Hi!
I was hesitant to open a new thread, especially since I watched the noob video before registration. But since I really want to make sure that what I am doing is correct, I have decided to post this.
I have SGS2-I9100 with ICS (so my firmware version is XWLPD). I will be using this tutorial to root my phone (How to Root Galaxy S2 i9100! [ICS][Android 4.0+] -on galaxys2root dot com) I am familiar with the basic terminology and also understand the principles of rooting. However, I do have a question about which CF-kernel am I supposed to flash. I found two of those (v5.3 and v5.4):
From the tutorial (i can't post outside links) - v5.3
And from Android authority - v5.4
Which one should i use and are they both ok with XWLPD firmwares?
(And don't I need an original kernel after the rooting? With previous tutorials, there was always an insecure and a secure kernel)
And after the device is rooted, what is the best thing to do? I am thinking: first I would flash Clockworkmod Recovery 4.0.1.4 (and backup my original ROM), and then install TITANIUM BACKUP for contacts, apps etc. Is that good?

I am not sure about CF-Root, but I recommend siyah kernels because its safer. It should also work with your firmware version. If you are on 4.0.4, best not to have CF-Root and wipe data through CWM since you might brick your phone. CWM also comes with siyah

Yes, u can use Siyah kernel V4.1.5 from www.gohkanmoral.com ( u should Dwnld the file from 'Download Tar (for Odin) link).
this kernel will root ur phone running Ics 4.0.3 and will also install the latest 6.x Recovery and also a dedicated 'CWM' app in ur app drawer which u can use to boot into recovery
Ps- its always better to clarify if in doubt rather than getting Stuck!!

So, I played with the root apps for a while, freezing bloatware etc.
Now it is time to install a custom ROM. So I went to INDEX of ROMs page. So since I have ICS 4.0.3, I can choose any of those? What is my best option? Use one of the Samsung based roms?
Your original ROM doesn't matter. Just make sure your kernel supports the custom ROM then it will work.

the best way to say what is your best option is to try ROM by ROM
seriously, read the descriptions and choose the one that fits your needs, but before flashing new roms always do a nandroid backup, so you can restore your previous rom in case of troubles or if you just not like the new one

I recently bought Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 on ebay. After receiving it I realized that it has a custom ROM installed on it. Now I cannot update my Galaxy SII using Kies. So, I decided why not flash it to stock ICS firmware.
as fas as I understand I need to flash my phone using ODIN with a stock ICS firmware (I choose the first one from Nordic countries from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487 ).
Now what if I think of rooting it ? I mean I want to unlock super user privileges. As far as I understand I choose SiyahKernel v3.2.7.2 (from http://www.gokhanmoral.com/gm/). Just like the way I flashed using ODIN. I repeat it with this .tar file from SiyahKernel v3.2.7.2. Is that it ?
Can anyone verify it ?
Yes, but you should flash CF-Root kernel first (after flashing stock ROM).
If not satisfied with this, then you can try Siyah...

There is almost no visible diffrences between kernels. at least in normal mode.(siyah has its own CWM, way better than other CWM versions).
Siyah Kernel eliminates some of logging processes and unusefull procedures of android, so it gives you better battery life. specially in idle mode.(about 1 percent for 7-8 hour) and I feel CF-kernels are more battery consuming than stock kernels.
Also Siyah gives you advanced control over hardware, and has a dual boot option.(two different ROM of same version. both ICS or both GB). for best results you should download EX Tweaks from market.

CF-Root kernel from Chainfire is only a rooted stock kernel with a few extras (such as SuperSU, BusyBox, CWM recovery, CWM Manager app, etc.).

SiyahKernel from gokhanmoral is completely different, as it is a custom kernel with a lot of patched, parts from other kernels/linux sources/other phones/individually developed code/etc.

If you want to stay "stock" but rooted, then flash the corresponding CF-Root kernel for your stock ROM.

P.S.: Use TriangleAway app from Chainfire to remove the yellow triangle and reset the counter after flashing an insecure kernel, such as CF-Root or Siyah.
And as soon as your phone is rooted, you can use Mobile Odin app from Chainfire to flash stock ROMs, kernels and other part of the firmware with an on-device app - without the yellow triangle and without increasing the counter.
CF kernels are STOCK kernels, only with root access.
Syiah, Speedmod and others are developed as new kernels with special properties - adjustable voltage and over- under- clocking... also there is a greater risk of them being unstable
all of this makes me scared .. but, I want to take that leap ... sounds geeky to me..
As long as you understand the process of whatever you're going to do to your phone & follow instructions to the letter you should be fine.
If you don't understand exactly what it is you're going to do to your phone, don't do anything until you do.
So I have rooted my classmate his Galaxy S2 with CF-Root, which I now realized was a big mistake. It seems that he when he opens his camera app, a black screen comes but he can still take pictures. He can't also access the YouTube app. Another thing is that he lost ALL his files on his intern memory (like pictures, music etc. Which was kind of weird, because I have never had such a problem.) He doesn't really care about losing his files, contacts etc. He just wants to take pictures and access YouTube again. I read on a different topic that flashing Siyah kernel would fix this? Also, IF I have to flash Siyah for him, I have to put the Siyah kernel file in Odin in PDA and hit start, right?
Sorry if this isn't a huge question. It's just that I have never flashed to a different kernel (I have always flashed Custom ROMs with the kernel provided in there). Also is there a chance of any errors, mistakes, something going wrong? I know I can always flash back to the latest stock ICS rom, but nothing big should happen when switching kernels? Or am I wrong?

If the phone is running on ICS you can flash siyah kernel 5.01 with odin. Its perfectly safe. Just install samsung kies for the drivers. And if your phone is running on GB do not flash siyah
Thing can always go south when flashing. Wanna try a safe-friendly method for flashing custom kernels and Stock ROMs? Try Mobile Odin.
And read about all these you're asking here.

I've never really used Mobile Odin. But when I search it in Play Store all I get is the pro version. And since not many people in the Netherlands (including me) don't own a credit card or a paypal account, I can't purchase it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

It's free, pro version gets everroot, automatic kernel DL and SU & MO injects.

If you have proper drivers installed its perfectly safe to flash siyah using odin. Do not wipe or restore nandroid backups on your current cf root recovery. You can do anything after flashing siyah or dorimanx kernel
It seems highly unlikely to me that CF-root started all this. Did you flash the correct CF-Root for the correct rom version? You didnt mention which version of CF-root you flashed or what version of the stock rom he has.
If you got no experience in other kernels, why not do a full wipe and start from scratch?

If it's of further help, he was on XWLPD and I've flashed CF-Root with the latest version. The rooting went flawless on Odin, he has CWM installed and has SuperSU on there and has root acces. The tutorial I followed was on XDA Developers, altough I can't find the link anymore.
I was actually thinking of starting from scratch like you said. It seemed easier for me haha.
I also read that CF-Root has a lot of bugs..

Hi there,
I recently rooted my SII 4.0.4 to Kernel 3.2b8 but have found that I cannot view youtube videos/netflix. Searching around I found that I should root to a different kernel.
My question is do I unroot to 4.0.4 (some posts say this bricks the phone, should I go to 4.0.3?) or use Odin and go straight to Siyah 5.0.1?
Also if I were to upgrade to Jellybean from 5.0.1 would I have to unroot first or just upgrade?
I have tried looking in the noob guides but they don't seem to mention this scenario.

If your phone is already rooted, why not flash the CWM flashable version of Siyah you want to use ? But yes, you could go the 2nd option you mentioned (If you're sure that version of Siyah will fix the problems you're having; also make sure the version of Siyah you're wanting to use is compatible with the Android version of your current rom - check the Siyah threads to be sure).

To be honest, I feel quite over my head at the moment, I guess I will do what you said and use CWM to flash 5.0.1.

If you have CWM (attached to the current kernel you're running), might as well use it. Take Odin out of the equation (nothing wrong with Odin mind you, despite many n00bs being terrified of it for some reason, just no real need to use it if you have CWM).

I used CWM to go to 5.0.1 it worked perfectly thanks, can I now upgrade to Jellybean safely?
EDIT: realised that this basically overwrites the root and will have to root again on jb
Hello to everyone, im new here, but i cant find a good kernel for my SGH-i777 with jelly bean 4.1.2, anyone can help me with a link of a good kernel for my device? but i cant put the kernel called "AJK" because this kernel urts my camera, and I can not open the camera when i put "AJK" kernel, and STi No power on the device when I put this kernel only appear the samsung logo, and my screen turns black and does nothing more, if anyone knows a kernel without, or with less bug, pls pot it here, thx for ur help. :good:
First off, please use a normal font size. You're not just shouting, you're screaming.
AJK v2.0.2s should be compatible.
You could also try one of Jebo's kernels from here. That is CWM flashable but I assume you already have a custom kernel on it.

No bro, I don't have a custom kernel, because I don't find one that does not give me any bug with the camera, or any important application, and can not find any tutorial to put cwm on jelly bean, if you had any, I would appreciate if you pass me the link, thx.

Several people have stated that they successfully rooted 4.1.2 using Framaroot. You could root if you are not rooted already, then install Mobile Odin Lite or Mobile Odin Pro and use it to install any kernel you want. Both tools are used on the phone, so it doesn't even require a PC.
While they are a bit outdated (they're written for Gingerbread and ICS), the guides linked in my signature will explain the basics of the procedure.

Yeah, well, the problem is that nobody post odin kernel in extensión.tar, if not, I had flashed with odin :/, and i try with Framaroot but my device turn freeze and reset again and again (PD: when i try using Framaroot i select a xploit called Aragorn)

At least three people have reported that Framaroot worked using the Aragorn exploit, after they updated their phone to 4.1.2 via Kies. So, I'm sorry it doesn't work for you.
You will probably not find a kernel in tar format. So, you will have to root and use Mobile Odin. (This is a completely different program than Odin.)
...or you could flash mr-cook's Cooked v1.1 rom from the development forum. The Cooked rom has a debloated stock system, with root, busybox, and the AJK 2.0.5ns kernel. This is probably your best bet for a working system, but you will need to install a kernel with ClockworkMod recovery. If you are unable to get root on 4.1.2, you could always flash stock plus root 4.0.4 I777ULCL6 and follow the guide in the OP of that thread to install a custom kernel. Then you could flash the Cooked rom.

Thx bro, I flash another custom kernel, then flash the AJK 2.0.5 kernel, and it worked apparently, anything, back to post here
Apologies for the desperate newbie question, but here goes--
I have followed the instructions in the stickied tutorials or tried to follow them so far. I rooted my SGH-i777 using framaroot. No problem there.
I got Mobile ODIN and the latest siyah CWM. I flashed the kernel.
When I try to power on I get stuck at "SAMSUNG" and then phone appears to power off.
I can get into recovery mode using vol up, vol down and power. I see the Siyah screen, etc. But that's as far as I can go.
HELP!

Thanks for your response. I flashed the latest Siyah kernel after reading the "How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!!" thread. FWIW in recovery mode it says "CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2-Siyah"
I had actually factory reset my SGH-i777 before rooting and flashing so I was running the Touchwiz that comes stock with the SGH-i777.
Any steps I can take to get out from under this rock? :crying:

Yes. Not to worry.
It sounds like the system is incompatible with the kernel. You didn't say which version of the OS you were running before you installed the kernel. Do you remember what it was? Which stock comes with the phone would depend on how old the phone is.
How to proceed depends on what you want to do. If you want to install custom firmware, then I would suggest that you flash one of the stock plus root packages with Odin, and then use Mobile Odin lite or Mobile Odin pro to install the correct custom kernel, meaning one that is compatible with the system that you chose.

It doesn't hurt to do some looking.
Use Odin v1.85 for the flashing (google it).
Then find a kernel for your phone (don't try Siyah again :b), like for example, Entrophy's kernel, and flash the zimage file using mobile odin.

OK. The AJK v3.0 NoSwap kernel is the only kernel compatible with stock AT&T JB 4.1.2. However, unless you can get it onto your sd card, it won't do you any good at this point.
So I would suggest you flash UCLL6 stock plus root which is 4.0.4 from here. The OP has the complete guide, and links to working custom kernels. Once you get it up and going with a custom kernel, you can then flash CM 10.1, or anything else you want.
Edit: Cooked v1.6 as suggested by azeem40 is not Odin flashable. It is a CWM flashable zip, so you would have the same issue getting it onto your sd card. The above is your quickest route.
