Usb connection acting up all weird - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last night, I connected my i9300 to my laptop using the samsung cable included. It worked for the past 2 months without any problems until now where it would connect, disconnect, connect, and disconnect in a never ending loop. I tried two other usb cables that I have and they were working flawlessly. So I immediately concluded that the cable was the culprit.
This morning, I brought the samsung cable to test it at work. I was expecting it not to work as well. To my surprise, it worked properly with my office computer.
So with these observations, which is the culprit? I don't understand. Please help, thanks.

first thing to try is to uninstall the samsung drivers. make sure you got internet, then reconnect your phone and they will autoinstall.

Did that already. I just didn't mention it in the OP because I don't see it significant as I already tried different cables.

ah yes, overlooked that part, my bad.
it could still be a faulty cable or dirty connectors. a few people have been complaining about charging, which were fixed by using another cable. it seems like the cable that came with the s3 is not very high quality.
edit:
or your cable could just be loose fitting with your home pc. try moving the connectors a bit...

I already tried to move the cable and that doesn't seem to be the problem. On all four usb ports, the problem is there.

It could still be symptoms of impending cable failure unless it can consistently connect to your work pc.
Did you mod or upgrade your sgs3 before this happened?

Well, as I've said it can connect consistently to my work pc using the samsung cable. Nope, it is simply rooted and still on ICS. I was using it without any usb cable problems for the last two months until now.

[Q] JIG Question

Is it weird that I can get into download mode using the JIG yet no computer i have or my friends have can detect my phone?
there are 5 pins on the USB
1---- 5V+
2---- Data -
3---- Data +
4---- I.D.
5---- GND
For the jig to work you connect pins 4 & 5 with a resistor. Which means that pins 1 4 & 5 at the very least are working because i can charge my phone just fine. On my desktop at home ... i get the famous windows USB plugged in sound... IDK Anyone have any thoughts

It could be drivers or a bad cable. I have had some of my JIG customers ask me the same thing only to report later that it worked once they replaced the USB cable, go figure... Also, some roms need different drivers for the computer to properly work with it. Since you have tried on multiple computers, have you tried on multiple cables by chance? Or different ports?
Just keep trying, if you got Download Mode you are at least still OK. Just need to keep trouble shooting until you find the culprit to your problem.
p.s. I threw away my original cable because it stopped working...
I have tried many cables and drivers and ports. By any chance do you know which driver for ICS?

lmao actually no I do not and yes my phone no longer works either after updating to ICS. I had to use adbWireless and QtADB in order to adb commands into my phone. I think I seen someone in the ##icssgs channel mention we need different drivers, but it was very late last night and I was tired. I could be wrong but it seems not, as mine also no longer works via USB. My cable is extra heavy duty and gold plated so I know its not my cable all of a sudden, lol...
Pretty sure you need the Nexus S drivers for it to work. I am mobile right now so I can't search but I do recall reading something to that effect. Maybe in theexel's ICS port thread.

Micro usb cord question.

So I migrated from the original epic 4g to the galaxy s iii. And I have been using the epics micro usb charge cable since I got the phone. Today I opened up the galaxy s 3 charger and cable to leave in my front room and noticed that it is has a significantly bigger molding and what not. Everyone in the epic forum's use to rag on the epics cable also as it being very poor quality, although I never experienced any issues. Question : is there any difference in the two cords? Are any pins changed around? Because it took forever to charge my og epic.

Any general micro usb cord should work. The only pin layout that changed the the mhl adapter, but that's a different story.

Nope, you'll be alright. I'm using my old Atrix 2 cord myself....well, I was until I realized the Samsung one was longer. But you'll be fine.

Yea, that cord is monstrously long..nearly 4ft...I have 2 now, since i bricked my first one. lol.
Thanks guys... I didn't think there was a difference but having some reassurance is always nice.

I think the actual plug part of the micro usb is a little longer than some of my other cords though - I was not having good luck getting a reliable connection to my laptop with my old cords. It would connect for a few seconds and then drop, it would hang after copying a large file, etc etc. I brought the new cable that came with the phone and it connected right up. It seems to me that the port is a little further recessed than the old one. If you're not getting a good connection - try the cable that came with the phone or a cable with a longer male end...
Thanks for this question. Ive got a few micro usb cables lying around. And ive been to scared to use anything but the samsung. Really terrified anything will happen to it. I assume it'll be fine then to use my old nokia and bb micro usb cables then?
Thanks.

Cannot charge with Wall Charger, only USB works.

Hi everyone. I own a GS3 that has been running flawlessly for about 3 weeks but since last 2 days it has developed a problem whereby it only charges via the laptop USB port and not the wall charger. I have tried factory reset, flashed two different custom ROMs based on two different firmwares, pulled battery many times, etc etc, to no avail.
The problem is random, and occasionally the phone starts charging from wall charger, but after a few minutes, charging stops. I have used the original Samsung charger, my old HTC charger, with a combination of many different USB cables and the result is always the same. The USB port appears to be undamaged however as I can use it flawlessly for everything except wall charging - that includes HDMI, USB OTG purposes, laptop file transfer etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Some inexplicable weirdness.
Try to return the phone. If you can reproduce the problem in the Samsung service centre they'll repair/replace for sure.

When you connect to laptop, does it recognize it as a mass storage? Are you able to transfer files?

Yes, it shows up as a Media Device and I'm able to use it normally for transfers etc. There is absolutely no problem when connected to laptop, The issue is inability to charge from wall charger - any kind, and even that is sporadic. For example, if i try connecting wall charger and the phone doesn't charge, I can jumpstart it by connecting to USB port on my laptop for a few minutes, and then when I connect it to the wall charger, it starts charging again... but this lasts only a few mins before it stops charging again. With USB however, it never stops and charges all the way upto 100%
did you tried a full wipe via odin? also can you charge your mobile offline via AC? as you said you can transfer data perfeclty via usb it seems the port is damaged at all. One more thing, did you tried charging with different plug points?

Yes bala I have tried every single PowerPoint at home. No difference. The problem is sporadic.
What do you mean offline charging? Do you mean airplane mode?
I haven't tried a wipe using Odin...but I have done a full wipe and system format and clean installed CheckRom v2 after the full wipe via CWM recovery.
Is wiping via Odin different from wiping via CWM ?

i meant charging the phone after turning it off.
odin generally flashes all partitions so it should be better than cwm in this case.

I have tried three different chargers. Two Samsung and one HTC. Same problem. Full Odin flash is in order I guess... but I'm not in my hometown right now so don't have the bill etc for warranty. When I get back to Delhi I'll try calling in for a replacement.
For now I flashed the latest cfroot via Odin and looks like the charging issue is gone for now, but like I said before it is a random thing...can occur anytime. I'll keep a lookout for this...

same problem since yesterday, infact i m not able to charge throught either of wall charger or usb port.....after i reboot my around 2-3 times i can charge back through wall charger but as soon as i connect back to pc it stops charging.....could this because i m using a diffrent usb cable in pc?
I think i know the reason
The charging port has many pins(see the usb port in light, you will see metal pins having gap in between of them) inside it
pc and charger connects to different pins, so I think charger pins would be damaged or covered with an insulator like dirt
IF YOU LIKE MY WORK, THANK ME BY THE BUTTON BELOW

So it looks like this problem is more common than I thought it was...and I'm not the only one...
Will have to do some more reading up on this. BTW, tried a small fix and the charging seems to be OK now... but will have to test it for a couple more days to actually declare it a "fix". Let's see what happens over the next 24-48 hours.
me too havin same problem
I have the opposite problem.
When plugged into PC I can transfer files etc but its not charging.
It charges via wall charger though, but I prefer to charge via USB.
I really don't know what we should attribute this problem to... I'm going to try getting a warranty replacement, but I seriously doubt Samsung is going to entertain that as the problem is sporadic and not consistently demonstrable....
Maybe I'll just wait till the USB dies totally before claiming warranty...

USB device not recognised / This device can perform faster

A month or two ago I started experiencing problems while connecting my S2 to the PC or laptop using the data cable.
When I connect the cable to my S2 on the PC or laptop it comes up with the balloon messages in the system tray:
USB device not recognised.
Then a short while later it comes up with another balloon message:
This device can perform faster.
Sometimes while transferring data, it will disconnect and the file transfer fails.
Sometimes if the cable is moved slightly it will cause the device to disconnect from the PC.
And, of course, the file transfers are much slower than they should be and much slower than they used to be.
GT-I9100 Rooted.
I9100XXKKI3
Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock (Frankenstein)
I haven't touched any ROM or flashed anything on this in like over 8 months so it's nothing to do on that front.
I removed micro SD card and tried reconnecting again, still the same problem.
I've tried different computers, still the same problem.
I've used different cables, still the same problems. Tried enabling and disabling USB debugging. Same problem still remains.
The USB cables and computer and laptop work fine with my S3.
All the correct drivers are installed for the S2.
I'm resigned to thinking it's a hardware issue as I've exhausted other options. Is there a simple fix or will this need sending back to Samsung?
I've had the phone over a year now but someone told me the warranty is two years?
All help appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.

Probably because his USB port doesn't currently work properly.
@OP, this is often caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. You can try cleaning it, but you may need to replace it.
Try cleaning it out with a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work, take the battery out, and try cleaning the port with a small q-tip with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; let it dry for a while after that, then replace the battery.
If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace the part for the USB port.
If your warranty is still good, you could try to go that route, but you'll need to unroot your phone. Otherwise, I've heard it runs about $15 for the part, and you can replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to it, you can have a cell repair shop or Samsung service center do it for you, but it will probably be significantly more expensive than $15.
My opinion based on your description is the USB socket on the phone is wearing out/damaged. The USB socket is on a small circuit board separate from the main logic board. It's easy to replace and the part is cheap on EBay. Search for a disassembly/tear down video and judge whether you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the very quick responses guy. They were very thorough as well.
I will look into cleaning the port and if it still doesn't work I'll consider having it repaired. My soldering skills were excellent but I haven't done it for a few years, so may leave it in someone else's hands.
I haven't upgraded to ICS as I was very happy with my phone at the time. Also, a couple of friends who had upgraded to ICS on their S2 regretted it due to numerous problems, which put me off upgrading.
You can still use mobile odin and theres no soldering needed with the usb,it comes as a board with a ribbon cable.

I've had a look on the Samsung website here:
w ww.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It seems as though the warranty period on my phone is 24 months so I might just get it done via Samsung.
I'll contact them in the morning and see where I stand. If not, then the replacement USB board connected by a simple ribbon cable sounds like a doddle. I've seen a grade A condition part on ebay for about £8 delivered.
Thank you once again.

This is a Cable problem. The USB port of your device is wider now, that's why the cable doesn't fit well. Buy a micorUsb cable for blackberry, it's always very full and thick, then use it to connect your phone. The issue should be resolved.
I once had the same problem with my Nokia N8 and using a Samsung cable (which looks fuller and thicker) solved it.
Yeah warranty should be 2 years BUT youll have to unroot it first if your sending it to them.
They may also wipe your phone and stick on 4.0.4.
If you get the board yourself, check the number is going to be the same i.e the spare one I have here is GT-I9100 rev2.2.
Also other people have got a replacement board and the mic doesnt work(think the boards are sold as refurbished).
So its up to you which option you go for.

S4 stuck in charging mode

Hi,
When I plug my S4 into the USB port on my laptop it doesn't try to install drivers or anything. The phone starts to charge and that's it. I have USB Debuggin checked. I have tried this on 3 different Windows 7 PCs. I have latest drivers installed but that doesn't even matter because it never get to where it asks for drivers. I've looked all over for USB options and there isn't any.Anyone else ever have this problem?
Any help appreciated.

ok I wiped and reset my phone. All I did was unlock dev options. Check USB debugging and unknown sources under security and again my PC doesnt acknowledge it at all. It just goes into changing mode. I'm stumped
Edit: I'm going to wipe again and this time plug it in before I unlock dev options..
Edit2: wiped again, plugged in to PC and same thing....nothing..
Bump for help!
Are you using the supplied Samsung cable? I have at least 10 generic "micro usb to usb" cables at home that only allow charging. And only 2 or 3 that actually allow data transfer and make my computer see the phone. Seems like the one that came with the phone, and 2 of my motorola branded cables work, but none of the other many cable do anything other than charge the phone. Other than that, i'm stumped. I'd take it back if all else fails.
