[Q] Flashing not working - HTC Rezound

For some reason flashing boot files isnt working anymore (I'm S-ON). Below is the screenshot. The green progress bar quickly loads up when the file is flashed then nothing happens when i hit "power" on the highlighted 'bootloader' it just checks the SD card but never asks to update. I'm extracting the boot.img right from the ROM into my unlock tools folder, just as I've always done. This won't work on my AOSP ROM or on a Sense ROM. I've used a Sense ROM with Aroma installer and bootloader did ask to update, which I did but the kernel never took. Any ideas??

Sounds like its time to s-off..

Are you sure it didn't flash? Check your kernel version in the phone info.
I think what you're describing as not happening is for when you flash in hboot. I don't think you get that update question when you flash via fastboot. It's been a long time since I flashed a kernel so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Rereading your post, I'm not sure if you're saying you can't boot into the phone or if you're just expecting it to ask you to update. If it won't boot, make sure you don't have a ph98img file on your SD card. You can also use the reboot command on your pc but I can't remember what it is and my notes on that are on another computer.

[Q] flash twrp recovery?

TWRP only has the PG86IMG.zip. Simply download the file and make sure it is named PG86IMG.zip and place in on the root of your SD card.
http://www.tinyw.in/1MH - Here is the PG86IMG from the TWRP thread.
Download flashable zip from the OP and rename it "PG86IMG.zip" (without the quotes)
Place in the root of the sdcard
Power off phone (make sure you turn off hot boot or pull the battery when it's off)
Power on the phone holding power and volume down
Follow the prompts to flash it
Delete .zip (PG86IMG.zip) after booting
Enjoy

If someone really wanted to use fastboot to flash it, all they would have to do is pull the image out of the zip and use the appropriate fastboot command. I upgraded to 1.0.2 that way this morning with no issues.

The PG86IMG.zip method is rather quick and easy, as was already described. However, if you don't want to do it that way, there is an app made by Joeykrim that will flash the recovery for you. It's called flash image GUI. Check it out. I think it's available in the market, and here is his thread on it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192527&highlight=flash+GUI+app
So my question to this is. . .if I have Revolutionary on my phone, will I need to install others such as TWRP or ClockworkMod?
Isn't Revolutionary going to do the same thing that those were set to do? And if not. . .do I need more than one recovery tool on the SD card. . or the phone, shall I say???

Yes, you'll still need TWRP or Clockwork. I suggest TWRP. Revolutionary gave you S-off, which then made it possible to flash a custom recovery image (clockwork or twrp). When you have S-On, the system is write protected, so you're unable to flash a custom recovery image. Revolutionary gave you S-off, thus making the system read/write, so now you can flash the custom recovery image. The custom recovery image is going to allow you to flash unsigned files, such as roms, kernels, modifications, themes, etc etc. Just download the PG86IMG.zip file from the TWRP recovery thread, make sure that it's named exactly PG86IMG.zip, place the file on your SD card and then boot to bootloader. It'll ask you to update, say yes. Now you have a custom recovery image on your phone. The easiest way to boot into recovery is to download an app from the market called 'quickboot'. Use that app to boot into recovery, bootloader, reboot, or power down. Have fun.
I already have Clockwork. It's what I chose when I rooted the phone. I'm going to stick with that. I still have the ability to flash. However I am going to download the app that you recommended. Thanks much for the information. And I'm sorry because I actually meant Clockwork instead of Revolutionary. So as long as I have that, I don't need another recovery type. Correct?

Ahh, that makes more sense that you meant clockwork instead of revolutionary. haha. To answer your question, yes, you only need one or the other. If clockwork is the recovery you prefer, then you don't need TWRP for anything at all.
Would it ever make sense to use two or more at the same time?

unless we're talking about women, then no, definitely not
Only possible to use one recovery at a time. You can switch them if you'd like, but can't have more than one at the same time.

[Q] OTA Broke my Wifi

This OTA broke wifi.
I am unlocked, was rooted, but no longer.
all stock.
and now there is an "error" under the wifi toggle. it can't be turned on.
Anyone seen this?
If wifi was really broke from this update I'm sure there would be a real s$&tstorm brewing all over the intertubes. I would try the update again if you wanna stay stock otherwise try reroot and custom rom to see if wifi is back. Personally I only ran the updated version long enough to get the radio and quickly get back to ics..
You need to flash the kernel modules for the kernel you are using
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
Hey! I have that too... gonna try reflashing the kernel. Was on dsb before update but thought I'd stay stock to check battery life with it. Didn't reflash after restoring my nand.
EDIT: Reflashed stock kernel, wifi error. Flashed dsb, error on flashing the update, "mainver is older" which is exactly what I didn't want to have happen with the OTA.
trickster: When you say modules what do you mean?

Hey feralicious , how are you trying to flash the kernel ? It's my understanding if you flash in fastboot the mainver of the kernel shouldn't matter. It only has issues if you try to PH98img.zip flash it that the android.text.file needs to be changed in the zip to successfully flash.

The dsb is flashed in recovery, then goes to hboot to flash the update which is a PH98img.zip file.
I found where scrosler posted a kernel to flash that is for the OTA version and flashed that and I see that my kernel info changed a bit but still get an error for wifi.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21907238&postcount=18
So now I just tried 3 times to restore the nand I made immediately after I downloaded the OTA and I don't know what is going on but it says restored and then when I reboot it's not that stock version, it's already back to Ineffabilis. I realize all things point to operator error but I've been making nands all along and have gone back to them with no problem and this doesn't make any sense! Ugh. All this rooting stuff was going so smoothly until now. I made that specifically so I could go back to stock + OTA that I had on my phone.
I don't know if I can start all over now since I'm already updated with the mainver. Guess I can try to use con247's ROM + OTA but there are no instructions for that.
I guess I need to go to sleep. Maybe do a factory reset tomorrow and try starting from scratch.

Take the boot.img out of the Ph98 file and flash it manually in fastboot .
wipe data/factory in recovery then in amon ra go to developer menu boot to bootloader.. take the boot.img you removed and either place it in the same folder as fastboot or if you have set the path for adb so you can run it from anywhere . Open up a CMD , change directory to the folder with fastboot and type fastboot flash boot boot.img
This will flash the wifi module for you without encountering the mainver issue.
Well it seems that flashing scrosler's newer mainver boot.img should have fixed it. Right now I'm restoring a nand. I made them correctly but wasn't thinking straight about what they were, so I think I was restoring the last Ineffabilis from before grabbing the OTA. I'm now restoring the last one I made that should be stock OTA. Then I'll check wifi on that.
Was going to edit out the whole part about my nands from my previous post since I realized I wasn't remembering correctly but now you've gone and quoted it and spoiled my plan. Aha! I see the HTC boot animations so now I've got it back to stock OTA. Drum roll...
and wifi is working!
So the wifi error has to do with restoring a nand of the custom ROM. Tomorrow I'll try flashing the ROM fresh instead and see if wifi remains, unless someone knows that this will not make a difference.
Thanks.

I had this issue and it's from restoring a nand of a stock updated rom after I was in a mainver loop. What I did was go back to a stock gb nand I made and wifi was fine. I took the OTA again and rerooted. I'm good now. Do you have a stock gb nand handy??

Mine's all good now as far as WiFi as mentioned above. Just have to find out if I can use Innefabilis with the OTA. Thanks.
I did find out that I was not actually rooted after the OTA as I thought I was so that could be what caused it. Root explorer worked and superuser was in my apps so I assumed... But when I went to use Tibu just now it said I didn't have root, so that could be what went wrong for me. Now that I'm sure of root I'm going to try to restore my Innef. Nand and see if it still breaks WiFi.
Hey OP! Have you got your WiFi working?

CONFIRMED: Flashing/restoring Ineffabilis breaks wifi.
Wifi is fine with just the OTA but I get the error after restoring a nand with Ineffabilis or flashing it from scratch again.

Argh. The one in the first post of the Ineff thread, stock rooted? Yes. Someone posted in the Ineff thread that they have wifi as well.
I have a feeling it's because I didn't lock before updating?... but I read others saying it wasn't necessary. Starting over. Again.
Well I did everything over again using con247's method. This time I locked and unlocked. So now I'm ready to put Ineffabilis back on.
Hag77... did you restore a nand or reflash it from scratch? And was the kernel you flashed the stock rooted one in the first post of that thread? And did you flash before as well as after getting Ineff back or just after? What is the version/date of your kernel now? Thanks.

Download OTA rom, and remove the ph98file from it. Place the OTA rom file on the root of the SD card with the Ph98img file removed. Now , open the Ph98 file on desktop and just pull out the file boot.img ( looks like a silver disc with a white background) Place that file into your fastboot folder that you used to unlock your device with.
Reboot phone to recovery, wipe data/factory reset. Once wiped, install the OTA rom zip .. after that is done installing, go to the main menu of recovery again and select developer menu. In developer menu choose reboot to bootloader. Once in hboot, plug phone into the computer and select fastboot.
It should say fastbootusb highlighted if properly connected and in fastboot.
P.S. you don't extract it, just drag it out of the ph98 and drop it into your fastboot folder
Now, got to the folder with fastboot and the boot.img image and open up a command prompt ...Make sure the command prompt is showing the folder your in as the path .. then just type fastboot flash boot boot.img.. this will send the boot.img kernel image to your phone.
Once, that is done reboot and you should now have the OTA installed with the proper kernel.

I went straight back to my nand backup of ineff- then flashed kernel with fastboot.. I never ever ever flash kernels w/ ph file- not that it can't be done successfully I've just seen too many people run into problems doing it. Flashing kernels w/ fastboot is the only way I trust and it's supereasy (although requires pc).. So to sum up- my path was
relock- ruu to scott's posted ruu
skip all setup on ruu and go straight to the update
reboot into updated phone once
pull battery- hboot- install amonra
restore nand
flash kernel
success

Are you double clicking on it. Might have to download a program called 7zip. It is a free program that will let you unzip folders. I double click on the folder and I am able to open it up, but I do have 7zip installed so maybe thats why.
The thing is that I am pure stock, just rooted. I went to recovery and recovered to my original and only back up, everything works now, but I am afraid that the update will self push and break it again.

Well easiest way to prevent that would be to flash a custom recovery , then the update will fail. Guess , I didn't realize you could back up with the stock recovery never tried it .
Unless your saying you don't want to Unlock at all, then I am not sure because the update will get pushed to a stock rom with stock recovery. Don't think there is anything you can do except alter some files I suppose , but just as easy to accept the update

[Q] Lost and totally confused about S On 1.5

I did my research on how to install ROMS with a locked S On and Kernels, but just got even more confused about the process. I am coming from an Evo 4g CDMA.
I have H BOOT 1.5 unlocked S ON. My back up was lost. I tried to flash something like the newest MIUI using TWRP 1.1. w/e. I can't get past the boot screen for MIUI. As I was reading up on the forums, it seemed to me that you had to use a program called Flash Image GUI to get a kernel going on a ROM. Though, here is where I was confused. If a ROM has a kernel in it and I flash the ROM, does the Kernel part of that flash not get set up as well?
Would I need to flash the rom like normal from the SD Card then use something separate to flash a Kernel? If so, I am kinda boned. I can't get into the phone, just the recovery and can't get that program installed on the phone Trying to flash up Xplode now to see if maybe I just got a bad download.
If these questions were answered, please forgive me, I did try to find the answers, but as I read up more and more, it was getting to be more and more confusing to my personal issue at hand.
Thanks for the help!!
If you grab the kernel from your Miui zip, it's in the zips root called boot.img
Put that into your folder with your fastboot exe
Boot into bootloader the same as when you flashed the CWM
Use fastboot command... fastboot flash boot boot.img
this will flash the kernel and you should be able to boot up properly
Oh, well that is the problem. I had someone else flash TWRP for me. Guess I need to find out more on how to flash up that to get the kernel going. This S On thing is a massive PITA, lol. Guess once I get the phone up and going and I can use that program, things will be way easier

I see. i skipped the how to part since i thought you had alrady flashed the CMW your self, it's fairly easy.
you need..
1) to install the evo 3d usb drivers.. filename HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe .sorry i don't have a link, i got them off these forums somewhere
2) you need the fastboot.exe , again search google/these forums
then shut down your phone
pull battery out, then back in
hold down volume- (minus) and then hold the power button as well, only let go once in the bootloader, choose the fastboot option then insert usb cable to phone->pc .. you should see fastboot-usb message come up on your phone
then you can type out that fastboot command in the previous post from a dos command prompt, from the directory with your fastboot exe and boot.img
It's easier to put rom you want on the SD card make sure debug is on.
Adb reboot bootloader . Now
Fastboot boot recovery.img now wipe and flash rom you are good to go man. Works flawless .

What I did, which can help out other 3D noobs is this:
Since I just unlocked and have no back up, my kernel was still stock
Downloading a stock rom and moving it to my phone via comp, twrp recovery mode>> USB Toggle allows you to connect to PC! Put the rom on the main part of the SD card and just flash like normal.
Here you should be able to boot up like normal again.
Let me say, Flash Image GUI is a noobs friend till you can learn to use adb more.
I was told you can put a Rom on your card and just flash allowing the kernel to flash as well. I have not had success with this with HBoot 1.5 S On.
Flash Image GUI:
Download the rom you want, Aosp to Sense is fine.
Open Flash GUI and choose the Browse option.
Locate your rom on your card and choose it.
The app will give you a message saying the rom is big yada yada, say yes.
Wait a few moments as it finds the kernel. Once it does, choose flash Image.
Choose reboot recovery and flash the exact rom you picked with the App. Reboot and win.
This is just what I, a noob, have found to work.
I have NOT been able to just flash any rom on the SD Card and have it work. Flash Image UI has NOT been able to get Virus' Rom to load
A's I find more noob friendly tips I can report.
Thanks everyone else for the input! I won't lie, I came from an Evo 4g and am totally lazy as I am used to S Off and just flashing away. S On, I hate you. ADB, I fear you. Flash Image GUI, I want to marry you!
CDMA 3D, I wish we had more AOSP lol
Hope this helps out some people.

ADB is pretty simple to flash with lol
All you do is keep a copy of the recovery.img you are using in your adb folder...
You hold shift down right click on the folder that adb is in platform tools folder is where it's at say open cmd prompt to it. That is the fast painless method
Make sure you have a rom on your sd card.... Also that debug is turned on...
Plug phone in hook to computer...
ADB:
adb reboot bootloader
now:
fastboot boot recovery.img takes you into recovery...
Now wipe don't wipe SD card...
Flash rom your set works on virus roms and any other rom 0 issues
Also Flash GUI works for everyone nothing wrong with it....
I just prefer Good Old Adb to do my work If you need any help feel free to ask man.. I'll do what I can to help ya out if you get stuck..

You can not flash some ROMS through ADB/Fastboot with s-on, it just doesn't work no matter which way you go about it. Flashing a recovery is easy but that was not the OP's problem. The "noob" way that the OP suggested is the only way to get roms with custom boot.img in the zip to stick. I just installed CM9 and ADB/fastboot was of no use. Getting into recovery is easy but will not provide results unless you have used FlashImageGUI.apk first on a working ROM.
Nether CWM nor TWRP work to flash such ROM's with the right boot.img. You must use FlashImageGUI.apk!

Dah da dat ta ta! (Swoops in with my 2 cents)
See the Guide/Flashing Notes in my signature for a walkthru for flashing roms, recoveries, etc. All up to date. Choose your method: fastboot & recovery or flashimage & recovery.
Note: TWRP 2.0 with Dumlock is a workaround to avoid using fastboot (pc). FlashImage is not a requirement, its also a workaround vs fastboot.

Thanks erryone. I hope others were able to get some help here that are new to 3vo and flashing. I am so waiting for a nub proof s-off method.

There is the HBOOT downgrade. I have ZERO linux experience whatsoever and thought the process was very easy. I know it says to 'brick' the phone, but it is honestly not that scary. I have done two of these already both being successful on the first attempt. The live cd by closeone actually takes care of almost everything, except for actually doing the brick. Trust me being on 1.40 s-off is much much nicer.

if its a flashable zip, flash it from recovery.
if its a boot.img, fastboot it from bootloader
you can find softwares to do it too

with CWM or with fastboot app at PC (hh at fastboot mode) ..
"Install from ZIP" option (i.e. flash) using CWM.

Are kernels very difficult to find? I've searched a lot for kernel 2.6.38.8 and I just can't find the kernel in zip format after looking at a series of error 404 thinking that this kernel is out of date.

After flashing the success kernel my phone won't boot? I'm on 10/2.
You haven't specified which is your phone model, as some device's bootloader is locked and some not.
Installing kernel in Samsung devices (Unlocked bootloader) is pretty easy, you just have to flash the zip from CWM recovery. Or if you have got a boot.img make a flashable zip (There are many tutorials over here for that) and flash it.
Another option is, replace the boot.img of your Custom ROM zip file and flash.

Oh my.. I think you should go into the forum for your device.. go to the q&a section and read.. then read more and when your all done reading... read again! Because I'm thinking if you don't your going to end up with a paperweight.

This is the correct answer to every question asked in here so far!!!!
There is no "generic Android way" to do what you're asking for. It can change for every single phone. And if you flash the wrong thing, you may permanently destroy your phone! And if your phone has different variants, be sure to get the version specifically for your exact phone! For example, flashing something for the wrong Galaxy S3 can kill your device in an unrecoverable way because where the kernel goes for one variant is where the bootloader goes for another variant!
If you don't know exactly what you're doing, then don't do it and go learn more! Experiment first ONLY with step-by-step tutorials for your EXACT scenario! If something's different, don't do it!
yeah read into this a good bit more before you do this. look in your phones forums for a guide. you mess this up you phone becomes pretty useless.
I'm a little worried now, and a bit rushed this morning as I have a funeral to attend this morning.
Bottom line, my phone has a blank screen now. It gets past the boot animation, but goes blank after that. I cannot get into recovery or boot loader by pressing the power/vol down buttons. I have done a couple battery pulls, but of no help. When I connect it to my PC, it does not show up as a disk drive, though it did say installing drivers.
Google flashable kernals and put in android sdk folder then go to cmd andtype fastboot flash name of kernal.img. I 90% sure.
Remember to click thanks if I helped

This is the kernel I need for the rom I downloaded,
Team-Hydra / android_kernel_htc_msm8660. It is for the new rom CyanogenMod 10.1 - Android 4.2.1 - Jellybean.
So what is being said is that I need to put this on my sd card in the android sdk folder, the flash it through the command prompt. Is this correct so far?

You need to flash via fastboot like u said Android SDK Folder. Just need to flash the boot.img follow what ROM u flash.
Extract the Boot.img from the ROM.zip u flashed.
Put the Boot.img at SDK folder which is same with fastboot locate.
Boot ur phone to BOOTLOADER -> Fastboot, then using command promp fasboot flash boot boot.img, then reboot your phone..
Here is where I'm at with this.
After letting my phone sit all night without the battery in it, I still have the same problem. After the boot animation, the screen is black. I tried to connect the phone to the pc, but my computer does not see it. I also tried to use a card reader, but still my computer does not see the card either. The reader is working because I put another sd card in it and it saw it.
The thing is now, I can get into the bootloader and recovery, though I now seem to have Clockwork instead of 4ext, which is what I had before I started having problems. Clockwork sees the card as well.
I don't know how to get anything on the card now since I cannot connect to the pc, either through the phone or through a card reader.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have the HTC EVO V 3D. It's rooted and S-off.

[Q] I need major help please!!!

Last night I was able to unlock my bootloader on my rezound. And I installed Amon Ra recovery. I did a nand backup before I made any other choices from there. But I don't know if I was perm rooted. But I installed su and busybox. well I went ahead and installed Rom Manager just to start out with instead of using amon recovery.
Through rom manager I had to flash clockwork mod. did that. so I thought i was ready to go with flashing a ROM. well I downloaded a ROM through my phone. but it wasn't on my sd card. so i pulled the notifications down on my phone and just clicked the downloaded ROM and it said what would you like to do with it? I clicked the rom manager option. cleared dalvik and cache n all. Everything said installed successfully. well it just stayed on the htc screen FOREVER. so i pulled battery and tried to recover my backup. well now that i have clockwork as recovery. my backup isn't on my phone. I can't even use clockwork now. I can't get my phone to boot at all. I don't think my phone is bricked cuz I can get into the bootloader menu. But i can't get my phone to boot back up at all whatsoever
So I was either not rooted like I thought I was or something. I can't even factory reset through bootloader. it just takes me back to clockwork mod and everytime i click an option through cwm it goes blank. every single option. I need my amon recovery back somehow so i can restore my backup....please somebody help me out. I hope its not bricked. Thanks
You need to flash the boot.img from fast boot if you're not s-off

Your firmware is probably still GB, Newt's is for ICS. There is a patch allows you to use his ROM on a GB firmware base. So, over on MikMIk possibly, is this patch you need. Flash it in recovery, just like you would a ROM.
Here found a helpful link, look at PRDOG's post. He rocks... Depending on which release of Newt's ROM you are on, he also has a RLS 3.2.1 which is also a patch. Sorry it is a little confusing. But stick with it. Lots of people to help you. You don't need to flash the 3.2.1 patch, just the GB one.
