[Q] Audio Quality Amaze/MT4G

Hey guys I've read some posts, reviews and watched some video samples of the Amaze and from what I can tell..it's true, the audio recording on this phone is horrible.
I wanted to ask if anyone from this forum could compare it to the MT4G?
That's the phone I am currently using now and want to know how does it measure up to the MT4G's audio recording when shooting video.
I ask because I record a lot of videos with my MT4G and it's important that the audio quality on the Amaze isn't less than my phone.
1080p would be awesome to have (mine has 720p) but I don't want to sacrifice audio quality.
So with that being said, could anyone tell me from personal experience whether it's worse or better when compared to MT4G?
Thanks a lot.
I would ask if you are so concerned for professional reasons and then I realized a pro would use a real camera...
Not trying to be a prick or anything. Just curious.
What is with the concern of how well the audio is recorded off your phones camera?

Because I don't own a point and shoot camera so I rely on my phone to do all the recording.
I have two kids, 5 and 4, and I record them all day, everyday.
So yeah I just don't want to sacrifice the audio quality for better video quality.
Cause if you have kids that young you should know the audio is the most important part!! They say some of the craziest things. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for asking though. I don't mind explaining. Do you have any thoughts here?

If you want good audio quality on a phone camcorder, you're not going to have any luck with HTC, put simply. The Amaze is a fantastic phone and video quality is among the best out there, but audio has never been HTCs strong point. If you're looking for great audio, I'd suggest looking into a Motorola device, though T-Mobile really doesnt support Moto anymore it seems. If you do go with Motorola, just know that video quality will not be the best on most, at least from what I've seen. The Razr looks solid on both fronts. Then there's the iPhone 4S, which undoubtedly has the best of both worlds. Either way, I'll stick with the Amaze. I love it in every way.

AWESOME!!!! Way better answer than anything I could think of. I definitely see where you are coming from. Audio would be very important.
Not that I have taken a lot of video with mine yet but I have to say it does not sound any better/worse than my iPhone's ever did. Video is a ****load better though

So it's not like a horrible difference yeah? Well that's good.
I mean my biggest thing was whether it'll be worse than my current phone.
myTouch 4G.
That's really what I'm trying to get at.
I don't have a problem with my phone's current audio recording.
I just don't want to be downgrading. =P

Thank you.

The audio quality is very good. But not stellar. Much depends on the source. If you use badly compressed mp3 files and cheap earbuds don't expect much. The phone can play .flac files if you install a 3rd party player like PowerAMP. That combined with a good set of headphones (I'm using Klipsch, which are also very good but not stellar) then the audio quality is more than adequate.

Why don't you take you're kids to a t-mobile and take some test videos too compare? Seems Luke that would be the easiest thing for you to do and you would not have to rely on any the opinion of someone else.

As far as recording, the audio is just as good as my vibrant...take that as you may--I am not a huge video guy. Plus, once you record, you can edit the audio on your pc.
PowerAmp is the single, most important app for me...in the car, at work, everywhere, the output is amazing.

Beats Audio
Do you know if Beats Audio will be in the Amaze anytime soon or in the dev posts?
audio seem ok to me...I had the SGS2 which only provides MONO audio, and audio quality seemed good . This phone provides mono and Stereo so I played around with it and when I put it on mono audio the sound quality is much better, but then again you get mono....So It might have something to do with the extra microphones trying to pick up extra sound and cutting out the background noise....Personally I feel the sound on the Amaze is much more clear with high treble, than the SGS2, is the only phone I can compare it to. sound on SGS2 was muffled a little. also the speakerphone on the back and front of the HTC device sound much less muffled than My SGS2, I have no experience with motrola or any other brank of phone.

I installed a app from the marketplace called Volume+, it was less than 2 dollars. But you can go to the dev website and download it for free. It boost up the volume from the audio playing from the loudspeaker and headset. I don't know if it will boost the recorded incoming audio. To me I had the MT4G rooted with a sense 3.0 Rom and I already love this amaze. As long as your hand doesn't block the microphones on the phone it is fine. Plus for 15 dollars you can buy the adapter to hook up to your tv and watch the glorious 1080p via HDMI. Also my Amaze is all stock. Plus the reception and call quality is very good.

This may seem odd but I found that, to me at least, it sounds better with the "stereo recording" off. That's how my MT4G videos sound.
Anyway, volume is not the problem here. It's sound quality.
I get the best recording with an app called rec forge, mono, wav and 22khz sample rate. The stereo recording does not improve the fidelity of the sound. I have yet to try an external Mic.

I don't know that any of the ICS ROMs actually supporting Beats. Beats is a combination of hardware(DSP) and a software controller. The hardware in your phone will continue to function properly. The software just isn't controlling it properly. Wait for the full ICS release if you need beats.
At least a couple of ICS ROMS do support Beats. I've tried both Ineffabillis Deus v1.0.1 and CleanROM 2.3 and they both work:

The beats icon comes up but I haven't heard a noticeable difference like activating beats on GB.
I hear a difference when toggling it on nils ics. Mainly just loudness but it's been a while since I was on gb so I can't remember if it was a bigger difference in gb. You won't hear any difference if you toggle it via the drop down menu, you must enable / disable from within the music player settings.
In the end, it's probably best for one of the devs to chime in on this if they want to. So, ICS devs- is the beats in ics just placebo / higher volume? Or is it enabling the same eq as what is in the gb roms?

It's the same for me using CleanROM ICS.
Doesn't do anything on ics. Went from listening to a song on ICs on my cR to switching back to GB and huge difference.

Just grab the Equalizer app from the market, it actually works with pandora(unlike beats). It is well worth the $1.99(Free version is just fine as well)

Are you sure you're enabling/disabling in the right place? To say it does "nothing" is not the case for my ics rom (nils)- there is definitely a change in volume if nothing else. Now- if I enable/disable from notification bar it does indeed do "nothing".
beats definitely works on cleanrom 2.3 and senseless
That's why I was hoping for a dev to chime in here. Getting a lot of "Yes, it definitely works" as well as plenty of "No- it does nothing!" -- I went back to GB last night for other reasons- and there seemed to be a bigger difference between enabling/disabling than there was on ICS- but that might have just been what my ears "wanted to hear" after taking the time to go back to GB.
Enabling it from settings though is really just switching from to/from the HTC sound enhancer. Which really does nothing
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Then why is there a difference in the sound? (ics)
I use beats ear buds but not the music app that enables beats. You could just use an equalizer app to make the same enhancements I use volume+ to make my diddybeats headphones sound amazing as well as the stock ones, it also has a beats simulation option now (I don't think it really does anything, or my eq settings are too close to it for it to make a noticable difference ).. anywho just an idea

Well what I was getting at was this. I listened to the song Rack City by Tyga in my car, on cleanrom 2.2 at the time, and then went and flashed ineffabalis 1.0 and listened to the same song. Major difference. Volume in the car was never changed, both times over AUX and both times phone at Max volume. So then I actually tried another test. I just forgot to post. I flashed cleanrom 2.3 and played devils den by skrillex on my rezound for 60 seconds. Then replayed the same song on my iPod nano I have for the gym, with the EQ off on my iPod for the same 60 seconds. No real difference. Then I flashed back to newts rom again, played the same 60 seconds on his rom then again on the iPod. Major difference in sound.
Hence why I say beats does not work on ICS. Maybe uses half functionality, since as another said beats is both hardware and software. So maybe only the software side is kicking in and doesn't have to much difference without the HW. That I cannot answer.

There are other equalizer/sound boost app options that work as well, just require a bit of tweaking to find that full, deep sound
I found a major difference in what beats does between GB and ICS myself.
In ICS I found all it really did was make the music louder, in GB it majorly increases the bass etc.
I really like beats myself, it is certainly not audiophile quality sound but who cares when you're listening to a phone??
Sure, you can get the same sound eventually after messing with something like DSPManager but beats is so easy that I love it, and it works with all my different setups. I have the Beats Studio headphones and a bunch of earbuds including a $399 Ultimate Ears set that I got on a closeout for $69

PowerAmp update now has HTC Beats/SRS support

FYI, Looks like PowerAmp is the first 3rd party music app to finally incorporate Beats. I just saw the update yesterday and updated. Officially the changelog says "HTC Beats/SRS support"
On the Volume screen there now a little button for Beats. I noticed a slight, not big, improvement in the sound, but that may be because I was already using a custom equalizer setting that seemed close to how Beats sounded in the stock player. (I use my Rezound hooked up to my Bose stereo in my car - haven't tried to check out the difference with headphones yet)
But PowerAmp is SO much more robust a player than the stock player (custom settings, lockscreen controls, keep screen on option while playing, etc, etc), so I can switch back to it now that is has Beats!
Thanks for the info.
I have a feeling that this is just a beats eq setting and has nothing to do with the beats software on the phone. I'm curious if phones without beats still have that option to turn it on. Regardless, good find and thanks for the heads up.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to replicate the Beats algorithm. It does little more than equalization and some games with phasing and delay, and easy enough to discover using comparative analysis of a signal pre/post beats.
Seems to do a good job, though. I can't tell the difference between PowerAmp's beats setting and the hTC Beats algorithm.
I just switched back & forth multiple times between the stock player & PA (I have used the paid version for years) using the beats setting.
The PA beats setting is really nothing like the stock player with beats enabled.

Also if a reputable Co. Sais they have a beats setting. I would imagine there would be some qualification before such a claim could be made. Is the beats logo being used by PA?

There is no beats logo and the setting is very hard to find.
When I enable the setting in PA, I can hear the difference but it doesn't make much of a difference at all IMHO. The beats setting in the stock app makes a MUCH bigger difference as long as your using a GB ROM.
if you are using an ICS ROM, Beats doesn't work well at all (in most ICS ROMs it doesn't work at all) so that's a different story.
---------- Post added at 06:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:12 PM ----------
By the way, I am a big fan of beats. It is certainly possible to make PA sound very similar if you play with the EQ settings enough, but beats makes it so simple and it works with all my different headsets (I have quite a collection of them)

Enabling Beats, SRS and the "Techno" EQ preset really made a big difference for me. Thanks for the heads up!
Well there may be some legitimacy to this. I just tested it out on the Thunderbolt and.........Nothing! Not even an option for it. So, is it as good as the stock player, I guess everyone will have to decide for themselves.
I am a little surprised that the beats logo doesn't appear in top bar when it's active on the Rezound.

Be careful of you stream audio to a Bluetooth enabled stereo. I had streaming issues (no streaming at all) all day today. Max replied to an email I sent him asking about this, stating that enabling beats through Poweramp on an HTC device will break bluetooth streaming.

I tried comparing PowerAmp with the Beats setting vs the stock player with Beats on my Bose car stereo on the way home from work yesterday playing some 320 kbps songs and the stock player seemed a tad cleaner in sound (slightly less bass too), so I may not be as keen on the PA update.
But once again, I'm using a custom equalizer setting on PA I set up awhile ago that I like, while now adding the Beats setting. Perhaps using another equalizer preset with the new Beats setting will be better, but I'll keep messing around with it. The Beats setting definitely made the PA sound slightly better than without it, but not sure if it's enough to make me switch back to PA at this point...

Beats Audio Control Panel?

Anyway to get something like this Beats control panel like on HP Beats laptops like mine here. Really Beats on my laptop sound way more amazing then Beats on our Rezound.
Agreed, that would be nice.
My Son's LT has that panel also.
Honestly, I can't stand to use the stock Music player due to being stuck with either the Beats or HTC "enhancement" both of which only ever sounds like a bit of reverb and bass boost added, by different degrees. On decent high-end 'phones it just sounds like garbage. I'd feel suckered by the hype if I didn't already expect it to be empty hype.
The Rezound, on the other hand, is awesome.
I couldn't actually care less about beats, I bought the phone because I liked it. I have never really used the integrated beats software, I always use PowerAmp which is so much more advanced than most other music players.

I agree, I didn't buy this phone at first because of the Beats gimmicks but once I saw the specs and the news of ics coming to it plus BJ's Wholesale had them on sale for $99, I had to get two.

The app works perfectly, I have about 30 different sets of earbuds/headphones & 99% of them are only "iphone compatible" so I use this app every single day.

This is definitely a matter of preference but I tried both Player Pro and Poweramp and I have found the sound is EXACTLY the same on both players. They both utilize the same 10 band EQ. Poweramp even gives you the option to turn on Beats, which I find to be unnecessary. In the end, the only difference is the UI - I had already purchased Poweramp so there was no need for Player Pro, but the sound, I found, was exactly the same after tweaking. I'm sticking with Poweramp

Power amp helps with headphones but I would never use it in my car. I can't stand the sound of an analog input. I hate to admit it but I use an iPod, reformatted, no compression, flat eq. I let my fosgate 3sixty.2 perform all the magic.

[Q] Do they really have beats?

I remember some threads in the Epic 4G Touch forum about beats and there was a lot of drama with it. People claiming it didn't work and was only a placebo for those who noticed a difference. Is it any different this time around?
beats its def overrated. just exaggerated bass and treble. you can do that with any eq software
I flash a rom with it on it but it does absolutely nothing! What's the point?

Beats is flashable through CWM, but as the other posters said, it's just an overrated equalizer.

Beats is just marketing stuff lol. All the kids at my gym wear beats headphones now because they think it is cool
UM I HAVE THE EVO 4g lte and the gs3 beats is not by any means a gimmick . The stuff on the market won't replicate the sound so stop the lies please. It's more of a studio sound to the music that's tailored to rap n r&b music. Rock n roll and all the other music don't sound that great with beats. But there's something that's pretty close its called awesome beats which you can flash. I played with the settings a tad and got it to sound like my evo . But if you don't listen to rap or r&b don't waste your time with awesome beats or beats by dre. I work in a studio everyday as a teacher and you can tell the differrence when listening threw studio monitors. I was a sketic of beats when a student asked me about it, but we did some testing and its pretty legit, we actually used his laptop and my evo with the same song and it was identical.

What you're describing sounds like the "soft bass" EQ preset with PowerAMP....
My experience with Beats is similar to the majority here in that it's just an equalizer. However, what I've noticed is that with ear buds, I was able to get louder and clearer sound out it. But, with other equalizer settings, I got more bass from others - which is what I wanted.
Now, in my car, the equalizer setting I used for more bass what almost overkill in the car. Beats provided the best experience from the rest of the equalizers in my car.
I've never tried Beats ear buds or headphones, so I can't comment on that. But, I'm darn sure they're not on the league of Bose.

i think its safe to say if theres 50 people saying that they can achieve better sound than beats using a EQ program than were probably not "lying".
I took my evo lte back and though it did sound good, the built in EQ program on the music app on the s3 has made my music sound just good as beats. Its all marketing.
