Hi everyone. Does anyone know how to disable the LTE radio so that the phone is only using HSPA+? I would like to do this to test its effects on battery life. I'm also considering the Nexus 4, so this would allow me to compare LTE vs HSPA+ webpage surfing experiences.
Given the battery issues I've seen, I'd love to see if this has a positive impact. LG was less than helpful when I asked them. The basically said that it wasn't possible.
But I am open to suggestions.
Change the network mode in build.prop to enable and it gives you the option to pick the network type. Didn't make a difference with battery drain for me though

Can you specify exactly what to change in the build.prop? I'd like to be able to do this.
their are a couple posts explaining how to do it... just access the service menu... no need for editing build prop... only a couple dozen posts so should be very easy to search for
got LGOG?
I don't have that same screen in my mobile network.

The build.prop does not need to be modified. That requires root permission to the phone. To shut off the LTE part of your radio simply go to settings > more (Under Wireless and Networks) > Mobile Networks > Network Mode and change it to GSM/WCDMA Only. This will shut the auto LTE off thus giving you HSPA+.
FYI, the battery life is significantly improved on 4G compared to LTE.

For your phone that is the case. For us at&t members with a e970, not a e971... we don't have this option in our menu. Build prop is what we have to work with. I find the battery life goes up from disabling data and killing apps with task manager. I can get impressive battery life via idle or talk time doing so.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34766577
Go to WCDMA Only, Modem Settings, RAD options, and pick WCDMA only. I didn't notice much battery improvement though. In fact it may have been worse. It does run cooler though since LTE makes some heat, but you get about the same thing using WiFi.
To disable LTE on E970 go to phone and dial 3845#*970#. Select WCDMA-Only>Modem Settings>RAT Selection>WCDMA only. Automatic will restore LTE.

Seriously, the best thing about the Evo was the ability to turn off 4G. Am I missing something here or did they omit this feature from the Thunderbolt? Cant find it anywhere. Without doing anything other than having email sync'd, a few texts and a few speed tests my battery is under 40% in under 4 hours from a full charge.

3) Scroll down to the 2nd drop down box and select the following :
CDMA+LTE/EvDO auto for auto switching between CDMA and LTE
CDMA auto (PRL) for CDMA only

If you want to turn data off entirely, that is in Settings, Wireless & Networks, Mobile Network checkbox.
Or do you want to have it on but slow?
it's not an option via the power widget?...oh no...hopefully custom roms will resolve this

The first thing I did was go into sync settings and disable the weather, stocks, and news syncing. Seems to help a lot, since I don't even use those stupid things.
So if you cant turn off 4g, does it sit there and keep searching for all of us not in a 4g area?
Is it smart and stops searching after a while, or long pauses in between searching?
This is for sure a deciding factor for me.
It's simple, because it does use a lot of power. LTE is not Wimax and this isn't a EVO running a 1st gen CPU.

I am not an expert, but afaik, if it does not find an LTE signal, it will camp on CDMA (eHRPD) to be specific. After that, the radio probably periodically scans for a 4G pilot in order to jump up to 4G if / when available. The frequency of the scan is probably dependent on who makes the LTE modem portion and how HTC has written their radio software.
Im sure it wont take long for someone to figure out how to modify that scan interval. Modifying that (depending on factory settings) IMO would have a good impact on battery life. We shall see with in the next day or so...
Really, that was the *BEST* thing about the EVO? I agree the option should be there, but it's not really a big deal.
Why assume it "scans" at all? I know they look for a data connection when they don't have one, but if I were designing the system, I would have the tower tell the phone what it has on the existing data connection, not make the phone ask.
I have to say that the title of this thread was EXACTLY what I was thinking when I couldn't find a way to turn off 4G. I doubt that it doesn't eat battery. Whether or not it is more efficient than EVDO is an interesting question.
I wonder if the lower band for 4G gives better performance, and thus doesn't require as much power as Sprint's.

I'd be careful with these settings. On the old evo 4g's, folks wound up killing their data and had to go through a headache of profile updates and other nonsense to restore it. Use the options under the settings menu to enable/disable lte.
Some of the code present is a carry over from other devices and isn't applicable to this one. Any non sense (as in a browser not based in sense) launcher will have access to these same functions through the activities/setting selection.
Another useful one is ##debug# and ##data#. With the later you can change a number of things, but again, unless you KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING don't change anything.
On that note, on every phone i've had, i've changed the vocoder to 13K for home&roaming. I realize this is actually overridden by the towers, but I like to think it improves voice quality over ervc.

I tried to set it in the network menu, but my only options are to choose from "Global" or "CDMA/LTE"
It looks like verizon has done away with letting the user choose from 3G or LTE.
I'm pretty upset with that considering my battery won't make it through half a day unless I'm on 3G...

Yikes! I hope that's fixed on the OTA! I'm always in a 4G/LTE area, but run CDMA 99% of the time because LTE will drain my battery in under 6hours. On 3G/CDMA, I can usually get 14-16 hours. Glad I just bought an external 1800mAh battery pack.
I'm using the app called "phone info" that was suggested earlier in this thread.
App works great and let's we switch to cdma only without a hitch, and but lte in enabled when I reboot my phone.
I also hope that this minor issue is corrected in the final product version. My phone will drain in a matter of about two or three hours of LTE the way I use it.

to make life even easier, download an app called minimalistic text. Once downloaded use it to create your our 3G/4G widget that once clicked on launches the phone info app, seems to work alright for the time being. but a dedicated 3g/4g switch would be great i dont see how something like this could be overlooked by moto/verizon
Just want to note that I'm having the same issue. I cannot find a way to turn off 4g, I tried dialing the 4636 number and it actually dialed the phone rather than launching the config menu. I'd like to be able to disable 4g at times since I am often in an area without 4g.
I was wondering if anyone can confirm if there is a way to disable LTE? I just came from the OG Razr and I was able to use the app "Phone Info" to toggle the LTE and CDMA radios. Is this app specific to Moto devices and will it work with the Samsung Radio? Or is there a better way to turn off LTE?
I'm in a non LTE area at work and want a way to keep it from searching for LTE and draining my battery. Thanks!
Edit: I guess my question is, can someone in a LTE area confirm that it is in fact working? Not being in a LTE area, I do not know how to confirm that the radio is being shut off. Thanks!

Yep, use the Phone Info app from the Play Store. Once installed, open it up and select "Device information." Scroll down a bit to a the box labeled "Set preferred network type." In the box, select CDMA auto (PRL). That will turn off the LTE radio.
Each time you reboot your phone, it will reset, so you'll have to go back into the app to change things.

I can change back and forth without any problems. After changing back, it sometimes takes a little bit for the 4G to pick back up. Are you trying to change it back in the phone's settings or through the Phone Info app?
You really dont need phone info. This phone you can change between lte and cdma. Go to settings *more settings and then mobile network. You can change between both there. If I remember correctly you can even put it in global.

Not true anymore. You can't switch it CDMA in the phone's stock settings . Verizon stopped having this option in the settings for any LTE device around the time that the ICS update went out for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX in the spring. It's not in the settings for the Galaxy S3, the DNA, or the Note 2. Verizon wants to move people off the 3G network and onto the 4G network. The only options in the stock settings for the Note 2 are Global, LTE/CDMA, and GSM/UMTS.
Since it can't be changed in the stock settings, that's why people are asking how to put the phone into 3G-only mode. There's a menu that can be accessed through the dialer, but an app like Phone Info makes things a little easier.
Yea, this option works great. I know each one is different, but with mine I had to go into the settings to get it to move back to LTE. Now that I am sure I can get LTE back then I will have qualms about using this. Thanks to the OP for this. Great IDEA!
I've always had luck setting it to "3G Only" in Phone Info, but have found you have to switch back to LTE in the actual Phone Menu.

Not true. The Phone Info app changes the entire network connection, not just data. Going into LTE only disables the CDMA radio, which is used for both voice and 3G data. It doesn't separate the two. This is well documented across forums online from people who have tried it. I've also previously tried it on other devices.
On the Note 2, if you select LTE only in the Phone Info app, it doesn't seem to actually put the phone into LTE only mode. If you exit the app and then open it back up, you'll see that it's reverted back to the previous mode (either Global or LTE/CDMA/EvDo). So that would explain still being able to make/receive calls and texts if you tried going into LTE only mode on the Note 2.
But if the phone was truly in LTE only mode, you couldn't make/receive calls or texts.

Nonrooted, completely stock.
So, I got phone info, and chose cdma (PRL) only as discussed above.
And, I'm seeing NO improvement in battery life.
Measured anecdotally, over the last several days and from battery monitor widget.
I'm always at approximately 40% by 6pm (after unplugging at 650am) with average usage.
Isn't LTE a power hog? If it's disabled, shouldn't we see a measurable difference in battery life?
Any input greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
F

The LTE versions of the Note 2 are getting battery life that's on par with the international 3G-only version, even when LTE is in use. So I'm not surprised that you're not finding there to really be a difference. Significant strides have been made over the past year that have made LTE much more energy efficient than it has a reputation for being.
The only time that I'd really think anyone would see a major difference is if you're in a fringe LTE area where the phone is constantly jumping back and forth between LTE and 3G. In a situation like that, disabling LTE will probably lead to a noticeable increase in battery life. Outside of that, the battery drain will probably be pretty similar.
Interesting - thanks for the info!
Seems counterintuitive that turning off a radio and denergizing it would seem to have almost nill effect over several hours - especially in light of the article the other day about how VoLTE was such a huge drain (approx 140%) of regular CDMA voice traffic - due to the peculiar nature of CDMA+LTE with simultaneous voice and lte data.
Odd, another data point, on mine, disabling wifi as well seems to have no substantial affect either.
Maybe this is due to the Qualcomm ?gobi? chip? Supposed to be pretty badass iirc.
Hate to necro-bump this thread, but is there a way to do this still? For whatever reason, LTE at my desk at work gets almost zero data while 3g works fine (albeit a little slow). The app mentioned previously doesn't seem to have any way to change settings.

No I have the official T-Mobile version, it is running the latest firmware and radio as of last week. Running AOSP ROM AICP.
I mean it could possibly be due to them working on towers but it still seems weird that the phone wouldn't try to connect to LTE when ever it is possibly available. It might be a placaebo effect, but it just seems like the phone has been having way more delays loading things, even if the ping is low in Speed Test.

When the phone is set to LTE/GSM it will monitor signal thresholds to try and keep you from having a poor experience on LTE at the fringe. So that if it detects your LTE signal is low it will move over to 4G or even 2G to try and provide you a better experience. When you set it to LTE only then it stays on LTE as long as you have usable signal.
T-Mobile probably has the threshold set too conservative, but that doesn't explain your poor experience on 4g (HSPA). I live in DFW and my HSPA service is fast.
Im in Dallas. Main travel area is old east dallas and north central / north east dallas..
I can tell you that im happy with both HSDPA+ and LTE with them.
on the rare occasion i have had a reception / speed issue i find that power cycling my phone fixed it. Also make sure if you do that you have FastBoot disabled.
Thats under power settings, make sure its not checked.
