Hello guys,
First of all, I've trying researching myself, doing searches, trying different builds for 2 days before coming here to bother you. Please bear with me I'm really worried.
Ok so this is what I did (Now I know I made many stupid mistakes) All updates made using ODIN and Bootloader mode.
Had this GSM unlocked i9300 working on ICS 4.0.4. with no issues...
Baseband: I9300XXLEF
Kernel Version:
3.0.15-611327-user
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Tue May 22 21:54:17 KST
2012
Build number
IMM76D.I9300XXALEF
Sorry for the shaky pic.

then I wanted JB.
Installed CyanogenMod 10 right away (without installing a stock JB first... stupid, yes)... calls and Wifi worked, but no mobile data networks. Tried a lot of modems with no luck. I was able to select a mobile data provider but it failed to register. However calls worked at this point.
Then I tried a local operator stock rom (ICS) ... things went worse, I wasn't even able to search for mobile data providers and calls didn't work either.
Then I tried another ICS stock rom and exactly the same thing happened.
Things now look like this:
(I've changed the modem to match the original)
I'm pretty desperated at this point. I'm afraid I could've damaged my phone?
All I want now is going back to ICS stock and have my voice and data networking fixed. I think part of the problem is that I installed a ROM that is NOT for unlocked phones.
Please, please shed some light over here. I don't care about data or settings, I just want this NOT to become an expensive 3.8 wifi tablet.
Is your IMEI correct .
If not restore your EFS backup .
jje
The ROM that you've installed has nothing to do with your problem... And at the point that you're at it's no use to keep jumping from a ROM to another, just follow the procedure that JJEgan as described (about restoring the EFS backup) and you should be fine.
check ur emi. if its showing 0000 den u need to restore your efs backup. if u dont have den u r out of luck
Ok I'm afraid to say I Don't have a EFS Backup... but I can´t give up guys, there must be a way
All I did is installing different roms and modems... could this corrup my IMEI?
Update:
I have installed this ROM I9300XXDLJ2_I9300XEFDLJ2_XEF and now it seems there's a bit of hope for me:
Says registered to network when I tap on my operator, but still no calls or mobile data.
seem we have the same dilema. Has you IMEI changed to a different number?
No it hasn't. Did yours?
F&*^ yup unfortunately mine did
Also, keep in mind that before I switched the 2nd ROM calls were working but not mobile data. If I'm not mistaken, if the IMEI was the problem, I wouldn't have been able to make calls either.
Please don't give up on me guys.
PS. As you can see in the pictures above, now I'm able to search and list the available providers.
This might be the answer to our problems http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601 but the OP deleted the thread

Its written on the original box or under the battery
If its different then ur in trouble. EFS backup restore needed or back to Samsung repairs center..............
just press *#06# see if its the same on your original box
or take out your battery and check the sticker at back of your phone
No box here...
Went as far as trying to completely dissaemble the thing to see if I find the IMEI somewhere... no luck.
I'm reaching 21 hours non sleep... This is so frustrating.
Why on earth did u dismantle all the phone when we told u its under the battery?
If its not under the battery then its definitely on the box but if u got no box then i guess its hard luck my friend!
Thank you all for trying to help.
I've just found the solution of this, but I'm not sure whether it would be ok to publicly share it or not because it's the work of another person who I believe is asking for donations about it.
Head to zeromemory's link to find your answer.
Zeromemory, I'll PM the solution that worked for me, and I hope it works for you.
After 23 hours of being awake, I need to sleep. Once again, thank you guys.
I hope that thread reopens very soon so we can try that solution. For the meantime time to catch some ZZZZ's im on to another solution there i will post if that works.
Will wait for that solution too. Don't forget to share it.
It could be that your IMEI has changed. Check it by typing *#06# and check it with your box to see if it's the same one..

"Connection problem or invalid MMI code" when typing in most # codes into the dialer?
Hi, anyone else experienced this when typing in a code such as #*06# or whatever into the dialer? It is annoying, what is wrong with my handset?
First of all it says USSD running and then "Connection problem or invalid MMI code" ?
Types in no problem for me a factory reset wipes all data might be the answer ,

Thanks for the reply, and yeah I have already done that, factory reset it... Maybe it is to do with when I flashed it or something? Is there a way I can get it back to pretty much factory condition - in terms of flashing it, etc (I am a complete noob so have no idea). Thanks
Just got the same message when I tried to add a couple of contacts to speeddial. Will check it out later.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. At least someone else gets this with this same phone, not just me...
Okay, can you check that when you make a call does "conditional call forwarding active" come up? I have tried to disable that as it is annoying and even phone 3 mobile and they explained how to do it, yet still comes up. I have gone and reset my phone to factory settings yet it's still a probkem. I think the "Connection problem or invalid MMI code" and this must be linked, as I am sure I noticed both started at the same time?

Hi JJEgan, thanks for the advice. Is this fairly simple?
Is this the thread I want, and how do I do it (literally I only came on here in the first place because of the problem, I am in no way anywhere near a pro at these sorts of things)?

Cheers.
Has anyone found a fix for this? On my phone it didn't work in Stock, didn't work when I flashed it to KF3 and a factory reset doesn't help either.
finally found a fix for this. You must use the stock Phone dialer to type in the code!!!
I've been using GO Dialers to type in the code, that's why its not working!! I am on Litening ROM 1.4. I thought those codes only work on stock rom, stock everything but that is not the case here.
Have fun everyone
ok dont know if it will work for you but it worked for me
add comma (,) in the end of the code

I've looked around but can't find anyone who had/has working data on any of the 2.3 roms. So since data doesn't work on any of the 2.3 roms and mms requires data so.....yeah no mms on 2.3.
I have data up and running if I flash back to any of the 2.2 and under roms but it's broken when flashing 2.3. If you find a way to get data running please do post back as unfortunately I wasn't smart enough to figure it out.

You can but that requires you to do some gray area things that we can't talk about here. Or you could just have someone from metro pcs add the ESN to their system, more then a few people over at Howards forum do it for a nice cheap price.

Hey. I have the same problem, could you help me too? It keeps changing back to my10digit#@vzw3g.com
Please help me!
Ok so I just got a brand new Galaxy s2 FREE from Vodafone AU... well not exactly, after crap reception and a $500 bill direct debited from my account for excess data I never used, they gave it to me outright. Bribe 3 months before my contract expires I guess.
Firstly I'm NOT a NOOB been flashing for 18months on my old SGS1 and do know a bit.
-So I started with a stock GTi9100T phone...
NOTE: After much google action I discovered that the GTi9100T is IDENTICAL to the standard SGS2 as far as I can tell except that is has a lower SAR output. Unlike the i9100G there are NO T-specific hardware or firmware differences (except possibly the modem or trivial rom settings) and no separate sources either.
-Then I flashed a CF-rooted stock kernel (KF2 i think) matching the stock firmware via Odin.
-Next I downloaded Foxhound Batista 0.2 ICS XXLPH based rom and flashed via CWM recovery. I came in two parts and I must have missed the correct seequence because the rom bootlooped.
I decided to format every partition except sdcard and flash CF-root kernel via Odin again.
-This time Foxhound flashed sucessfully.
-Now I did forget to backup my IMEI (facepalm) easy to do when you have a FREE SGS2 in your hands. IMEI survived fine but the Serial number in setting> phone is "Unkown"
-Now my questions are:
-Does the serial number listed as unknown cause any phone-identity problems like a missing/corrupt IMEI?
-Can I fix this with .md5 backups in my EFS folder or any other way easily?
-Is it caused by still having GB bootloaders running ICS?
-will a sammy stock firmware flash (3-file low-level + pit/repartion) fix it like IMEI issues?
-Is is something to do with having GTi9100 rom running on a GTi9100T device?
Thanks in advance peoples, happy to join your area of XDA
Edit: So I finally found a discussion touching on this in the CM9 thread but it reveals very little:

You need new ics boot loader, ics stock ROM to fix that serial....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I've never used a custom rom that does show the serial number in settings, and I only used stock for a week when I first got my phone & don't remember if it showed up using stock.
Either way, it's irrelevant. What possible issue could arise whether settings/about phone showed your serial number or not ? As long as your IMEI is good/not showing the generic '0044' one, it's all good.
People getting in a tizz about nothing on here as per usual.
Custom kernels than might lose it again
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
It's the new ICS feature, it shows serial in about phone, and yes it does nothing, but it sure bug when you see unknown.... So update to latest stock and it will be fixed. Easy. As I said, custom kernels again can make it unknown.

and sorry for bad english
Sounds like you have at least one stolen phone. Good luck getting help with that.
i installed omega v14 and it change my imei i forget to back it up i didn't stole it
and the phone with changed imei i buy it at t-mobile netherlands shop
And the other phone?
Regardless, you won't find much help trying to spoof an IMEI.
to phone with the original imei i buy at typhone.nl with vodafone contract if u dont believe just dont i want to fix the no service issue
No you cannot transplant IMEI numbers since they are encrypted with (amongst others) the device/CPU ID which is unique and unchangeable for all devices. It would be illegal anyway, additionally since you will not be able to use both phones at the same time pointless.
Have it repaired by Samsung (depending on the location and serice center it should cost you some 60-ish $.
Then, wehn you get it back, do the damn EFS backup so you wont have that same issue again.
okay thanks i have one last question what do i say if samsung ask whats wrong with this phone
Hi, I think your problem is generic IMEI, you can recover your original IMEI by flashing it with stock ROM. Or try to find a repairing shop which have SPT box or Octopus box.

There are so many posts in this forum to recover corrupted IMEI. One simple method is try to flash it with original stock ROM or in efs folder, rename the 'nvdata.bin.bak' file to 'nvdata.bin' and replace the old one.
First go through the original posts and then try the above methods...
thanks i already trying instal stock rom but no luck

Um... I think the OP has some explaining to do - since late August s/he has been posting asking for help to fix IMEI in a number of threads - in fact that has been the ONLY topic/question for all the posts. Previously s/he was in Thailand and now it is 'live in Netherlands' - also one phone has a fake IMEI and the other doesn't yet both have been bought from vendors. One has to wonder why s/he wouldn't simply go back to the vendor and get the stuffed phone repaired? Apparently it IS working, (i.e. not hard-bricked) so it would seem all that is needed is to pay a service fee and 'Voila!' working S3.
Logically this leads to a thought about the legitimacy of the 2nd (and maybe both) phone(s) - 3 weeks of trying many threads to get someone to provide a new IMEI seems a little excessive.
Agree this and the multiple posts is getting very suspicious . Plus not the only post asking to borrow somebody's EFS folder .
jje
yup
Closed, you have already opened a thread on this, more than once, send it to samsung and they will fix it, seems you are beyond repaid at this point.

Status - device status. Should be "normal"
Device status says "modified" and serial number says 000000000000000000000000000.
Would you happen to know where can I get a stock kernel for this phone? As a matter of fact, how do I find out WHICH IS my stock kernel?
not kernel, you need a whole ROM. get one from sammobile
Really? Oh no....this means having to reconfigure my entire phone again
So I just type GT-i9300 on sammobile and download the rom? Or do I type the baseband, or what?

So, as long as it´s GT-i9300 I can download ANY rom? I´m downloading Android 4.1.2 I9300XXELL5_I9300VFGELL1_TCL.zip | 901.3 MB. Should this be ok?
you can choose your csc from the csc list in General
Ok. Then I guess the one I´m downloading won´t work for me as I´ve just checked and:
AP: i9300xxale8
cp: i9300bole5
csc: i9300tnlle3
you can change csc later, but that's not required
So the one i´m downloading should be fine then? Sorry for the question massacre but I don´t want to brick my phone.
you won't brick your phone, you may have some network issues, but that's unlikely. and if you do, just change the csc
