Samsung Firmware Updates - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here is a noob question
I wonder the reason why Samsung releases the firmware updates country by country. Why don't they push the update once for all regions, like iOS updates? Is there any differences like special optimizations for local carriers, between the firmwares has different Csc?

Mostly carriers need to insert they garbage into it, different countries have different standards, wifi, 3g/4g bands, etc.

So should I wait for Kies updates? I don't own a carrier branded gs2, it's just i9100. Do you recommend me to install eg. Nordic countries firmwares? Unfortunately, we have to wait a lot for Kies updates in Turkey, in spite of Galaxy Note and S series are the most selling here.

Only reason to wait for Kies is you aren't into flashing roms, and have everything you need on current version.
If you wanna update i recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994313.
But remember, always backup your data and do it when you have plenty of time, no one can guarantee it will work flawlessly.

Yeah, I know about that leak. But I've decided to wait for the first Kies version (from any country) of Jellybean because of the lockscreen problem in the leak version.

Yes you will be able to update to ICS, when it will come to you official via an OTA, goodness knows.
It also depends which country code you are on, some codes get updates sooner than others.
Your best bet is to keep an eye on the forums, as it will be posted here when there is an official ICS update out.

Has UK XEU ICS update been released on Kies?

Am I missing something but android central seem to think unbranded UK SGS2 have ICS already.

Put your phone details in CHECKFUS to check servers .
Kies should be banned on this forum .

My Is KI4 and I checked it today but still nothing :-(
update
I have the same XEU but I'm stucked in 2.3.4 since last year, I want to know if it happens to you too...
Same Here :-/
yeah... I paid a crapload of money to get the i9100 as soon as it hit the market in europe, the XEU versions were the first ones to arrive (except some polish ones were available too)... I also went for it because I was expecting that version to be the first to get updates in the future since I'm german and the DBT (free german) updates for the i9000 were always way behind (just like now with the i9100)...
This page said that the 2.3.6 update is waiting for approval for weeks, didn't get it while probably EVERY OTHER COUNTRY got 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 updates... and now it says the XEU ICS update is just "waiting for approval", while those damn branded O2 und THREE versions already got the update... approval my ***...
what the ****?
I mean ok, everything is working just fine, it's not like I really need that udpate, but why the hell are narnia and other countries with 4 or 5 inhabitants getting the ICS udpate first and then even branded ones arrive before unlocked ones, which don't even have to be customized by the providers????
No seriously, what possibly can be the reason to release branded updates first before unbranded ones get rolled out?
I mean the branded ones are based on the original unlocked firmwares, aren't they?
What the **** is Samsung doing?

OTA

You'll probably see that for a loooong time. Your carrier hasn't released any update for your device.
If you want to update, read, study, read some more, then... before anything else... backup EVERYTHING including your EFS FOLDER before you attempt any flashing or updating.
If you do that, you'll save yourself, and everyone who attempts to guide and assist you here in the future, a world of trouble.
Learning how to backup your EFS folder is more important than anything else you do (if you want to have an actual phone and not just a $700 media player, that is).
BTW, you are new, but questions are posted in the Q&A section. You posted in General. This will probably be moved.
Probably there's no new update available in your region or your phone is branded.

try using kies, had the same "issue"
With my baseband version under which region do I fall because I bought it from a Samsung shop in ghana..

just download samsung kies and check for updates, if kies says there are no updates wait a bit more, cause that's a carrier issue
Again baseband is not your firmware version.

My unbranded phone has never been able to get OTA updates for some reason, I have always had to use kies, I get this message when there is an update.
Happens every time I try and haven't been able to solve it.

As per multiple posts and answers .
You are in a queue wait .
Why anyone joins XDA Developers forum to use Samsung updates services is beyond my understanding .

HELP! Galaxy S3 update - How?

I'm new to the site so please excuse my potential ignorance if this has been previously answered or if I missed anything.
So, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 i9305. It was originally on T-Mobile UK but was completely unbranded so on startup doesn't show t-mobile, no network bloatware etc... and I have since had it unlocked (via unlock code, not root)
Waiting for the premium suite update has prompted me to wonder... as I am unlocked am I still governed by t-mobiles wait times to release the update (I actually use a voda SIM in it)? Or as its unlocked/unbranded should I effectively be at the front of the queue as it wereand receive it with other unlocked handsets? Or will I not get it at all as I'm not using a t-mobile SIM?
I'm becoming very impatient waiting for the update as got rid of my note ii in anticipation for the s3 receiving the update. Which after giving more thought to I'm not even sure if I will receive as I have the i9305 rather than the i9300 and they didn't really say specifically who the update was for?
I am on the cusp of rooting just so that I can add the premium suite on the Rom but have limited experience in rooting (only done it a couple of times) worried that I'll miss something and wont be able to return it to stock once the upgrade becomes available via kies as there are so many different guides/roms/software
Appreciate your thoughts

Don't quote me but I don't think it matters what SIM you have in, you should still see the update when it rolls out to that model number.. so long as your not rooted.

Check this live update every once in a while till your country receives the update and then start to panic

Update has nothing to do with locked or unlocked .
You get the TMobile update for your phone .
Or join XDA and flash a stock rom .

Thanks for the info so far. Can someone tell me if I need to do something specific to ensure I can restore to its original non rooted state in the future as I can't wait for the update anymore.
The update is out in the UK but I haven't received it yet

[Question] Why do we have different firmware for each country?

Hi guys I'm just curious why samsung is doing this? We know that we can flash using other countries rom using odin and it works fine. Why do they need to release official update by each country if we can use any countries rom?

Just to let you know that as long as the Rom/Firmware is for the the I9300 then you can flash it to your device no matter what country it is for.
So for example if the official firmware was for Poland and your device was in the UK then you can flash it.
Hope this clears things up for you.

So that each country has a reason to withhold your warranty if you're found to run a firmware version they don't associate themselves with. I mean, when I had my Gnex, I ran a british firmware on a nordic phone, with a US modem and all worked superbly.
On this GS3, I've run everything from Russian to Egyptian and my phone has never once failed me.

But still, for example, they can have 1 official rom to all unbranded I9300 instead of releasing one by one for each country... This will be less stressful for them and for us (always waiting for an official release for our country)
I wonder what is really their reason...
" Why do we have different firmware for each country?"
Because your phone / provider relationship is country specific (I use an SGS3 i9300 on a T-Mobile UK contract for example) providers (try to) ensure phone / provider / country specific set-ups.
They justify this on the grounds of providing tailored maintenance and support based on known and controlled configurations.
....it works for the masses....not for us more troublesome and independent minded users in the XDA and other communities
