Hi all,
My Galaxy S II keeps crashing. The phone will just power off and the battery will drain right out and the only way to turn it back on is take the battery out then charge it again. Sometimes if I am quick and realised it has crashed I can take the battery out and turn it back on and the battery will have drained 30% in an hour.
Does anybody know why the phone might do this or is there a way I can track whether something in particular is crashing the phone via a log or something like that?
Thanks
Yes there are apps that can do that.
So whats the score.......are you on latest o2 or latest unbranded.
Post the about phone details lol.
Hi,
It is on the latest H3G UK firmware and is unlocked via the Galaxy S Unlock app by Helroz (so via nv_data.bin)
4.0.4
I91000NELP4
Build: IMM76D.XWLPY
Any ideas and what is the app called?
Thanks
Hello,
Just thought I would take this opportunity to join this thread since I have been suffering from a very similar (if not identical) problem on my S2 too. It's quite lengthy, apologise for that - hope to give as clear a picture as possible:
- S2 originally from vodafone contract, am now with giffgaff
- 1 year and 6 months old
- not rooted, have always used Samsung official firmware
- updated to ICS 4.0.4 about a month ago(?)
- Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084, build number: IMM76D.BULPG
I must say I can't be certain if the random crashes started (it would sometimes heat up really hot, or sometimes not warmed up at all), phone will just turn off. Can't turn back on without taking battery out and re-inserting.
Similarly, the battery level will drop by 30+% once the battery is re-inserted.
Have experienced once where it started up in "safe mode" and although everything was still there, the apps I have put in folders were all listed cos the folders were gone. Restarted and it wasn't in safe mode anymore, but had to create new folders and sort my apps again.
The random turn offs can happen every few days, or twice a day. Don't know why it happens.
I haven't installed many new apps (some are by japanese developers but worked fine before and after I updated firmware), asked at a Vodafone store and they suggested it could be a battery problem. (offered to send it off for repair, but will take 7-10days and factory reset, which I want to avoid...)
So bought and changed a new battery (from Samsung website) which looked good (no random shut downs for a week) but it all started again last night. So it's not the battery.
Suspected it's most probably software problems.
After upgrading to 4.0.4 firmware, the phone cannot display phone serial number/network etc etc under the "legal information" in settings.
The battery log seems funny too, I would re-insert battery and restart, the battery log will still show it's been on battery for 20+hours.
I've also spotted that there're 2 OS running when looking at the battery log - when I upgraded from gingerbread to ICS, I did not do a factory reset (is that absolutely necessary?) but phone has been working perfectly for a few months after the upgrade so I thought nothing of it....
I wanted to post a screenshot but not allowed cos I'm new to forum... =(
Is it because there're 2 OS so it's clashing...?
Since I haven't rooted, I'm not sure what I can do - last resort is to wait until JellyBean rolls out from Samsung and factory reset when I upgrade?!
Hope I've given enough info to get help easier.
PS: Kies is testing my temper. Tried to solve the "this device is not supported by KIES" problem by reinstalling whilst not connected to internet, kind of worked, allowed me to backup small files (such as call logs) but when it comes to big bits e.g. photos, it will show the "unexpected error" message again.....
also got "wssyncmlnps has stopped" on my phone...
ARGH!!! just wana backup my stuff before it completely turns into a brick!

So glad it is not just me. I'm hoping I can use an app to log what is going on when crash time happens. Can someone tell me what the app is called please?

Yesterday my battery died half way through playing a game (not entirely unexpected, I'd been playing on my phone quite a bit that day and it still lasted 22-23 hours), I connected the charger that came with the phone and left it to charge while I got on with some uni work.
The phone vibrated to tell me the charge was complete so I disconnected the charger and turned the phone on as usual. After the samsung galaxy S2 splash screen, the screen lock appears and when I move it there are several error messages saying that various applications have had to stop (the main one seems to be TwLauncher but when I force close it, many others also force close). This continues for several seconds until the phone decides to restart itself and repeats the process ad infinitum until I can shut down the phone (I can manage this by not trying to get rid of the screen lock and just holding the power button until the menu appears).
I've had this phone a week (one of those days being today where it did not work at all) so it's still well within the return period but I was wondering if there is an obvious fix that I'm missing.
If not, I'll be ringing Samsung on Monday (I have coursework due for friday so I'll be devoting my samsung office hours time to that) and if they can't give me an easy fix I'll be ringing the place I bought it from and asking for an exchange.
So, has anyone else had similar issues and managed a simple fix?
Bump, I take it everyone else's phone is working then?
Giving this another bump in the hopes there's someone with a simple solution.
I don't want to have send my phone off and wait for the place to get stock.
there have been 2 firmware releases from samsung in the last couple of days, i assume you are running the latest firmware?
I can't even get the phone to stay on long enough for Kies to recognise it. It keeps restarting. Even when it was working I couldn't get Kies to work with it properly (I couldn't copy the contacts from the phone to the computer).
It's running the firmware it came with, but I can't check which version it is.
I was going to try flashing the new firmware via ODIN but I've been busy with coursework. Is this likely to solve the issue or will I just be giving the retailers ammo to reject my return?
go into recovery and do a factory reset

this is what I was looking for.
after googling, this sorted it out.
I just assumed download mode was the only other non-normal mode.
Thanks
Basic FAQs on the SGS1 forum mostly apply to SGS2 .Worth a look there before Google .

Couldn't see anything about a general jerky S2 here - hope I'm not duplicating something...
I have a T-Mobile UK Galaxy S2. I've had it a week and its my first Android phone so I'm not super experienced with it. I am rooted running:
Android version 2.3.3
Kernel KF3
Build Number BOKF3
About once per day the phone becomes very jerky and unresponsive. If I am navigating the menus or flicking up a long menu screen the motion isn't smooth. Similarly if I am using Swype my swipes often get interrupted by this freezing motion. The phone just doesn't keep up with my finger and in end up with an incomplete word. In the web browser it takes a while to register my finger on the screen and often when I try to scroll, I end up clicking.
The problem goes away if I turn off the phone and restart but I have not been able to find a way to resolve it without doing this.
I have tried: ending all apps; clearing ram; using advanced task killer.
Only a reset seems to make a difference. I can then be OK for the next few hours, but I think I've had this problem at least once per day since I've had the phone.
I've not notice it being triggered by any specific app.
Can anyone help me fix this? Is there anything I can install to see what might be going on? Anyone else had the problem?
Any help really appreciated
Backup all data and factory reset as first step ..

Can you advise what my best way is to do that given my current situation.
I didn't make a backup pre-root. Is this a problem? Is it just a matter of connecting to Kies to do the factory reset? Or do I need to use other tools/locate the original kernel.
There is nothing on the phone that I need to back up (other than a few paid apps which I believe I can use Titanium (free) to backup right?
Thanks
Update: Backed up my apps with "file expert", did the factory reset, downloaded fresh copies of only the apps I really wants and so-far-so-good. Thanks again.
Problem seems to have reappeared. Was using the phone this morning and it became all jerky again. Can anyone suggest other things I can look at?
thanks
If you are still on old KF3 ROM, consider upgrading to KG3 or wait few days KG6 will be released.
I see signs of kg6 in the other forums. is the version I need out now?
Im really keen to gert this shorted as the jerk is driving mr madit seemslike a pylsetjayfreezes the phone. If I am in my contacts list i can flick the screen and make the list scroll fast down.but it stops for a second then continues on its way.normally when it happens it happens s second time just when the scroll is slowed right down. Its like there is something running on the phone causing it every 1.5 seconds.
Im worried my phone is defective as none else seems to have this problem.
Any pointers to three correct kg6 our other solutions much appreciated.
Cheers

Well a couple of months later I still have the same problem. I'm now running KH3 and the problem is persisting. I've also noticed that the 'jerk' interrupts the filming of video so anything recorded while it is happening ends up with little skips in the video and out of sync audio.
I've also tried an app from the market "fast reboot" but that doesn't solve the problem. I still only get a temporary fix by turning the phone completely off and then back on again.
Does anyone know the process for returning a phone to T-Mobile UK? Am I going to be without a phone for ages? A friend who also has a SGS2 on the T-Mobile network but purchased from Carphone Warehouse is convinced it that it is the fact it is a T-Mobile direct phone that causes the problem... but they can't all be like this???
Otherwise, is there anything else I can try to troubleshoot what might be happening. There must be *something* that starts running on the phone that causes this jerky behavior but I just don't know how to identify it.
Any help much appreciated - thanks!
Well, that's definitely not normal. Sounds like an hardware issue to me. A friend of mine got his SGS2 from T-Mobile Shop Austria (with branding) and he doesn't have this issue.
- Maybe your homescreen is overloaded with widgets. Try to remove some Widgets, like Program Monitor (caused me some jerking).
- Do a factory reset (settings/privacy/factory data reset). don't forget to backup your data.
- Try to flash a different Rom (full wipe) with Odin, like KI3 (2.3.5) or a Custom Rom . I'm personally using CheckRom Revolution and I'm really happy with this Rom. However you'll lose your T- Mobile branding and your warranty, if you root your phone. Don't forget to backup your current Rom and buy / use a USB JIG to get the warranty back, if it doesn't solve your problem.
Well, I personally doubt that any of these methods will help your problem.
If nothing helps, then talk with T-mobile ... maybe they'll instantly replace your GS2 with a new one, if you explain the situation in detail. Try to put some pressure on them^^ Otherwise you have a couple of weeks to wait, because T-Mobile will most likely send your damaged phone to Samsung.
good luck.
Hi everyone,
first of all I did search forum, but havent find answer nor related thread, if I have missed it please sorry about it.
Got my SGS2 about 6-7 months ago. No issues, everything perfect. Got updated to 2.3.4 with KIES (not really fan of experimenting with phone that have price of above average monthly salary in Serbia).
Rooted device with ZergRush exploit since I wanted as close to mint backup in case I have to send it to service(dont ask, service here is pain in the butt), purchased Mobile Odin Pro (cheers to that Chainfire) and flashed Hellcat's kernel for 2.3.4 from Mobile Odin.
Everything was cool, CWM, made EFS backup with his tool too, and so on...
However, about 2 moths ago, I started experiencing random restarts of the phone. Did search, found out that it happens and actually dealt with it.
Now, recently, i switched off my phone in the evening (was on 20% and didnt wanted to leave it on charger, and didnt want it to die on me during night), and in the morning I havent been able to turn it on. Freaked out badly, only to realize that its battery was empty. Which was odd because I DID turned it off.
About few days ago, i switched the phone, and it went to full shut down, however managed to get stucked somewhere in process (LED's are on, did vibrate i think) but never shuts down itself.
After some time, when I picked it up since I saw LED's on, i realized that its very hot and that I cant switch it back on (presumably because it never got shuts down) and had to remove battery so that I can switch it back on. When I did, i found out that battery was about 15% drained in that 10 mins, and I dont know what he was computing while shutting down, but it burned the sh*t out of itself.
Tonight it did that again so I decided to ask first before I do factory reset/wipe everything (maybe update to ICS too).
So, any idea, suggestion what to do is more than appreciated.
Cheers
Polite bump?
What is the actual problem .

Well assuming you have read original post, why the hell that happen, does it happen to anyone else, and how to avoid it?
this may help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499
Well, as I said, its not bootloop.
As I said, I shut down the phone, it starts shutting down, turn on leds, vibrate and stays turned on. After that battery drains quickly, and phone gets very hot.
When I get battery out, and back in it boots up without problems.
And I dont have any cooked rom, just Hellcats kernel for 2.3.4 stock rom.
you problem
Hi there,
Here's the best way to resolve this issue you have to re-flash a fresh new rom, meaning a full installation of the android os and here is how to do it,
First search google and download ODIN to ur computer or Pc.
Next search again google and type the following ( Sammobile.com ) and register and after that type the model number of your phone for example (i9100) in the site search bar and download rom that u need and thats it this should solve ur problem
Note : be sure to have 100% battery charged before doing the above and after installing ur new rom do a full wipe and enjoy,
I hope this was helpful,
Regards,
iMatrix
Yeah, thats probably that I will end up doing, luckily i have bought Titanium Backup so that I can backup all apps that I have and restore them after wiping everything.
I was wondering that somebody have any idea what might be going on.
Thanks for suggestions everyone.
before that try wiping cache and dalvik cache

This seems to happen quite a bit on gb roms.. definetely time to upgrade to ICS
Actually from what I have read about ICS 4.03, Im actually glad I didnt.
Releasing it in that state(e.g. battery issues again, 3rd party sms programs sends sms twice...) is bad for both G and Samsung imho...

I think I'll wait few more iterations just in case
Stock Samsung galaxy note i717.
First thing I noticed was that it crashed at 40% battery. I restarted it and it said 0%. I thought maybe I was mistaken but it has crashed at various battery levels between 30-50%.each time when it restarts it says critical battery level and is at 0%.
I don't think it is the battery. (mainly because of the upgrade issues listed below) it charges pretty quickly. I have had the phone about 18 months and never really had any issues. I went through and deleted a bunch of apps (specially the "power" hog apps). I have a lot of free memory (internal and external). I did order a new battery but wont be here till next Friday or Saturday.
ALSO, at startup it says there is an update that cant continue. I read some posts and tried to check for apps that are upgrading couldn't find any... in app manager (in settings) the at&t software update is running and I cant stop it.
if I connect to keis and try to update or upgrade firmware it will download the package and then CRASH.
I am really trying to avoid a hard reset.
Please help, any suggestions are appreciated.

also, after the first time it crashed... I charged it. and the date had changed to Dec 31, 2011. 11am.
I got the phone Sep. 2012.
this is also a reason I don't think it is the battery.
Thanks for looking.

Just curious why you don't want to do a reset?
You can save your apps and data with a nandroid BU to your external SD card.
Although, restoring a back up from a corrupted system might be a bad idea.
Why not root the phone, and install something better?
done.
Update.
I ended up doing the hard reset and still had the updating issue and the crashing problems.
I installed the new battery and have discharged it and fully charged it 4 times without any crashes.
the Samsung update continues to run and gives me the "failed" warning every restart.
But at this point I am happy that it isn't crashing.
Thanks to all who suggested battery!

My wife and I both bought Samsung Galaxy Alpha phones when they were released. It was a fine phone until about a year ago when they updated. After that update both phones became miserably slow. As in, sometimes can't even respond in time to answer phone calls slow. Today I started the GPS and it didn't offer directions until I arrived at the destination. Yet, sometimes it'll be very fast as if nothing were wrong.
I know it's not a hardware problem because it's affecting both phones. I just replaced the battery on one of the phones (taken from a new Galaxy Alpha). Doing a factory reset didn't fix the problem. Resetting the phone helps some but not for long. I'm wondering if it's just FUBAR now? Should I try rooting the phone? Maybe Google fixed the problem in a later update.
If you factory reset it and restore everything back again you won't help the phone in anyway (if that's what you did), try using a custom ROM like EpsilROM, then delete unnecessary system apps, also try using less RAM hungry apps like Facebook or find a way to kill apps when you don't use them
