[Q] How to Root After DirtyRacun S-OFF - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I realize this is an easy question, but I just want to make sure I do this right. Being a newly released tool, I couldn't find anything that gave me 100% confidence that it is exactly what I should do.
So I was completely updated with my firmware, did the DirtyRacun, so now I'm S-OFF and ready for MeanROM, but first I need a recovery and root I suppose. Anyways, I need recovery first, but do I even need root before I install MeanROM or no? Nicely laid out steps would be greatly appreciated. My head hurts from everything that I've been through past few days. Thank you.

Youre basically done. Download recovery from the link I provided and Then flash mean ROM. The rom itself will give you root
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

or if you want to keep your own stock rom and build what you want out of it (since you're somewhat comfortable using fastboot now that you've done the DirtyRacun)
you could fastboot flash TWRP and then once you've got it loaded flash the ZIP for SuperSU http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
it says there that you have to be rooted, but that's for installing via the market or goo manager. flashing the zip through recovery will root your phone

Kinda what I was thinking. Tried it. Installed via bootloader method after using ES File Explorer to put zip on SD Card. In TWRP now, so I should be good from here. Thanks.

Rooted not Rooted

I tried to root it says Im rooted then Im not rooted then I cant install busybox. Superuser is installed. What do I do root again?I tried the the easy install method like I used to and always worked but I lost the file I used to use. Guess I will eventually have to learn ADB.It says s-off which I thought it meant rooted.
Rebooot into hboot, look for s-off if it says that, your rooted. If it says s-on than it isnt

It says s-off but cant do anything, cant install busybox, do anything with rom manager etc...
Too many possible solutions...brain exploding...
Roms are "rooted" so the problem is in the rom you have itself. If you have no recovery, simple suggestsions are...
-See if you are able to install an updated version of Superuser from the Android Market and fix your permission problems and let you reflash recovery.
-Flash a custom recovery via bootloader and flash whatever rooted rom you want from that custom recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179386
-Flash a pre-rooted stock PG05IMG.zip in bootloader such as the custom one in the rooting tutorial
somebody set you up the bomb?
were you able to get clockwork on at least(if it didn't get put on automatically when you s-off'd)
I couldnt get into clockwork, i renamed a stock debloat rom and tried to load in recovery it says it loaded but it didnt nothing happened.
Run step 3 again

Screw it it says s-off Im rooted but then I cant get into clockwork or busybox Im just going back to stock.
Try flashing a different rom, like gingeritis or bamf. If it doesn't load through cwm, try installing a working cwm like the above posts mentioned. And then try again. My guess is your still on a stock rom so there is no root functions available to you, or your cwm is corrupted

His main problem is that he says he doesn't have a custom recovery (clockwork) installed. So he can't flash this.
Only thing he can access and use is hboot right now so using my second or third suggestion above (which he would have to do in order to flash that zip) would definitely fix his issues. The first suggestion I gave would help in some situations so I added it first but as I said, 2nd and 3rd would work fine.
All this assumes he actually doesn't have a custom recovery but does have engineering hboot s-off. If this much isn't true, then he could just unroot and start over using the pinned guides in the dev section.

You are correct my friend, i have eng hboot s-off but I just need to follow the directions in the dev section if I really want to pursue this further. I went back to stock and when I have time or feel like trying again I will follow the guide as I re downloaded the files again.
I do have another question as Im a little slow lol. I have or am installing the sdk package now and to follow the dev root how do I get to the adb section. I just start the manager and go from a c: prompt nad use the line by line from there as if I tried using terminal from the phone it would get lost right? Sorry for the stupid question its just I used to use the auto root method that I had and it always worked then I lost the files. I also install all or everything it wants to for SDK correct?
ok on step 5 and it says device offline or error and is not working a little help please.
Ok I tried adb and I get errors , permission denied, tried several auto roots and get errors. This phone really doesnt want me to freaking root. Time to get a different phone or actually stay stock as it runs good and battery life isnt bad.

No root - HBoot 1.58 - Phone unlocked - Recovery flashed

Can someone help me root this phone?
I unlocked it via HTC method and I even flashed a recovery. But when the phone boots up, I am unable to use any super user permissions. So, I download root check and it says I am not rooted. What am I doing wrong?

I had also did that. Thing is, when I booted back up, my phone was in the state of not being rooted. Even after flashing the superuser zip.
So, what I did was flash the boot.img from the rom I wanted to flash, through fastboot.

Months ago I used HTCDev to unlock and flashed TWRP recovery and su-2.3.6.3.zip from this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
I was underwhelmed with the MIUI ROM and got curious about Sprint's ICS update, so I relocked the bootloader and ran the 2.17 RUU.exe, then updated to 2.89 OTA. After that I could use my original HTCDev Unlock_code.bin to unlock the bootloader, but su-2.3.6.3 would not give me proper root access (verified with Root Checker app). Thankfully downloading Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip from http://androidsu.com/superuser/ and flashing it through recovery worked.
I now have root with the stock Sprint ICS. Why? Because I wanted to keep the 3D and Wimax functionality (i know, i know) while still being able to run TiBackup to freeze the goddamned pre-installed apps that everyone hates. I'm sure this is stated elsewhere in the forums, but I read your post before I resolved my issue so I thought I'd come back and reply just in case you or anyone else were still grappling with it.

Thanks a lot, that really helped me to root a brand new stok rom on the Sprint evo 3d!
Just for future reference when you download a super user zip, notice the letters next to superuser efghi those letters represent the past android os's (e)clair, (f)royo, (g)ingerbread, (h)oneycomb, and (I)cecream sandwhich. Always look for that if you plan to root a stock Rom.

Root and ROM installation Question

Ok so I used to have a rezound with an unlocked bootloader and the ViperRez Rom installed on it. I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 and sold my Rezound. A week or so ago my S3 took a crap so I purchased another Rezound off Craigslist. I want to gain root again and install a stable Rom. Can someone point me toward a guide that can walk me through this? I wasn't sure if the guides I have been reading were for a rezound that was still running gingerbread or ics or if the guide would apply to a rezound that was running either one. Also, if anyone can recommend a very stable rom I could install that would be great. I'm also tempted to try the trick to gain s-off but I'm a lil afraid to do that. I read somewhere that a paperclip can be used in place of the wire. Is this true? If so, ill give it a shot. I know a lot of members hate posts like this so I apologize in advance. I don't wish to ruin ur day. I'm not looking for anyone to hold my through this just point me in the right direction for root instructions and recommend a good Rom. Thanks everyone!!!

The unlock process via the htcdev.com website is still the same. If you're just going to replace the factory rom, unlock your phone, flash a custom recovery (TWRP, Amon-Ra or CWM) then the rom of your choice.

For the recovery install, download the PH98IMG.zip attached to the post above, stick it on the root of your sd card, power off your phone, pull the battery and stick it back in, power the phone back up while holding the volume down button to get into the bootloader, press power again then volume up when prompted to install the recovery.img then reboot.
Remove the PH98IMG.zip image immediately from your sd card's root, download the rom of your choice, boot back into the bootloader using the process above then select recovery to get into Amon-Ra and install your rom.
The one issue you will have with being s-on is you need to flash your kernel using your pc via fastboot, you can reboot into the bootloader from Amon-Ra and flash the boot.img you extracted from the rom download zip.
fastboot flash boot path/to/boot.img
Enjoy.
Thank u! I think the kernal part is where i would have gotten screwed up. So I download the Rom of my choice and open the zip file, remove the boot.img, put it on the root of my sd card, and then do I flash the Rom first or the boot.img? Also I remember having issues doing this before where I kept being prompted to.install the boot.img in the bootloader screen. After I install the boot.img how do I remove it from my sd card so it will stop asking me if I want to install it? Thx again!!

You put the boot.img on your PC so you can use ADB/fastboot to flash it to the phone.
You're confusing that with installing a kernel using a PH98IMG.zip file. That will get picked up anytime you boot into the bootloader if it's sitting on your SD card. You can remove those using a file manager app to access the SD card or plug into your pc and mount the SD card.

[Q] How do I install 3.17 update via TWRP?

I downloaded the update and when I choose to install it, my phone boots to TWRP. I found the 3.17 file in my downloads but TWRP fails when I choose to install it. I am rooted and S-OFF. I don't really care about losing my root since I just rooted to uninstall bloatware and I'm running stock 3.16. Any ideas? Thanks guys!
I believe you need to have the stock recovery on your phone in order for the update to fully automate through recovery etc. It's basically finding your recovery but since it's not stock it's just stopping...in general evo lte forum someone mentions how to do it or even a rooted version has been posted by captain throwback...hope that helps.

Yeah, you just need to put it on the root of your external sd card and rename it to PJ75IMG.zip. Reboot into bootloader and it will find it automatically and ask if you want to install. You don't actually need the boot img, that's just the kernel for the latest sense build. You'll want to keep the one that was installed with your rom.

Mind if I ask why are you trying to unlocked you bootloader and soff or your already soff?
Ok, I'll try to help best I can. Hopefully one of the more experienced folks can chime in too as they'll probably be way more helpful. I've got a couple guesses, but need to know a bit more. Please know that I'm only providing my best guesses as I haven't run into this problem.
What firmware version were you on when you tried rumrunner? It sounds like you already had an unlocked bootloader and s-off... through moonshine. Did you end up with a locked bootloader? If so, how? You mentioned that you went back to sense 5. What method? Did you ruu back to a stock rom or just flash one of the Custom/stock ROMs.
Here is one possible option. I would suggest reading through the thread thoroughly before diving in...
- Go back to 100% stock with locked bootloader and s-on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2293919
Then make sure you've taken any OTA updated to get to 3.06.605.4 and you should be able to use rumrunner.

10-4. That's kinda what I thought too, but figured I'd try to confirm by asking a few questions. I have seen a few people get stuck with s-off but a locked bootloader if they goof up the process trying to go back to 100% stock. Thought I'd ask the questions just in case this is what he did.
Ok, I would like to keep the Stock Android, but would like to have root access.
I an unsure how to gain root access with out turning S-ON.
I could follow that and turn S-ON again,
But if you have another method of gaining ROOT with out flashing a custom ROM,
I would be grateful for your assistance.
Sorry for any confusion on that,
I spent 10hrs trying to figure this out yesterday,
it was necessary to put down and look at another day.
I have tried downloading superuser and supersu from the play store, neither give me access to root

From what I have learned so far, running rumrunner when you are already S-OFF will net you a FAILED message. if your DNA is already S-OFF then feel free to flash whatever ROM you want.. well sorta, make sure it's for the DNA, and flash at your own risk.
I took the OTA after achieving S-OFF with moonshine and it removed my root access... now I am in this boat where I want to regain root.
I have finally finished downloading the zip from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560010
But I have no idea how to flash it, step by step instructions would be helpful since this is my first flash and I have yet to figure it out. I have tried fastboot flash zip but that didn't work, and I am unfamilar with this....
The FAQ here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2188944
is of no help unfortunately....
I found some Instructions that tell you to boot into recovery, but when I try to boot into recovery all I get is a RED ! and Triangle above a screen. like something went wrong :/
Start by downloading ROM and the patch and copy the file to the SD card’s root in your device.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode. For this, power off your device and restart it keeping the volume down key pressed. Your phone will be booted into bootloader fastboot mode.
In the Recovery mode, use the ‘Power ’key to select and to navigate use the ‘Volume’ keys.
Use ‘backup and restore’ option to create a backup.
Now perform three steps in a row: first wipe data//factory reset, then wipe cache and lastly wipe dalvik cache accessing the advanced menu.
Now install zip from your sdcard, then select ROMs zip file you copied to your phone and choose zip.
Redo it for Patch file once you are done with ROM installation.
At the end, reboot your phone.
Lovely I didn't have a recovery installed, using the tools: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219175
I installed the TWRP 2.5.0.0 recovery,
THEN I was able to enter recovery and flash the ROM.
WOW what a experience, this has been.

At the end, reboot your phone.

well glad you got it sorted out.... it can be quite a lot to take in if you have never done anything like that before. but once you have done it a few times it is much easier to do and remember especially if you run into problems.
cheers
and happy customizing.

Rumrunner doesn't update nothing. Try asking your question again.

if you want the 3.06.605.4 update (aka 4.2.2) and you are already s-off - and want STOCK no root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2570548
if you want root to go with that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560010
if you are stock 2.06 you can take the OTA even if you are s-off, but if you have root, you will loose root taking the ota.

if you want to revert to stock, since i didn't flash the second till i flashed the first, i would suggest that you do that, if you want to go with another custom rom, follow it's instructions, if it asks for a specific starting point, aka stock 4.2.2 then flash the first one then flash the custom one.
