[Q]How to make an RUU rooted - HTC Rezound

How do I make an RUU rooted? Meaning I keep the custom hboot and recovery. I'm s-off. I flashed the latest global RUU a while back after being on clean Rom for a while, and hated having to push the hboot and amon ra recovery again. I'm running Newts one XxX 3.2.1 now and I love it, but I just want to remember what stock was like I guess lol. Maybe so I can appreciate the devs more. Can I just delete the hboot***file, boot_signed.IMG and recovery_signed.img files from the ph98img.zip and all be good? Or will it bootloop or possibly brick my phone.

Yes you can do that, just removing the recovery will do the trick. If you remove the boot from it, it will bootloop. That should keep you rooted and keep your current recovery. Be sure to unzip the zip file, then remove it, then re zip it up and run it

Thank you. So I leave the hboot in the .zip as well? Won't that flash over the custom hboot and remove the fastboot option?

Oh sorry didn't realize you had an engineered hboot. Yeah take that out too
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app

Ok cool. Thanks. That's what I thought from reading on xda for a while, but I wanted to make sure before I did it so I didn't have any issues and have to start over anyway.

I suppose I do need the boot IMG too since I'm moving from sense 4.0 to 3.6 and ics maybe slightly different too like 4.02 and 4.03

Well since the ruu will replace your rom, you will need to keep the boot.img that comes with the ruu

Yeah, that's right.

What could have happened...

Hi All,
I just traded my Rezound to a guy on CL. It is rooted, s-on, with Scott's stock rooted ics. Anyway, the guy sent me a message saying that it froze on the htc screen (though it worked flawlessly when he walked away with it). He apparently called Verizon who got as far as the bootloader screen then wouldn't help him. I walked him through getting to recovery then doing a wipe. He says it is still stuck on the htc screen. I am concerned with what Verizon may have told him to do. Can y'all think of any reason doing a standard wipe all from Amon Ra wouldn't help? My feeling is that since it gets to the recovery screen, it is fixable. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Kim

They may have made him do a factory reset won't boot without an os

Ahh! Ok, that makes sense. So I should just be able to slap a rom and boot.img onto my sd card and load via amon ra?

Don't see why not, check to see if it's still unlocked first

Awesome! Thanks for your replies.

So I would bet he didn't do a factory reset unless he either flashed the stock recovery or RUU the phone.
Since it is s-on it sounds like he flashed a different rom and didn't flash the corresponding kernel and that is why it sticks at the HTC screen.

Should I have any issues reverting to stock GB via SD card?

Not if you never installed an ics leak. I don't mean Rom but ruu. If not then run the gb ruu

Is it safe to flash new OTA radios in cm10?

I've gotten a hold of the radio for the new 8/29 OTA, but I'm holding off on flashing them because I don't want to brick my device. I've looked around different websites and no one seems to give a straightforward answer. Can someone tell me if this is safe and the risks I'm running if I flash the new radio.
I've flashed the new radios on AOKP and everything is running just fine, you should be OK by flashing the radios on CM10 because flashing radios aren't ROM dependent. As long as your S-Off you'll be alright

I think you need to be S-OFF to flash radios but I could be wrong you should ask in the Captain Throwbacks radio thread
EDIT: Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704612

I tried it and got nothing. I think the reason is because the dumlock only gives you access to the boot partition. I'm pretty sure the radios are in a different partition. Looks like I'll have to wait for an exploit. I was a little late to root so I'm on hboot 1.15

Well hopefully it works out for you I'm sure these Devs will find a way around it
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
If you are on boot 1.15 and son you can't flash radios. Only way to do it would be to ruu.
And you don't want that

I don't think s-off is going to make much difference what you restore in recovery. People have been flashing back to ICS without issues AFAIK

When used my backup to restore i had to fastboot the kernel. Just use the boot.emmc.win. rename to boot.img. then use fastboot flash boot boot.img.

Kernel causing constant reboots?

So ever since I S-Offed, I've been using it to flash multiple Sense kernels (Bulletproof, ArcReactor, etc.) And I've been experiencing constant random reboots and it then giving the notification that the values weren't applied properly after a bad restart. Is anyone else getting these notifications or are they a product of me constantly flashing one on top of the other (wiping Dalvik cache and cache beforehand though)

Oh yeah, I'm currently running Elemental X 4.2 at stock frequencies on the "Erie" I/O and "intellidemand" governor, although even switching it around to the other governor/I/Os are giving me the reboot issues

My phone has been acting a lil funny to. Don't wanna bad mouth anybodies kernal, but if somebody out there has the stock kernal for 3.16 I'd be really grateful.

Just curious...that thread says 2.13. Is it the same kernal as 3.16?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Weirdly enough I think I solved the issue: I've been using No-frills CPU Control for my kernel customizations and always check the "apply at boot" option, I unchecked it this morning and I haven't gotten ANY random reboots. If you have that option clicked, try unclicking it and see what happens, it seems to have solved the problem for me

You may have to flash a completely new ROM and just keep it at that (reflash your current Sense ROM and just keep the stock kernel on it)

Like a rooted stock Rom right? The trick is just finding one that the kernal hasn't been changed to a custom one.

Any way to use an RUU in ubuntu without a VM

Do you use wine or something or is there no way to do it?

scrossler decrypted the ruu.exe check it out in designgear's RUU thread in general.
What is a decrypted ruu?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Zip file removed from the exe. Should be flash able from recovery
Awesome, thanks for the tip.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Ok the decrypted RUU is the img files for the OS install. NOT flashable. I should have checked before I said what I did.
So how do you install that onto the phone?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
No idea off hand. I think it would install via stock recovery but don't take my word for it. I just use a vm on my mac to use ruu files
I think I'm just gonna go back to windows. I crashed ubuntu last night anyways.
