Having an issue where after boot and sometimes all of the sudden during the day, the phone gets hot and battery level drops l like ton of bricks. Using Android Task Manager App and enabling monitor of system processes and selecting realtime monitor, I've traced the problems to "android.process.media". This appears to be something to do with Android scanning the device for media files (audio/video/etc) and creating some sort of database. I also usually see the "Music Enhancer" process which has to do with Beats Audio according to HTC (but I have Beats turned off.)
I've seen old threads of people with same problem and in some cases it had to do with a "corrupted" media file and they had to remove all media files and/or factory reset their device. I just spent an entire weekend customizing this device! Plus, how the heck do you prevent yourself from copying the corrupted file over if it was a corrupted mp3 or something?
I'm pretty sure my issue stems from the fact I used my media manager (Media Monkey) to sync over 2,800 audio files to the device. My collection is of high bitrate quality, about 16GB worth of music. I'm pretty sure this is what it is choking on. What I'm not sure of is if the Media Scan the Android device is performing is just a "normal check" for changes/addition/deletions to any of the media files. This of course would take a lot of time and CPU if it has to scan 2,800 files every reboot or periodically. It seems launching Google Play sometimes starts it too as I also sometimes see Google Play Service:Music or something like that (even though I don't stream any of my audio from Google Play.)
I'm expecting this is a more widespread issue than people know. I think in many cases it could be at the root of many people's battery issues on Jelly Bean phones, especially if they have a lot of media files.
If anyone has any recommendations as to what I should do or more information about this, please let us know!
Using a brand new HTC One X+ (AT&T). JB 4.1.1.

When I look at my battery statistics, it shows an app called mediaserver using most of my battery. What its this app?

I'd like to know as well. I've had this problem before and could only solve it after reflashing a new rom.

so.... that means you have to put the motorola back to factory setting for mediaserver not to show?
I think its a program that associates with the media player in your motorola to use DNLA, honestly i'm trying to disable it as well, before i use to get like 9 hours on my motorola, then i started loading widgets and other apps and now its down to 4 hours.
Unacceptable.
ProSyst MediaServer is a DLNA Media Server for devices featuring the Android platform. Using MediaServer, pictures & videos taken with your phone as well as audio files can be played back on your home media appliances like TVs, picture frames, Sony PlayStation 3, etc. Without the need to plug any cables nor to configure any network settings, your home media devices will discover your Android phone automatically once the device is on WiFi and the MediaServer is turned on.
http://www.prosyst.com/media/MediaServer/MediaServer-Docu.html has instructions on how to disable.
ya google search
I am also having this problem of faster battery drain because of "mediaserver".
Anyone know how to fix this?
Anyone please?
Are you listening to music or anything?
I have mediaserver usage when using my bluetooth headset for music. I think it runs anytime you are playing media, possibly only when you are streaming from your phone to a wireless device.
<edit> After 3 hours of playing music through bluetooth today I have only 2.9% mediaserver usage with 10% battery depletion total in the last 6 hours. If you are seeing a huge number, then something is wrong.
Vague solution:
Freeze DLNA through Titanium Backup PRO or any other app that allows freezing of apps.
Cheers!
Hey guys, I posted this over at Android Forums and, of course, I should have done so here first. I'm having a problem with the QUALITY of streaming audio, as described below. I'm hoping you guys can find a solution--this is the only thing I don't like about the MoPho
----- BEGIN SNIP -----
Hey, guys, I'm having a strange problem with streaming audio which I'd really appreciate if someone could confirm and perhaps help me troubleshoot. I'm certain this is a MoPho specific issue--I'll explain why below...
BACKGROUND:
I am a "feed provider"--I put a police scanner online through radioreference.com which monitors Indianapolis (Marion Co, Indiana) police agencies' dispatch channels. It's a digital system which is difficult to monitor; it requires an expensive radio, ideally located and programmed correctly. At any given time, from a handful to dozens (or more) people listen online via PC's, Macs, and SmartPhones of all manner and description.
I use the paid version of a free app, Scanner Radio by Gordon Edwards, (which I'm sure many of you use--it's a great app) to enjoy and keep tabs on my feed. A couple of days ago, my audio went to hell on the MoPho. I'm hearing brief, spurious bursts of noise during both periods of silence and during transmissions. These can occur from a few seconds to a minute or more apart. I hear these same problems using Wunder Radio to monitor my feed.
I also hear a different problem when monitoring NOAA weather broadcasts using both apps. It manifests itself a bit differently, but I'm convinced it's the same basic issue. On those broadcasts, it seems that the audio might be playing a very slight bit too slowly, and "catches up" via an intermittent, steady, cyclic, nearly instantaneous "skip". It sounds something like this...
"In Indianlis, at eight PM the temperature was eighty-en degrees, and the relative humidity was seventy-two peent" with no pauses--the audio is continuous.
SOLUTIONS I'VE TRIED:
1. Confirmed problem is MoPho specific by monitoring same sources with same apps on a Galaxy Tab. Everything sounded fine.
2. Changed DNS server and Port Addresses to 0,0,0,0 and 0, respectively. No improvement noted.
3. Factory-reset MoPho. Installed just Scanner Radio Pro. Problem was still present.
4. Have tried wi-fi, 3G, and 4G. Problem exists in all cases.
5. Scanner Radio (free and pro both) have an option to stream via their own built-in player or the native Android media player. Problem exists using both.
CONCLUSION:
If anyone wants to have a go at this, my specific feed can be found in Scanner Radio at Browse, Browse by area, United States, Indiana, Marion County, Marion County Police Dispatch. I'm at a loss--I'm confounded and I hope someone can help me work this out.

Here's a link to the thread where potential issues have been discussed. I've tried several things, including installing the leaked update (no problems there, thanks guys!) but the problems remain. Many thanks in advance for any help you all can give.

It's almost like some sort of a buffering issue...
I do believe I'm "hot on the trail" of this problem... From ScannerCast's configuration and usage page:
"Playback Using RealPlayer Results In Periodic Noise
If you play back a stream created by ScannerCast using any version of RealPlayer, the resulting audio will contain periodic pops, clicks, screeches, and noise. This happens whether you directly listen to a ScannerCast stream, or you listen to a stream created by ScannerCast that's being relayed through a SHOUTcast/Icecast server.
This problem occurs because RealPlayer incorrectly handles the SHOUTcast metadata interval parameter, causing it to attempt to decode the metadata as MP3 audio data. This bug was first reported to the RealPlayer developers in 2005, and applies to any SHOUTcast or Icecast stream that doesn't use the default metadata interval of 16K. Real Networks (the for-profit company that owns RealPlayer) hasn't fixed the bug in all these years, and my attempts to report this problem to the RealPlayer developers, or at least hear their side of the story, received no reply.
While ScannerCast could be changed to use the default metadata interval, that would seriously degrade tag/audio synchronization. I have no plans to change the way ScannerCast works to make it work with a third-rate, broken, media player."
Sound familiar???

Why does this affect you? Our default media player isn't RealPlayer. Or you saying that's what you've been using? Sorry...confused, hoping to see you resolve this tho...good luck!
No, but I believe the in app player for Scanner Radio and teh Andriod player as implemented in the MoPho have an identical (or very similar) problem. I won't rest until I get to the bottom of this or my 30 days is up, whichever comes first.

Ah...gotcha. Have you tried using alternate players then? Seems there's a few that support feeds in the market. Double Twist? Doggcatcher

I would also be willing to wager that the stream that is used is Shoutcast...as this was the same problem with the MLB app and moto phones. When you switch the alternate audio for streaming MLB games in app instead of the Shoutcast method the problem goes away.
SOLVED (Workaround)
SOLVED:
Apparently, Motorola phones don't like 16kbps mono audio streams. I set up alternative broadcasting software and changed my feed to 32kbps stereo, and the feed plays well with the in-app (Scanner Radio) player--not so well with the Android player. The feed is now listenable, and I hipe this helps people (even if they hadn't experienced the problem--yet...).

Nice TB...glad you figured it out!!
Hi community.
I have Asus TF101 running on rooted 3.2.1, Revolver 3.11 ROM.
Here's situation:
I've installed from mobile market a game named Blood&Glory. It downloaded additional files, game start ok, I've played for few minutes and quit it. Later, I've decided to run it again but can't find it in installed apps. Mobile market's "My apps" also do not have it in list as if I haven't installed it ever. But web market do says that I have it installed. It was yesterday.
Today, I was going to watch some movie on my TF101, so I plugged earbuds and surprise! I was hearing music from that Blood&Glory game intro! Interesting thing is that when I plugged out earbuds, music stops playing - I can't hear it on internal speakers, but when I plug them back - I can hear various game tracks changing each other. Furthermore, it not shown in running process list. I've rebooted device and odd behavior seem disappear. I have to mention, I switched device off for night, so it feels like this game loaded when I plugged in earbuds.
I am very confused and concerned about it. Please advise how can I get rid of this nasty thing?
just format your phone.

It's a tablet. Maybe try to discover the game file name and search over /data for anything about the app, over /cache too, and maybe on the rest of the device (/sdcard and whatever is called the internal memory for media and such in devices with huge internal memory).
Hi all, within the last year I've been using my first smartphone, and with that recently have been able to expand the memory, and load a large portion of my music collection in flac format. I'm using Foobar 1.0.94; installing any later version just gives me the message that this software is not compatible with android.
-----small side note----
I want to update to a newer version of the android system, which apparently is 8.1. I've successfully downloaded the update, which has taken about a month, because where I live has little wi fi connectivity. I was wanting to back the update file up first, before installing, but apparently asking about the location where the file has downloaded to was enough to get me booted off the Lenovo help forum. I would have liked to back the file up, just incase of any problems or corruption issues. This is just explaining why I'm still on android 7.11.
-----back on topic-----
But now my main question is trying to find a music player or DSP plugin for foobar that can crossfades songs properly. I've tried a number of programs, but they ALL crossfade as in introducing a fade both at the end of the song, and the start of the next. So in other words, the beginning of any track is never a hard start. It always fades in, and the first few seconds of the song is missing.
Idealistically I would like the song to fade off naturally as it does from the album, and at a given db point, the player would trigger the next track without any fades; just playing normally.
I thought this would have been relatively simple, but I'm trying to find something that would start the next song at the point in which the previous song's ending falls below a nominated threshold level, such -33db, and then start the next song WITHOUT killing the residual of the previous song's fade that would still be taking place underneath.
They are players out there that come close, but all stubbornly fade the intro of the new song in regardless. Below are my system specs, hoping someone please could forward any recommendations.
Thanks from wintery sydney.

Hi,
I have been using my Nexus 7 (2012) in my car as a satnav and for listening to music by plugging it into the radio usb input. It played music fine using Google play but it's a bit slow now for the satnav bit so I bought an M5 tablet.
Satnav app works ok but getting the music to play is not so good.
With the Nexus I would connect it to the radio with a usb cable, switch on the radio, select usb, open Google play, select the album, select play and off it went....easy. Not the same with the M5, after opening google play I'm asked to select connection mode, charging, MIDI, transfer files, transfer photos. If I select any option other than charging it reverts after a couple of seconds to charging and occasionally plays the music after about 20 seconds (missing this part of the album). If I pause or stop then it'll occasionally stop or just continue.
If the Nexus can do all this well then surely the M5 can, am I doing something wrong.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Cheers
Ron
Is your screen on when music cuts out?
Not sure about USB - but via bluetooth, EMUI devices have issues with background music playback. Your screen needs to be on and your music player needs to be in the foreground. Otherwise, EMUI situationally (I think it depends on the msuic player app and available RAM and other things) kills bluetooth/media processes in the name of battery optimization. Music playback behavior becomes as you describe. It's usually fixed temporarily by toggling bluetooth on and off a couple times, or it's fixed permanently by freezing the Power Genius app (with root).
That's not necessarily your problem - but just saying...
Thanks,
I've been through all the settings (I think) but no change, it's pretty rubbish really that a 6 year old tablet outperforms the M5 on a feature that you would imagine should get better integrated into a more modern device. The M5 may have some good features but there are some aspects that are difficult to live with and ultimately i'll probably return it.
Cheers
Ron
I think it's the Android version that is ``causing`` this, not the Mediapad M5
Hi,
Thanks, that's interesting, do I understand that you think that it's a feature (or glitch) in Android 8 and therefore all devices (all makes) running this version will be experiencing the same? It would be hard to believe that this version would be released without testing to see whether such a common use for these devices would work as they have for many years!
I'm really looking for a fix/work around.
Cheers
Ron
