I have I9100 and I installed stock 4.0.4 on it, since it is from Orange and I am using a sim other than orange I want it to be rooted.
I rooted the phone using this method.
But after reading more posts I came to know that I have to install a custom kernel to stop my device from being bricked
Please help me out choosing the kernel and flashing it and my modem is LQ6

Bought an S2 today. Its a UK Orange phone.
Here's what I did.
Installed an insecure BVKE2 using Odin (original fw was same)
Rooted it, then installed CWM
Installed HyperDroid
Now when the phone booted, it has the HyperDroid rom. However, the baseband still shows the old BVKE2 version.
Does that matter? How do I change that to a newer version? Will I lose root if I flash some firmware via Odin?
Please give a detailed reply

The baseband of your phone is nothing but the modem or the software that communicates with the network. It is usually flashed separately from the ROM unless it is part of the CWM update file.
All modems work differently with networks and you will need to figure out which one is best for your needs. Certain ROM's such as CheckROM come with kitchen apps that allow you to download and apply modems from within the ROM.
Check this link for more info.
Cheers!
Thanks a lot man So I am just gonna flash a new modem and that baseband will change, right?

I have a Samgung Galaxy S2 i9100 from Bell, Canada.
I was trying to root it using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631934.
I accidentally flashed the GB kernel, not knowing it meant Gingerbread. I then proceeded to flash the ICS kernel, thinking it would replace the GB one, but now my phone wont boot, it just stays at the screen with the yellow triangle.
Any help on how to fix this would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Note: I have rooted my phone and installed custom ROMs before (CM7), so i have a general understanding on the matter, just I don't know how to fix it.
Try entering cwm recovery by volume up home and power. If that doesn't work do volume down home and power. Then install a ics Rom and kernel via Odin.
If you need more help ask me.
Sent from a amazing phone with 2 galaxys
Thank me!

Your main issue is if you flashed any kernel from that thread you linked, you flashed a kernel meant for an I9100G. You said you have an I9100 from Bell, which probably means you either have an I9100, or an I9100M. Check the label under the battery for model number to know for sure.
I9100G firmwares and kernels are not compatible with I9100/M/P/T due to processor/SoC differences.
You want this thread instead.

So did you confirm you have either an I9100 or an I9100M?
If so, stay away from I9100G firmwares/kernels/ROMs/etc.
i've installed siyah kernel v5 using odin and "omap4_all_20110627_emmc.pit". and then wanamlite jb lsj v13.0 . when i opened my phone it asked for network sim unlock. i tried the default one but it didn't work. could have something with the way i rooted the phone? My phone is unlocked. it used to work in any network. i've tried other sim card but the same problem.

Ouch.
Siyah v5 is a kernel for the I9100. Wanamlite JB LSJ v13.0 is a ROM for the I9100. Neither of these things work on an I9100G.
"omap4_all_20110627_emmc.pit" is a PIT file for the I9100G. If flashed to an I9100, it will cause many problems, and can possibly lead to a complete brick.
If you can still get to download mode, count yourself lucky, and flash a stock firmware meant for your actual model of phone. Before you do that, check which one that is on the label under your battery.
Hi, I recently got a galaxy s2 and have been wanting to root it. It has vodafone branding but is unlocked. I've searched everywhere and cannot find a single tutorial to root what my phone is running. I really need help.
Model number:
GT-I9100
Android version:
4.0.4
Baseband version
I9100BULP8
Build number:
IMM76D.BULPG
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Me too! Anybody help please. GAZ are you out there?
If you just want to root, and not flash a custom rom, then follow method 1 here. It's really easy to do from stock recovery.
If you also want to flash a custom rom later, go here and find the correct PhilZ-cwm6 modified stock kernel to flash from stock recovery. Also very easy
That is good advice. It really is stupidly easy, just copy the zip file to your phone's memory (internal or external, doesn't matter), reboot in recovery mode, then install the zip file. That's it, your phone is rooted.
Note that once you're rooted your device is modified so OTA updates probably won't work and Kies may refuse to do firmware updates any longer.
Therefore you might consider invest in a copy of Mobile Odin Pro. That enables you to flash firmware updates straight from your phone, and to retain root during the flashing. Super.
It's easier to flash Siyah v5.0.1 kernel via odin and use triangle away app

^^This
Best option.
How can that be easier than downloading a zip file to the phone and flash it in recovery? You don't have to use triangle away that way...
Maybe Siyah kernel is better, and maybe not for a noob...
Siyah kernel is better for a noob because its universal, you don't have to match basebands
Also by the time you have downloaded the right file and put it on your phone, i'd be already rooted with siyah

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

dwnld the tar file of siyah v4.1.5 (for galaxy S2) and flash the same using 'Odin', since its the best way ma8
Latest Siyah 5.0.1 should not be a problem as well. Using it for a week now.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.
