After six days with my new 920, I have decided to return it and get a HOX+.
Up until yesterday, I had been drifting towards getting rid of it. WP8 simply lacks a lot of basic functionality that I expect a handheld to have. Most of it is small stuff, any one thing I could live with. It really all boils down to a massive lack of customization, and no cross-access to apps. For instance, I can't call from the messaging app, I can't tweak the mixer from the music app, I can't get driving directions from the calendar, etc.. The phone does not display word document very well, the Word app is appallingly slow and has no scroll bar. Text wrapping is similar to iPhone (mostly non-existent). Any one of these (or two) I could live with, though they make me unhappy.
The final straw is battery life and the keyboard. I wrote a two paragraph email with it yesterday, and it was a painful experience. The landscape keyboard is absolutely horrible. The autocorrect is very slow, and often does not correct words. After two hours of writing emails and using the internet, then some light texting during the day, the phone died before 8:00pm. Yes, I have already deep cycled the battery because I noticed poor battery right away.
To any of you coming from Android or Blackberry that use the phone for more than very basic texting, checking email, and very limited calendar, I suggest not making the switch.
peace out
Ive often wondered why people announce they are leaving a device. What do you expect us to say....lol
I don't understand the people that prefer the HOX keyboard. That was my previous daily driver and you couldn't pay me enough to go back... It's just so unintuitive

I would expect it's more information for people deciding on whether they want to move to the 920 from Android. Can't complain about having too much information.

Well, I think the point is that if you don't like the HOX keyboard there are plenty of other choices on Android (Swype/Swiftkey etc.).
i am gonna buy a new phone soon....i finally decided to go for either ATIV S or Lumia 920??? by this post i guess i have only one option left...is it actually that horrible??

I don't think this is a complaint about the 920 per se. I think these are WinPhone 8 issues he is talking about and will be present with either the ATIV S or the 920.
BTW, the 920 is a great piece of hardware. I'm not sure of the OS, however, as there are many quirks to it. I'm going to try it for a week and see if it works for me. If not, I'll go back to my Motorola RAZR HD and Android.

See-Ya, but I mostly disagree.
And Android or Blackberry or Apple people not stuck to 1 type of device, consider more facts and possibilities before listening.
My battery life has been awesome, pretty much on par with my Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note N7000. The device functions so much smoother though. Will it make it days on 1 charge? Nope, neither would any smartphone I have EVER owned. I charge my smartphones nightly. But it makes it through a day just fine, yesterday I pulled it off the wireless charger when I woke up at 5:30am, when I went to go to bed last night at 11pm I was still at 58%. I sent tons of texts, took some pictures, had an hour long phone call with my brother, etc...
If all you care about is customization or apps, then yes I whole-heartedly agree WP8 is not for you.
The WP8 market has MOST of the apps I care about, and it has just enough customization to make it a very pleasant user experience, it is not however a great hours on hours of endless entertainment device. What it is instead is an amazing PHONE, with great assistance from apps like Weather Channel, Facebook, ESPN Fantasy Football, ESPN, Skype, Slacker Radio, etc...
All in all I find WP8 to be a great compromise between the iPhone and an Android device. It is SUPER smooth, with some of the apps, and some of the customization (just some, not nearly as much of either). There are little things here or there that would be nice
However I can point the same flaws at both iOS and Android. Android has uber customization, but a serious lack of any quality applications (yes there are some, but not many. Games for example, there are about 3-4 good ones, maybe).
iOS has TONS of awesome and quality applications and games, but pretty much 0 customization.
That's interesting, I haven't had any of those problems... shrugs, oh well... to each his own, but word works wonders for me, I have written long emails without a hitch.. (portrait mode gives me more than enough space on the 920), I can call someone I'm texting by tapping their name, and if I want to jump into a recent app I just hold the back button, doing everything on this phone is amazingly simple, I've never experience lag and I regularly get more than 24 hrs from the battery.. and in response to no customization, I have seen at least 20-30 different start screens and ALL of them have been totally different from the others... Sorry you didn't have a better experience, good riddance!!
Coming from Android, the three things I find weak with this OS are:
1. Notifications
2. Keyboard (the fact that you can't get a Swype style one)
3. Calendar (I cannot sync multiple calendars from one Google account - it only syncs the default).
I figure I can't do anything about #1 until MS adds it and for #2, I'll just need to get used to it.
Do you have any suggestions for an alternate calendar app that would sync multiple calendars from my Google account?

Eh, when I have android I feel like the user needs to be smart for the phone to do anything. When I have WP7 I feel like I have a smart phone.

From the messaging app just click on the persons name and it will take you to a list to call, text, email, etc.
Office has been nothing but awesome for me so. Also to help your battery you should block Nokia Drive+ beta from running as a background task. After doing this the phone will last much longer battery wise.
The WP keyboard is not like andriod or iOS it will not simply replace words with suggestions, you have to hit the correction from the jump list. In my opinion this is the best way because it stops you from typing accidental things to important people like co workers or your boss.

1. if you click the name of the person in the text app, it will open the card and allow you to call them.
2. if addresses are formatted correctly clicking on them will open the map and allow you to navigate
keyboard is personal preference. personally i find wp's keyboard to be the best out there, the standard HTC keyboard is a pile of ****, however the stock android keyboard on 4.x and above is pretty decent.
i get 10-12 hours of battery pretty consistently, i have read that google accounts could be the culprit as sometimes they get stuck constantly syncing for some reason. a reset fixes the issue for now.
Screen on time is terrible with this thing. Camera also isn't as great as they said they would be. Just like the 900 was supposed to be an "amazing camera". Fool me once... Etc etc.

Well I'm a fan of smartphones in general. Love to screw up Android phones, iPhones and Windows phones. In that respect, no complaints about any of them
Thing I like about the Windows Phone is it's interface. Very well designed. I notice that in general I get my things done just a tad easier and with a little less hassle. Also like the way you can customize the home screen. Not a desktop that get cluttered, no matter how well you organize things, but a set of tiles that keep the home screen clean and pleasant to look at. No matter how many tiles you throw at the home screen, it stays clean and usable. Consistency of the apps is also great.
I so wanted to buy the 920, but disappointed by the shenanigans, and bad timing around this phone decided to buy something else.
I loved the simplicity of my wife's 800, but one of the things that really bugged me which I hoped would be solved in the 920 was the lack of word wrap. Seems small I know but it's a detail that without it can irritate me to distraction and spoil the overall experience.
I'm relieved I didn't go with the 920 but will be watching to see if these irritations can be ironed out in the future.

To the lucky ones! What is it like?
Whats the OS like? Better than iPhone/Android?
Its pretty good. The quality of the GUI is brilliant. It seems a little buggy with the marketplace. Before adding any exchange or Gmail accounts it was really snappy. Since adding the accounts it seems to have lost this edge (android was just like this too).
I've also got a Desire and they are almost identical in size and layout. I prefer android and its widgets though winpho isn't without its charm. I liken the experience to when I got a HTC Magic... not too many decent apps and only a few firmware updates and apps from being brilliant.
Apple UI and app store still make the platform impressive.... not really enough for me to hang onto my iPhone 4 for more than a couple of weeks.
There are some things to really like. Especially, the HTC hub from what I have seen so far. However, bugs are everywhere. Get errors when trying to install apps, says licences are not valid, or other errors and you just keep hitting retry until they install.
My computer wouldnt recognise it at first when I connected it to usb. It said unknown usb device. The driver install failed, then followed some windows updates for windows phone, a reboot, then it recognised it as a HTC and eventually as a windows phone. C'mon MS get the basics right.
I expect to like the phone eventually, but tomorrow I will still be using my HD2 with either WM6.5 or Android. Android just works and works well...
A disappointing start, but hopefully, it will come together soon!
thanks for the replies guys.
i am torn between this and omnia 7. am leaning towards the omnia 7 for the better specs! I cant wait to get one though. I sold my iPhone 4 to get one of these!
I'm using the mozart and am quite impressed. Although dont really l like the blocks without a nice background.
Keyboard is uber snappy though! :0)
I've had a few high end Samsungs and support, ie firmware updates etc have always been rubbish, whereas HTC are always pretty great.
Just my 2 cents.

Yepp, that´s the reason I won´t buy any Samsung product anymore. Firmware updates are crappy, the build quality of the hardware has become crappy, too.
Oh, and KIES? I think WP7 users will be happy not to be forced to use that impossible piece of software. KIES is an absolute no-go, killed the Galaxy S for me, next to the extremely cheap plastic feeling.
I´ll stick to HTC, either this one (Mozart) or HD7. But I´ll wait for a couple of months to see how the overall development looks like. And I still believe there is a slight chance that there will be a WP7 port for my HD2...
wow
I have had a number of phones over the last 3 years from HTC HD and HD2, but this Mozart is seriously quick. Bootup time is quick, the UI is lightning fast and good for big fingers which anoyed me with 6.5 and Android.
Keyboard is the best ive used so far, and ive only started to learn its capabilities.
I had it connected to my work Exchange and Live accounts in a few mins, and it hasn't slowed one bit yet.
More updates as i get more time to play.

It would be pretty bad ass if some of the XDA devs found a way to replace the black background with wallpapers!
Also, I wish the Mozart worked for T-Mo USA.
Talk about basics.... Try connecting to a WiFi network which has ssid broadcast disabled. I dare you to.... You can't. WTF!
Or try and find the mac address for the phone.
And another thing.... What's the point of being able to select a word in the browser when you can't copy and paste...nor does a co text menu able if you tap and hold the selection.
And for the encore... 373Mb downloaded over 3g in about 12 hours...most of which I was asleep! On my desire after a month of exchange and Gmail, downloading apps over 3g all the time I barely use 300mb. Interesting when every app I tried to install failed???
Bah. I really wanted AMOLED but the sammy is butt ugly in person and its huge...the mozart has a way nicer form factor. Dunno what I want now D=

Hmm, the Zune had the same issue connecting to hidden SSID's and adhoc wifi (main reason I never got one), so this gives me cause for concern really.
Forgive My Brevity. To Be Or Not To Be...
Really undecided now
Kinda relates to this thread but not from a user perspective.
I was really looking at getting this device over the Desire.
Now with some research I'm seeing some stuff that really has me leaning back to the Desire.
Batt life seems to be short (anyone remember the first release of the Diamonds)
No copy & paste out of the box... What the f...?
Most of this I'm hoping will be fixed with updates but when will that happen and how soon will the carriers pass them on???
Update: Yes trinest it is.. Its a base function in a business used device and very applish of them to leave it out.

Honestly, there is no reason for the Wifi chip to drain that much battery if you're not connected to a network. It might be polling too much on the background and burning through battery life.
I've had iPhones and an android phone for a few months and both of them had a longer lasting battery even with Wifi on all day and syncing stuff constantly so it is pretty obvious that Microsoft needs to work on power management in WP7.
I'm using an HTC Trophy and battery laster 13 hours yesterday even after spending most of the day in a 2G-only town. It's not horrible, but could be better.
I've had mine since Saturday and absolutely love it. Killer features for me are the Sharepoint, Exchange and Zune integration. In fact the latter is so good I'll be retiring my iPod and ponying up for a Zune pass when the trial runs out.
Downsides so far have been bloody Orange having two phone masts down in London till the 29th Oct which has made 3g patchy as hell and Twitter occasionally crashing the whole device, and the lack of backgrounding updates in apps. The first is clearly just one of those things (I work in tech support....), and I really hope the latter will be sorted in the next OS update.
I've had/have at various points Windows Mobile 5- 6.5.5 devices, Android 1.5- 2.2 ones and an iPod Touch and can honestly say that WP7 is the most pleasurable to use OS of them all. I'll be keeping my HD2 around for gaming and comics, but my daily phone is totally going to be the HTC Mozart.
Battery life I've had no issue with- seems easily on a par with what I expect from a smartphone.

I have an iPhone 4, and it doesn't last through the day if I leave Wi-Fi on accidentally in the morning and move around town during the day a lot. It is never connected but encounters lots of hotspots in the meanwhile. I guess that drains the battery.

as it relates to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1014003, i'm now asking the opposite. which features/apps/overall experiences do you like about sense?
i didn't wanna take the other thread too off topic and debate why one specific app sucks and start to argue over it. i'd like purely positive feedback about which aspects of sense you like directly vs any other UI you've used (blur, touchwiz, vanilla, etc)
i'm not doing any research for any particular company or anything like that, just my personal curiosity.
Well lets start off with where I came from. My first Android phone was the Droid 2. I don't know if anyone has seen but the Droid 2 has a rediculous Motoblur UI. The one thing I noticed right off the bat was how "Laggy" it was. The first chance I had I rooted it and installed the first ROM I could that stripped all the Motoblur and the phone ran much, much better. Not to mention that most of the blur crap was completely useless (Yes cause I need a widget that lets me post to facebook, wait theres an app for that? <.<).
Ok so you know my feelings on Motoblur so first chance I had I jumped ship to an HTC phone which was luckily the Thunderbolt. The second I booted the phone I saw all the sense stuff and I was like oh here we go again, but I decided I would try it out for a bit. And well, suprisingly, I loved it! The sense widgets are actually useful (Calender, Music, FM radio) and the phone runs extremely smooth with the sense. I actually took my time and waited for a good rooting method since other than the bloatware the phone was basically perfect.
Okay well I know that wasn't what you were asking but I have been dieing to get that off my chest ever since I bought this phone. So now to the things I like.
Notification bar looks pretty good.
Messaging and phone apps are pretty decent.
You can change themes (Somewhat) by just switching skins which is built into the phone.
Lock screen has plenty of use.
It runs smooth as butter, no real modifications needed.
Thats all I can think of for now but on the contrary there is no real reason I have for leaving Sense, I use Das BAMF which adds the features I want with sense integrated. I think its perfect.... For me.
I've always liked sense, even when I was on Windows Mobile.
It runs smooth, its well polished, has pretty decent support from HTC. I think the interface is one of the best, and can be customized to my taste pretty nicely.
I've used other launchers, SPB Shell, etc. But I always come back to Sense
1. Sense calendar app is much better than touchwiz. You can actually click a phone number in a conference call meeting request and have the phone dial.
2. The exchange integration is also quite a bit better. Meeting requests show full details and give you a heads up if you are already booked for a given time slot.
3. Flip for speaker phone and ringer silence is pretty awesome.
4. Scenes/skins are okay, i don't use them too much, but it's nice to be able to ditch all the work related widgets/apps on the weekends.
5. I personally like recent apps in the notification shade, but i know some people hate it.
6. Calendar/messaging/clock widgets are really nice, love the live weather.
7. auto increase of ringtone volume when the phone is in a pocket is pretty awesome.
8. lock screen message preview is cool as are the stock lock screen music controls
9. dark notification bar (hate the old school ASOP)
Hi, I switched to At&t and the Htc Titan yesterday due to messing my Sprint Evo3d up. I noticed that windows can not do nearly as much as my Android did. Maybe its just me but I knew a whole bunch of stuff that the evo 3d did, now i can't even Skype and text at the same time without being logged out (I Skype like 14 hours a day with my fiance when I'm gone) I'm debating on just fixing my evo because this phone seems to limited. Can anyone tell me anything cool about this phone? Or should i go back and get the Atrix? I do like the fact this has a pretty awesome keyboard and pretty big screen. And I'm like in the middle of knowing technology stuff (I know the basics and a bit more but am by far not a master, especially on windows lol.) I want to give this phone a chance but I'm disappointed with the market and having to watch like everything through Zune.

Well first of all, I am going to tell you only a few things here. Other Titan owners can give you the low down on some more things later.
Skype works differently on WP than on Android and iphone. Here is an article why...if you don't understand the article...I will explain it further.
http://www.wpcentral.com/understanding-skype’s-limitations-windows-phone
As for the Titan, personally I like it compared to my previous phones running Android and .. the iphone.
The user interface is much more smoother IMO than the latest and greatest Android phone plus I definitely think the iphone has a dull user interface going on there.
Apps are mostly what everyone complains about when they switch over to WP. However, there are many MANY apps that are third - party that will do the same exact thing as a well-known app on Android/Iphone. For example, (Pandora Radio (no official app on WP) however, we have MetroRadio/WPFandora/RadioControlled that will do the same exact thing. Words With Friends (lol, most people complain about this the most) ...we have Words By Post that will work on Android/Iphone/and WP)
OS Updates/Manufacture Updates-As you know, you are on the most horrid cell phone carrier on the planet when it comes to these. However, I do expect us to receive updates fairly shortly to the latest firmware/and operating system soon. I don't really know if we will get WP8 or not. I don't think Microsoft really knows just yet. -And I cannot give you an expected release date, as ATT does not have a release date yet. But if you wanted to you could push the latest OS yourself manually from your computer. (I am low on time, but if you wanted a link, I could post a link on where/how to do this later).
I will post more later...possibly...
I will disagree verizon was the worst i have used i have at&t and have no complaints

Yes, Zune is a bit limited; but the phone works great. I understand that if you had in-depth knowledge of Android you'd like to keep in it; but this OS works great with a lot less hardware; for example HTC one has four cores, to run ICS in a good way, WP are single core only, and they work very smoothly.
I think you should see the videos from one of the replies.

Morning all,
Ok so I came from sprint and tried the Evo 4G LTE. I had two of them and they were flawed devices. Wi Fi issues, reboots etc. When I tried to exchange my second flawed device sprint gave me the run around and I drove all over town trying to get the device exchanged. No luck, got pissed and so here I am with the Razr Maxx on Verizon.
I used to be on Verizon and very much disliked all the little fees and constant price hikes. I also am a bit worried about data caps as I have never monitored that. Sprint while unlimited everything their network sucks and seems to get worse. Also they are releasing 4G devices without net work support. Kinda dumb and doesn't inspire much confidence in the future of that company.
Here is where my questions are.
On my old original Evo 4g the development was fantastic. MikG 3.11 rom was wonderful and made the device feel on par with the Maxx as far as speed and smoothness. The features outweighed this device as well. It just was so easy to use and fun to play with.
One great feature I am missed badly is the ability to skip tracks with the volume rocker while the screen is off with just about any music app. Stock, Power Amp, Google Music and Slacker all worked. Dial a station or shuffle all. Plug the cord in and drive. Skip songs without ever looking at the device. I love that. Has or will that feature arrive to the Maxx?
The pull down notification quick settings I am missing as well.
Also for the life of me can't figure out a way to group contacts on the Maxx's contacts app. I have to get on my computer to group in my gmail contacts.
There are many other features but like I said I am not too familiar with the development of the Maxx yet. Seems like not much is going on. Are developers waiting on ICS before getting into it? Seems reasonable to me.
I have until next Saturday to decide weather to stay on the Maxx and Verizon or go back to what I know. I really wish US cell carriers where more driven to give people what they want rather than extract as much as they can. I feel like I am in a very small town with only a few ladies to choose from. Each has a nice quality but they also have either smell bad, missing a limb, can't hold a conversation or whatever. It's like settling but not really happy.
Also my wife hates the Maxx. I would have to suggest maybe the Rezound for her. She misses the Evo already. I think the Maxx just seems to industrial to her.
Any way any thoughts anyone might have would be certainly appreciated. It is a commitment after all.
Ok now this bothers me a bit.
I suggest you to keep the Maxx. Great battery life and as far as i know there are no hardware/software issues. The ICS update will make it even smoother and faster, we can already see the difference from the ICS leaks.
About your questions:
On stock rom you can only get lockscreen controls, you can't skip tracks using the volume buttons. But if you flash a custom one like AOKP you get this feature among with many other customisations.
For pull down notification settings you can install "Widgetsoid2.x" from Google Play, you have the option to show the widget toggles on notification dropdown menu.
To group contacts you have to open "People" from the app-drawer and then tap on "groups".
Hope these help
I have the Amaze 4g, and am on the last stock ROM. I'm rooted and such, but was wondering if there are any custom ROM's worth swapping to.
I'm looking for full (or essentially full) functionality, and compatibility with google apps.
Better battery life.
Possibly better control over the notifications without having to use LightFlow (a fine app, but a bit of a battery eater).
It doesn't have to do anything particularly fancy, as I mostly use it as a phone, calendar, text, gvoice, email device, and don't care too much about fancy customizing and such, though it would be nice to have the calendar (I use business calendar), emails, texts, and missed calls on the lock screen, as well as a faster way to clear the notifications once I turn on the screen.
Anyways, there you have it. I use my nexus 7 2013 for most of my other stuff, so the primary thing I'm looking for is solid day to day performance, good notifications, and battery life.
Thanks very much!
Best ROM.

Since it's sort of taboo for anyone here to recommends ROM's, you would well to look at the developer's forum, and the first post in each thread usually has the working/not working info.
Also, googling the web will return some good articles.
I currently am running through a bunch of ROM's myself, as stability and fully-functioning camera are essential for me. In my trials--yes, at least 10 ROM's in a week--It turns out that just about any later ICS--above 4.0--and newer JB or KK doesn't have a fully functioning camera--may be mostly functioning, but not exactly fully functioning--unless it's STOCK-based. I'm staying away from stock based if I can help it, as the ROM's are sort of busier than I would like, and would rather avoid the T-Mo upsell hotspot.
I've learned that the most recent CM11 KK rom is just about stunning, but can't use it because of my camera requirement. Some ROM's have T-Mo upsell hotspots, and some do not. I think the earliest ICS ROM's have good cameras for the most part--and some of the later JB will work if the camera doesn't have to be "perfect." Alas, I need my camera perfect, and currently have been using Energy ICS 4.0.3 as my sort of nandroid back-up base to return to in between other testings.
Thanks very much for the detailed response.
It's true, a lot of people get touchy about such subjects, it's just been so long since I've done the whole Rom swapping scene, that i had no idea where to even start. I looked through a few, but I'm away of doing what you're doing now, without a basic general approach. So many Roms are about being the newest, or the most innovative, that sometimes it's hard to sort out the ones that just plain add simple performance boosts without sacrificing other things.
I will definitely give energy a shot, and stick with that if everything seems in order on my end.
Cheers.

While several other ROM's would do for a perfectly functioning camera, the max manual ISO listed in settings was 800--the Energy I'm using gave 1250. Probably it matters not a hoot really, however that made for my decision.

Yeah, that's probably an unusable iso for a camera phone. I rarely even used settings that high on my high end DSLR's, but it's always good to have a little extra headroom, just in case you're in a no-flash-allowed area. You can always do a little photoshopping later on and clean up the grit. Good enough for an online crop anyways.
I almost never use my phone or tablet cameras, but I definitely like to have them handy for a quick snap shot when needed. Now that high end point and shoots have wifi, wifi sd cards are pretty cheap now too, and are pocketable with quite good sensors, the phone only comes out for shooting if I forgot to have a camera with me (I have a dsc-rx100 ii, and an lx5, for pocket use).
I agree though, no camera on the phone would be a deal breaker for a ROM. You never know when you'll need it handy.
