[Q] Questions after S-Off, where did I mess up? - HTC Rezound

Thanks in advance for any help. I know there are a ton of posts about issues like this, but it seems the more I read the more confused I get. Anyway, if someone can help clarify my situation that would be great.
I just got a Rezound after about 18 months with a Thunderbolt and the steps to root and s-off are obviously different. I rooted using the "Scottys noob friendly guide" and that went well. Next, I attempted to get S-off using Control Bear and the wire trick. After several attempts I got the wire trick timing correct, was no longer sober! Then here is where I think things got screwed up. The Control Bear program did not ask if I wanted to install a custom hboot it just sort of started running on its own. I let it do its thing, the phone rebooted into Hboot and it now reads:
***TAMPERED***
***LOCKED***
VIGOR PUT SHIP S-OFF RL
H-BOOT-2.25.000
RADIO-1.22.10.0421r/1.22.10.0424R
OpenDSP-v13.6.0.7611.00.0104
eMMC-boot
Apr 12 2012, 16:47:46
Long story short I do not believe that Control Bear successfully installed the custom hboot. I can no longer fastboot boot or flashboot flash a revovery image (recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm). I am able to boot into the stock ROM, I am still rooted, I am S-off, but without being able to flash/install a revovery image I cannot flash anything. I feel like I am stuck. I thought going S-off and rooted would give me total freedom with the phone.
When I run the command "fastboot boot recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img" here is what I get:
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.411s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.413s
Before I went through these steps I did not read anywhere that going S-off would relock hboot/bootloader to a point that I would not be able to flash anything.
Where did I go wrong? What did I miss?
One solution seems to point towards manually installing the custom JB hboot, but at this point I do not want to haphazardly make any more changes that could potentially leave me with a brick.
Here are my questions:
How do I install a recovery now that I am LOCKED, S-OFF, & ROOTED?
Will flashing the custom JB hboot at this point fix my problem or leave me with a brick?
I own the the phone, it is never going in for a warranty issue, so the TAMPERED flag does not bother me. I would just like to be ale to install AR recovery and go on my happy crack-flashing way. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You will have to unlock the bootloader to flash a recovery still.
Or you can flash a custom hboot that will allow you to use fastboot commands while locked. That's what the jbear hboot does. Just make sure you flash the jbear hboot version that matches your current hboot version.

Yeah I know, I had the same problem after s off, I still had to unlock the hboot to get the recovery to flash.
You could always install the recovery via PH98IMG.zip

Thats how I flash recovery, via PH98IMG.zip
Poster tswltd, you should try flash recovery that way, via PH98IMG.zip

There is a link in this thread with an hboot flashable zip of amon ra. You didn't do anything wrong. The juopunutbear method has a locked hboot, so fastboot flashing is a no go. You can use a hex edited 2.27 hboot by vinyl freak so you can regain fastboot flashing, but it's pretty unnecessary once you s-off.

By the way, you really should look into running a newer RUU. You still have GB radios, and they're pretty dated.

Hey Thanks everybody for responding so quickly!
OK, just so I understand things correctly:
1) I can put the latest amon ra PH98IMG.zip on the root of my sd card, boot into bootloader, let it do its thing, then I will then have a working recovery that I can use to flash, backup, etc?
2) I do not need to update a custom hboot, but I can if I want and should cause no ill effects to my phone? For example follow the direction on the Unlimited.IO website for flashing thier custom hboot?
3) My radios are outdated? That stinks. Assurion just sent me this Rezound brand new and in the box a few days ago to replace a replacement Tbolt that went bad. It was running ICS, but you say the radios are old. Hmm, could you suggest an RUU that I should run and do I simply rename the RUU PH98IMG.zip, but it on the root of my SD card, bootloader and let it update? Seems straight forward enough. The way i understand it flashing an RUU will not remove S-off, but will it remove root and will I then have to unlock again through HTCdev?
Thanks agaiin for helping this new Rezound owner out!

1) yes
2) yes
3) yes your radios are old, but you can stay that way..alot of rezounds out there are running old firmware.
here is a website that has all the RUU for the rezound http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Vigor
yes, the ones with zip in the title can been put on the SD card as "PH98IMG.zip" and it will update everything. The ones listed on that website as "EXE" are run through windows while your computer is tethered to phone.
yes flash a RUU will not remove S-off, but will remove root and replace Hboot and recovery with stock

My current hboot version is HBOOT-2.25.000 and my firmware version is 3.14.605.12 71ORD. Does this mean I would need to to install JB ICS 3.14.605.5 HBOOT - 2.25.2525?
Thanks again.

1. Yes. However, I would recommend TWRP recovery. Amon Ra is also great though, so if you have any doubts about using a different recovery, stay with AR for now.
2. Here are some hboots based on the latest release. The only difference between them and stock is that they say different things at the top instead of Locked. After you flash the RUU, flash the one you choose as PH98IMG.zip through bootloader, just like you flashed the RUU.
3. Here is the latest RUU. The method you described for flashing it is correct, but to be safe, you can do it twice. The RUU will replace your hboot and your recovery, and thereby remove root. It will also wipe your internal memory, so back it up if you keep anything there. You will not need to unlock with HTCDev - you will never need to do that once you're S-Off. After you flash the RUU, you will only need to flash the unlocked hboot to re-unlock your bootloader (step 2), and then flash the recovery (step 1). Then, from recovery, you can flash ROMs, kernels, mods, etc.

Yes that is the right JuopunutBear HBOOT if you want to install it. But you dont really need it.
And after a second look of your radio and firmware, you do have the latest over the air release, only thing newer is the Global RUU...PH98IMG_ICS_4.03.605.2.zip
If I was you, I would just flash the recovery, to get root

Thanks for the help folks. I have succesfully reinstalled AR recovery now going to try to flash my first ROM as S-Off!

You're absolutely right. The radios that he has are from the ICS ota. That was my fault. The newest radios are from the unofficial global leak.

Glad you got it working. Happy flashing!

Yeah, All is good. Recovery installed and a newly flashed CM9! Had been waiting forever for ICS to come to my old Tbolt and now that I have the Rezound this is sweet sweet butter... I am really looking forward to learning what this phone is all about and flashing all of these ROMS, that may be old news for a lot of you all, but are brand new to me!

Stuck on Hboot 1.58, S-On, with no rom installed

I'm lost as to where to begin. I'm currently looking for sprints ics ota zip to try and flash and can't find it.
My phone is currently on Hboot 1.58 with S-on and no Rom installed. I can't install any old roms because of the hboot. Any direction would be helpful

Sounds like you're in a pickle. I don't think the ruu is out yet.
I can only think of 1 thing that'll work, although their might be other options. Try to downgrade your hboot using unknownforces method. I don't think you have to be in the android system for it to work.
Not sure if it works on hboot 1.58 but I don't see why it wouldn't.

i can't attempt unknownforces method because i can't flash a .zip. It'll give an error about older/newer hboot before it starts updating.
also i've already tried using HTC's dev unlock, but it gives another error regarding older/newer hboot
Just install one of the new ROMs and do the wire trick to S-Off. Then you can downgrade your Hboot. Virus has a stock rooted ROM in the dev section. I used that ROM when I did the wire trick. Now I'm back on Devil Toast with eng 1.04 Hboot.
Edit- Just noticed you said you tried to do HTC unlock but can't. So you're saying you are S-On Locked without a ROM? How is that even possible?

As long as your LOCKED S-ON, and not RELOCKED S-ON, take that thing to a repair center. If they don't have the Sprint ICS RUU (which I doubt they do) to restore your phone, they'll give you a new one.

Same situation but I am unlocked hboot, s-on, 1.58, 4ext recovery... tried PG86IMG.zip into sdcard: a) with twr 1.1, it says older version b) with newer zip, it boots to hboot then loads then it goes back to hboot with no "press power" option.

Flashing RUU returns to out-of-the-box stock?

I'm struggling with all the terminology and methods with flashing. Basically I just wanted root, so I read several different guides and got a rooted status and managed to install the Amon Ra recovery. However my bootloader (also called HBOOT - is that correct?) shows tampered / unlocked now. Basically, I want to flash back to the most current build and try again.
Would the link on the Android Police forums to download RUU 4.03.605.2 be latest Verizon build as if it were fresh out of the box?
I checked on the wiki, but didn't see anything for the Rezound there.
Also, to use this utility, I relock my bootloader using HTCDev and then move this zipped file to my sd card and reboot to the bootloader either using adb or the power + volume down, correct? It will see the zip file and begin flashing or do I run an executable from my PC with the phone connected? I'm not S-Off because I figured that is way above my head at this point.
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
The tampered just means you have a custom recovery like Amon Ra installed.

Having S-OFF negates the need to relock your bootloader.
You should be able to flash the "RUU" zip file with your phone in its current condition.
If you do some research in this section in the S-OFF threads, you'll get some good info about not re locking after s-off.
Re-locking is only necessary if you don't have s-off.

to reinstall the RUU, first make sure you have fastboot on your PC and your phone is in the fastboot menu of the bootloader and connected to your PC. It should say "fastboot USB". (If you don't have the HTC drivers installed, download HTC Sync 3.0 and that should install it. I haven't gotten it to work on Windows 8 so if you use Windows 8 use these drivers)
Open a command prompt, change the directory to where your fastboot.exe is (example: cd c:\fastboot_directory). Type in 'fastboot oem lock'. Your phone will restart, then boot up. Turn it off, reboot to the bootloader and make sure it says *RELOCKED* on the top. Then, go back to fastboot and in your cmd window, type in 'fastboot oem rebootRUU'. Your phone will reboot and show a black screen with a grey HTC logo. Copy the RUU (doesn't matter if it's named PH98IMG.zip or something else) into the same folder as fastboot.exe and type in 'fastboot flash zip ruu_zip_name.zip' (obviously replacing ruu_zip_name.zip with the zip's actual name). The terminal will start sending the zip and details will be displayed on your computer screen. Your phone will also have a progress bar. Once the terminal on your computer says it's finished, you can reboot your phone.
I am currently S-On, unlocked, running Newts One XXX with the Global OTA (4.03.605) Sense 4 Kernel. I would now like to get the 4.03.605.2 firmware installed. Would the procedure described above work for my situation or is there another method I can use.
My next leap is to go S-off but for now I would just like to get the firmware updated before reflashing Newts.
Thanks in advance.
Yes, you can use the above method fine. However, going S-Off is very easy. It seems like a daunting task, but if you read the directions thoroughly it is very easy. I used the .5 version of Juopunutbear and it worked without a hitch. You are already unlocked and rooted, so if you S-Off, you won't have to do it all over again. From there you can flash the RUU, flash a FLASHABLE version of AR 3.15, then reflash any rom that you want. You will only get the benefit from global with roms that are built aroung the .2 base, but you will get updated radios. I haven't honestly noticed much of a difference with the new radios though.

Flash stock recovery here's a link http://www.mediafire.com/?wb21d2gdurui2c6 then lock bootloader. (Fastboot OEM lock)
After locking bootloader(cuz your s-on) rename the ruu you downloaded from android police To PH98IMG put on your sd return sd phone boot into bootloader run update, if it stops and powers off mid update remove battery and start it again, It flashed the hboot first then you gotta go back In And finish the update.

Just to clarify: when you reboot using "adb reboot" or power + volume down, are you booting into the bootloader or hboot? I've read the guides but still a little confused there.
Also, what does the stock recovery do versus something like Amon Ra? Does the stock recovery allow for creating backups and what-not? Sorry to be a total noob here. I can bake cookies or something for you all for your help, hehe.

The bootloader is the hboot. You power on holding vol down to get there.
The stock recovery does not allow you to create backups, or do much at all I'm pretty sure. That is why we have custom ones.

Sorry that you never got an answer to this. Yes, you should flash both recovery (stock) and the RUU as PH98IMG zip files. Wait to start this process until you have a pc/sd card reader available. Trying this without those basic tools is going to make this a frustrating process for you.

I need to get back to the latest stock update for the rezound. I'm on the infection ROM right now and just need to get back to the latest rezound ota. Are there any ota ROMs w root out? I dont want to have to re root again but I wanna be back on the latest ota w/ just root. Also, will I need to lock my phone again to do this?
One last thing, how can I update to the latest firmware/ hboot/kernel/radio etc. Pretty much want to return to the latest ota leak for the rezound even if its not official and then I'd like to update my hboot, radio, kernel, etc to the latest out.
Sorry for any typos I'm extremely busy at work trying to sneak this in. Thx for the help guys.

Follow the instructions in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37448962&postcount=2
That will get you updated to the latest and back to stock.
Then you can unlock again, flash a recovery and reroot and remain on stock ROM with a custom recovery and rooted.

What hboot/radio level are you at now?
For a good Sense 3.6 rom, I'd suggest Ineffabilis Deus v1.2, gives you that stock feel with tweaks available.
You can run the global RUU from here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/ You will need to re-lock if you are s-on.
You can run NilsP Business Sense 3.6 if you want a mostly stock ROM without bloat. I'd suggest restoring a nandroid from the OTA if you have it (I don't keep many nandroids, but that ICS OTA is the one I kept).
Here is the stock ICS OTA: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...cream-sandwich-ruu-for-final-ota-3-14-605-12/ You will also have to be s-off or re-locked to flash this.
Sorry if I've repeated information posted by anybody previously. That was never my intent. I just hope this helps.

so before i do anything i just want to understand a few things. im currently on a jellybean rom, infection. to get back to the latest ota i just flash the latest ruu which is 4.03.605.2? will i have any issues being s-off or being on a jb rom? and the once i get back onto 4.03 will i need to unlock using the htc website and then root again? and then my last question is, once im back to the lastest stock rom how do i update my firmware/radio/hboot, etc.? I'm just confused on what steps to take and in what order?

If you are s-off your phone should say "locked" and you can just run the RUU. Running that updates all the firmware, radios etc... and so you'll be on the latest stock and locked at that point. Run it twice and let it do its thing until it reboots so it gets all the system files.
Since you are s-off I don't think you will need to unlock again, check what the phone says in hboot as far as *tampered* *unlocked* *s-off* etc... you should confirm that with someone who is s-off.
(if you still have the unlock token you can use it again if you ever need to. Keep it handy so you'll always have it when you need it. I keep mine in the folder I use on my pc for fastboot.)
After you unlock you flash a custm recovery and root from within the recovery if you want to flash another ROM. Or use one of the tools, I've never used any of them.
I think you're good with this RUU for jb. It's the latest and I don't think anyone has anything later than that. I don't use a jb ROM so you may want to confirm that with someone who does.

You're s-off. Going s-off relocks the phone because s-off is better than unlocked. You can just flash the RUU.
I recommend against unlocking once you're s-off, because if you try to relock it yourself outside of the s-off process, it will say "relocked" instead of "locked. You can either flash a recovery through a PH98IMG.zip, or you can flash a hex edited hboot to allow extended fastboot commands.

OK so I just ruu and it will bring me back to stock. I then flash amonra 3.16 using the IMG.zip to get recovery on my phone.
(how do I flash the zip since recovery will not be on my phone yet? Do I just use the rezounds recovery to flash it?)
Then once amonra is installed I now root by installing su and superuser from the options in recovery.
Is that it, now I'm on the latest rezound stock w root? Am i still soff too, I don't need to do the wire trick to get soff again?
Oh and flashing that ruu will update me to the latest hboot and radio, correct?

Yes.
If you just want to stay stock and rooted then just run the RUU, flash recovery and root. You should still be s-off and ready to flash a custom ROM if you end up choosing to.

As long as you have a flashable zip of AR 3.15 you're good. All you have to do is rename it PH98IMG.zip (make sure you don't name it .zip.zip) and flash in your bootloader. Here is a link for an already packaged recovery zip: http://www.teambamf.net/topic/3737-bootloader-update-recovery-files-amon-ra-315-and-cwm-touch/ No need to do the wire trick again. Yes, you will be on the newest hboot and radios.

[Guide] Quick And Dirty RUU Flashing for CDMA S-OFF Users

This is going to be a short and simple guide for S-OFF users that want to update to the current RUU level or refresh their phone because they are having issues like being unable to boot certain ROM's. You will not lose S-OFF by flashing the RUU.
1. Do a nandroid backup of your current ROM if you want to restore it later.
2. Download the current version of the RUU for your phone in exe or zip format from this page.
3. Run the exe version of the RUU in Windows or the zip version as a PG86IMG.zip file through the bootloader. If using the bootloader method make sure the file is named exactly "PG86IMG.zip" and placed in the root of your SD card before starting the bootloader.
There is no need to unlock the bootloader before running it if you are S-OFF and there is troubleshooting information in this post if you have problems. It may be necessary to run the RUU twice if you have a custom bootloader installed when it is run the first time. If the utility hangs after flashing the bootloader from Windows just cancel it and restart.
I recommend downloading and installing the OTA(s) immediately after flashing the RUU to get the most current firmware while still 100% stock, but the OTA firmware update(s) can be downloaded as a separate PG86IMG.zip file if you forget or can't do that for some reason.
4. Flash a custom hboot using the instructions in this post. My recommendation for a good general purpose hboot is the JBear GB 1.50.5050 version unless you are running an ICS Sense ROM like stock or Cool ICS that requires an ICS bootloader (1.57.xxxx or 1.58.xxxx).
5. Connect your phone to a PC and start the bootloader in "fastboot USB " mode, then issue the following command to flash your favorite recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (where "recovery.img" is the name of the recovery file in your ADB/fastboot directory)
6. Boot into recovery and restore a nandroid or flash another custom ROM. You may have to wipe cache+dalvik and restart recovery if you get any error messages from the recovery program.
That's it. You're now updated or re-synced with the current firmware, the hboot that meets your requirements and your favorite recovery.
Here are some additional links that might be helpful:
4EXT Recovery OP for the Evo 3D CDMA thread with a direct link to recovery.img in the download section (not the most current version)
Current TeamWin (TWRP2) touch recovery for the CDMA Evo 3d.
Virgin Mobile OTA firmware only in PG86IMG.zip format.
Sprint OTA firmware only in PG86IMG.zip format.

No. That's an older GB level and the most current RUU for the Evo 3D is the 2.89.651.2 ICS version. That's the one I recommend.
Since he is S-OFF already it's easy to revert to a GB RUU if neccessary.

I better not mess with it,lol
This isn't anything like flashing new ROM's on my phone.

You're welcome.
It's not really that difficult if you are familiar with rooting and flashing HTC devices but I can understand how it might be for users coming from other brands. Samsung in particular is definitely less complicated.

I flashed the above RUU .exe and I'll get to 10%, then my phone reboots (RUU program says "attaining bootloader" or something) and go into a bootloop. Is there a specific hboot necessary to run this. I am on 1.04.200 and s-off, 1.09.00.706
I also tried updating via the bootloader method as well..... runs well....updates like four of the ten check offs and then bootloops as well.
Edit: turns out I was flashing the wrong version, oops

From experience I've discovered that the RUU.exe utility will sometimes stop after flashing the stock bootloader if it is run with a custom hboot installed, which is why I put this comment in the OP:
If the utility hangs after flashing the bootloader from Windows just cancel it and restart.

I've had no problem completing the RUU.exe flash if I just cancel the utility in the Windows task manager and restart it.
Others have reported that re-flashing the RUU.zip file through the bootloader also works if the original flash is incomplete.
Also, make sure that you downgrade your hboot after flashing the RUU since the stock hboot won't boot GB or AOSP based ROM's.

Try removing/replacing the battery and then use the Power+VolumeDown buttons together to enter the bootloader.
The stock ROM has the "fast boot" option turned on in the power settings by default and that will interfere if you try to enter the bootloader after powering down from the stock ROM.

I honestly don't know.
There is a post by a cricket user in my rooting and S-OFF guide that says the customization is not lost for that carrier but I've never used Boost and can't speak to that.
Perhaps another Boost user on these forums has experience with flashing the RUU.

Using the bootloader procedure is, by far, the easiest way of doing the RUU process that I've encountered. From custom ROM, to stock, back to a custom ROM in less than 45 minutes.
ramjet, thank you for your contributions to our platform.
so my wife is hboot 1.40, radio version 0.97.... running a GB ROM. I need to update her EVERYTHING(you pointed me here) and get her on NegaLite BluROM. I believe I will need to update her hboot as well. At what point in this process should that be done? Do I need to be worried that her current ROM is incompatible with either the new RUU or the new bootloader? And if it is, then I just work through it all in recovery?
Very useful thread, and thank you very much, by the way.

Yes she is S-off. She also already has 4ext recovery installed.
Does this negate my need to flash recovery in the downloader?
Since she is S-off, this should be pretty easy.
I will still need to access the bootloader via Windows cmd, yes? Or can I accomplish all of this using only the handset?

That's a stock hboot so you should be fine. You can still update using the RUU if a custom hboot is installed, but it might take a restart to complete after the stock hboot is installed.

[Q] Going S-OFF from an updated HBOOT

So, I have a dilemma. I am currently S-ON running TACHYON 1.2 (Android 4.3)
HBOOT 2.28.0000
Radio 2.23.10.0123/4
I updated the hboot and radio while S-ON. Now, I've decided I'd like to go S-OFF. According to JuopunutBear I need to be on a stock RUU for their S-OFF to work. I tried running the newest ICS RUU a few weeks ago and found that it would just error out when it was checking the file because the radios and hboot on the phone were newer than the ones on the RUU. Can I step backwards in HBOOT versions whlie S-ON or have I kind of screwed myself? Or is there a better option I haven't thought about?
Thanks
Just install a stock Rom to run s-off program. You are on a stock hboot, so no problem there.

It's a stock hboot, yes. But the RUU won't run because it is an older version hboot.
You need s-off to downgrade. Just install a stock based Rom that is rooted and run s-off procedure. You will have no issues. After s-off if you want, you can ruu
Sent from my DNA using my mind.
Step 1 from Unlimited: Verify - You are on Stock RUU (not FreshROM, Stock Rooted, HarmonyROM - none of these will work!)
They say not to be rooted or anything. What difference does it make?
Also, what do you mean by "stock rom"? Is there a stock rom I can install that is not an RUU? (maybe that's a dumb question but I don't know lol)

A stock rooted RUU would work. I was in your predicament once. First, do a nandroid backup then use this guide it'll get you to s-off. If you want to downgrade, then use this guide to accomplish this.
Thanks guys for the help. Installed the rom listed in the guide and it worked great. S-OFF now!! (Took me long enough...I've had the phone for 2 years!)
It installed JuopunutBear's hboot but whatever. I'd probably rather stick with a stock hboot but I can do that later.
Restored my nandroid backup and I'm back up and running like I never left.
Just flash this ROM and boot image, and you should be able to S-OFF, I can't remember if stock recovery is needed but that can be flashed separately as well if needed, but I don't think it is.

So, All was well until I decided to flash the stock hboot back to the phone. I put the file on the sd card and renamed it ph98img.zip and flashed it in fastboot. It said it was successful and that I was running hboot 2.28 and radio 2.23.10.0123/4. Then I rebooted and it hung up at the white screen with green htc logo. I pulled the battery and rebooted holding the power and volume buttons. It booted to fastboot so I tried a few things. I tried flashing a recovery but it said that remote was not allowed and failed. Then I tried opening the recovery I already had on the phone from fastboot and it gave me the software download icon. Nothing happened so I pulled the battery and tried to boot back to fastboot. This time it wouldn't even get to fastboot. The white screen with HTC logo comes up and then the screen goes blank. Then the software download icon comes up and then shortly there after a red triangle with an exclamation point takes its place.
That went downhill fast! Any suggestions?
EDIT: Pulling the SD card allows me to get back into fastboot! But I'm still not sure what to do. Is it because my bootloader is locked?

In fastboot does it say s-off? Try manually flashing the boot.img by extracting it. If you haven't setup enviroment variable for fastboot put the boot.img in the same directory as fastboot.exe and use command prompt by typing
Code:
cd C:\Android\platform-tools (or wherever it is for you)
Then type
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
I was able to put an RUU on another sd card and flash that. So now I'm on ICS 4.03.605.2 and running. But I still haven't solved my recovery problems.
According to this thread: androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/550408-s-off-guide-info-return-stock.html
I can either use juopunutbear's hboot (which I just flashed over the top of) to flash a new recovery or I can compile a recovery in a ph98img file (which I don't know how to do or want to do).
My question is: What happens if I unlock my bootloader while S-OFF? (Yes, it says s-off on the bootloader screen.) Will that solve my problem or do I have to go back to juopunutbear's hboot?

You can unlock when S-OFF, but there is no reason to, you can get a PH98img.zip of CWM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914215 or TWRP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1902381 and just copy it to your sd card (remember to name it exactly PH98IMG.zip, beware the Windoze "double zip" issue) then pop it in the phone, boot into Hboot with the USB disconnected and it should recognize it and flash either CWM or TWRP. from there you can flash ANYTHING you want, being S-OFF with custom recovery allows you to flash anything, no fastboot commands required.
Also, since you are S-OFF, your Hboot is mostly irrelevant, but should be the matching version to your radios... an engineered hboot (like Juopunutbears) would allow fastboot commands well locked, but fastboot isn't generally needed once S-OFF has been obtained...
Try this. no wire even, works great.

and what recovery problems are you having....flashing an hboot will not give you a recovery...and an ruu is an exe file not a ph98img file...those are OTA's.....if you need pure stock i can easily help you obtain it....i just need to know what exactly your trying to achieve

Hey REV3NT3CH,
So, thanks to the help of so many in these parts, including you, I now think I'm S-Off and I'm very interested in bringing my phone up to the latest, completely stock OTA ROM. Can you help me with that?
Thanks!
cheers,
john
