You keep the recovery. You have to wipe all except SD though and make sure your ur ROM is compatible with the ROM your currently running.

recovery is wiped when you run an RUU (or a PG86IMG file which contains the stock recovery).
basically it depends which method you use to s-off. Wire trick doesnt touch recovery. But if you are attempting a downgrade method which involves running an RUU you will lose 4EXT recovery. But its pretty easy to flash 4EXT again. just a single command in cmd ( or just install their app and let it do it for you)

Wire trick is the best way to downgrade and it's really easy. I recommend you giving it a try.

Confused. No root but soff hboot 1.5

Hey guys. A while back my phone got screwed up I had to flash the ruu to get it going again. Originally I was on hboot 1.4 rooted/s off via revoked. After I updated with the ruu for the newer radio it now has hboot 1.5 but still says s off. I wasn't able to flash a Rom via clockwork or twrp. So I have a stock Rom without root and I can't figure out where to go from here.
Any ideas?

don't know for sure but IMO you will have to unlock via HTC dev.com, then you will be able to flash anything like you did before . And to root your ROM, just flash a zip file containing superuser apk and binary after doing the above steps.
Also you can revert back to hboot 1.4 ( don't know how exactly ) but don't follow the downgrade thread by unknownforce as you are already s-off
S-Off supercedes being locked. You should still be able to flash roms and have superuser. I was on unlocked on 1.4 with s-off and went to 1.5 showing locked but with s-off and everything still flashes and superuser works fine.
s-off should allow you to do as you please with your phone.. you should still be able to flash w/e recovery you want and w/e rom you want w/o fastboot into recovery..
having s-on in 1.5 is a pain.. but if you already have s-off.. you can just as easily flash back down to 1.4 or even to 1.04 the eng hboot..
but once you're s-off, which you already are, you can do as you please with your device.. you don't need htc dev for it..
EDIT: you might just have to reflash your recovery.. use fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and then boot into it... recovery.img has to be in the same folder as your adb and fastboot files..

[Q] Get S-Off after Installing Dumlock?

Device: HTC Evo LTE
HBOOT 1.12
Security: S-ON
Rooted
Recovery: TWRP 2.2.1
Dumlock IS installed
I would like to get S-OFF on my phone (since I’m still on the old HBOOT 1.12 that can be S-OFF’d), but I’ve already gone through the process of installing Dumlock via TWRP.
Do I have to do anything to “uninstall” Dumlock before I try using LazyPanda to get S-OFF. I don’t know if LazyPanda will get hung up or brick because of Dumlock
Thanks for any help you can give me.

just make sure you have a 1.13 based rom on your phone, i did mine with fresh rom 5.1.1. all dumlock does ( i believe) is allow to to install a kernel if your s-on. but also b/c your on hboot 1.12 even if your s-on you can install a kernel, rom and radio update from the recovery. you just cant update the PRI or use the full firmware package

ok, that makes sense.
I guess it's not a big deal to keep it on there, but in general, is there a way to remove Dumlock?

Recovery Problem

Thanks for taking the time. I've been working at fixing this for hours now, and to no avail. I was following the instructions found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808332&highlight=reboot) ...but the short of it was I was upgrading my Hboot so that I could flash a JB ROM. Here's where the problem is, I have no recovery. When I try to access my 4EXT from fastboot, it shows a picture of a phone lying down with the app update symbol (an arrow pointing down with two or three, cant remember right now, around it) over it. Then after a short while it is replaced by a picture of a phone with an exclamation in a triangle. When I try to load a new recovery with SDK it says FAILED (remote: not allowed). I also tried loading back to Hboot 1.50, still nothing. If it matters, my phone came with 1.50.
I greatly appreciate any advice. Here's my current setup.
CDMA Evo 3d
Hboot 1.58 locked S-OFF
Radio 1.09.00.0706
Software 2.89.651.2 710RD
I would download the zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
Then lock the bootloader in fastboot using fastboot oem lock. Run the ruu.exe to put your phone at stock (you'll still be s-off). Hopefully phone will boot.
You would then flash whichever hboot and recovery you want and flash a ROM.
No worries, all the stock hboots (if not unlocked using htcdev) won't allow you to use fast boot to flash recovery/boot partition even though you are s-off.
You can use a custom hboot like revolutionary / juopunutbears / eng hboot to use those commands. To flash another hboot, and just download the respective PG86IMG.zip and put it on the root of sdcard.
OR
If you current ROM is rooted, go to 4ext.net and download the free version and use it to install 4ext recovery on your phone or use flash image gui by joeykrim to flash recovery.
Those two apps will work on any hboot but your ROM should be rooted.
Hope this helps...
How did I know Coal would come to my rescue. Well after more work, and your great advice, I got it working again. The trick was I needed a JBear Hboot zip. Thanks again Coal, you are a legend.
Edit: Thanks mnomaanw, we posted that at the same time hahaha.

[Q] Get bootloader unlocked and I already have S-OFF

Hey! A while ago I rooted my phone using the revolutionary method. Later I reverted back to stock and locked the bootloader. However the S-OFF remained. A few minutes ago I had 1.53 HBOOT and ICS stock. But now I got HBOOT 1.49.0007 and I wanna use revolutionary tool to unlock bootloader yet again. But now it gives me an error saying, "Failed to get root! "
Is there another way to get rooted WITHOUT using the HTC method since I already got S-OFF and 1.49.0007 HBOOT? I don't feel comfortable using HTC's method....

I think the "Failed to get root!" message is because HTC patched the tacoroot exploit in the ICS builds that was being used for temp root with the GB builds.
Why do you want to unlock the bootloader? If you want to run the additional fastboot commands you should be able to just flash the JBear version of the current bootloader, or does that cause problems on the GSM model?

Since you are S-OFF you can flash whatever bootloader you want. I don't know revolutionary method, I was using jbear to get S-OFF. After S-OFF i flashed RUU and I was on stock 1.53.007 locked bootloader with S-OFF and i couldn't root my phone. I've flashed hboot from this site:
http://unlimited.io/jbhboots.htm
There you have 2 versions of GSM Evo 3d hboots. After that you can do everything with your phone. Good luck!

I contacted unlimited.io's support in the IRC and downloaded the ICS HBOOT - 1.53.5353 and flashed that. Now it seemes to work!
Anyway, thanks for your answer! If they wouldn't have responded then you would have been my savior!
Okay, problem number two.... I have flashed CWM now and I installed Super User inside recovery mode but I don't get root access? I downloaded the signed package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991929
Any ideas?
I have tried to repair premissions after the install of Super User. I have also updates Super User from Market after Install due to force close after the fresh install from CWM

Follow method B (steps 1 to 14 if you want to be on rooted stock) and it should be ok. If I remember correctly, there is a 4ext recovery to download, maybe try this one. Good luck!

Stuck at bootloop after installing Viper3D rom

My phone gets stuck at bootloop after installing Viper3D. I did a ssytem wipe and installed the rom. Am I missing any steps like formating cache/dalvik? Rather, what are the correct steps since I can't seem to find any. My phone has hboot 1.5, unlocked, s-on, CWM 4.0.1.4

Couple things..
You need to be on hboot 1.58. You can do this by running the 2.89 RUU.
It will also help to get s-off and there's a complete guide on how to do this Here.
if I follow those instructions, would i be able to install the CyanogenMod 10.1? According to the thread, it says i must NOT have hboot 1.58 but I will gain that if I follow those instructions.
i followed the down and dirty instructions and was able to root my phone, have hboot 1.58, and have S-Off. Installed Viper3D with success. Thanks for the help.
Now my next question is...how do you down grade hboot 1.58 to 1.50?

Install the supported Hboot in the bootloader, which is 1.40 I believe.
simply rename the file to PG86IMG and put it in the root of your Sd card.
here is a list of the hboots
