[Q] Lost ability to create contact groups in CM7 - Motorola Droid X2

Recently flashed CM7 ROM on my Droid X2 running GB 2.3.4
I have noticed that I no longer have the option to create Groups within my contacts. Is this a known limitation in CM7? Anyone else experience this?
Thanks!

Hey alright someone else on CM7 lol. I cannot deal with the buggy and unstable ICS and JB roms, they just drive me nuts.
And yes, I'm pretty sure CM7 doesn't have the groups option, it has a "favorites" tab but that's pretty different. If you really like the create groups function, maybe try some of the app store contact apps. They all are fully loaded with extra features you may or may not ever use, and I'm sure the create groups function is included in almost all of them. They might be a hair slow though.

I've been using ContactsGroupU since I had my original Droid.

HTC contact app

As soon as i got this phone I rooted it and flashed xtr rom because it looked reliable and stable. Which it was the rom was beautiful but i got the froyo bug and decided to move on to 2.2. I installed kaos froyo and love it but there are a certain things i miss specifically the htc contact app which allowed me to merge contacts from all my different sources and really minimize doubled up contacts. Is there anyway to get the htc contact app on a 2.2 rom without sense that doesn't involve flashing? Is there an apk or an apk for a similar contact app?
TLDR: Can i install HTC contact app on Kaos Froyo rom?

Unfortunately, there isn't any way of getting the HTC Dialer (which is what you're looking for) on a non-Sense based ROM. It would have to be ported, and noone has been able to do so. It may be hard or impossible without the original source code.
I have used Dialer One in the past, which is a lot more like the Sense Dialer. I don't know for sure if it has the feature you're looking for, but there's a free version on the Market. Check it out.
Edit: FYI in case you're curious enough to try putting the HTC Dialer on other ROMs anyway, forget it, I've already tried it. It's just not that easy.

What about xtr rom? It's a vanilla rom with the htc dialer. It might be sort of hybrid but it uses launcher pro (not sense) and the same dialer. I was kind of upset the htc dialer has so many little features that you take for granted until they are gone.

It is still based on the HTC framework, which is why so much of the HTC stuff is still present and works.
I really miss the HTC Alarm/Timer/etc app, too. Sigh...
Just flash xtrSense and switch to Launcher Pro or something.

I'm using Red Glass, Workshed's themed version of his FroShedYo v8: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824160
I may switch to his Vanilla, just because it's based off a newer CM build.

I think he's hoping to get it or an equivalent on a 2.2-based ROM. As much as I like xtrSENSE and xtrROM, I like CM6.x-based ROMs because of the ease of access to toggle widgets in the notification menu, Froyo-native Apps2SD, and the Froyo-native USB tethering, which has been working much better for me than any other kind or method of tethering recently, and tethering is my only internet ATM.
I don't know if the OP likes the same things out of Froyo ROMs or not, but I would assume he doesn't want to go back to more stock for anything more than the HTC alarm clock and/or contacts.

Thank you for the help. Xtr sense with launcher pro is almost equivalently the xtr rom. You hit the nail on the head perfectly as well. I love the stability smoothness and just all around solidness of the xtrroms sense and not. I just feel like i'm missing out when i roll 2.1 there is not much but just a lot of little things above ones mentioned are big. I'm going to rock xtr again for a little then switch to a 2.2 maybe kaos again or possibly what you use and weigh out what i like about both. I would drop both options if we can get a daily use gingerbread though.

Install some MotoBlur on CM7?

This is the exact reason im not using CM7, if they could bring this feature I would use it but I doubt its going to happen because blur is not open source which makes porting any or all parts of it pretty much impossible.. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong.

No. There are other roms that will give you customization and Blur, though.
There are a lot of 'locate my phone' market apps
https://market.android.com/search?q=locate+phone&so=1&c=apps
One popular app with such a feature is Lookout Security & Antivirus. If you don't want the antivirus/wiping part, Where's my droid is way more simple and works nicely too.
thanks, thats a shame Blur is not opensource, i imagine if the devs here got hold of it it could be made awesome! which Roms do use it, and are comparable in performance/features to CM7, if there are any?
thanks
Aura is a great ROM. There is a Blur version which you would probably want, and also Accounts and Debloat versions.

Well, the easy part would be downloading parts of blur.
The HARD part, however, would be reintegrating all the frameworks and filelinks and etc etc etc etc into CM7 to actually have those parts work. It is so close to impossible to completely deblur a motoblur rom that it isn't worth the effort. The other direction is also true.
Your better off checking the market out for apps to see if you can replace those missing features without the hassle of trying to get MB back on first...

I could be wrong - and if I am, I'm sure somebody will speak up, but in general, anything other than CM7 and other AOSP projects will be based on the motoblur framework. They may pull out apps and stuff, but the framework is there.
I think this would include things like Alien, Homebase, Aura, etc.
CM7 is built from the ground up, so it doesn't have all of the blur stuff in it.
A lot of the other ROMs have versions that are less deblurred or have separate downloads you can flash that will include some of the blur apps and functionality.
As far as performance, CM7 is the best I've run, but that makes sense because it is lightweight compared to ROMS that include all of the additional blur framework/functionality.
Of course on this phone, there really isn't any ROM I've used that seems "slow". For me it is more about preferences and features.
Home base is a good rom too, with bur and deblured versions.
If you can install blur, you drops all good things from cm7 ;-)

AOSP Dialer and Contacts on Sense rom!

Would it be possible to use the contact and dialer from an AOSP rom on a sense rom. I tried using the ones from CM7 and am having some issues.
Edit: I figured it out and have AOSP contacts and dialer now working on a Sense 3.0 Rom incase anyone wants it!
Not saying I particularly want it but why offer it but share no information on how to do it?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I did it that way because I didn't make the mod. The thread started out because I was having issues getting the AOSP contacts and dialer to work on my phone, so I was looking for help. After I figured it out I thought I would see if anyone was intreasted in this mod and I can send them the file or explain how they can get them. I used the contacts from CM7 which includes the dialer. If you use the dialer.apk from CM7 it will break your phone, Kills signal / service. I have the contacts pulled from that Rom if anyone wants it. I take no credit for it in any way.
im Interested!!! Hate the Rosie Dialer!!
I have a Rogers GSm version, dont know if that would affect anything
Here is the contacts apk. It is NOT flashable through recovery. Install using a file manager (like Astro) I did not create this so I take no credit for this. This came from CM7.

This is interesting. Many people including myself have wanted to have the option to integrate the aosp dialer/ contacts into a sense based rom since the good old Hero days but based on the way the two are integrated into Sense roms as a whole, this has never been possible.
I can't remember the technical reasons why, only that many concluded it wasn't much of a possibilty.
Anyway, if anyone else can confirm that we can now have these features integrated into Sense as the op states, that would be awedome.

There are a few issues with using the ASOP contacts with a sense rom. For instance joining contacts will cause a FC. I run a customized rom with as much sense removed as possible. To achieve this I have modified the ASOP contacts to work better on sense. I've never released the modified contacts because I don't have time to support it. The features I use work fine now (for instance the join fc is fixed) ; however, I'm sure there are other issues and at the moment I have no time to resolve anything found.
If people are willing to live with what you get is what you get I can post my modified contacts tonight after work.
HtcDialer still needs to be installed. I can also post a version of this modded to hide the icon from the app drawer and to stop it from being used for certain functions (a convenience feature so I don't have to select the ASOP contacts as the default)

[Q] Rooting vs Rooting + ROM

OK so a year later and frustration with Moto update waits, I'm considering rooting this phone. My main reason for doing so is mainly to freeze or remove Blur and carrier (Bell) bloatware, but I have some questions about which way to go with this:
1. Rooting but not flashing a custom ROM. Instead, freeze the bloat using TiBU. This would be the far simpler method I think. I would then install a custom launcher (I currently prefer Launcher 7) and freeze the Blur home launcher so it doesn't run behind Launcher 7. My concern about this method is that I've read occasional reports by people that some of the "frozen" Blur system apps actually continued to work...
2. Flashing CM7. This is my 2nd choice. I'm a pretty lazy guy, and I don't mind rooting with how easy it is to do these days, but the extra work flashing custom ROMS isn't appealing to me. If I am forced to go this route, (a)What's the best way to freeze or remove the launcher that comes with CM7 and replace with one of my choosing so that two launchers are not running at the same time? (b)Does CM7 come with all the Motoblur and Carrier stuff removed?
I would go with the CM7 route. it is a little more to do but not by much and the payoff will be much greater. once you have it though as far as the launcher goes just install the one you want and use titanium back up to uninstall ADW (the launcher that comes with most CM7 builds). And use CM7 is a non BLUR ROM so blur is fully non existant on it. and all the other bloat ware is gone as well. You can go even further and use the nuetrino ROM witch is reall barebones and you can add on the stuff you need but i would suggest grabbing the CM7 RC1 nightly and running with that. Any question on how to do any of this just read the noob guide over and it is a breeze and you will even seen how easy it is to do after that and find yourself testing out many diffrent roms.
thanks, I only have 2 questions that will make or break CM7 for me -
has a good stable solution been found for the poor camera quality I've seen reported with CM7?
How well does CM7 play with GPS and the Motorola Cardock? I use those a LOT
I hae had no issues with camera quality on my CM7 and as far as the GPS car dock not sure how it will effect it. i can say that GPS over all is also not a issue for me. i dont have the car dock but i do use GPS navigation most of the day every day and have no issues.

[Q] Can you share your experience with me?

I never installed a custom ROM, so before I start my own adventure I'd like to ask if you guys would like to share your experience with me.
My goal would be to find a clean and bloatware free alternative. I love how nice and smooth some of my Nexus devices work and would be cool to see such a thing running on the Razr Maxx too, with all that battery power. I'm happy with the design and look of the stock ROM so I am not looking for any fancy changes, just something like Stock ROM without any unncessary packages.
I hope such a thing exists and that it might somehow boost the battery usage efficiency, otherwise I guess I'll just keep on going with root and freeze anything I don't like.
Some info on my device:
System version - 982.124.14.XT910.Retail.en.EU
Model number - XT910
Android version - 4.1.2
Baseband version - U_04.10.00R
Webtop version - wt-3.0.0
Thank you for you time.

If you do like stock ROM, then I'd say flash a stock based custom ROM instead.
It gives you the advantage to use HDMI or webtop if you ever need.
Not that I'm saying anything against CM11.

Thanks, slimkat will be my first attempt then.
For a start I'll start following what this guy here says: link
So far I tried:
Cyanogenmod
cm-10.1.2-umts_spyder - problems with aosp keyboard
cm-10.1.3-umts_spyder - problems with aosp keyboard
cm-11-20140319-NIGHTLY-umts_spyder - didn't quite like it
Slim Jelly Bean
Slim-umts_spyder-4.3.build.2.2-UNOFFICIAL-20131119-1959 - it only has nova launcher as default display manager
So in a moment I'll try out MoKee
Anyway, thanks for the initial input everyone. At least now I started discovering various roms.
Any custom rom has problems, only stock is almost perfect on stability but there is a lot of options and customizations not available. Some errors take more time to appear. Everyone has different interests and hardware so you might never suffer some bugs.
If aosp keyboard is not working for you, there is options like swype (included in stock but for cm you have to buy it. Thought it has upgrades that can be worthy like dragon speaking) or swiftkey.
Stock rom without carrier bloat... only Brazil retail.
Looking for stock Heavily debloated... Search for de-blur ones. My advice here would be to try to deblur by your own by reading a de-blur list and removing one by one. Some roms out there can be deblurred more than you would like.
Interesting stock ROM? China ROM (i believe current version is 400-430) has a unique feature... Call recording without having to mess with configurations, system files etc.... and very nice stability and battery compared to other stock options. Read its thread thoroughly since installing it is not so easy due to region restrictions (read about CID) and something called CDT.bin that can get you unable to revert to other ROMs or even use your phone again depending on circumstances (CDT.bin problem is not exclusive to China ROM).
Currently using slimkat, had cyanfox before. I Spend at least a day with current rom before installing jbx since flashing another kernel can bring new bugs that are not caused by current rom. (Thought normally jbx gives a big improvement on speed and other things sometimes it has bugs).

It is a bad idea to freeze any system apps that aren't on the deblur list if you don't kow what you are doing. Everything he has there is safe to freeze, and some of their processes can be handled better by other apps anyways.
Regardless welders list is EXAMPLE ONLY! If you are looking to debloat your stock ROM, take angrist's advice and find/read the debloat(deblur) list for Razr, and freeze processes that you feel you don't need one at a time. Use the phone a little bit and see if it causes you issues, then move to the next.
I'm using CM11 Nightly 03-22 nothing else but pagapps and the only thing I've been missing is audio being routed through the usb when in docked mode. Absolutely love it.
And remember, if you will remove something like launcher, better have installed it's replacement first.
