kexec cm10/aosp - Motorola Droid RAZR

do i must flash the kernel?
if i run the stock rom on STOCK-partition on the ss3 recovery,
does custom-kernel rom installation effects on the stock-one?
i just curious about this kernel.

No, afaik the kernel is already inside kexec roms

The kernel is part of the ROM flashing.
If you install kexec on slot 1 it will not affect your stock rom.
App data and Apps are specific and exclusive to each ROM slot installation with the exception of what you have specified to backup to google. (ie. contacts and calendar, etc) those will download (restore) and sync to your google account for each slot installation if you set up your google account on the new ROM installation.

Kexec is NOT A ROM or a KERNEL !!!
First of all you need understand the word KeExec ( KErnel EXECution ) its a mechanism of the Linux kernel that allows "live" booting of a new kernel "over" the currently running kernel. kexec skips the bootloader stage (hardware initialization phase by the firmware ) and directly loads the new kernel into memory, where it starts executing immediately.
And yes you can have a stock based and a kexec based version with SafeStrap 3 .. We must thank HashCode for this
I hope this clears your doubt

[Q] Upgrading the Kernel on a Custom ROM

Hello all,
Today I've flashed a custom ROM for the first time on my P500. Everything was smooth and my phone is now running #Devoid Froyo Final. I've gotta say that I bought this phone already modded with Light 2.2.2 running, but I wanted to learn the process and test other ROMs myself (also I was not happy with Light 2.2.2 battery consumption).
I'm using CWM as my custom recovery (installed via ROM Manager).
Now I want to go ahead and upgrade the Kernel to the latest Franco's build, but I just want to make sure that I have the process right (better safe than sorry). According to Franco's Kernel post the instructions are as follows:
1. Reboot intro recovery
2. Flash the latest kernel version from this topic
3. Reboot
4. Flash the ZRAM module
5. Enjoy
Still I need some clarifications with some of those steps:
1.- Franco's Kernel has two versions on the post: "V.17 and V.17 BFS"... it says that BFS is the one for Noeijns ROMs, so I want to confirm that for #Devoid Froyo Final I need the "V.17 BFS" version
2.- Since the instructions says that I should flash the kernel and then reboot and then flash the ZRAM module, should I use the "Reboot Recovery" option on ClockWorkMod to reboot directly into recovery to flash the ZRAM, or should I boot normally into the Phone OS and then reboot into recovery??
3.- Should I run any of the Wipes before or after flashing the new Kernel? (Data, Cache, Dalnik or Battery Stats). On the gazillion posts I've read I seem to recall that for Kernel installs the Battery Stats should be wiped, but I might be confused (I have posts overload LOL)
4.- Are there any other considerations that I should take before/after flashing the new Kernel?
Thanks in advance.
In general flashing kernels there is no need to wipe, but just be sure do a backup.

Ok.. what about the version of the Franco Kernel that I should flash (CFS or BFS) for "Devoid Froyo Final" ??

Thanks Master!!!!
May I suggest adding a couple of lines to your Kernel's post mentioning that fact??. It would help n00bs like me and avoid having this question re-posted.
Something like:
CFS for: 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 based ROMs
BFS for: 2.3.X based ROMs
Thanks for all the great work!!!
I read in one of the posts that we don't need to flash the zram initialization zip as its on by default. I have devoid too, but haven't flashed that zip. Should I or should I not?

Some roms include the zram module (e.g. Devoid froyo final) while others don't. Read whether it's included on the roms page.

[Q] How kernel change works on different roms ?

I've been doing this whole "reading" thing about flashing and all that, but some confusion is still there.
I have rooted my newly got SGS2 (i9100, UK).
Now what ? I'm looking at Darky's rom, but there are two files to flash separately: kernel (darkcore1.7) and ROM itself.
1. I was just wondering what is kernel in this situation ? Can i keep my current kernel, which was flashed by superoneclick(2.1.1) or do i absolutely need to flash darkcore ?
2. Same question applies to any other rom out there - can i use different kernel to the rom i may want to flash ? A lot of them come in sets (rom+kernel)
3. Another question - if i mess up kernel flash somehow, does that kill "download mode" of the phone (voldn+pwr)?
I have SGS1 flashed just another day, due to it being "expendable" now that i have SGS2, so jumped in and flashed it following instructions, but without solid understanding. Either stuff gets too complicated or i'm getting too old for this **** (I do have a background of messing with PCs, videogame consoles (ps1 era to ps3/360), winmo6 phones, gadgetry in general...engineer at heart )
You can use any kernel with any ROM. And no I don't think your Download Mode will be gone if you mess up a Kernel.
Kernel don't come in sets. You can choose your favorite there. See Dev section for more details.
Regards.
Correction: SuperCore, not darkcore...
Can i use cwm app (v2.0)to flash any kernels ? Or does it have to be odin ?

Rom>>That depends upon the instructions as always in the rom you choose for a custom rom .
Kernel is flashed via Odin Via CWM app or via CWM recovery .
Kernel is the core of the system between hardware and operating .

Ok, so saying that, What stock Kernel can I use for Cyanogenmod7 ROM?
I was using "XWKE7" previously.
The ZIP file that i downloaded actually replaced my kernel with its own.
I'm asking this as I wanna use Tegrak overclock which is only compatible with stock kernels.

Stock kernels will not work with cyanogenmod. There are no overclockable kernels available for it yet.

[Q] rooting/bootloader

Hi I would like to ask whether rooting the phone is the same as unlocking bootloader. Thanks!
No, it's not.
Rooting allows you to view and edit system files.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install custom (non-official) kernels.
So rooting my phone and unlocking the bootloader is 2 different issue?
Or does rooting my phone actually unlocks my bootloader as well?
Rooting does not unlock bootloader.
Unlocking bootloader can help root your phone (installing a pre-rooted kernel, for example).
Is it then possible to install a custom firmware without unlocking the bootloader or will there be problems if I install a custom firmware without unlocking the bootloader.
These two custom ROMs are the only ones that can be installed without unlocking the bootloader.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578109
OK THANKS! SHALL GO CHECK IT OUT And can I ask, does the phone by itself already have a kernel? If it has, what is the use of installing another one?
Stock ROMs have their stock kernels.
Custom kernels can add some features, such as (for example) the chance to overclock the CPU. Almost every custom ROM needs a custom kernel to work properly.

Wrong. Custom ROMs do not need custom kernel to *function or work properly*.
The custom ROMs are installed at the Read Only Memory of your phone.
For that, you need to use an installer which has to be somewhere outside the Read Only Memory. Only such location on your phone is the kernel. So a custom kernel does nothing but adds an installer outside the Read Only Memory (that is the CWM Recovery).
Now to intall a kernel, you need an installer outside of your Read Only Memory as well as the kernel. That's the PC, and the installer is Flashtool. So, flashtool is used to install custom kernels on your phone.
Note: The two ROMs which can be installed on locked bootloaders are exceptions to this rule.
Thanks,
Rick

If it were like you said, any custom kernel could work with any custom ROM, as long as it has a Recovery to flash the ROM. There are different custom kernels because there are different ROMs, and each custom ROM works only with one or more custom kernels, but not with everyone. If you were right, one single kernel with recovery would be usable for every custom ROM.

Yea. It would be. Infact it is.
However, ROMs like CM9, which are NOT based on the stock ROM will not be able to work on the stock kernel. It will require a kernel which has been designed specifically for CM9. On the other hand, we had seen MiniCMSandwich, which looks like CM, but is based on stock ROM. This will work on any kernel that has a custom recovery. MESA, Rage, X, Stock Exteneded and so on...
So, to put it in other words, suppose you plan to flash an HTC Phone ROM as it came in the HTC device on your Xperia Device. You plan to just change the drivers. You will need a kernel which is designed for the HTC ROM.
But, if you, on the other hand, start with the Xperia ROM and change the aspects of this ROM into the HTC ROM's, you can make the ROM work on any of MESA, X, Rage or extended.
Thanks,
Rick

Stock extended, yeah. Try to run MiniCMSandwich on Gingerbread stock extended kernel. Will it work? Of course not. All the kernels you named are based on stock ICS kernel, so it's simple to run ICS based ROMs on them. This doesn't mean that every kernel with recovery can make them work

Stock GB is to Stock ICS is same as Stock Xperia ICS is to Stock HTC ICS. They are different ROMs. Completely.
The ROMs have instructions according to which it behaves with the kernel. These instructions are all same for kernels that are based on stock ICS. So if you want to try any ROM that is based on stock ICS and such kernel will do.
But CM, GB, HTC ROMs and so on, are completely different.
Say you want to port an HTC ROM to Xperia ICS. You can do the following (I am taking example of the bootanimation file)
1. Simply change the bootanimation.zip file at /system/media of the stock ICS ROM.
So your ROM is based on the stock ROM itself. You just change the files, not the way the files are accessed. You do not even change the way the kernel is accessed. So any kernel based on stock ICS *with recovery* will do.
2. Change the whole Read Only Memory Partition.
This makes all the files replaced, the way HTC has made the ROM. This time you will need a kernel *again with recovery*, built to be accessed by the very specific ROM.
Thanks,
Rick

[Q] Little help flashing to cyanogen

Hey guys.
I just bought a samsung tab 2 10.1 and want to flash it to cyanogen to get the multiple users that comes with android 4.2.x
I havent flashed in a while since i updated my i9100 to 4.1.2, so i thought best to flash my i9100 to cyanogen first to try it out as my phone is already rooted. I found a few guides for installing cyanogen to my phone using cwm recovery to install from the SD card.
I remember rooting my device back when i updated it to 4.1.2 but when i tried to boot into cwm is would boot into the stock android recovery.
so i figured i needed to flash cwm recovery.
after checking all kies processes were stopped i flashed the kernel "GT-I9100_ClockworkMod-Recovery_4.0.1.4" , but the phone would not boot and hang at start screen.. as a plus side i now had access to cwm recovery from boot... ironic.
so i booted into cwm recovery thinking to install cyanogen mod as i thought maybe the rom wasn't compatible with the kernel?
but noticed that the cyanogen rom was not present on the menu in cwm recovery, must of put it in the wrong place. I was now thinking to get my phone to boot into 4.1.2 that should still be on the phone, since the current kernel wasn't working i flashed "Siyah-v5-MCM-i9100-vsync_sysfs-20130217" in hopes it would be compatible.. still no luck with it booting. but i still have access to CWM recovery.
Any thoughts on how i should proceed? if i can get cyanogen onto the SD card should i install it via CWM?
little lost at the moment. been a while since i done all this.
here is the information i noted down before i started today.
4.1.2

Philz kernel lss flash that through odin. Reboot to recovery, do the wipes and and reboot. 4.1.2 should boot up then. Then move custom rom to int sd and flash away. Philz installs custom cwm. Once you have flash custom rom philz will be replaced with stock custom kernel with cwm built in to it.

I'll give it a shot, is the Philz kernel you mentioned this one?;
<< 03.06.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v5.06.1 with CWM 6.0.3.2 based recovery >>
I'm not to sure what kernel version i need.
how would i find out this information ?
Many thanks.
Edit:
I noticed in my previous notes i made when first flashing my phone a year or so ago. The kernel i used was this;
3.0.15-I9100BGLP8-CL317471 [email protected]#3
It is now kernel version;
3.0.31-863787 [email protected] #3 smp preempt thu jan 31 12:20:07 kst 2013
which has no reference to previous kernels. but my current baseband version is: i9100xxls8
LS8 stands out in both... so would using PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSY-ORA-5.10.0.tar.md5 work on my phone?
Lss will work as it for 4.1.2 it just has newer cwm installed.tar is for odin. You could get the zip one and put on an sd card put bk in your phone and flash it like that. Make sure its zip not tar for flashing in cwm.
Thanks

By 'compatible', you mean the kernel works with many ROMs?
Philz is a stock based kernel. So it only works on stock based ROMs, and depends on the android version and the build versions (like LSS, LSJ, LSD etc). Siyah is more compatible, because it only depends on the android version (like JB, ICS or GB).
You had a bootloop before after flashing Siyah mcm kernel, because the mcm kernel supports AOSP 4.2.2 ROMs, not stock JB.

To avoid bootloops after flashing a kernel, use these tips:
1. Flash only kernels supported by your current firmware. Suppose you are running stock JB and you want to flash AOSP 4.2.2 ROM. You might be tempted to flash Siyah mcm kernel (because it supports AOSP 4.2.2). But that would end up in a bootloop as Siyah mcm doesn't support stock JB! :good:
2. Use a kernel cleaning script before flashing any kernels. :good:

Thanks for your reply, i have a few questions to try and understand.
Would i be right in saying;
When im looking to install a new kernel and/or Rom. My check list should be;
1. Kernel to phone compatability. I.e my phone is LS8 so i look for LSS/LSY/LSD soforth and so-on.
2. Kernel to Romcompatability. I.e Philz is a stock kernal hence why it works with 4.1.2 stock Rom.
So if i want to install Resurection Remixed i believe its a modified stock Rom so it should work with Philz?
As would cyanogenmod as it is modified stock?
Or is even that modified to much?
If i want to change both kernel and Rom, would it work if i installed for example siyah kernel then boot into CWM recovery and installed from there a new Rom?
Im looking to try out a few roms on my i9100, mainly Reserection remix, and other cyanogenmod clones with light modification as i enjoy the stock android experiance.
Also looking to install cyanogenmod to my p5100 tab. Flashing Philz p5100 kernal and then installing superuser through recovery and then installing cyanogenmod 10 stable version?
thanks for reading and taking the time to anwser my previous questions.
Many thanks

Don't worry, things can be a bit hard to digest at first.
Let me make it easier:
1. U are currently using a stock or custom ROM, but you want to change the kernel (without any plans to flash a new ROM). In this case, you need to select a kernel that is compatible with your current ROM.
2. U are on a stock ROM, and you need to flash a custom ROM. You want to flash a kernel to root it and install CWM (to enable u to flash a new ROM). In this case also, u should flash a kernel that supports your current stock ROM.
3. U are on a custom ROM, and you want to try another custom ROM (which may require another kernel to support it). In this case, you DON'T need to flash a new kernel that will support ur new ROM. You can flash the new ROM directly. All custom ROMs come with their own supported kernels bundled in the ROM. So, after flashing the new ROM, your current kernel will be REPLACED by a supported one from the new ROM.

So my breakdown would be I'm using a Stock ROM with Philz kernel rooted and CWM. I want to Install Resurrection Remix which is a 4.2.x ROM, Philz is a 4.1.x Kernel so i need to install a new kernel to support Resurrection Remix? or would that come with its own Kernel?

Or is it Firmware version based Kernel updates that happen when you install and new custom ROM?
i.e Running 4.1.x kernel and installing a 4.1.x Custom ROM will update the kernel, but installing a 4.2.x ROM will not?
vice versa Running a 4.2.x kernel and installing a 4.2.x ROM will update the kernel, but installing a 4.1.x ROM will not?

For you i9100 just flash the rom using philz cmw recovery and once its done you will have a custom rom with custom cm kernel which is rooted and has cwm with it. I would say to format system ,data, cache and preload before you flash it using philz recovery and make sure the rom and gapps is on int sd card were you can find it.
As for the tablet make sure philz is compatible with that tablet first!! Dont just flash it on that thinking because its 4.1.2 it will work.
Btw with philz also come with root access too.

Don't overcomplicate stuff mate. When you flash a ROM, the kernel contained in the ROM will be replace your current kernel. Simple.
Thanks a lot!!!
I installed RR to my i9100 and cm10.1 to my p5100.
I'm having a little trouble with i9100 device though, I keep getting random sim locks on the device.. Not sure what could be causing it. It didn't happen on stock 4.1.2.
The devices will be locked and when I wake it I get prompted for the sim lock code. I now have the sim lock on my phone deactivated but I'm fearful that even thought I am not getting prompted for the sim code, the sim could be de-activated while the phone is in sleep thus not connect to the network?
Could be a loss of signal activate a security feature of the sim. Or a problem with the kernel?
Kind regards.
Many many thanks for all your advice into helping me understand a little better.

If you're sim locked, then you want the app 'Galaxsim unlock'. Search for the xda thread, the OP is spocky12 if that helps you find it. It won't be kernel related. And, test it for yourself. See if you get messages /calls / push notifications while your screen is off & phone is sleeping.

The i9100 was originally sim locked, but I paid someone to unlock it, once I got the phone back from him "unlocking" it. It was apparent that he has flashed the device with a new kernel and ROM in order to unlock it... Not to sure of the process. A couple months later I flashed 4.1.2 as it wasn't available as a update on the ROM he installed. The phone re-sim locked and I downloaded the app you mentioned and unlocked the phone successfully, been happily using it up until I installed RR. Now I'm suffering from random pin locks. The phone connects to the network and functions perfectly, apart from said sim locks.
My only fear is missing important calls if this lock is causing network disconnections. Can I log network functions and connectivity to see what's causing it?

[Q] Kernels, ROMs and some qestions about that.

Hello,
I want to install Android 4.4.4 on my good old S3, but I have some questions.
The phone is GT-I9300 with stock kernel 3.0.31 and baseband I9300XXUGNA8 -....... with stock Android 4.3
The smartphone is already root (Super Su 2.1) installed busy box 1.22.1 and I want to install this ROM CM-11-20140914-NIGHTLY-i9300 and Kernel boeffla-kernel-2.3a-CM11.0-i9300.CWM
I've changed the recovery (I have TWRP and CMR)
I want ask about:
1. Is it the good choice of the combination of ROM and kernel and are they compatible with my phone?
2 In my situation with the stock kernel and stock ROM what I have to install first? Kernel and then ROM or vice versa, because I don’t want to BRIC the phone.
3 If something goes wrong is there already an option for unbrick or not?
4.Can I used to change the ROM and Kernel, CyanogenMod Installer and Universal Kernel Flash applications or is better to do it manually in recovery. I see that Odin unable to install custom ROM. Am I right?
5 Is it possible and how I can make a backup of the kernel?
6 What is the connection between the baseband number and the compatibility with the kernel?
Thank you in advance for your advices and I know that all what I do is on my own risk.
I apologize for my English because is not good.
Best Regards

Hello,
I want to install Android 4.4.4 on my good old S3, but I have some questions.

1. Yes, i had both of them for awhile and it worked great for me, pretty good battery (i changed the governor and i/o scheduler though).
2. ROM then kernel, atleast ive always done that. If you flash rom second, the cm stock kernel will be installed and you will have to flash boeffla again.
3. Not too sure about unbricking, sorry. As far as i know, brick means pretty much useless/deadweight.
4. CM installer installs a snapshot for the installer and not the nightly you mentioned along with the cm stock kernel. I always flash manually via CWM recovery but that's my personal choice.
5. To backup the kernel, someone else will know but you could just make a nandroid backup of everything before flashing (recommended anyways).
6. I wouldnt know, sorry.
Hope i helped you, Good Luck!
