Help, lost all my photos today, DCIM and sub-folders are empty - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My DCIM folder and sub-folders like Camera, Thumbnails and Facebook are now empty and I REALLY need to recover my photos, someone know a way? Searched with Astro, ES File Explorer, Total Commander even Windows Explorer and found nothing
I have a wallpaper folder at root and the wallpapers are missing too, I think every .jpg and video files are gone, even Instagram and screenshots pictures are missing too... I can find pictures only at ".something" kind of folder,
I've tried unsuccessfully ways like using DiskDigger and Undelete, yesterday was the birth of my cousin and I was the only one who take the pictures

And what exactly did you do to have them gone?

Nothing, I went into the DCIM folder to make a copy and it was empty, in the morning they were there!

The weird thing is that I deleted some blured pictures in the morning and when I tried DiskDigger I could recover the pictures that I select to delete.

[Q] file type jpg not found

Weird problem, OKAY... i have no idea why this is happening...
I can view certain jpgs on my laptop, but i cannot access them on my phone.
i can see the files on my computer, but when using astro, i can see the it but i can't open it. A jpg.
i extracted it from deviant art, eloquence by hollywoodsaint.
i even created new jpgs from gimp and put them on my sd card, but i can't apply them as wallpaper.
when i try to use Gallery, the file folder doesn't even show up!
weird.
i have reset my phone, and this keeps happening...
yet i can see the files on my computer and can view them, macbook pro.
any ideas?
thank you!
Check the folder. If you see a file called ".nomedia" delete it and the folder should show up in the gallery. The gallery app will ignore any folder with a .nomedia file in it. If that doesn't work try installing an alternate gallery app like Quikpic.
How are you transferring the jpgs to your phone? Maybe they're being corrupted during the transfer. I know I had some issues with some of my image files after updating dropbox.
hey, thanks for the recommendation, i think i like Quikpic much better than the stock Gallery app!
i am simply dragging and dropping my files onto the phone, the 2nd time i downloaded the .zip file directly from the deviant art site. it works on my computer, and actually i found that it sorta works another way.
it turns out i can see it in my gallery and quikpic app, i forgot that gallery displays the subfolder, not the main folder that the image is in. for example, it'll display folder2, not folder/folder2. so i *can* see it in gallery, however, in Astro, i can't select it to be wallpaper. it still shows the error of "file type jpg not found."
so my main problem i guess is that it won't let me apply files as wallpaper from Astro...

[Q] How to hide images from gallery

Hello
I currently have a HTC EVO 3D, and on that phone I am able to create a folder named ".story" in my file manager app, and all the pictures i put in there will not be shown in the gallery app. Works very nicely and exactly how i want it to.
Now onto my issue.
I tried to do the same on my Prime, creating the folder, putting the exact same images in that folder (all from dropbox, syncing it to my comp, phone and tablet).
But the images still show up in the gallery app.
I also tried to put a file named ".nomedia" in the folder where i keep all my pictures, still didn't work.
I tried rebooting several times to see if i had to force a media rescan, but it seems like it didn't work.
I'm running .21 update, stock, with root.
Am i missing something, or doesn't this work on the prime? If so, any other way to do so? (I don't want to use a "vault" app to hide pictures and such)

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Try the app Hide it Pro. It's free on the Play Store and does pretty much what your asking for. It also works with videos, Docs and apps.
Sorry can't post links yet!
Edit: oops sorry, I didn't read the full post
it is annoying
You are not alone, naming the folder with a initial . and creating a .nomedia file does not work for me either, and I find it annoying. Clearing Gallery cache did not help either.
Works just fine, ".foldername" with a .nomedia file in it. Does for me at least, hides it from gallery and from the built in file manager. ES file explorer picks it up but it's at that point you're not hiding anything
EDIT: Try making a file on your computer, right click and New>File, name it .nomedia, then DropBox (that's a sign up link, you'd help me out as well as yourself by using it) it. Download it and copy/pasta to the folder. That's how I did it, because a guide I read said it worked better if from the PC instead of through Android.
If you're trying to hide a whole trove of things, make a folder and name it ".foldername" and then put your hidden folder in there and name it ".foldername2", then drop a .nomedia into .foldername and .foldername2 as well, doubling up on that.
I wouldn't recommend that with app picture caches though
If you are up for using a different Gallery app, you can whitelist and blacklist folders to be displayed in QuickPic

I did as you suggested, and it friggin worked! AWESOME!, mucho love to you
Now my files on my tablet is in a folder named ".story", inside that is a folder named "story" with a ".nomedia" file in it, and inside the "story" folder are all my pictures. (I made the ".nomedia" file on Windows, dropboxed it over to my Android Tablet (I made a new .txt document, removed the .txt and just named it ".nomedia" if anyone is wondering)).
After you try it, be sure to reboot your tablet, as that forces a media rescan

[Q] photo are not placed into folders named by month

Hello,
I have tested some roms and after a while placed back my original using CWM restore. But whenever i take a photo it is saved under the folder camera under DCIM folder. Before it would save photo also under folders named after the month where the picture was taken. So when i opened up gallery is saw all the months folders instead of only camera folder with a lot of photo's in it.
Do i have to change a setting or am i doing something else wrong?
Thanks,
Francis

Previously, were the photos saved to different folders or did the gallery app make this distinction?
On my stock 4.0.3 ROM all photos are dumped in DCIM. Just like you're experiencing now.

[Q] HELP! Lost every .jpg on my phone!!

Today I got my new GS4, and was going to make sure all my stuff was backed up from my GS2 before I turned on my new phone. I went into "accounts" from contacts and checked the box for "auto-sync app data" (this is the only thing I did, period, since I was viewing my photos only about an hour earlier) and then connected my phone to the PC so I could back up all my photos. When I did, all the photos "loaded" but I could not actually view them, merely their file name. So I unmounted from the PC and went into gallery on my phone, only to find every single photo, both internal and on sd was replaced with a grey box and I cant view them. I have since reconnected to my PC, and now all those folders are completely empty. If I go into gallery on my phone, it still shows my folder names with all these grey photos, but when I use a file explorer to try and view them, nothing, 0 files just like on the PC. I have NO IDEA how this could have happen, and the only link I have to something going wrong was the auto-sync box I checked. I had about 6 months of photos I didn't back up, and some VERY important and irreplaceable pics I can't get back. I was hoping someone my have an idea as to what happen/how to recover my pics. I have gone through multiple folders, and literally every single .jpg file is gone! This includes all pics taken using the camera, any screenshots I had, all photos saved from texts and websites! EVERYTHING!!!! PLEASE HELP ME GET MY MEMORIES BACK!!!!!

Define "loaded". The sdcard mounts like a hard drive, then you copy them off. Not sure how you screw that up.

When I say loaded, I mean all the file names showed up in the folder, but I could not open the picture to view it. So it looked like they were there, but the file extension didn't show as .jpg and when trying to view them it said something about how microsoft viewer was unable to display image. I never actually attempted to do the copy from phone to pc, so there was not an issue with a transfer, but something that happen prior to even connecting to the pc as far as I can tell. After disconnecting and reconnecting, however, the files don't even show as there, just says 0 files in folder when I open it. Also, its not just sd card, but literally every single file that had a .jpg extension is completely gone....this includes internal and sd, and everything from wallpapers, camera shots, pics from texts and web, everything!
You could try Disk Digger to recover the photos.
Thx for the disk digger recommendation! It was super tedious going thru over 9,000 pics of thumbnails n all kinds of bs, but I was able to get back most of my pics from the internal memory! Now just need to do it with the sd card.

Remove your external SD card and try to access the images through a card reader. Some Sammy devices have had issues playing nice with SD cards, and the resulting behavior can be similar to what you have experienced. Technical details can be found around d the web.

[Q] Where are 'All Photos'?

Hey everyone.
Whenever I plug up this phone, there's DCIM and 100Media and all, but there's no folder that stores *ALL* of the photos on the phone like the 'All Photos' album in the gallery app.
Is there a place to easily view and transfer to the computer ALL of the photos on the phone?
Thanks in advance!
There is DCIM folder which contain all of your photos.
You can copy that folder.
And others are on SD card separately

From what I know, the gallery app just makes an album called all photos. But the ones you actually take are on DCIM and 100MEDIA. If you took photos on another camera app it would be in it's respective folder. Happy snapping!

Hey, thanks for the reply.
But I already knew that. I was wondering if there's a place to easily transfer all of the photos on the phone, not just 100Media and individually transferring from other folders.
So is there such a place?

You should press thanks because it's free.
And no, unfortunately I don't. If there was, HTC would have made life easier.
Nupzz .
There is no folder available called all photos.
It is only a software which collect all photos and show us in 1 place ....that I mentioned you above.
Hit thanks if I helped you !!!
