Figure out which app it is that causes a reboot? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I am having an issue with my almost brand new I9305 and I also had it on my I9300. And that issue is that when I close my cover on the phone and put it in its pouch that I carry in my belt there is the random odd chance that the phone will simply reboot for no apparent reason. Just today I heard it reboot, once rebooted i heard my text tone go off followed by another reboot. But is there some way to tell which app it is that crashes etc and thus takes the phone with it?
It can lay on my desk for hours with the cover closed with no issue. But the second I put it in that pouch it starts acting up and as I stated my I9300 did as well. But is there any way to tell which app is the culprit so I can delete it?

First off - what is your cover made of?
Make sure you have no cards in the pouch, especially not ID, public transport e.t.c which have NFC chips.
Is your phone by any chance undervolted or overclocked?

Not undervolted nor overclocked. Both the 9300 and the 9305 are stock, but rooted. And the pouch isn't like a wallet but move like a "pouch" you put the phone into and then a flap goes over that "locks" with velcro. But I only have the phone in it, nothing else at all.

Exactly same issue here: S3 randomly restarts while i wear it in a pouch. It can lay down in the same pouch - no restarts. I'm wondering if the pouch is too tight and power button is bein pressed sometimes? Just ordered another pouch to check this. My pouch has magnets. Can it be the reason also?
If you will find any solution please post here.

My pouch doesn't have magnets but velcro strips

It looks ...
I looks a little like an electrical contact which has problems after shocks - probably the contact on the battery? It might also be something on the mainboard, but that would be more tricky to test.

Have you tried to use another case or something like that? Maybe is the pouch... Which apps do you have installed anyway?

I had the same issue with one of those "leather-like" pouches. The description you mention about it with velcro, and a flap that closes over it sounds very similar to mine. I determined it was because of the flap pressing the power button. I couldn't find any other reason. And why does this happen when you're using it on your belt, and not when it's laying flat on your desk? Not trying to be offensive, but are you a little overweight?
In my case I discovered my belly was creating a little more pressure than normal on the pouch, so it was causing more pressure on the flap, and on the power button.
I had to go return the pouch to the store where I got it, and now I am looking for one of those plastic cases with a belt holster to replace it. :crying:

Metal Battery Cover

Hey guys - does anyone know of any after-market battery covers for the HD that would be metal - specifically for the purpose of attaching to a magnet? I purchased one of those magnetic "cradle" kits that is basically just a big magnet you stick onto whereever, with a little metal slab that you stick onto the back of your phone. Then - you can just stick the phone up close to the magnet and it sticks - a perfect low-profile car cradle. The metal slab that sticks to the back of the phone is thin - it doesn't really stick out any further than the camera housing - but it still isn't as sleek as just the phone by itself. I thought a replacement battery cover that sticks to the magnet would be perfect. So... does anyone know of any? Or perhaps a vendor that could custom-machine one?

I made my own magnetic car holder solution. Didn't cost much and can't imagine it work better than this...
I can't see what you've done there... It looks like some sort of metal on the battery itself, so that the regular cover works fine... What is that? How is it affixed?
Jouh has placed 2 razor blades on the battery.
Cool! I'm going to try that...
just don't take ur phone to the airport...... they might think ur going to use the razorblades for other non magnetic purposes.
Ohh! Good point! I would have completely forgotten about them and then been really screwed - I actually have to run my mobile through an X-ray every day at work... That could be an issue. Oh well - back to the drawing board...
just do the same with any thin metal i.e. sheet steel.

I really wouldn't recommend directly attaching the phone to strong magnetic sources. It may impede the functionality, reduce or affect the battery operation, interfere with the many antennas in the phone, not to mention run the risk of corrupting memory sticks etc?
The phone itself isnt that heavy so probably wouldnt need a strong magnet, but you'd want to use something quite strong just to hold it in place. Imagine driving over a speed bump or pot hole which dislodges the phone and makes it go sliding across your dash board and out of an open window. (worst case scenario..)
If youre looking for a quick release holder I would recommend something that you clip the phone into like those hip holsters and then find one that has a socket connection to a window mount.

I used the same razors and the same magnet (This one) with my SE P1i for 1½ year without any issues.
And the phone doesn't move 1 mm even driving over the biggest speed bump in Sweden.

I honestly couldn't think of one thing that a magnet could have an effect on in the phone, certainly not the memory. The only type of memory that is affected by magnets are HDD (because the data on the disks is stored magnetically) and credit cards (once again, data stored magnetically). However, RAM/ROM is completely different and relies on gates and latches to store data, neither affected by magnet. Not to mention even if it did have an HDD (like old school mp3 players/iPod) it would take a strong magnet (mainly electromagnet) to corrupt the memory. Likewise, I can't foresee it having any affect on the battery or interfering with the antenas (unless you're using some super strong magnet....which you're likely not)
One of the only build quality problems i have with the Touch HD is that the battery cover creaks when pressed in certain spots.
To revive this topic, does anybody know of an actual aftermarket battery cover for this phone, preferably metal?
I searched google to find no results. It seems like it would be a good idea to make these
You can also shave the inside of the battery cover with a small sander. Than add ANY kind of magnet that will than fit inside the cover. The plastic cover is THICK so you can shave enough for some type of magnet.
I would also like a metal/rubber etc back cover. The quality of the orginal cover is driving me nuts..
Has anyone found this kinda aftermarket item?

Magnetic or Snap closure on hip holster

So I am looking at getting a leater hip holster. I know the style I want, but I see there are ones that have snap closures and magnetic closures. The magnetic seem better from the idea of not having to put pressure on the phone to close it, but on the other hand it seems like I'd rather have have the snap in terms of security (meaning, the snaps are theoretically less likely to pop open when shaken, bumped, or caught. I am sort of active and in a little more rough setting than your normal office.
Anyone have any comments/thoughts? Is this even a worry with magnetic closures?
The magnets will most likely cause the 'keyboard open' and 'stylus out' switches in the phone to read incorrectly when it is removed from a case with a magnetic closure. It doesn't do any harm, and the keyboard switch can be remedied by a registry edit.
See this thread for more details.

I have magnetic closure, and it works fine for me. The last several cases have used this technology. I have never had the case open unless I did it.
Right now I am using a holster case with a magnetic snap. the magnet can make the phone behave as the other poster described but I simply face the front of the phone to the back of the case. Just put it in backwards, all works the same anyway.
I would like a case though that might flap over to protect the front but allow the keyboard to slide out etc so the phone can stay in the holster if that makes any sense. Dont know if such a thing exists.
im using a magnetic case and have no problems with any odd behavior (i also put it in screen inwards)
i used to use a snap, but i didnt like putting the pressure on the phone either, and oddly the snap case was the one that was constantly popping open, probably because the snap has a larger profile than the magnetic clasp, and also once the snap pops open its open, with the magnet it usually settles back in closed position even when it does pop open
I've seen that odd behavior with the case I have now. Sometimes my phone just unlocks itself just by placing the phone into the case or taking t out. It has a very strong magnet though. The original HTC that comes with the T7373 has a much milder magnet which doesn't cause any of the problems.

Problem with official Samsung Galaxy Note 3 S-View Cover

Hey guys,
I got an official S-view cover from ATT store (Black) for my new note 3. I love it except for one major problem. When I fold the cover open around the back and set it down on something like a desk or table. Eventually the phone will sit completely flat against the cover and I am noticing that the cover will engage S-view mode on the phone while it it folded around the back of the phone. This is super annoying, because when its in S-View mode the phone is essentially locked and I can't do anything with it unless I un-fold the cover from around the back. I thought maybe I had a bad cover with super strong magnets or something so I returned it to ATT and bought another one from T-Mobile (This was the advice I got from Samsung support). I having the exact same problem with this one. Now I think its my phone. I can replicate this problem anytime by simply putting pressure on phone the and cover while it is folded around the back. When I hold the phone in my hand with the cover around the back it is not as prevalent because phone usually is not sitting completely flat to the cover (because the cover is still new). Once it breaks in and gets flimsy this will happen all the time completely limiting phone functional while the cover is around the back. I had the an S-View cover on a S4 and it never had this problem. Can any of you guys replicate this issue or do I have a bad phone. Please help, I need to know if I need to exchange my phone. Thanks in advance.

I've got the same problem here. It seems to be an issue of either the little magnet on the bottom of the cover being too strong or the sensor on the phone being too sensitive. Definitely annoying and poorly designed. I don't know of any solution. I just wedge my finger behind the cover to prevent it from tripping, but that's hardly a solution.
Can't help you with this issue.. but I got bought two knock-offs on the web and never experience anything like that. Probably the way it's built with the OEM case.
I have the same problem with my sview case for note 3.
Interesting issue. I have the wireless charging s-view case and I can confirm that this dos not happen with it. I guess that is due to the thicker back cover portion.

Rugged flip case for all round protection?

I have a Ringke slim. I usually keep my phone naked but when I go mountain biking, I've been putting this case on and putting my n6 in my backpack, however I have some scratches on the glass that I'd prefer don't get any worse.
I'm wondering if any of you have come across what I think I want out of a case and whether you can recommend me something please...
Wants:
- Rugged, hard back otter box / UAG rugged (perhaps not so extreme )... Basically if I fall off and land on my backpack i want as much protection against crushing as I could expect
- flip cover or something similar that can securely cover the screen
- potentially still able to use the camera
Don't wants:
- flimsy or magnet closing mechanism
- not bothered about waking the screen on opening
- slots for credit cards
Does anything like this exist?
I never take my phone with me on the bike, mountain or road. I don't crash often but when I do...
I do take my old galaxy nexus with me though, use it for Strava and access to 911 (no SIM). I keep it in a neoprene sleeve just in case. and that's a 4 year old phone
edit: if I were to take my N6 along, I'd opt for a thick neoprene sleeve. also, my current leather flip case is from tetded.com. no credit card slots and the flip cover has a little friction tab that keeps it closed. maybe not quite crash proof but it is a nice case.

Cool, cheers. Thats a start.
I thought about the neoprene sleeve. I could maybe fit my ringke in there too. The concern there was that i have 2 pieces (phone and cover) that I could easily drop in a puddle...
Hello rootSU, I am looking for this kind of bag/sleeve/pouch thingy.
I was looking for a horizontal keep-safe-pouch, like it was the original ASUS nexus 7 accessory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEqJErYwIoM
So my options are limited to a pouch only for carrying that should have an insert hole on the side of the device. I do not want to use my phone with any kind of rugged/rubber/plastic protection that actually impairs the feeling the actual phone surface gives.
So far had zero luck.
The closest hits were:
PDAir Leather Wallet Pouch for Motorola Google Nexus 6 XT1103 (Black/Red Stitch)
Artwizz Universal Wallet Case für Smartphone, schwarz
The problem is that I do not need this wallet pockets at all.
If you find anything keep us posted please.

Are you sure you can dial 911 without SIM, please double check that. Law here say the phone without SIM should not be able to dial emergency services. This was due to high percentage of false reports and makes sense when you think about it.
You can have any SIM, even deactivated one to call 911, or in our case also 112.

I never actually tested it. when it boots up there is a little message saying there's no SIM and it can only be used for emergency calls. how would I test it without actually calling 911? I will put my old deactivated SIM card in just in case, thanks

@rootSU
here's a couple ideas, not exactly what your looking for but may be of interest...
I have this neoprene case, you can put a TPU style case or a flip case on the N6 and it will still fit in here with a little room to spare, you could even add a piece of hard plastic on the inside for added screen protection (the hard plastic dividers they make for paper binders works great):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NZ2GB4E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
this is another case I have, same idea as above but it's a pretty snug fit with my flip case on:

You can try dialing 911 without a SIM. I am 99% sure it won't work, so you have almost nothing to feel scared about. You can let it ring once and hang up if you achieve a connection.
The message emergency calls appears every time, with or without SIM, but here in EU it does not work, I have tried it

Actually I did and if u go to the beginning which I will underline for u. This case protects from falls, and its just about similar to the uag case but without the back. I dropped by device a few times with this case on and no damage to the device. I even had the phone in my back pocket with case on it and landed on it when falling with no issues. No need to be rude. I own the bumper too, it's actually the least protective one I own. It has an open back and almost no front lip. Almost every case for this device covers more of the device. The title of the thread is" rugged flip case'. A bumper is not a case and certainly not a rugged case. It obviously doesn't have a front flap either. He specifically requested a case with a hard back, the bumper has no back. That's why it seemed like you were trolling to me, because it seems to be the exact opposite of the op. My bad I guess.

Anyway, I'm a case freak and I have found nothing like this, I want the same thing. I'm pretty sure I've looked at every case on amazon, amazon Japan, and alibaba. Plus the obvious places like casefanatic, etc.
I think your best bet is a dual layer case with a built in screen protector and an armband so it doesn't fall.

Gumdrop Hideaway with Stand - Ruggedized Case - Review

I read a lot of reviews about this case , but not a single review that pointed out a serious problem with this case.
after being so disappointed with it, I also reviews it on amazon .
This was a waste of money !!!
I bought this case cover so I'll have some peace of mind, not fearing that my tablet would fall and break .
I put it over the tablet and it looked great , it felt like it would defiantly keep my note pro 12.2 safe .
BUT, I started noticing that the screen became less responsive to the touch , AND also the pen started to put out some deformed lines.
Around the middle of the screen, strait lines that i drew with the pen became curved , i tried to draw a box and could not get the line strait until i moved the canvas to the side of the screen.
After reading what other reviewers said , I guessed this was something to do with the plastic screen protector part of the case.
So i removed the plastic cover, the screen became more responsive to the touch as before, BUT!!! it changed nothing for the stylus accuracy.
I started putting lines all over my screen and i found out a 1\4inch dead-spot around the home button , the pen could not draw in that area , it just carved around it. This curvature was going through to some extent all the way to the middle of the screen , and was the reason for the strait lines becoming curved .
I thought that maybe it was something with the home button.
IT was Not!
The problem was the strong magnet at the back of the case, the same magnet that holds the hide-away stand in place.
as soon as i completely removed the cover , things went back to normal , and i could draw strait lines once again.
I don't know if having a constant magnetic field could permanently harm my wacom digitizer in the screen.
But since i bought the tablet for art making , it was useless if it don't have good pen accuracy.
If you Buy this Cover for the note, and plan to use it with the s-pen, then forget about it !
AM I THE ONLY ONE WHICH THIS CASE THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM????
No, you're not. Most cases have this problem. In fact I was quite surprised to find that the Samsonite flipcover I bought recently didn't interfere with the Wacom sensors.
The magnetic field doesn't harm the Wacom digitizer. The problem is just that the Wacom digitizer also uses magnetics, and two magnets don't exactly work very well together.
There is no material that can block magnetic fields, so you can't solve it with a simple strip of fabric. (Although a strip of velvet or leather tends to help somewhat) You can try to cut out the magnet.
Something to know: There are two versions of magnetic systems in covers:
> The cheap, generic solution. Which is a single, relatively strong, magnet This causes problems with Wacom digitizers. It also causes problems with the tablets shutting off on their own for no reason.
> The more high-end brands use a different system, of a long magnetic strip or line. The overall magnetic strength is identical, but it is spread out enough so as to not interfere with the digitizers and sensors. My Samsonite apparently has this. (I emailed them.)

The problem was the strong magnet at the back of the case, the same magnet that holds the hide-away stand in place.

Actually, I asked an Amazon Q&A question about it and everyone who answered were too dumb to notice the magnet affecting the pen input. After I provided instructions to prove the problem exists, the price dropped from about $60 to $30. Man I don't get people. I am 100% sure everyone's Gumdrop has this issue, yet people are oblivious about it. Either they don't use the pen or they don't bother actually checking for the problem.
The question I asked:

After returning the Gumdrop, I bought an Otterbox and I am satisfied.

The last answer you received is:
"Not sure what issues your referenceing but we have been using this case for 3 months now with no issues at all, not even with the stylist."
Ronica Gomez
Me to never has a stylist for my tablet.
very strange what ppl where saying .
I guess most of them use the stylus as a finger replacement rather then a drawing tool.
