HI all,
I have made a short how-to video on how to flash one of the many awesome roms (made by our awesome rom-makers) onto a device that doesn't have a power button. I have done it several times and as the question keeps getting raised, I thought I would show some proof.
Some advice before the video.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGED OR FRIED PDAs
I have done this myself on an I-mate (Himalaya). It took some trial and error but I am now running WM6.1. In my case though, I had to completely remove the power button from the device. The previous owner dropped it on its head, and I got it for free, unfortunately most of the top is missing, including the power button.
SO, on to how I did it. I took a paper clip (metal) and put it about 1cm down, slightly to the right of where the power button used to connect to the motherboard (in line with the text section of the Contact button on the top left of your XDA). Make sure you have turned your XDA/IMATE on before doing this. You'll find that when you find the right area, your device will turn off, or the screen will go dark (like holding the power button for a second or giving it a quick tap) or it will flash on and off.
If you manage to hold it there for the right period of time, while pressing the other bootloader buttons, then you will be able to enter bootloader.
This took me close to an hour to get just right, on both occasions I have done it, but it eventually worked and you eventually get quicker (5 minutes for me now).
My IMATE was useless without me updating the rom, so I had no worry about frying it if I did something wrong, that is why I was OK with playing around with its insides. BEWARE that you MAY DO DAMAGE to the device.
Good luck.
Here is the video.

Cheers! Hope this helps some people out there get the most out of their Himalayas again.

Wow!
I have seen the video but somhow I felt that whatever you wanted to show is not getting properly visible. Perhaps the illumination is not that much.
But, I ould very well see the c_shekhar's bootsplash screen. hehe
Thanks for the Video. Worked a treat! Now I can flash my XDA again. Yeah the video was a little dark but I got the jist of it anyway.
Glad it has helped someone other than me. Someone also left a comment on the YouTube page that it worked for them as well, which is also good. Our Himalaya's will live on for many years to come!!!
I agree with my video being too dark (Environmentally friendly fluorescent lights are good for environment, bad for how-to videos). I will try and make a new, lighter video next time C_Shekhar ports a new rom!
Power button
I'm from the philippines. I was able to have my XDAII power button repaired it didn't cost that much. If there are repair shops in your area, maybe you can ask about it.

There are only two companies in Australia I know of that can officially fix our XDAs. They are bot hin Rockhampton (about 20 hours from where I live in Sydney).
They are both owned by the same company.
As you can imagine, I would predict that the repair cost would be very high, considering they essentially have a monopoly on the situation, and postage costs, insurance etc
I have a qtek 2020 with the key broken (it misses completely) power. can I perform your procedure?
Thanks
Catalogna
Hi there,
It is hard to say for sure. The only way to know for sure is to actually try it. This procedure has worked repeatedly (at least nine times now for me) on my Himalaya, and several other peoples. It really is a last resort though, so you may want to trry everything else you possibly can first.
Cheers.
good good good
I have put the qtek in bootloader and I now have the new rom. Thanks.
I have solo another problem: after few second what I don't use it the display goes to standby and I must press strong to reactivate it. is it a problem software or hardware?
Glad to hear you were able to flash the new rom.
As for the restarting, I have not seen that before under this ROM, and I have used it on several devices and tested it fairly thoroughly. Are you sure nothing is still stuck in the top of your phone where the power button was (IE you didn't leave the metal device in the top?) Perhaps something in there keeps shorting it out?
Maybe it is just on a short timeout. Check under Start>Settings>System>Power>Advanced
See what time the settings are set to under here for "Turn off device if not used for..." both on battery and external power.
Also, then click on the "backlight" button at the bottom, and check those settings.
Under "Backlight" click on "Battery power" and change the settings to what you want, then click on "External Power" and do the same again.
Then just hit the OK button (top right corner) twice, and you should be done.
Hope this helps.
Thanks!
Hi Jadel. I just want to say thanks! Your video help me deal with a broken power button when upgrading rom for the first time. Without your help, I would never feel like having a brand new phone for free
I also found a way to hard reset a phone without camera button (or record).
Just connect mtty via usb into bootloader, type:
password BOOTLOADER
task 28 0 0
and reset your device as normal.
In my try it corrupted my splash screen but anything other is okay
ROMS
Why on the HD2 do they make roms for SPL 1.4 when every FREAKIN PERSON on the PLANET has version 2.08 I have NO IDEA! STUPID!
Flashing rom

Hi to everyone in this forum. I've recently received as a present a new toshiba folio 100, but, since I'm experiencing an annoying menu button flashing, I've thought of it as a software problem so I upgraded the folio using the foliomod1.3c and applied the rotate patch and also the 1.3c fix patch. The menu still flash with no apparent logic. I've tried to kill all applications running and it's still there. It seem to come up and down at random. I ask to all in this forum: do you believe it's a hardware issue or is a software issue? Because if it's a hardware issue I'm going to try to have a new folio from toshiba. I'm overall very pleased with the work that Dexter made to make the folio an usable machine but this flashing is driving me crazy. I use the folio basically as a portable scientific pdf reader so I need to concentrate on what I read and this flashing is really annoying. I would like very much to thank you all in this forum in advance for all the suggestion/help you could provide.

I have a request that serve All those who suffer MENU crazy button .
Is it possible to prepare application you can setting ON/OFF the MENU button
Most of the time useless button.
sometimes button jump after 10 minutes, sometimes after an hour
Usually I fix the problem by changing the settings with FolioButtons 1.1.
If you could add to FolioButtons on/off operation for menu Buttons was the best.
Hi teknoraver,
Can you add enabled/disabled menu button in foliobuttons application ?
flashing on...

I am pretty desperate about this issue, because none of the methods seem to help...
Right now the buttons work opposite- Menu button flashes mad and none of the other 3 responds...dont know how it happened
Just a thought- while the folio is booting up the menu button ALREADY flashes! I have zero understanding in there but isn't it a process that loads / starts early in the line?
I appreciate everyone's effort trying to solve this bug as it makes this handy tool a useless pile of crap.
I was wondering how many folio users are suffering of this crazy buttons madness.
Mine was crazy from the very beginning; I sent it back for repair and toshiba only did a firmware restore... Nothing changed at all!
It makes my folio almost unusable!
bye bye crazy buttons
After two weeks of testing and a complete breakdown of my folio100, I finally find the problem or just crazy buttons and freezing of the screen.
I drag a thickness in the screen in the bottom right corner of the screen to isolate the audio connector and it works better than a miracle again.
The only downside is that the screen comes out slightly from the slot but nothing really bad.
The thickness I put slightly too big or-1.4 mm I'll Demount next week to put a finer and I'll try to take pictures in passing.
Note however that the loss of waranty is innevitable.
Sorry for my bad english ;-)
I think it's a hardware issue and even a build quality issue.
If i hold my folio at the side of the buttons, i get the flashing buttons problem (even the foliobuttons app will not help), if i hold it at the other side, i've got no problems at all.
Do you have an animated background? Because I saw that some people had this issue with an animated background...
Hi Mshr73, nice first post indeed
Could you post some pictures of what you did?

seems to get better...
I really don’t want to be too quick on this, but Dexter’s 1.4 seems to bring relief to this issue - for 2 days I have been running this mod the menu button stopped flashing!!
Any similar impressions on this?

No way pal, I guess I'm in the opposite situation. It still happens to me, and sometimes I think it even got worse... well, I can always look at crazy keys as a "special feature" that no other tablet will have!!!
I just tested without thickness under the screen, with foliomod 1.4 and after a few hours I again the problem of crazy buttons.

Well, I just finished dismantling e reassembling my Folio. Following your hint, I cut a piece of paper and put it between the audio connector and the back of the screen (yes, it was metal vs metal). I'll see whether it's gonna work or not. Crossing fingers for now.
Not that I'm so confident in leaving a piece of paper stuck right where the DC input is .
BTW, did you try with a smaller thickness? Even if this is the problem, I'm wondering whether a piece of paper would be enough or not.
thyself can someone. post pictures of before and after details?
we will be much appreciated
i didn't have the crazy buttons issue this far in 2 weeks, just my home butten needs to be pressed harder. I'm pretty sure it's hardware related, i read often that users experience it when changing from an warm room to a colder one, or in regions where its verry humid(some circuit closes maybe...). so Mshr73 is on the right way as far as i can tell.

Really sorry mate, I hope it will solved this for others too...
Anyhow, it is so disturbing, that I was already considering to send the tablet back to Toshiba...
I'll try to do this weekend if I do not have too many customers. I post the result Monday.

I'm looking forward to your pictures, too... because my trial simply didn't work.
I tried with both a single piece of paper and then with 2 pieces wrapped in tape. I put these spacers between the back of the display and DC/audio connector.
In both cases, the crazy keys phenomenon started to happen after 15-20 minutes of usage.
In most cases, it starts to show when I unlock the device. As soon as I unlock it, home and menu buttons light up with no apparent reason and go crazy for 10-30 seconds.
Then, I even tried to loosen just a little the screws (I read, somewhere in the forum, of a guy who said that he solved his crazy keys and screen lag problems this way). I mean, all screws are now locked but not too tight. Well, I have to say that I don't have any screen lag anymore (I even removed the piece of paper, from the battery area, which used to solve the issue before) but crazy keys still happen. I'm going slightly mad

Well ... with a piece of paper the problem Come back.
I handed a piece of cardboard and the problem disappears.
I think that to raise the screen to solve them but I'm still not 100% sure.
I have my lumia 800 for a week, and now its happening something strange.. When i'm in a call for some time, and i want to end it the phone doesn't let me. Its still responsive, i can go to the start screen, etc.. but the phone call remains on top with the message "ENDING". After a couple of minutes the phone freezs completely and reboot.
Someone had the same problem??
It's not happening always, but it's frustrating... I was having such a pleasant use and then this happens.. and i'm becoming a little sad and worried.
I dont's know if its a problem of hardware, it seems software because doesn't occur always.
Thoughts?

Yes, I also had some similar kind of problems today, i could not answer the call, after they called me about 5 times i could, but then could only speak a few words before the call stopped. Also i saw the call was still running after the caller had hung up. I wanted to retart the phone, but it would not start up again, then i took it loose from the charger , and it beeped and after a while it started up again by itself. After that it worked oke again.
I think they have to look seriously at the software, there is something wrong here i believe.
I've also had this problem of calls not ending on occasion. It seems inconsistent so far though. I'd be interested to hear if this seems to be affecting everyone or if it's only a small number of handsets.
I have the same prb. The screen goes blank and cant end calls. Has to force restart

For all WP7 devices the screen automatically goes blank when you are on a call and the proximity / light sensor detects your head up to the phone. However, if the screen stays off when you move your head away from the phone it means your proximity sensor (or software related to it) is faulty as it still thinks you have the phone to your head.
This happened to my HD7 after a nasty drop on a tiled floor the other day; the sensor was dislodged and permanently was set to the "on" position. I could only end a call by pulling out the battery, unless the other party hung up first. And every time my alarm went off in the morning the screen would remain dark and I would have to press the power button to get at the snooze button (this is because the sensor is telling WP7 that the phone is in a pocket or somesuch, and not to turn on the screen as the alarm could be accidently disabled or snoozed).
I fixed it by dismantling the HD7, resettling the sensors and blowing out as much dust as I could. Has been working fine since! I wouldn't recommend doing the same for your Lumia 800 though...
I dont think it is a proximity sensor issue. In doing tests, the sensor works perfectly for calls if I only have the screen off for a short period of time. If I hold the device up to my face for say 30 seconds, then the device usually freezes up and the screen goes blank, not allowing me to end a call. This makes me believe that it is a software issue that, hopefully, nokia can sort out.
Well i have been quiet on this topic as i wanted to see if the update fixed this problem BUT NO.
Today i made a call and it didnt ring but said connected i then pressed end and nothing it didnt respond infact none of the keys did anything my lumia just froze.
I couldnt even turn it off so i took the sim out and nothing still conected i just had a phone that was frozen with no way out .. so i had a usless lumia all day at work untill the battery died..I HAD NO PHONE ALL DAY !!!
I just hope it was not connected properly or my bill will be huge from t-mobile ..
This has happened a few times befor the update and always always when the signal is quite low it seems ..
But its a joke when im stuck with a usless phone all day ..
NOKIA SORT THIS OUT ITS NOT ACCEPTABLE
Hopefully this is a software issue and we haven't all received a bad batch of lumias with wonky proximity sensors.
Is there absolutely no way of reseting / rebooting the Lumia? you just have to wait for the battery to die??! That seems ludicrous!
i face the same problem many time i reset the phone by pressing power key long.
i find if i was in 3G network this problem some times happen ,so i switch off 3G and now it more than 3 days it never happen
Well to answer that question ...no its happened nine times last week, 3 of those 9 the phone is usless and you have to wait for the battery to die..maybe that's why Nokia gave us a short battery life haha, the other 6 times after about 7 min you can turn it off to reboot and the rest of the phone is responsive .. So 30% of the time when it happens U have no phone :[ even a long press of the power button does nothing
Same problem here... You can restart the phone btw: Hold power button for 10 sec, then release the power button and press it again...
This is a big problem for me, hope a fix comes in fast...
Thanks,
Samo
Im having the same issues here. Other than this its a great phone. Hopefully get it sorted soon.
same problem here, although never had to wait for battery to die.
long hold of power (10sec+) usually reboots the phone.
I keep noticing the problem when changing locations (inside/outside buildings) which is usually connected to switching to 3g - if it happens during a call I am unable to end it with screen being responsive and phone saying that it is ending call (for 30 seconds and more)
contacted Nokia regarding this problem.. they told me to reset my handset.. this is the only option they have... DUMB
same problem here... did someone find any solution?
nopes........

You can hold the power button for 10 seconds, this will trigger a reboot.
I'm relatively often facing the same issues, worth noting is that it does seem to connect the call as I have had customers tell me they heard me grumbling before the call got disconnected (so I gotta be more careful with grumbling )
Happened to me last night, just turned the phone off (power for a few secs then slide down) and on again.
Hi, ive had my Lumia 800 for a week now and must say im loving it. I switched from an iPhone and it was the Metro Interface that did it for me. I got the Lumia 800 but im having the following issues:
Touch Screen Issues
Ive noticed when scrolling around the screen launches things without me clicking. Simply moving my finer over clicks a link on web pages for example. At first i thought it was me and my fat fingers. But then ive noticed that if i press the back button the phone vibrates 2-3 times. If i then press and hold the back button the seems to be pressing it over and over again. Its very strange, If i press really hard it doesnt happen. Anyone else having this problem? Im hoping the recent firmware update resolves this but its not available for me yet.
Camera "PINK" Spot
Ive also noticed that the camera has a "Pink Spot" right on the centre of the screen, Its hard to notice when taking normal picture, but then when i hold up to white background its very clear. Anyone else having this issue.
Battery (resolved)
When i first got the phone my battery performance was very poor. After a full charge i only got 10 hours use. But it got better each day and after 1 week im now getting about 35 hours on general usage. This includes Wifi always on, 1 gmail account using push, bluetooth off, loads of txts and few calls a day.
Anyway, those are my issues, if anyone else has any thoughts on this it would be much appreciated.
Yes the capacitve screen is a bit too sensitive, can probably be fixed in the same way as other phones that have had this issue with software.
Pink spot isnt that bad on here, seems all camera phones suffer from this in certain lighting the iPhone 4 being the worst with its massive blue blob in the middle of photos
I've been lurking here for a while and just registered so I could ask you all for help.
I have a vzw Galaxy S4 (about a year old) running Android 4.2.2 build MI1. It has been dropped in its has UAG case a couple of times but it has never been wet. So there are a few problems, some related some not. 1) I'm having issues with my screen randomly (so it seems) flashing green lines then going black when I wake it from sleep. The soft buttons will stay illuminated, the screen will let me swipe to unlock (I can here confirmation) but the screen stays black. I'll then hit the lock screen button again and it will go black again. The same thing happens if I go to wake the phone via the home button as well. I have a link to a video of it acting up (Two separate occasions, one where the screen just get's a funky green tint and the other where it goes black) but cannot post it since I'm a new member. Let me know if you want me to pm it to you. Does this seem more like a hardware issue or a software/firmware issue?
2) Whenever my headphones are plugged in all I get is garbled sound coming out. No matter what app I'm using or if I'm making a call. I have also noticed that since this started happening, my ear speaker simply will not work (even with the headphones unplugged). Sometimes, when I plugin headphones then unplug them, I will get no audio out of the rear speaker either. This rear speaker issue continues until I reboot the phone.
All of this is driving me nuts and I don't have the cash to replace the phone with anything comparable so I'd like to fix these issues myself if possible. Please let me know if you have ideas/resources that may help me fix this issues. Thanks.
