No Connection to mobile provider - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
hope someone can help me. Since this night I am no longer able to connect to my mobile provider. I tested the sim in a different phone and the sim works fine.
When I go to settings, and search for the providers, I get all german providers but when I try to connect, it says it is not possible.
Is there anything I can try? Or could it be that something in my device is broken?
I have JellyBam CM10 4.12 running, but it seems to be not Rom-related.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Check your IMEI in settings/about phone/status. If it begins with '0044' (do not post your actual IMEI or any portion thereof here !), there's your problem. If that's the case, restore your EFS backup (there are heaps of threads about same on here).
Also, there's always the possibility the phone has been IMEI blocked (assuming your IMEI is correct/OK). If your IMEI is correct/OK, call your carrier & confirm your IMEI is/isn't blocked.
If neither of those things are the issue, I'd do a clean install of stock in the first instance & see if the problem persists. If it does, it may well be a hardware issue. If going back to stock does fix the problem, it's obviously a rom issue; maybe try a completely clean install of the rom you were using & see how that goes.

I tried everything except calling the provider.
My IMEI and Baseband is still visible and ok.
If I search for networks, it finds the networks, but says "Unable to connect".
This happens also with stock ICS firmware as well as with the custom ROM.
Does it mean, that my hardware is broken?

Not necessarily. But call your carrier & ask if the phone is IMEI blocked. It could also be a case of something not setup correctly at their end so far as your account with them is concerned.
That's what's you need to do next.

Well i'm quite disappointed now, I tried flashing various roms (custom and stock, ICS, 2.36) but still no luck.
I also noted now, that I have unknown baseband and no IMEI since yesterday.
I had a backup of EFS folder, but restoring it didnt change anything. Using EFSBackupPro...
Dont know what to do else...pleaasseee help

tgat diesnt sound good
Try restoring stock via odin
---------- Post added at 09:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:47 AM ----------
Try restoring your efs folder manually , with a root file explorer, if you have your efs folder backed up on your external SD card copy it to the root directory of your phone

i have restored the EFS folder from my girlfriends phone (just to test, because i have only an img of my backup)
No chance, still no Baseband/IMEI...
Seems to be a hardware issue? Or should I try to get professional help (JTAG?)

Should not be using another phone EFS on your phone. Data are different in them.

[Q] mobile network not available problem

I got my samsung galaxy s2 this month. Everything is ok until the day before yesterday. When I try to make a call, it says "mobile network not available". I go to the setting--->wireless and network--->mobile networks--->select/unselect use packet data, there is no icon indicator it is activate as it should be. I tried the factory data reset, but the problem is still unsolved. Thus far, call/message stop working. Wifi is OK. Do you have any suggestion on that? Thanks.
Please check your IMEI, and your Baseband version.
If they are not available, you will need to restore your EFS, if you do not have a backup, you will have to visit Samsung Service Center, or repair the EFS yourself.
Do not use another phone's copy of EFS as it is illegal to modify or clone your IMEI number in most (if not all) countries. You can however use someone's EFS backup, and mod it with your phone's IMEI if you know how to.
Hi,
I'm in this horrible situation: no baseband, no IMEI. By ny chance, do you know how to get a EFS backup and change to my IMEI?
I appreciate any help. I was trying to make a call, the person on the other side could not hear me. I reboot and...lost my baseband. Checked IMEI, it was also missing.
Thanks

have u solved your problem? I got something quite similar...
In my sad experience, your only chance is going to Samsung and ask them to restore your IMEI. From what Samsung in BRazil told me, it should be in the same country of the device. As my device was imported from the UK, Samsung Brazil could not do anything, as IMEI database is Country restricted. I believe this info is correct as the representative was very helpful. It did not look like a lame excuse. If your device is not under warranty, it should not cost you more than U$ 50. That was the price here, and everything in Brazil is so expensive these days.
My solution was to buy another Galaxy S II in Brazil as it had been released here in between the time I imported mine and the time it got screwed.
Wish you good luck.

I have the same problem, but if I take out the sim and put in another phone, it works, and if I took another sim (from another operator) and put it in sgs2, it also works, just this sim not working in this sgs2. Is this operator controlled by apple and trying to block sgs2 devices?

Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik-Cache
Wipe Battery Stats
Install the wipe version of this ROM (CheckRom v4)

I've got the same problem...
does anyone have came up with a good solution?
Try this
Root your phone.
Go to efs folder in root. Go to imei folder in that you will find a file named mps_code. Edit it using root browser from market. Erase everything and type your original imei no. and save it.
Reboot your phone and now check.
Cannot guarantee it but it worked on mine. Good luck

All I had to do to go to the Access Point Name ('APN') settings and change the Authentication Type from its default 'Not Set' to 'None'. After that, my internet is working fine.
It would appear this may be an issue common to a number of Chinese phones, so hopefully this will be of use to other people in the same situation.

[Q] SIM card undetected(empty efs folder)!!!

My previous phone was Walkman W8 and i used to root the phone and install custom rom and stuff and i was using the custom romed phone for a long time..
Then i got Samusng Galaxy S2 GT-I9100G and stared custom roming and rooting stuff.. After losts of soft bricks and hardbricks i managed to install rootbox rom with codeworkxx custom kernel in it..
But when i booted the the phone then the phone didnt detect sim card i tried restoring to original OS it sill didnt work..
Then i came across efs problems in xdaforums.. So i tried to use efs pro v1.7.14, backed up my efs and tries to restore them.. It didnt work then i downloaded a efs.img online for my phone and tried to restore my efs with that.. I didnt work also..
I tried to restore my backup and efs pro showed me this error...
Checking Device Connection... Device Connected!
Checking ROOT Access... Okay.

I ended up in empty efs folder with some upgaddr file...
I appreciate any kind of advice.. I am a semi-noob...Now i am using my old SE Walkman W8 till this gets fixed...
Thank You
take it to warranty
I have the same issue and i made lot and lot of reasearch about the EFS folder, IMEI recovery, etc etc, and i concluded that if you still have warranty return the phone to stock and take it to warranty (mine is with samsung warranty since yesterday).
I'll update you if they could fix it.
So I guess there is no other way then..
Anyway thanks for the reply.
My flash count is 7 will they accept my warranty if I restore the phone to its original self and give them...
Is there Anyother Way using Odin to repair my phone..
Badly want my s2 back
OK. I looked here and there and got my efs folder back...
But still my Sim dosent work and also have a problem with baseband version, my phone says base-band version unknown..
You need to flash another modem, but before that enable Flight mode.
Well if you still want to put your phone in Samsung for warranty flash an ICS ROM and then use Chainsfire Triangle Away application to reset your Flash count.
That way you wont have problems with Samsung.
You have the application in Market or in a post in this forum, market its 1.75 € if you get it from the forum its free.
Guys thanks for the replies...
:fingers-crossed:
But some how i got my S2 to detect my SIM card by flashing stock modem..:good:
The modem that worked for me was DZKL3 stock modem... now my unknown baseband is solved.. And my phone detects the simcard but still not perfect have lots of bugs..But even though my cell detects my sim card when i try to call or sms i get "Not registered on a Network" warning...
Now i am stuck up there....What to do from here
Have you tried to switch operator in cellular networks settings?

Is your IMEI 004999010640000 ? Whatever you do, don't post your IMEI (important) if it's different from this, a yes/no answer will do.

YES!
In that case you have the generic IMEI. Your original IMEI is gone. Sounds like your carrier blocks access to devices with non-unique IMEI's (lots of carriers around the world do this; some don't).
Restore your EFS backup if you have one (lots of threads on here detailing how to do this), if you don't have one it's either a service centre job (which you'll probably end up paying for), or you can contact a member on here called Odia by PM who might be able to recover your EFS/IMEI for you (for a small donation; much cheaper than paying Samsung/an authorised repairer to fix it).
Thanks Mate:highfive: this helped me a lot! Hope this solves my problem...:victory:
Sorry for posting this again...
I think i already know my imei number so is there anyway that i can restore my imei number through terminal, or using an external application....
If so can u guys help me... Thanks...
Without an EFS backup, no. Only Samsung/authorised repairer can fix it (Odia can sometimes as well with whatever form of magic he uses to recover them).
IMEI's are a unique device identifier, I.E your IMEI is unique to your phone. Changing IMEI's or transferring them to other devices is illegal in most jurisdictions throughout the world.
try this

I didn't say that. I mentioned it because whenever we get these threads on here, the conversation invariably turns to 'can I change my IMEI or transfer it to another phone', that's all.
You only have the two options. I'd recommend you contact Odia via PM & be patient.

Galaxy s3 yellow letters on screen

Haven't seen anything like this before...
So a friend bought a s3 from some other country and the phone didn't recognize Greek sim cards... The thing is that he didn't give it to me and he first went to Samsung. They said it can't be done and when he got it back from them it was like on the photos..
I have wiped, rooted, changed stock firmware, flashed cf auto root and siyah kernel but nothing can remove that box with letters from showing all the time except when I launch any app. Even the stock apps. Any ideas how to fix?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Nothing?Noone?At least any suggestion?
Why didn't he take it back a second time before he flashed everything he could find? Maybe they would fix it in seconds? They obviously messed us

It's definitely diagnostic/debug information, but I'm not sure why it's persisting even through factory resets and ROM flashes. Perhaps it can be disabled through one of the hidden diagnostic or service menus (check around on Google for the relevant codes).

Thanks for the suggestion...I found some codes and went to check them all out...One had many sub menus but I still saw them all and tried but nothing worked...
I will tell him to take it back to the Samsung service but cause it's weekend I got it to try my stuff.
And if this helps anyone help me this is what else I did. I moved on to unlock this device with GalaxSimUnlock since when I inserted a sim card the device wouldn't ask for pin or get signal. So I installed this and besides it saying that my phone is unbranded and unlocked it also says top of the list:
Device Model: Not ActiveVD2
So in conclusion, this S3 has:
1) These yellow letters
2) When inserting a sim card it asks for no pin and has no signal
3) Flashing roms stock or not or kernels didn't help with the letters and GalaxsimUnlock didn't either
4) Hidden menu codes didnt help
I'm going to give up if there aren't any other ideas..

Hi ..you need to provide more info dude ...what country did the device come from ?
Check the About Phone info ...everything is OK ? ....that message displays all the time ?
It may be just a display screen of some kind of process that the GS3 has ....look in developer settings ...is there anything checked to run ?
Check EFS folder ...everything is intact ..all files & folders...nv.data.bin ?
Also check APN settings ....I live in Greece also Chania,Crete & I switch sims often ...Vodafone , Cosmote ,Fido "Canada"
Some devices you need to manually enter the proper carrier settings for the first time
What that message may be is ...a process executing ...a function is trying to connect threw the network ....so the S3 ... doesn't seem to be detecting a network at all ...so it displays that screen message ...instead of a sim unlocking screen or something similar
...leave the sim card out ...does it still have that message
If all else fails ...goto TSAR3000 website & get the original factory firmware ....PIT..Radio ..CSC...all data for the GS3
You can maybe even show them your pics ..maybe they know exactly what it the cause of that message
If you flash an other firmware ...first wipe everything in the device ...format sdcard ...fix permissions ..everything !!
I will investigate this also ...very interesting !
---------- Post added at 12:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:28 PM ----------
Whoops ......if ..when...you reflash all the devices data with Odin ....make sure to check all 3 boxes
It also looks like the Bootloader is corrupted .....that would be my best guess

I have done most things that you said...After more investigation I found out that this yellow letters is called "Factory mode". I read for a solution somewhere and did that and the yellow letters have gone and the phone works great (for solution I went to efs / factoryapp / factorymode and changed the text inside to ON from OFF). BUT after that I still can't get any network although my mobile says that it's unlocked when running GalaxSim free version. So if it says that my phone is unclodked then why don't I have signal with my sim card?
Maybe try a different sim?
sent via xda app from starkissed maguro gnex paranoid beta9
From what I've researched it is either an illegal efs/blocked or carrier locked.
Sent from my Galaxy S3
Factory mode probably isnt it ....my device also says Factory Mode - On
Usually if the issue is just no signal ....its the APN Settings ....goto Mobile Networks / Access Point Names ....& if there are any settings MMS /MCC / MNC ports that have values & they are proper to the carrier ...then it should be good
But yeah after more investigation also ....all day ....it may look like a possible sim brick ......that device may have been reported stolen & the carrier hard locked it.....Or the nv.data.bin is corrupted ....maybe damaged from flashing ...
because all the device info ...that the nv.data.bin stores...it doesn't list those in that yellow message ....& its suppose too !
Like I mentioned earlier goto TSAR3000 & make sure you have all the correct device files & data
In GalaxSim Unlock.. it shows correct device model & carrier id ? .....it says unlocked for all modes & it says ...locking is consistent ?
There are many solutions ...so you need to rule out as many as possible
Something like this happened to an HTC One S... i unlocked for a friend ....unlocking was successful ..but couldn't get a signal ...I just let the device chill out 30 min or so & a signal finally transmitted.....sometimes there are authentication process's going on first time you boot a new carrier ....so you need to wait abit until all process's have completed
2 possible solutions I've found for you via Google
Wipe cache and dalvik
Take battery out for a few hours

APN settings aren't the problem. Actually apn settings are only for internet. I'm sure that the problem must have to do with the efs folder somehow. Probably something is corrupted there... But don't know how or if I can fix it. I didn't download the firmware from TSAR3000 but I downloaded the firmware form sammobile.com which I think neveris wrong... So that is also ok. GalaxSim Unlock says in all rows that it is unlocked. Also read somewhere how I can edit the nv_data.bin file to unlock the phone and also did the manual instructions but still the same.As for letting the sim card in for time, I did. I left it for hours but still it says not registered to network when I dial.
slaphead20 --> I have wiped everything many many times
Read that thread I linked you to
Did that and I did get out of factory mode which I also did when editing myself the file. The problem now is that I can't get any signal although the SiM card is recognised... Probably will have to go to Samsung.
APN settings ..is not only for internet my friend ....there should be 3 protocals
I know I am insisting ..but I know ...i have seen it with my own eyes
The device should have ...carrier APN....internet APN & tethering APN ....make sure that values are correct for carrier APN
carrier apn ...controls the transmision with the network & MMS ....MCC & MCN must have correct open ports or a signal will never transmit
These ports also control remotely locking the device sim
A mobile network code (MNC) is used in combination with a mobile country code (MCC) (also known as a "MCC / MNC tuple") to uniquely identify a mobile phone operator/carrier using the GSM/LTE, CDMA, iDEN, TETRA and UMTS public land mobile networks and some satellite mobile networks.
If this doesn't work ...the device is blacklisted & hardlocked

I dont know the progress you have had ..if any ...& what exactly has been done to the device
but I've searched around quite a lot & 4 things can only be ...why your not getting signal
Wrong APN Settings ...Damaged EFS ...Network Block...Damaged Antenna
There is nothing else inside the device that would cause no signal transmission
Do you have WiFi & Bluetooth ??
Had seen a similar problem with Note 2 and there the imei was currupted dial *#06# and see what u have on screen it could be that the imei will show something like 00460.

same problem.
i had the same problem when i flashed omega rom ( i am from india ), the singal was there at nigt and i slept with that but when i wake up i noticed it showing me emergency calls only. the i tried to search for imei jno. it showed me 0004 something then i realised that imei is erased.

Firstly, follow the steps in:
General > Sticky Roll-Up Thread > IMEI / EFS - Know this stuff
Which, as you can guess by the thread title, you should know.... There are steps to get out of factory mode and also info about the IMEI number. Serial number may be a different issue. Deal with that later
The same problem that i have now
Hi, did you solve it?
I have the same problem with my S3, Yello letters on screen.
I tried to use the secret codes in order to put off the debug diagnostic menu but without results, maybe I put mistake code in order to get it out.
But of course this is not the only problem I have. If I coud put it off, maybe I can use it as a TOMTOM Device with GPS and sometimes with WifFI Tools or put it
in my bedroom in order to look at my ipcams...
BUT FIRST I HAVE TO GET IT OUT YELLOW LETTERS ON THE BLACK SCREEN.
I discovered that my imei is
0049990164000008
This is a generic Imei, and maybe the phone will works if I SAY IF I could change Imei with my original IMEI Wrote on the package of my phone
I don't want to put a strange or a fake imei that is illegal but just MINE.
I have this that maybe help you:
PDA: I9300XXEMC2
PHONE: I9300BUEMC3
CSC: I9300VFGEMD1
So I tried to use ODIN to do a lot of things but without any results.
I read about ARIZAPatch A TURKISH developer has do this apk but I cannot use it cause I cannot root my S3, I tried to do, ok it sais REMOVED but when I install
BUSYBOX and SUPERSU... and ARIZAPATCH.... IT SAYS NO PERMISSIONS.
CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE?

[Legal] Change IMEI

by a accident i deleted my EFS file etc. when i was flashing a custom firmware. Then my phone was working correctly except my GSM.
I searched all the internet and i couldn't find a way to take restore my efs. Than i went to a local telephone technical service in my town and he fixed my phone. But i didn't realise he didint use my original imei. I used the phone a several months then suddenly my phone's gsm didint work. So i controlled my imei and it was "004999010640000". And now i need to change my imei number to my original one. How can i do that? i tried "IMEI MAKER/MP0B_001 file method", "MtkDroidTools" and "MauiMETA 3G" and also some other programs. They worked but specially IMEI parts didnt work.
So i need your help. If its a illegal thing. Just PM me. I didint do anything illegal an i need my phone back.

Galaxy S6 G925F- "No Signal" After M IMEI Had Been Changed

Messed up with my G925F!!!
Hello , my phone suddenly was not able to make or receive any calls or joining 3G/4G network or SMS. In other words, I was out of service although my SIM had not problems to enter the PIN password and I could see signal bars.
After a little research I discovered that my IMEI and S/N number had been changed! Especially, the IMEI number became 350000000000006 (fake one) And I believe this is the reason my signal went off!
So , I just managed to download smart switch from samsung and choose "emergency software recovery and initialization -> device initialization" in an attempt to revert it to stock rom and settings (is this method unroot the phone too?)
But after this long downloading finished , the phone didn't boot , I only see the samsung galagy s6 edge logo stuck!!!!
So , I decided to root the phone again , following the guide here (link-->), zidroid.com/how-to-install-twrp-root-galaxy-s6-edge-on-android-5-1-1/
(in short words , I installed the twrp recovery with odin and I flashed 2 zip files required, from an usb-otg-flash drive, via the twrp recovery install button) and then the phone booted normaly , but the problem with the signal and wrong IMEI was still there!
I feel that I am on dead end , I don't know what to do , I am thinking about sending it to the location I bought it but I am afraid that the warranty is lost.
Please help me restore my phone back to normal
After repeating the whole procedure several times , now my phone does not recognize SIM card at all , as if it was never inserted , wtf?

So you mean that there isn't any way of backing up the IMEI number first before rooting or changing a rom/kernel/recovery to the phone in order not allowing this IMEI bricking happen again by means of restoring from its backup?
I googled a lot and some people suggest that they can backup EFS in some way. What is EFS exactly and how it is related to IMEI?
Also wouldn't be a good idea to find a way to backup my entire OS/firmware (not just IMEI/EFS) before doing anything , in case to save money and avoid the same bricking?
And yes , I have sent the phone to samsung service , it will cost me around 320 euros , because they discovered I changed kernel/rooted the device , and they will change motherboard.
I cannot help the phone without being rooted , I love rooting but I cannot understand why suddenly IMEI got bricked.....does it worth to take risk and root my phone again? But I want IMEI or entire OS backups first before doing that and I don't know how to achieve this without rooting first...
Please help me if you could.
You can backup your full os using twrp recovery
Also your IMEI
In SAMSUNG devices imei number stored in efs partition that's why people asking take efs backup before flashing any Rom

Me too! I have the exact same IEMI number! Mine stopped working after about a month. I tried to return to seller no response. I tried to send phone back they would not accept phone, so it is on it's way back to me. Once I get it back I will try what you did.
I have taken it to factory settings 3 times no luck. I will try your process once I get me phone back.
Thanks!

I did contact one of those fellows a reputable one that can change your IEMI. Well once he heard that crazy IEMI number, he said because it was changed once before to something like he doubted he could change it again and save my phone. To try he charges 100 US plus I have shipping there and back. Yikes.
So any advice you can give me I would truly appreciate.
Thanks!

:good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good:
Mine went down recently with the exact same IMEI and no SN. TWRP was failing to restore the efs partition damaging the files in the process. Long story short, I had to manually extract the efs files, copy them across and fiddle about with permissions but I'm working again.
That nugget rings true - always backup the efs before changing anything.
But for that reputable fellow to say that the IMEI had been changed before because of what it had become, and insinuating that the imei couldn't be changed more than once was complete twaddle. I wouldn't trust him near any of my phones.
On a lighter note I'm sure there's got to be a member on here would sort it for beer tokens
Happened to me, I thought it was faulty ROM and all but then I realized it was simply apn setting. Resetting it to default did the trick. It can be found in Settings > Mobile networks > Access Point Names

Since this thread is quite old and people keep answering , I want to end it like this:
Back then I didn't avoid to pay about 300 euros to replace its motherboard to a samsung shop. But I learned lately that the issue was due to an app called "USB OTG Helper" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=en) which allows you to insert NTFS USB flash drives to your OTG phone but also enables a system partition , including EMS files to be visible.
And you can guess what happened next , I deleted this system partition which this app made it visible and yes , my IMEI was gone!!! After some months , I repeated the same delete thing , but previously I had backed up via TWRP the EFS and MODEM partitions. My phone lost IMEI again , as expected , but after restoring EFS and MODEM , the IMEI was back!!
To sum up , never delete files or partitions that look like "system" like bluetooth and imei folders when you are root AND always have a backup of all your rom via twrp or something else before changing/deleting/flashing anything related to your system.
