one with less stutter. im using 270 dpi and apex launcher.
Not many would be my guess. Our roms run smooth and we like 4g.

I'd switch to the international version. Logically speaking, there will always be more devs for an international version.
The announced sgn2 will likely be an international version with a north american version following a few months later. LTE is the culprit there.

I love my Note. It seems to be bullet proof on running root & different mods. I feel any other phone would've been bricked several times.
If it were me i would take the i717 over the N700 simply cause i can't conceive of a hard button. The i717 processor is rated at 1.5ghz and the N700 is rated at 1.4ghz, and the development of the i717is so awesome that i can't see how the N700 could be any better.
If you absolutely need a world phone that this is a wasted exercise, but if you're not going to need the world phone i would recommend the i717.

This version has the potential to connect to LTE networks in the US and 4g worldwide. International is 4g never LTE.
www.cellphoneunlocker.com has been my go to site when I can't unlock it myself. They charge $24.00 and you get the code in a day.
Either phone has good choices for rom development. Both run the same apps.
But if you buy a note now you know you will be envious of the new one. But it sounds like you are patient, so you could enjoy this one for a long time. I can't imagine that the new one could be so much better -- I am just scratching the surface of what this version can do. I guess the new one might do it a little faster.

[Q] Is it worth the purchase?

I'm planning to buy my first Android phone and I've chose then Samsung Galaxy S2. But what i'm unsure of, is that after investing a substantial amount of money (its still expensive in my country) will it be good enough to handle updates beyond JB for the coming two years? or will it be outdated soon and should i rather go for the s3? Need help! Thanks
S2 is still very good device!
IMO it is worth to buy it.

Don't do it.
The sgs2 is at the end of its support life if we get jelly bean I'll be ecstatic.. But we will not get anything else.. And we will not get the full source code to enable a proper realise of a newer Android OS.
The sgs3 may be short lived as the sgs2 is whispered to come in April..
Save your money buy it used or buy a different phone

You're from India, right? Right now there's about a 12K price difference between the S2 and S3. So I'm assuming price will play a pretty big part in deciding on a phone. The S2 as of now probably has the most support amongst all android phones while the s3 support is comparatively still in a nebulous stage. Having said that, most devs who're working on the S2 now seem to slowly be moving towards the S3..So S3 dev support will only improve with time. The S2 is definitely getting the next iteration of android. But that'll probably be it. So it should be good for the next couple of years at the very least. but beyond that..who knows. Its like comparing the where the s2 is now to the galaxy s.
If your pocket allows it, go with the s3, else the s2 is still right up there with the best IMO.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Its like this. If you want a good phone where you can do anything one can do, and still not be very expensive, go for the S2. You can do everything with that phone. No limitations whatsoever. Good camera, good looking, not so big, and very smooth with enough space for installing apps.
If you want an awesome phone and expensive one, go for the S3, but you would still find everything you do on S3 also in S2. No major differences in there, except the price.
And I am sure with the latest and upcoming Jelly Bean update the S2 will become and even better phone. I really hope that they will also update it with the latest TouchWiz 5 UX Nature interface. If Samsung does that, I will not envy my father for having an S3 at all.
I have both phones in my home and the only major differences between S2 and S3 are on the interface, and the display. S3 has a much much better display and the latest TouchWiz interface is very cool.
Hope I helped in your decision.
Thanks Haxtream, Agonn that really helped. One last question! The HTC One S is from the same category as the S2 right? But in India HTC is lauching it with S3 snapdragon processor overclocked at 1.7ghz instead of the new S4 Krait architecture chip. Its only 3k more than the S2, and since its launched with ICS I'm assuming it will get updates beyond JB.. is it a good option? overclocked processors won't heat up much right?
I can say now in newest google android version we cannot to do customs roms because its some custiminazion center... sorry if my bad english
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
Can't say I know much about the One-S but what I do know is that the dev support for it is pretty weak. More so if you compare it to the S2's. I'm assuming its mainly coz of HTCs locked boot loader which they're still trying to work around. Might improve in the future, but you never know.
Another thing is with this whole system of using different chipsets in some countries. It leads to a lot of chaos and confusion if you're into flashing custom ROMs and the like. For proof, just look up the number of people who have managed to flash an i9100 rom on their i9100G phone and bricked it. (If you do go the S2 way, be wary of shops trying to pass off an i9100G in an i9100 box.happened to me.)
Finally..I don't know how it is in Kolkata but here there are barely any HTC service centres.so any problem with the phone means you're stuck for ages. Samsungs service centres are a dime a dozen here. Didn't like the way the fellows were behaving in one service centre so next time I had an issue went to another one literally 500mts away.
Will it get support beyond JB? Who knows? These companies are incredibly cagey about releasing info on releases and since it won't be their latest model nor a past flagship (that I guess is the One-X) I wouldn't count on an upgrade..leave alone a quick one.

Now this is turning into an essay so forgive me. But regarding the overclocked processor. Extreme overclocking does equal more heat. But if the company is releasing it that way itself it should be alright.
I know the S4 chip does..not so sure about the S3 chip. Atleast one of them uses the 28nm manufacturing process. AFAIK the i9100 chips' is 45nm. A smaller manufacturing process theoretically atleast, should produce lesser heat even if overclocked.

Hi, if you want long term support for new android go for google nexus, if possible. The first nexus (very old phone) got JB while we are still waiting for SII official JB, and i'm starting to worry if it will ever arrive.
Cheers!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using ICS.
Nexus gets all the latest updates because it is mainly a Google designed product made by Samsung and Google doesn't have other phones to update as far as I am concerned, I so it's easier for them to only update one device than it is for Samsung who have hundreds of devices to work on updating.
It's not because the S2 is inferior to Nexus cause it has probably even better specs and a much better camera, 8MP, while Nexus only has a 5MP camera.
If you are okay with using custom made Roms than you should definitely choose the Samsung Galaxy S2. There are some truly amazing custom ROM's out there in which you'll be able to run Jelly Bean very good and overclock/underclock your phone to up to 1600MhZ and still have not so much overheating problems.
As for HTC one S, and I don't really know much about it. A friend of mine has a HTC one X and he likes it veryI much. Ive had that phone in hand and it was good amazing screen but too expensive. I would suggest you to get the S2 until a much better phone comes out and you make the money to buy it. Cheers.

One last question, This will be my first android phone, So lets say I won't be flashing new roms' on the ONE S with the s3 chip, will simple rooting be also a problem?
IMO just getting root access on any phone should be pretty simple, the best place to get that answer would be the One S forum dude.. people who have and use the phone will be best placed to tell you how easy or difficult it is. Unless someone here has that phone as well or has rooted it for someone else, you wouldn't get a firsthand opinion (for want of a better term)
