It happens to me too.
Is it a limitation of the transmitting medium and protocol, or of Android and/or phone?

i heard you can only do this on 3g and above.. that means that edge/gprs cannot browse/etc... while on a call... i read this somewhere i kinda forgot where...

It's called dual transfer mode (DTM) you could google it.

It depends on the operator i guess,..

2G or GSM network does not allow data transfer and calls simultaneously. you have to use 3G for that.
/thread
You can surf in EDGE with some Carriers while Calling
Not possible, the operators don't allow it to prevent overload.

No, I have used nokia C5 & E51 on 2G network and there is always a data disconnection during a call. This is one of the difference between 2G & 3G(apart from speed, etc)

Damn... 2g speed is just the same as dial up connection speed..i really thought the days of dial up speed has gone forever..anyway..logically speaking..on 2g network on a phone..even using voip is very difficult..so you can imagine for video transmission...just a big NO i guess.

Could you share a TUT bro?
Cant seem to find one anywhere (google + xda) :/
using andys rom.
Here u go guys its a very simple method ..
I have tested this on aircel and airtel but do not know about other providers and many rumors are saying trick in airtel is no more working..at present I'm using aircel and getting average speed of 430kb/sec using idm while tethering ..occasionally goes higher but never stays there ..
Points to be noted:
1)it is neccessary to have 3g coverage in your area.
2)it is adviced to keep balance below 10rs to avoid problems.
Steps :-
1)activate 2g plan ,like I have a 98 Buck plan for a month..
2)get the settings installed, for aircel apn is aircelgprs.PR
3)activate 3g .
4)now connect to internet using 2g!
5) u will get 'e' symbol on top..
6) now go to setting n select network type and select 2g/3g preferred ..
I use 3g only and haven't been charged till now ..
7) after a few seconds the 'e' symbol will change to' h' ie hsdpa ..
8) enjoy high speed internet..
***
For changing network to 2g /3g preferred, we have the network selection mode option in miks 6.5.8 ..if u r not using dis rom just untick the" use 2g only" option.
Or get the app named 'network'
By Phillip manglow from market!

The i777 doesn't have the bands for Simple Mobile's 3g. I'm pretty sure you'll just be stuck with EDGE.

dude, you are trying to figure out a way to trick the network into seeing something THE PHONE DOESNT HAVE, which is HARDWARE to support the frequencies...
so lets throw some logic in this shall we?
EVEN if you could trick the network into thinking you had the hardware, your HARDWARE wouldnt be able to utilize the network speeds......so what would the purpose be?

What? Simple Mobile is a T Mobile virtual network operator reseller. They are in no way affiliated with AT&T or do they support AT&T frequencies. No wonder you're trying to "trick" the network into thinking its a different phone.

I'm just asking a question if it's possible to get 3G speeds. I'm new to the forums and still learning the aspects of my phone and the network. Too harsh..but thanks anyways.
It wasn't just a question, it was a seriously stupid question. Like asking if there's a pair of glasses you can wear that will make a Prius look like a Corvette. Sorry, but it just isn't possible. You can't spoof the network into thinking your phone has hardware it doesn't. Are you getting that yet?

Hmm, I thought I did. I guess it didnt fully engage. Oh well, its closed now.
I have had my Xperia ray for around a month now, and it's annoying me every so often the data connection seems to hang, the upload and download symbols near the signal strength just flash on and off and I get connection time-outs or sometimes it goes extremely slow like dial up speeds. Sometimes I attempt to reload the page and the data connection comes back to life, it's so annoying, especially when I am using it as a wifi hotspot on my PC. I am using the right settings, I am on T-Mobile UK and using the access point name general.t-mobile.uk. Prior to the Sony Ray, I had a Nokia 6700 classic which was totally faultless, so I know it can't be the network. I am currently using baseband 72 with JJDoctor's GBlite rom. I know it suggests using baseband 58 but it's just the same no matter what baseband I use or if I use ICS or Gingerbread. I really would love to get this data connection problem sorted once and for all, it's so annoying. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
I got the same problem, any solution?
Sent from my ST18i using xda premium
So it looks like I am not the only one. What baseband are you using?
Basebands 70 and up are ICS basebands so you will encounter probs when using them on GB the highest GB base band you can use is 66, use the search button I have explained basebands already . If you don't know what baseband fits your rom libs then post a question in your roms thread asking the dev what version it is based on and go from there and finally please post questions in the correct sections and don't junk up the dev section

It's not an exact solution, but you can use "Wi-Fi Kill" app to block other devices in network. So, your relative speed will be higher.
Google has kicked out this app from Play Store, but you can find its APK on Internet. Just, search..

WiFi Kill spoofs ARP replies to trick other devices on the network into thinking your Android device is the router. Then, it drops all their network packets.
Will that crash the server tho? In other words.. will it get me in the ****

Which type of server you are talking about?
Original Wi-Fi router (with default gateway) and your device will work fine. So, servers on these two devices will work fine.
So mine and the router will be fine. Just all the other wireless connections will go down? Or does this include wired? Im guessin not.. but i aint riskin all the pcs goin down

As your device can't send ARP replies to wired clients without magic, wired clients will not be affected. Only wireless clients will be victims.

Well, I have used it many times in public Wi-Fi. Here's the Internet speed result: 1Mbps to 25+ Mbps (could be more, but device had limitation)!
