My phone gets stuck at bootloop after installing Viper3D. I did a ssytem wipe and installed the rom. Am I missing any steps like formating cache/dalvik? Rather, what are the correct steps since I can't seem to find any. My phone has hboot 1.5, unlocked, s-on, CWM 4.0.1.4

Couple things..
You need to be on hboot 1.58. You can do this by running the 2.89 RUU.
It will also help to get s-off and there's a complete guide on how to do this Here.
if I follow those instructions, would i be able to install the CyanogenMod 10.1? According to the thread, it says i must NOT have hboot 1.58 but I will gain that if I follow those instructions.
i followed the down and dirty instructions and was able to root my phone, have hboot 1.58, and have S-Off. Installed Viper3D with success. Thanks for the help.
Now my next question is...how do you down grade hboot 1.58 to 1.50?

Install the supported Hboot in the bootloader, which is 1.40 I believe.
simply rename the file to PG86IMG and put it in the root of your Sd card.
here is a list of the hboots

I seem to be in an unusual state with my phone. I downgraded to hboot 1.4 with the software downgrade method, but I can't seem to get root or s-off now. I've tried revolutionary, and it says failed to get root (as I'd expect since I don't think it was made for 2.17) and I found and ran ControlBear, and it says I need root (I think ControlBear is for the wire s-off though). I can't seem to find any steps here though, and would appreciate any advice on where to go now. What step am I missing? I want to get root, and clockwork so I can install a custom rom or two.
Or would this belong in the Q&A thread?

you have to be htc unlocked with a stock rooted rom to run controlbear
But, I have hboot 1.4, would I be able to downgrade to 2.08?

Yes I think, when I followed unknownforce's guide to downgrade there was a step to run the 1.13 RUU.EXE ( version b4 2.08) and then use revolutionary...so the phone will have hboot 1.4 and software vertion 1.13....
Hello, I've been helping my friend install a custom ROM on his Virgin Mobile Evo 3D and have been running into roadblock after roadblock. Did a good amount of reading and searching and want to make sure I'm going in the right direction.
First some important numbers:
HBoot: 1.57
Build #: 1.13.652.2_R2 CL372137
S-On
Using HTCDev we were able to successfully unlock the bootloader and installed 4Ext Recovery RC5 (TWRP 2.3.1 / 1.1.1 did not work).
Using 4Ext Recovery we enabled SmartFlash (through Tools menu) and attempted to install various ROMs (Paranoid Android 2.99 (4.1.2), Unofficial AOKP v3.2 (4.1.2)) without success. The ROMs install, but bootloops on the HTC logo.
I have read that S-Off is the preferred method as it maximizes compatibility and convenience. So following this guide, we are going to run the RUU to try again.
Can anyone who's been down this road give us some tips? I thought we were homefree after we got the recovery installed, but I guess there's still more work to be done.

Your problem with the AOSP based ROM's is that you need to downgrade your bootloader to something below 1.57 and need S-OFF to do that. Once you have achieved S-OFF and downgraded the hboot you should be fine.
ramjet73
Thanks ramjet for the tip. Any recommended link to instructions for downgrading to 1.50?
I am currently running:
JuopunutBear
Shooter XC SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT - 1.57.5757
Thanks,
Tymnus

Here's a post that should help. The hboot files linked from that guide will work on the Evo 3D and the Evo V 4G.
ramjet73
Perfect. I was able to downgrade to 1.50 and then install the Paranoid ROM. Now to figure out why it won't get past the boot screen! It's stayed there for over 10 minutes.
Onward!

Did you "format all partitions except SD card" in 4EXT right before flashing the ROM? That works for most users.

Thank you for the reply, that is what I surmised- even though I read the custom ROMs' OP for mention of HBOOT (most of the time it was claimed that 1.58 is incompatible, and/or 1.50 or below is needed).
1.57 + S-Off seems to be a difficult combination, per your guide the best way to achieve this is with the wire trick? You have a very good guide, definitely appreciate all the time and effort you've put in.
Ramjet, actually, I went in and wiped to factory settings after installing the Paranoid ROM. Then in booted just fine. However... the Google Apps packet is really flakey. Off to hunt for answers about why there are so many FC issues. I may just switch back to the ROM that you created. That was much more dependable! Thank you for your support!!!

Change your bootloader (hboot) to something lower that 1.57 and it should work.
My recommendation is the JBear 1.50.5050 version.

So if I downgrade the hboot then any ROM will install? Trying to install an AOKP rom.
I have an Evo 3d with Virgin Mobile and I desperately want CyanogenMod 10.1
I am rooted, s-off, unlocked, and on hboot 1.57. To flash CM 10.1, you must be on an hboot version lower than 1.57. Is there a way to downgrade my hboot without reverting to s-on? because every link I find warns that you must be s-on, or you will irreversibly brick your phone.
I tried putting the PG86IMG.zip file with hboot 1.40 on my sd card and rebooting into bootloader, but I get an error message (see attached picture)
Please help, and Thank you in advance.

I'm on Sprint and by all means I'm no expert. I followed ramjet73's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
and was able to switch between hboot's version. Download QADERSO-V2-VM.zip and unpack to C drive. Install HTCDriver3.0.0.007 then open command prompt and do "cd C:\QADERSO\Root"
Then follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32259533&postcount=60

Thanks for the reply. I tried that method too and it didn't give me an error message, but when I booted into bootloader it still showed 1.57. Do you remember if you were locked when you downgraded? I think I read somewhere that you had to be but I don't really want to try it because relocking my phone will wipe everything.
And thanks again

I'm not sure where you got the hboot you are trying to flash but it looks like it's only setup for the Sprint CID and not Virgin Mobile.
Since you are already S-OFF you can follow the procedure in this guide and the hboots linked from that post are setup for both Sprint and VM CID's.

You have 2 choice to s-off.
Unknownforce's hboot downgrade, then revolutionary s-off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653777
Or
JuopunutBear S-OFF*
http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear.htm
I've only done Unknown's. That I can help with

JuopunutBear S-OFF possible with yoda's ics ??? my evo is GSM
as they says they only support stock rom...
??
I think it might, not sure how JuopunutBear s-off works. You will need to test and find out.
Juoponutbear after boot don't found any drivers on yoda's ics, so doesn't works.
It should work on Yodas ics, do you have all drivers (fastboot, adb) properly installed?
Sent from my Evo 3D.
Yes, of course. Tried on Win 8; Win 7 and XP. Without changes. All going fine, when phone boots with Juopunut boot image, computer saw phone only like mass storage device, not adb, not fastboot. But before all was working - adb commands, fastboot flash and reboot commands.
EDITED: I think there are need something else drivers, but I don't know directly whitch ones.
