My S2 has been turned into a gibbering wreck after I updated the firmware from GB 2.3.4 to ICS 4.0.3 using the standard Kies software. The firmware update looked successful but...
After the upgrade process the phone typically will only last 5 to 10 mins before randomly rebooting, the battery is fully exhausted from 100% after 2.5 hours (the battery also gets really hot) and generally the UI is highly unstable, i.e. prone to stuttering and freezing before then hanging or rebooting. In short, it's pretty much unusable.
My phone ran perfectly before the firmware 'upgrade', the UI was stable, the battery lasted approx 18+ hours with my useage and I virtually never suffered any random reboots. I had rooted it using the Zergrush exploit. I also have a 32GB card fitted and run Go Launcher EX (not Touchwiz), other than that the phone is fully stock. The phone is UK SIM free and unbranded (bought from P4U) using an UK Orange SIM.
Help what can I do? Is there a reset I can perform without loosing all my installed apps? Or am I going to have to do a full reset and re-install all my apps from scratch? Could it be something to do with the memory card, would a re-format of the micro-SD help?
I don't particularly want to do a full reset if I've then got to re-install all my apps (200+ Yeah, I'm an app junkie) but I get the feeling I won't have much choice as I can't leave the phone in its current state.
Thanks for reading. *sigh* I wish I'd just stuck with GB, if it ain't broke an' all that...
S.
Try a factory reset in the first instance.
If that doesn't help, you could either try a completely clean install of an ICS stock rom; check in this thread for unbranded UK & do a fresh install of your apps. Or you could do a fresh install of a GB stock rom; check that thread I linked you to in the first instance, if links are dead, search Samfirmware.com.
Re: your question about formatting your SD card, if you do either of the above, you may as well for good measure.
Edit to add - I don't have quite as many apps as you (~120) but whenever I install a completely new rom or a major version change (not nightlies), I always do a clean install. I find it's a few hours well spent.

Thanks for the reply Sorry to be a complete noob, but what would be the best method for a factory reset? Select the option from the relevant settings menu or key in *# code on the dialer? or doesn't it matter? I'm guessing the right code is either *2767*3855# or *2767*2878# would that be right?
Thanks again.
S.
Boot into recovery is how I've always done it. From memory you can do it from the settings menu as well on stock (it's been a while/hazy memory only used stock for a week 6 mths ago).
Yeah, it's probably one of those codes (I don't remember which as I've never used the code, only seen them in posts on here).

Ahh okay, Thanks again for your help. I think it might be a long night tonight.
*EDIT* Heh I just switched the phone on for the first time this evening and it's already rebooted within 5mins of coming on just being sat on the table. :|
S.
No probs. Good luck Post in this thread if you have any dramas/let us know how you go.
If your rooted, use titanium backup for your apps. Then reinstall user apps only after upgrade. Don't reinstall system apps.

Sorted...
All sorted! I can confirm that booting to recovery mode then performing a factory reset has cured my phone of all its symptoms, the gremlins have been banished, yay!
Big thanks to MistahBungle and all who helped... My UI is silky smooth again, my battery usage is back to normal if not a little better actually and greatest of all no more reboots every 5mins.
Although I didn't have to reinstall all my apps (approx 280 ish, sheesh ) since the phone automatically pulled them all back from Google Play (aka Market Place) it took an hour or so heh, I'm afraid all the apps have lost their settings so I am stuck with plugging all the settings in each time I start an app for the first time in ICS. Bit of a pain but could've been worse. Hmm, I've also got lots of bluetooth pairings to rebuild and wifi networks to re-aquire, oh well.
Next on the list...
I'll have to hunt down the easiest way to re-root too I have a need to re-install Orange's UMA client app, "Signalboost".
Thanks again to all.

Good to hear. Glad you got it sorted
Hi all,
My Galaxy S II keeps crashing. The phone will just power off and the battery will drain right out and the only way to turn it back on is take the battery out then charge it again. Sometimes if I am quick and realised it has crashed I can take the battery out and turn it back on and the battery will have drained 30% in an hour.
Does anybody know why the phone might do this or is there a way I can track whether something in particular is crashing the phone via a log or something like that?
Thanks
Yes there are apps that can do that.
So whats the score.......are you on latest o2 or latest unbranded.
Post the about phone details lol.
Hi,
It is on the latest H3G UK firmware and is unlocked via the Galaxy S Unlock app by Helroz (so via nv_data.bin)
4.0.4
I91000NELP4
Build: IMM76D.XWLPY
Any ideas and what is the app called?
Thanks
Hello,
Just thought I would take this opportunity to join this thread since I have been suffering from a very similar (if not identical) problem on my S2 too. It's quite lengthy, apologise for that - hope to give as clear a picture as possible:
- S2 originally from vodafone contract, am now with giffgaff
- 1 year and 6 months old
- not rooted, have always used Samsung official firmware
- updated to ICS 4.0.4 about a month ago(?)
- Kernel version 3.0.15-1056084, build number: IMM76D.BULPG
I must say I can't be certain if the random crashes started (it would sometimes heat up really hot, or sometimes not warmed up at all), phone will just turn off. Can't turn back on without taking battery out and re-inserting.
Similarly, the battery level will drop by 30+% once the battery is re-inserted.
Have experienced once where it started up in "safe mode" and although everything was still there, the apps I have put in folders were all listed cos the folders were gone. Restarted and it wasn't in safe mode anymore, but had to create new folders and sort my apps again.
The random turn offs can happen every few days, or twice a day. Don't know why it happens.
I haven't installed many new apps (some are by japanese developers but worked fine before and after I updated firmware), asked at a Vodafone store and they suggested it could be a battery problem. (offered to send it off for repair, but will take 7-10days and factory reset, which I want to avoid...)
So bought and changed a new battery (from Samsung website) which looked good (no random shut downs for a week) but it all started again last night. So it's not the battery.
Suspected it's most probably software problems.
After upgrading to 4.0.4 firmware, the phone cannot display phone serial number/network etc etc under the "legal information" in settings.
The battery log seems funny too, I would re-insert battery and restart, the battery log will still show it's been on battery for 20+hours.
I've also spotted that there're 2 OS running when looking at the battery log - when I upgraded from gingerbread to ICS, I did not do a factory reset (is that absolutely necessary?) but phone has been working perfectly for a few months after the upgrade so I thought nothing of it....
I wanted to post a screenshot but not allowed cos I'm new to forum... =(
Is it because there're 2 OS so it's clashing...?
Since I haven't rooted, I'm not sure what I can do - last resort is to wait until JellyBean rolls out from Samsung and factory reset when I upgrade?!
Hope I've given enough info to get help easier.
PS: Kies is testing my temper. Tried to solve the "this device is not supported by KIES" problem by reinstalling whilst not connected to internet, kind of worked, allowed me to backup small files (such as call logs) but when it comes to big bits e.g. photos, it will show the "unexpected error" message again.....
also got "wssyncmlnps has stopped" on my phone...
ARGH!!! just wana backup my stuff before it completely turns into a brick!

Me too facing above all, unfortunately riding in same boat.
Hi to all friendly forum people!
Since several weeks now, I've been experiencing this unfortunate "media" battery drain. From the google and XDA search results I found out that others have experienced it as well but the solution offered didn't help me. One "fix" suggested to wipe the memory card to see if this fixes the issue (I thought this really might be the core problem since I had that notification center message about the isyncr scanner running on the background). So I backed up my SD card contents and did a format. Unfortunately this wasn't helpful. I left the card blank and uninstalled isyncr, restarted the phone but the media drains continues its course.
Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve factory reset.
Here, check these pictures out: (since I don't have enough posts, here is the link in this format: goo. gl / PVXGU
Thank you very much for your input! :good:
P.S. Another thing I witnessed several times now is that *some* times the charging of the phone takes about 4 hours (2x more than normal) and I've seen the phone in the last 2 months to just power off itself without any pressing of the power button or lack of battery. Still no sudden death, but I find it odd and unacceptable for smartphone of this class.
hope u have upgraded to the latest firmware. all these issues are of old firmwares. the new ones are very stable.
provide info on your firmware, kernel, etc. so that senior members can help u better.

Oh, sorry! I'm on Jelly bean 4.1.2
Kernel: 3.0.31-699321 [email protected]#1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 13 19:25:10 KST 2012
Baseband version: I9300XXELL4
I had a similar issue before and the only thing that fixed it was factory reset. I hope this time it won't be necessary to come to this...
Questions go in the QA section, not general
I have seen the media scanner go mad a few times on my SG3, go to app manager and force stop media storage, clear data and then reboot the phone.
Even after doing this the scanner will still run for 30 odd minutes after each boot. An app called rescan media root can be used to temporarily disable the scanner.
Try 'Rescan Media' app from Playstore. It stops the media scanning process from running amok.
Fail...
I decided to report on my results after the factory reset I did with the hope to fix the problem.
It's actually very disappointing to see that even after the factory reset, format of the SD Card and taking out the card altogether the problem wasn't fixed in either of the attempts.
So, I did the factory reset, went through the activation process, installed all my apps again and then used TitaniumBackup to restore the data of all those apps. Then after the phone's battery was exhausted, I charged it fully to initiate the test and see if the issue is still present. Unfortunately the "Media" process is once again the top battery hogger and is the main reason behind the accelerated drain I witness on my Galaxy s3. Another thing I witness is that randomly, out of the blue I see in the notification bar that my SD card has been unexpectedly removed and then that it's ready for access again. All in all, I can access the card's contents but this notification is suspicious and probably part of the problem, but I'm almost sure that the card itself isn't the faulty one. I purchased it from reputable source and the brand is trustworthy in my opinion. The problem has to be in the phone itself.
Another thing is that after the factory reset I didn't let the phone run without any apps or restoring the app's data. Maybe I should have, since some those app's data could be in the core of this issue and TitaniumBackup might have brought it to its previous state, but I forgot to and wanted to access some of my apps' contents prior to the FactoryReset.
All in all, this problem proved to be very irritating, time consuming and unacceptable in my opinion. Maybe I should contact Samsung or the retailer that sold me the phone since it's still warranty covered, but I guess I will end up selling it and purchasing something else, probably a Nexus 4 or an iPhone (despite all the ridicule circulating about it, being a toy with limited capabilities bla bla bla... From the feedback of numerous people I know, owning iOS devises I don't know one that had issues with them that caused them that much wasted time and energy)
So that's all I had to say. I wish luck to anyone else experiencing the same problem and take care!
Some of my suggestions here might help.

While you are sure that the card itself isn't faulty I would be highly suspicious of it being the root of the problem. Media scanner naturally scans the card and if it's faulty then naturally it would loop. I had the same issue an solved it by purchasing a new SD (admittedly my original one was quite old)

Had the same issue with my S3.
Turned out that the SD card was dying (the card brand is Team Group), this caused it to be unmounted by itself and then mounted again (sometimes showing notification “sd card removed unexpectedly”), hence triggering the “Media” scanning process and significantly draining the battery.
I created an application to monitor how many times the SD card was removed, and turned out to be unmounted every ~3 mins!!!
I then bought a new Transcend 32GB Class 10 card (made in Korea), and until now, this never happens, no reports from the application whatsoever, and no media process eating my battery.
I just published this app in the play store now, this is the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sdcardmonitor
just large # of files
Symptoms: Battery runs down very quickly, phone heats up, battery use shows Media using 80-90% or more. New 32GB memory card, 20GB used containing 120,000 files. No auto unmount/mount noticed.
Solution: Unmount memory card when not in use, must be done after each restart as well.
I have to report the "Media Battery Drain" also.
I'm on the latest Italian H3G Firmware (JB 4.1.2 JZO54K.I9300XXELLA).
I had an important drain sometimes, the last time it happened the battery was drained from 100% to 8% in 4 hours. This is not normal, in my opinion.
The problem come out after I mounted a Sandisk Class10 microSD... so viewing that, apparently, there is no correlation between the brand of the sd card and the issue, because a lot of people is experiencing issues with various brands.
I formatted the SD card, after a backup, but the problem is present even if the micro SD is empty...
Probably the solution that fits well for me is switching to Cyanogenmod 10.1 ( a friend of mine is using that rom without issues).
I'll search a solution too...
_____EDIT_____
I forget to report that my phone becomes hot during the battery draining, approximately in direction of the microSD position.
Fixed!
I fixed the problem uninstalling Google Play Music and the updates of "Music Hub" by Samsung.
Before doing this I tried to fix the issue placing .nomedia files into media folders, but that didn't work for me.
My battery lasts more or less one day against the 4 hours when the "media drain issue" was present.
I hope it could be helpful for others!
My solutions.
1. format sd card.
2. uninstall facebook app...
I've had same problem however after removing facebook app everything turned out to be fine.
You don't have to reset anything. Just format sdcard(internal and external) and remove facebook app.

Same, exact issue. I'm researching a solution now.
SOLVED: by rm'ing directory with thousands of files
SOLVED (for me). Same issue. It lasted for months. I bought new SD cards twice. Finally solved it by identifying a directory on /mnt/sdcard (i.e. /storage/sdcard0, i.e. the internal storage) with thousands of files, from a buggy beta version of a todo-list app. I removed the app, rm -rf'ed the directory, ... and the phone is now back to normal! Multi-day battery life!
TL;DR look for directories with thousands of files.
Totally disappointed

I agree, I wouldn't recommend Samsung phones to anyone by now. I'm also thinking of moving to iOS. At this point I don't care about customization, or anything, I just want a phone that doesn't lag or has this annoyances.
Alright then. Description of my problem first I guess. I was not at home and running out of battery on my S2, but play store asked me to update some application so I agreed. After this I got the message that my phones internaly storage was running low, and keep in mind that I had near to no battery life (like 5%) and was not near any sort of charge point. I tried to access the applications page, to delete some apps that I never used and when I did my phone randomly and crazily got stuck and switched off. I'm assuming it somehow drained the 5% battery life I had left.
I got home thinking I could just switch on my phone and delete some applications that I wasn't using...that was 2 days ago...I can't even get past the samsung splash screen. It goes on a horrible boot loop and I've just about tried everything apart from hard resetting and I don't want to do that as I haven't backed my phone up recently...
If anyone knows any other methods, could you please please help? I would really appreciate it if I could keep my files and just enter my phone to delete a couple applications...which I'm assuming is the problem.
What have you tried? What firmware do you have? More info would be nice

yay for quick replies. I have tried cold booting, and soft resetting...I also went into recovery and cleared the cache partition to see if it would help and so far nothing... I have absolutely no idea what firmware I have and I have no idea how to check. I never tried to root my phone or install other roms.
OK so if you have no idea what firmware you was on don't reset Cuz if you was on 4.0.4 kiss good by to your phone. Was it ICS or jb? Do you know this? Pull battery out leave for a bit "5 mins" and try again. If that don't work and your not sure on firmware you need Odin to replace firmware yes data will be lost. Can you get to download mode?
So I recently had Marshmallow firmware version G900TUVU1GPE1_G900TTMB1GPE1_TMB installed and had gotten tired of the update service running and trying to download a firmware update, I used these directions here to root my phone and then install Titanium backup to turn off OTA updating services and ES file explorer to delete the update.zip file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...l/root-how-to-root-sm-g900t-firmware-t3358190
I recently started having an issue with the phone whenever I would use it with GPS enabled or off, it would reboot and get back to the unlock screen and then go into a reboot loop, which would only stop if the battery were pulled. This happens in Apps too such as Google Play or Facebook, or Accuweather. I figured I'd try to install the Stock KitKat version of G900TUVU1BNH5_G900TTMB1BNH5_TMB, well the reboot loop issue still exists. Is there anyway of resolving this issue as I am thinking of putting GPE1 back In and Redoing the root just to undo it. I know it is forbidden to check NAND Erase All or other firmware options in ODIN. I downloaded a partition/PIT file just i ncase I need it too. I'm pulling my hair out lol.
Thank you
Upate, After I reinstalled G900TUVU1GPE1_G900TTMB1GPE1_TMB, and did a normal system recovery (no TWRP in at this point) I had enabled WIFI and it went into a reboot loop, took the battery out, then I installed TWRP- went to advanced wipe, did not select System, Only Davlik, Internal, Cache. I have not installed SuperSU. I hope this resolves the issue, otherwise I might need a new phone or motherboard...
Did you pull the battery as soon as it boot looped? Mine always loops once after flashing firmware, but boots normally on the second attempt without pulling the battery.

I have been pulling the battery, plus another oddity is when the phone goes into a loop and I can't get it to stop until after a bit, I can just plug the charger in and then It stops. Someone said the battery could be at fault. I bought a battery and waiting on it between the 14th and 16th, I will definitely follow up if that resolves my issue too.

Well I believe the Issue has been Resolved, I got the battery yesterday, charged it up over the night and started using it today, so far no random reboots or bootloops.
Differences
The Battery that came with my phone was Made in China, the one I just bought is made in Vietnam.
I will keep yall posted after a few days to see if it has any issues.
Well the battery Fixed my issue.

go back to stock 4.4.2 rom is the most I can say at this point
The 5th was the charm (I hope!)! Going on day two and at 78%, so the rapid battery drain that started right before the looping is also cured. It's a good thing this is the last of 4 Samsung s5's so cycle the house, so I had lots of spare batteries on hand Thank you!
