Hi guys,
I´ve just bought a second hand GS3 and I cannot update it. I thought it was because it was rooted but then I tried a temp unroot (rootkeeper) and it didn´t work. So I´m not so sure if my phone is fully stock. How can i find out?

Status - device status. Should be "normal"
Device status says "modified" and serial number says 000000000000000000000000000.
Would you happen to know where can I get a stock kernel for this phone? As a matter of fact, how do I find out WHICH IS my stock kernel?
not kernel, you need a whole ROM. get one from sammobile
Really? Oh no....this means having to reconfigure my entire phone again
So I just type GT-i9300 on sammobile and download the rom? Or do I type the baseband, or what?

flash latest i9300 stock rom
So, as long as it´s GT-i9300 I can download ANY rom? I´m downloading Android 4.1.2 I9300XXELL5_I9300VFGELL1_TCL.zip | 901.3 MB. Should this be ok?
you can choose your csc from the csc list in General
Ok. Then I guess the one I´m downloading won´t work for me as I´ve just checked and:
AP: i9300xxale8
cp: i9300bole5
csc: i9300tnlle3
you can change csc later, but that's not required
So the one i´m downloading should be fine then? Sorry for the question massacre but I don´t want to brick my phone.
you won't brick your phone, you may have some network issues, but that's unlikely. and if you do, just change the csc

just FYI, ELL5 is not the latest version. ELLA is
Thanks. I´ve just canceled the other download...I´ll have to wait 28min to be able to download ELLA. I´ll let you guys know latter.
I´ve flashed the ELLA rom and it worked perfectly. It didn´t delete my data or configuration. Everything is perfect but I´m having an issue.
Whenever I try to make a call it tells me I´m not registered on a network. I went to "Mobile Networks", "Network Operators" and selected my carrier but I keep getting the same msg whenever I try to make a call.

Ok so I just got a brand new Galaxy s2 FREE from Vodafone AU... well not exactly, after crap reception and a $500 bill direct debited from my account for excess data I never used, they gave it to me outright. Bribe 3 months before my contract expires I guess.
Firstly I'm NOT a NOOB been flashing for 18months on my old SGS1 and do know a bit.
-So I started with a stock GTi9100T phone...
NOTE: After much google action I discovered that the GTi9100T is IDENTICAL to the standard SGS2 as far as I can tell except that is has a lower SAR output. Unlike the i9100G there are NO T-specific hardware or firmware differences (except possibly the modem or trivial rom settings) and no separate sources either.
-Then I flashed a CF-rooted stock kernel (KF2 i think) matching the stock firmware via Odin.
-Next I downloaded Foxhound Batista 0.2 ICS XXLPH based rom and flashed via CWM recovery. I came in two parts and I must have missed the correct seequence because the rom bootlooped.
I decided to format every partition except sdcard and flash CF-root kernel via Odin again.
-This time Foxhound flashed sucessfully.
-Now I did forget to backup my IMEI (facepalm) easy to do when you have a FREE SGS2 in your hands. IMEI survived fine but the Serial number in setting> phone is "Unkown"
-Now my questions are:
-Does the serial number listed as unknown cause any phone-identity problems like a missing/corrupt IMEI?
-Can I fix this with .md5 backups in my EFS folder or any other way easily?
-Is it caused by still having GB bootloaders running ICS?
-will a sammy stock firmware flash (3-file low-level + pit/repartion) fix it like IMEI issues?
-Is is something to do with having GTi9100 rom running on a GTi9100T device?
Thanks in advance peoples, happy to join your area of XDA
Edit: So I finally found a discussion touching on this in the CM9 thread but it reveals very little:

Serial problem ???
jje
You need new ics boot loader, ics stock ROM to fix that serial....
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I've never used a custom rom that does show the serial number in settings, and I only used stock for a week when I first got my phone & don't remember if it showed up using stock.
Either way, it's irrelevant. What possible issue could arise whether settings/about phone showed your serial number or not ? As long as your IMEI is good/not showing the generic '0044' one, it's all good.
People getting in a tizz about nothing on here as per usual.
Custom kernels than might lose it again
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
It's the new ICS feature, it shows serial in about phone, and yes it does nothing, but it sure bug when you see unknown.... So update to latest stock and it will be fixed. Easy. As I said, custom kernels again can make it unknown.

Even I had the same issue as the OP and tried flashing the ICS bootloader using ODIN. But for some reason ODIN is not responding and my phone is still in download mode. The USB cable is still connected.
Is it safe to disconnect the USB cable or will it brick my phone?

I believe this happens if you are on 4.0.4 as it seems to be a reading error.
My problem is, I get very weird values on my serial number.
Hello guys,
First of all, I've trying researching myself, doing searches, trying different builds for 2 days before coming here to bother you. Please bear with me I'm really worried.
Ok so this is what I did (Now I know I made many stupid mistakes) All updates made using ODIN and Bootloader mode.
Had this GSM unlocked i9300 working on ICS 4.0.4. with no issues...
Baseband: I9300XXLEF
Kernel Version:
3.0.15-611327-user

then I wanted JB.
Installed CyanogenMod 10 right away (without installing a stock JB first... stupid, yes)... calls and Wifi worked, but no mobile data networks. Tried a lot of modems with no luck. I was able to select a mobile data provider but it failed to register. However calls worked at this point.
Then I tried a local operator stock rom (ICS) ... things went worse, I wasn't even able to search for mobile data providers and calls didn't work either.
Then I tried another ICS stock rom and exactly the same thing happened.
Things now look like this:
(I've changed the modem to match the original)
I'm pretty desperated at this point. I'm afraid I could've damaged my phone?
All I want now is going back to ICS stock and have my voice and data networking fixed. I think part of the problem is that I installed a ROM that is NOT for unlocked phones.
Please, please shed some light over here. I don't care about data or settings, I just want this NOT to become an expensive 3.8 wifi tablet.
Is your IMEI correct .
If not restore your EFS backup .
jje
The ROM that you've installed has nothing to do with your problem... And at the point that you're at it's no use to keep jumping from a ROM to another, just follow the procedure that JJEgan as described (about restoring the EFS backup) and you should be fine.
check ur emi. if its showing 0000 den u need to restore your efs backup. if u dont have den u r out of luck
Ok I'm afraid to say I Don't have a EFS Backup... but I can´t give up guys, there must be a way
All I did is installing different roms and modems... could this corrup my IMEI?
Update:
I have installed this ROM I9300XXDLJ2_I9300XEFDLJ2_XEF and now it seems there's a bit of hope for me:
Says registered to network when I tap on my operator, but still no calls or mobile data.
seem we have the same dilema. Has you IMEI changed to a different number?
No it hasn't. Did yours?
F&*^ yup unfortunately mine did
Also, keep in mind that before I switched the 2nd ROM calls were working but not mobile data. If I'm not mistaken, if the IMEI was the problem, I wouldn't have been able to make calls either.
Please don't give up on me guys.
PS. As you can see in the pictures above, now I'm able to search and list the available providers.
This might be the answer to our problems http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601 but the OP deleted the thread

Its written on the original box or under the battery
If its different then ur in trouble. EFS backup restore needed or back to Samsung repairs center..............
just press *#06# see if its the same on your original box
or take out your battery and check the sticker at back of your phone
No box here...
Went as far as trying to completely dissaemble the thing to see if I find the IMEI somewhere... no luck.
I'm reaching 21 hours non sleep... This is so frustrating.
Why on earth did u dismantle all the phone when we told u its under the battery?
If its not under the battery then its definitely on the box but if u got no box then i guess its hard luck my friend!
Thank you all for trying to help.
I've just found the solution of this, but I'm not sure whether it would be ok to publicly share it or not because it's the work of another person who I believe is asking for donations about it.
Head to zeromemory's link to find your answer.
Zeromemory, I'll PM the solution that worked for me, and I hope it works for you.
After 23 hours of being awake, I need to sleep. Once again, thank you guys.
I hope that thread reopens very soon so we can try that solution. For the meantime time to catch some ZZZZ's im on to another solution there i will post if that works.
Will wait for that solution too. Don't forget to share it.
It could be that your IMEI has changed. Check it by typing *#06# and check it with your box to see if it's the same one..

It's just a warning message, there is nothing problematic about it.
However, the solution would be to flash a stock kernel:

as of right now u cant knox has kicked in yo phone and left in other words a watermark that says kernel not seandriod enforcing. im pretty sure a dev will have a workaround on it.If you have to return your phone try to find a stock rooted rom and hit super su and hit setting and scroll all the way down and hit full unroot. it will unroot but the watermark will still be there.
Something isn't jiving here, you are in the Sprint forums and yet it looks like you are attempting to flash 9005 (not sprint) firmware. If you do have a Sprint phone, you need to be flashing 900P firmware.

From what I understand, if you manage to flash a stock fw without the system side of rmm while your bootloader is rmm=prenormal, the unlock countdown will never start and the rmm status won't change.

can you explain what you mean by "system side" ?
Anyone tried this?
Have an Australian SM-G965F.
Been checking Developer and Download: No option, and pre-normal.
Last two days I have:
Rebooted it, multiple times.
Changed sims.
Done 2x OTA updates from Samsung.
Added my Samsung account yesterday after reading it was required.
Just read a piece somewhere about winding date back.
My phone status was Flight mode, and no sim (was swapping sims), but I believe it had wifi, turned off auto time/date, wound the date back to the 2nd of July and checked Dev again, OEM unlock has appeared, rebooted and checked download mode and it is no longer pre-normal either.
Boot phone up again and recheck dev once more and the option is still there. Have rebooted multiple times since and it does not disappear again, Time is set back to auto, but no sim in just yet.
Not saying this is a solution for all, nor that you should try it if you have x days uptime but for some weird reason this worked on mine, and if you are sitting there with the timer at a full 7 days it might be worth a try.
---------- Post added at 08:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:33 AM ----------
Just to add a little to this, 2nd of July would be BEFORE my phones initial activation date if that matters at all.
