I use AndSMB with no issues
The app I mentioned when ran, shows up on your windows machine as just another share which is perfect to upload files to...I can't figure what andSMB is supposed to do but it isn't showing up on my network with default settings.
It is the reverse. It allows you to go out to shares on your network and upload/download from your Android device.

I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the ASTRO browser installed and 20 GB of files on the sdcard. Does anybody know of a search app that will enable me to search the entire sdcard quickly, as one would do with Google desktop or Copernic?

Do you mean on the tab or from the PC?
If you talking about the Market app "Astro File Manager", it searches the SDCard very quickly from the tab. Give some more info and I'd bet you will get some better answers.
We where discussing the lack of drive-letter access in this thread, so searches from PC's are going to be limited to "if" the search tool can even access a Windows Media Device. I don't know of a way to do that....but some one will chime in if they do I'm sure.

There is a search magnifying glass in the toolbars in the Astro file manager?

I'm referring to the Astro File Manager, and I'm interested in searching the sdcard from the tablet. Since my sdcard contains a synced copy of all of my desktop PC files, I have no need to search the tablet from the PC. If I'm sitting at my PC, I'll just search the PC. Astro searches the tablet, but not quickly. Astro takes about 1 minute to search my sdcard when I search through file names only, and the search returns no results when I use the "Find text in file" option, which is not helpful. I've been spoiled by Google, Copernic, and Windows 7 and now find waiting so long for a search that only checks file names to be retro in a bad way.
I'll give a practical example to supply more info about why I asked the question. Thanks to this thread I had my tablet with me (with all of my documents on the sdcard) at a meeting yesterday and somebody had a question about a file from two years ago. I couldn't remember which directory the file was in or what it was named, and was unable to track it down with the Astro search or by browsing. After about a minute of poking around, the moment had passed and we gave up and moved on to the next topic. I went back to my office and found the file in about 2 seconds on my desktop PC using the Copernic desktop search tool, which I think is awesome. I would like to be able to do the same thing with my tablet, i.e., have an indexed search engine for the sdcard on it. Had I found the file quickly at the meeting, we could have resolved the issue on the spot instead of putting it on the agenda for the next meeting.

Trying to do a similar thing, i would be extremely interested by a solution too.
By curiosity, what program do you use for syncing purpose? SugarSync?
Edit : just see the thread you linked in your previous post. You can try sugarsync, seems very promising and easy, and 5go is enough to carry all my work.
I wonder if it exists another solution with our own server maybe?

Sorry about the slow response. I tried SugarSync and it wasn't my thing. 5 GB of free space was not enough. 30 GB was $4.99 per month and I'm way too cheap and stubborn for that. Although price really isn't that much, I decided I would find a way to sync my files between two devices with no monthly free, period. Special thanks to the Samba developers for making that possible.

I've been searching for an app or a way to be able to access the shared folders of my desktop PC in my android mobile (Huawei U8650 not rooted) and my tablet (Acer A100 also not rooted).
I want to be able to watch my movies in the shared folders or read my ebooks like I do from my laptop.The PC is connected with a wifi rooter as all the rest devices. Since the laptops can access the shared files, I guess my android devices should also be able to do it... but how...?
Does anybody know a way... a simple and 'stable' way...

It does the job but is slow. I've tried download music/movies over from shared folder and it takes ages - and sometimes just stalls in the middle and you can do nothing about it.
while sometimes it can do a good job. bit of a hit and a miss really, for large files - definitely a miss.

I use this and it does have issues but for me, they are to do with using multiple files (moving, deleting, etc). For movies and music, it works just fine.
Although I use UPNPlay for music.
Is there an android app that lets me tell my computer at home to download a file? Sometimes im out on the road and see a new 600mb rom posted and I want to be able to tell my computer at home (with a faster connection) to download it so when I get home I can just flash. I like how in the utorrent android app I can send torrent files from my android to my computer and when I get home, its finished downloading. Im wondering if I could do something like that but for regular non torrent links. Thanks.

pocket cloud and pocket cloud explorer are a pair of apps worth looking at, pocket cloud is a remote desktop client, should do what you want,, but sluggish over 3g but still workable

Hi All,
Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this question and/or it's already been asked.
I have an old phone (Nexus 1). I want to use it as a DLNA server so that I can store music and videos on this device and then view/play this content on other devices (For this example, the Archos 101 G9 512MB).
To setup the DLNA server on the Nexus 1 I installed the 'Servers Ultimate' app and setup a simple DLNA server. I have a SD card connected to the Nexus 1 which has a couple of videos on it. I start the DLNA server on the Nexus 1 and it runs without any problems.
On the Archos 101 G9 I open the stock 'Files' app, select 'Network', select 'Media server (UPnP)', refresh the list but no server are found.
I've tried searching for solutions on Google but have yet to find anything useful.
The plan is, once setup to run within my personal network, I will setup port forwarding on my router so that I can access this content when outside of my internal network (E.g. through 3G). Not so sure if this is possible as DLNA looks more like an automatic internal system rather than having options to specify the address of my DLNA server.
Any advice would be great.

These cases are always complex, as there are multiple variables.
Let's start with the easiest ones: are the devices connected to the same access point? If not, are they in the same lan? If they are, you can test and ran fing to see if the archos is able to "see" the nexus 1. Please post here after testing with fing.

Both devices are connected to the same access point. My home network is just a single Wifi router. From the Archos I can see the Nexus 1 in Fing.
Also, Just installed the 'BubbleUPnP UPnP/DLNA' app on my Galaxy SIII to see if that can connect to the DLNA server hosted on the Nexus 1. In the 'setup network wizard' when I enter my server address as http://192.168.1.4:8086 the following is returned: The remote server could be joined but returned HTTP error code 404 (Not Found). Obviously this is indicating that there is something wrong with the configuration at the Nexus end rather than the SII or Archos. Any ideas?
Having doubts about Bubble app now...possibly this app only works when bubble is installed at both ends (On the player and on the server?) If you know that this is the case, do you know an alternative which will let me test a connection to the DLNA server from the SIII?
Finally, not sure if it works this way but if I go to the address (http://192.168.1.4:8086) in a browser on my laptop I get the following message: FORBIDDEN: No directory listing.

That's a nice amount of info. Okay, no we have ruled out the chance of network not working between these devices.
Have you added media files to the DLNA server? Also that 404 error sounds like there are no files. You said you are using Servers Ultimate, so maybe you could try if CIFS/SMB works? I don't think 8086 is the default port for DLNA, which would explain why Archos does not find it. It looks in the default ports.

I've managed to see files (and play them) if I host the DLNA server on my SIII (Not using the 'Servers Ultimate' app). I ended up using 'Pixel DMS Media Server'. Seemed a bit flakey but need to do more testing. Not so sure about ports but that might make sense as Pixel Media Server uses UDP Port 1900 (Hard coded).
Annoying, if I installed exactly the same app on my Nexus, the device doesn't show on the Archos. I think I'm going to copy some more files to the SD card which currently resides in the Nexus and see what difference that makes.
I think as far as discussing this on the Archos forum goes, this is closed as the files are appearing on the Archos. Thanks for your help.

I attach my Nikon D800 through an OTG. My phone finds my camera and I'm able to copy files on to my device, but I'm not able to browse my camera using a file explorer. How can I browse it normally through a file explorer?
The camera doesn't mount under /mnt/ as a normal USB mass storage unit since it's using MTP protocol.
I have an FTP program on my phone and need that to access pictures directly on camera and send them. To be able to do that I need to be able to browse the memory cards in my camera.
I know I was able to do this before, and as I have understood that was possible during android 3.1.x. Now I have 4.1.2 stock rom and not able to anymore.
Some help would be greatly appreciated since I'm dependent on being able to use FTP directly from my camera.

Do you have an I9100 ? Reason I ask is this device never got Android 3x. We went straight from Gingerbread (2x) to ICS (4x).
Edit to add -Also, a Google search (which frankly is better than XDA search) for 'I9100 XDA DLSR USB OTG' yields a bunch of threads here that could be useful to you. As this is something that very few people here would use (at least nowdays; it may have been more common when this phone was more widely used by people here), and as these forums don't see anywhere near as much traffic as they did even 12 mths ago, you might be waiting a very long time to have your questions answered. I'd suggest you mine those threads for any info which might be useful.
