I know this is utter noob question but can't really help it ! In this part (and i assume that in many others parts too) of the world there are still people stuck with devices running on GB not even cyanogen or other after market rom support !
This is the main reason i was wondering whether whether goodies like 'project butter' can be ported to 2.3.6 gingerbread !
Me being a noob i don't know the technical aspects of what i just said so don't pick on me please ! This might seem like a joke to devs, if any ,who read this ! And i don't expect anybody to work on this after seeing this ! All i want to know is whether its possible ? Will there be any benefit ?and if so what would it take ?
Sorry if posted in wrong section !

Yes it's probably possible but it would not work very well due to the major differences in the way hardware acceleration works in gingerbread compared to ICS and up. Like I said if you could get it to work the instability it would cause would far outway the performance gains. As far as what would it take, libraries and binaries would have to be heavily modified and reverse engineered, then patched it would be a big undertaking. Hope this clears things up .

Okay thank you very much this was the kind of reply i was looking for !

As many of you are already aware hardware acceleration is a big part of ICS or at least as far as i have read so far is strongly embedded into that version of Android.
So i'm kind of curious and would just like to know what it means for people who get their ICS ported to their phone via Roms and not through the original creator.
Does that mean we are to have less Hardware-acceleration in our phones if any at all, or is it theoretically supposed to be as good as the original version?
That's a question that's been going through my head lately and i would really appreciate clarification. Thanks in advance
When people port roms overs, they feature the same stuff or even better tweaks then the original rom....
I think its time to change the theme of this post, as the original question has been answered.
New Topic-What do we need from Samsung to create the closest to perfect rom for this phone?
PM me if you want Samsung to give us what we need, so we can show them that its wanted.
Also you can hit my thanks button just because : )
and i quote
"because you touch yourself"
oh man
Do we have anyone over 3 in here?
im actually 4.
Hey Bro
Well we need to promote creating a perfect 2.2.1 rom, because only then can we improve on GB and ICS!

...No that makes NO sense at all.
How would improving a 2.2 help with anything on GB or ICS?
Also no ROM can ever be perfect since our GPS is screwed and it works for some doesn't work for others.
Some ROMS 911 doesn't work.
There are issues that the developers just cannot fix without a bit of help from Samsung.

I agree...we also need Microsoft to create a perfect win98 before of giving us win7.
Theory
Listen the theory is to stabilize areas there where we already have degrees of stability will help us more easily figure out other problems. Its like playing minesweeper, you eventually get good and are able to beat the harder levels. Nothing is impossible even without the help of samsung. Have some faith in the skill of our developers here bros.
Although I see where you're coming from, but just know there's major updates in the way things work from 2.2(.1) -> 2.3 -> 4.0.
Honestly, devs have gotten really far with the bits and pieces we have.
We'll never have a perfect 2.2.1 or 2.3 or 4.0, why? Because devs can't pull correct drivers out of thin air, if Samsung or T-Mobile actually supported us, it'd be a hell of a lot easier.
So, honestly.. I dun know why you're saying we should perfect 2.2.1, it's outdated, it's old.. it's a completely different base than ICS, so that comparison doesn't work.
we never had a perfect donut rom either.....

You bring out very valid points. Here is what I believe about that, the vibrant itself runs best on 2.2.1, and while the others are fun they will always be laggy. I'm not says the devs are not doing good, these are very intelligent people. I just believe that we need to get the rom working at 100‰ and if we can't 99 ‰ not including the GPS. The GPS we can overlook but force closes and other things shouldn't be a part of it. I think that moving on without completion will create a bad habit. Its like not finishing building a house and moving to build the bigger one. I don't mean to argue, I just like healthy discussion. : )

Yeah, and I completely agree, I dun think devs should release a million different ROMs with the same bugs. So, on that end, I agree with you. I'd rather have a million updates of one ROM than have a million half-ass working ROMs. But, I don't think we should leave it to only 2.2.1 ROMs, some are working on 2.2.1, others on 2.3, and others on 4.0.
I can agree with that, I think we need to find a way to get the devs to collaborate on all the levels so that we can get some sweet custom roms flowing through the forums.... and I think I have an idea.... : )

Completely disagree with you there. "Others are fun they will always be laggy."
I honestly don't know if you've ever tried any GB or ICS rom.
NONE of them are "laggy" sure they have their moments when you're running 50 apps and they lag, no ****, so does Froyo. Do you realize that a ICS rom (passion) has gotten GPS to work for nearly everyone? Froyo roms aren't even CLOSE to that. No one thats tech-savvy wants to stay on Froyo, froyo is last years OS, we all want ICS and thats what the devs like. They like challenges, and we like the outcome.
What I'M trying to say is.. why stay on a old-os when we have a new one thats available and we've already accomplished so much on it in such a short time (ex. GPS)
Well I have used them all my friend, and they are laggy no much how we deny it. So lets build this Tom house!

I suspect your phone has **** inside it.
Please open the cover and remove the battery and check for any signs of ****.
You must be in the denial stage of the whole thing.
ICS has absolute no lag when doing normal things and when it does lag, its because well.. this ics wasn't built from a vibrant source like froyo is.
Ask anyone.
You certainly have not tried ics passion.
If you did, make sure there's no **** in your phone.
Everyone who tried ics says its fast, and if they do leave its because of 911 issue or the phone mute unmute issue.

Ics has less lag than any froyo rom.
Well I guess well agree to disagree. There is no need to come up with some smart allic response with no real reasoning behind it just because you have a mouth. I'm just saying with this phone ics yes even ics passion lags, maybe not on the galaxy s 2, but with the vibrant it does. Maybe your right, that it wont lag when we get a vibrant build of ics. But for now, those are the facts. Thank you for your contribution though. : )

Passion lags.
Onecosmic's has zero lag.
You are simply wrong. Very very wrong.
OK so i just bought a Creative Zen touch 2 without doing enough research (stupid me) but for the price it's cheap. Anyway it runs Android, but the latest update is 2.2, and apparently this device has some issue with freezing (which could be RAM issues, and if I remember correctly, froyo sucked at RAM management).
As this device isn't real popular there aren't any custom ROMs that I can find. Is it really that hard for Creative to sort their issues and upgrade the systems.
I was wondering on the difficulty of making my own custom ROM, by porting from something else, another ASOP ROM maybe? Or is it just as hard as gingerbread to ICS.
Of this isn't possible I'll root the thing and just try to make the froyo ROM as light as possible.
Sorry if this is the wrong section All feedback is appreciated.

There's a button for that.
As many of you might have noticed, I've been pushing lots of MiniCM sources the last days. ICS is done and JB is on its way.
I'd like to take this opportunity and invite other developers or members that would like to contribute patches to do so. We already have some people contributing code for MiniCM and I would like to see more joining in. The code is available at: https://github.com/MiniCM
Why do this now?
This arch is reaching its limit as far as android development is concerned and there is too much ROM fragmentation for an old phone like this.
I know that most of the ROMs around are already using MiniCM binaries or sources and I'm ok with that. However, now is the time to consider contributing back and helping this project.
MiniCM is a fork of CM dedicated for these old phones. Notice that we are never gonna have official CM support, this is actually the cause that MiniCM serves
Licensing
I decided to keep my modifications Apache licensed. This is what gave android such a rapid development and I'd say has proven successful so far
I'd like to see this thread being used for Development ideas and solutions. NOT by user spamming (which will get you banned soon anyway since this thread is mod-monitored - you've been warned).
Reserving for build instructions
I can try to do option for disable/enable display button, but i'm not sure that i can do it
Lets keep this thread clean and on topic, as the OP has requested
We (the mods) will have a close eye on things, so lets not have any nonsense :good:

Oooppss, hour of my time wasted Cyanogen guys are fast
FAQ of course
and remember, for each version (miniCM7,9 and 10) there is a dedicated FAQ
that you can find here
I have a little idea. Many users of X8 and X10 Mini/Mini Pro uses stock kernel and can't unlock bootloader. I tried to make an addon to boot MiniCM7 based ROM's on stock, but still without success. With your help, nobodyAtall and other users, we can make such addon. I'm too unexperienced yet to do this by myself. What are your thoughts?

Hi eagleeyetom,
Unfortunately stock kernel is VERY outdated to be usable in modern ROMs (e.g. gingerbread onwards).
In essence, one would have to replace the kgsl system to get the graphics to work decently with latest adreno blobs. Also I'm not sure if usb would be working since this too is outdated.
Other things to note: RAM (175MB if I remember correctly) is desperately low for modern Android versions, performance would also not be good enough for daily use. Kernel-side, I'm doing my best to boost performance as much as possible by backporting almost all of the main components that android uses from later versions.
All in all, for gingerbread it would be possible with serious performance sacrifices which I'm not willing to accept (even as a user). For ICS/JB, just forget it.
Perhaps a good project would be to make bootloader unlocking work for recent devices...
I understand your concerns and also think that stock is utter piece of crap, but it's still worth a shot. Such universal patch would improve development to our old shakiras. Your MiniCM is way better than official CM - really great job. Even with these bugs you've mention it's better than spent cash to unlock bootloader. I really admire the work of Alf and you - it's amazing to have such modern kernels to over-two-years-old devices.
Worse performance is a fact, but the ability to use almost every CM7 ROM on stock is tempting. This would be a great contribution to our small community.
P.S. I also think that you should have Elite Recognized Developer title. Such good work should be appreciated.

I see what you mean. Gingerbread compatibility is feasible BUT is gonna be pretty slow - in fact REALLY slow compared to MiniCM7.
We try to give a top quality ROM, so if this would ever happen it would be like a flashable zip and totally unsupported
I hope a lot pf devs will join the development. Cause everybody is working alone and if you all work together, it will bbe better for you and all ROM users. You'll develop quicker and easier.

I think it is possible, you can try it yourself, because you are able to change the recovery of the Kernel
actually it's possible. you just need to change the recovery file in the ramdisk with the one from JBMiniProject kernel or with one you compiled.
Why do not use the "Camera ICS+" in the market to replace the default camera app instead of taking a lot of time to fix the camera ???

nAa roms are pure CM roms custom built for our device. If you see there is no third party apps. Not in GB and ICS and neither in JB.

hi
after I just put the ViperS (S3)-based JB4.1.1 w/ Sense 4+ ... for HTC Sensations on the HTC SensationXE of my gf, I was wondering why there isn't any cross-patched ViperLTE build for our Dinc4G device using the S4-version of the OneS as a base?
I mean, if it has been done for the Sensation-line, which also is S3-based since there isn't any official JB build ... why "they" (Viper ^^) didn't try to re-base the OneS S4-roms (with JB4.1.1 & Sense4+) for our Dinc4G ... i also remember that ViperLTE 2.x.x also ALREADY had bootanimations from the HTC One-Series! so it _was already_ partially based on the ICS code of the S4 OneS, wasn't it?
thanks for your insides
PS: srry if that had already been discussed, but i didn't see it so far. i love the performance of the JB4.1.1 on the SensationXE and the gallery etc improvements from Sense4+ are also very nice ... so why not ask for the same "style" of a cross-based OneS S4-build ^^
PPS: i know we are supposed to receive a JB4.2.x Sense5 at "some point" in some "possible version of our future" ^^ ... but we all know that waiting until an _unknown_ point of time in the future is very hard xD (and i dun like the Sense5-looks too much anyhow)
330 views and not a single reply? i guess that means ... a (big??) NO!!, right!?
oh well, a bit of a pity but okay. i kinda expected a zero-reply ... maybe i give it a try myself. i know linux quite well, but as i have absolutely no background in android-coding, i doubt it'll work out ... and no, if it works somehow (in booting at all i mean :cyclops ... i will still pay due respect to the wishes of the original venom-coders and definately _not post anything_ containing their code!
I just want to find out if it works. i know we have the JB4.1.1 "Infernal 0.7beta"-ROM, but i also kind of like the venom-addons, that's why i want to give it a try if no one else does. (using jose's Sense4+ kernel i think, as it's the only Sense4+ kernel we have :laugh ... it's just that EVERYONE seems to be updating to the looks of _Sense5_ and even adding ported Sense5-apps, but I just do not like their looks compared to Sense4*, srry ^^; ... but IF it does boot, I'll let you know at least the binary answer of YES vs NO. :highfive:
thanks for reading.

okay, so if they don't ... "decide" ... to port it on their own -> it just won't happen. oh, well. still a bit of a pity as they ported this/these 4.1.1/Sense4+ roms to other/similar HTC phones. just our Dinc4G doesn't seem to be that lucky
The reason behind it not being ported is that Justin does not want to. He said he would update viper if our phone ever got an official HTC update.
