Custom ROM Trouble (Virgin Mobile) - HTC EVO 3D

Hello, I've been helping my friend install a custom ROM on his Virgin Mobile Evo 3D and have been running into roadblock after roadblock. Did a good amount of reading and searching and want to make sure I'm going in the right direction.
First some important numbers:
HBoot: 1.57
Build #: 1.13.652.2_R2 CL372137
S-On
Using HTCDev we were able to successfully unlock the bootloader and installed 4Ext Recovery RC5 (TWRP 2.3.1 / 1.1.1 did not work).
Using 4Ext Recovery we enabled SmartFlash (through Tools menu) and attempted to install various ROMs (Paranoid Android 2.99 (4.1.2), Unofficial AOKP v3.2 (4.1.2)) without success. The ROMs install, but bootloops on the HTC logo.
I have read that S-Off is the preferred method as it maximizes compatibility and convenience. So following this guide, we are going to run the RUU to try again.
Can anyone who's been down this road give us some tips? I thought we were homefree after we got the recovery installed, but I guess there's still more work to be done.

Your problem with the AOSP based ROM's is that you need to downgrade your bootloader to something below 1.57 and need S-OFF to do that. Once you have achieved S-OFF and downgraded the hboot you should be fine.
ramjet73

Thanks ramjet for the tip. Any recommended link to instructions for downgrading to 1.50?
I am currently running:
JuopunutBear
Shooter XC SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT - 1.57.5757
Thanks,
Tymnus

Here's a post that should help. The hboot files linked from that guide will work on the Evo 3D and the Evo V 4G.
ramjet73

Perfect. I was able to downgrade to 1.50 and then install the Paranoid ROM. Now to figure out why it won't get past the boot screen! It's stayed there for over 10 minutes.
Onward!

Did you "format all partitions except SD card" in 4EXT right before flashing the ROM? That works for most users.

Thank you for the reply, that is what I surmised- even though I read the custom ROMs' OP for mention of HBOOT (most of the time it was claimed that 1.58 is incompatible, and/or 1.50 or below is needed).
1.57 + S-Off seems to be a difficult combination, per your guide the best way to achieve this is with the wire trick? You have a very good guide, definitely appreciate all the time and effort you've put in.

Ramjet, actually, I went in and wiped to factory settings after installing the Paranoid ROM. Then in booted just fine. However... the Google Apps packet is really flakey. Off to hunt for answers about why there are so many FC issues. I may just switch back to the ROM that you created. That was much more dependable! Thank you for your support!!!

[Q] Question on getting the bootloader unlocked after upgrading the Hboot to 1.58?

I was wondering if there was a way to get an unlocked bootloader without using HTCDev.com while I'm on 1.58 Hboot?
I upgraded using Virus's PC86IMG.zip file from his thread, and that upgraded the radio's and hboot (and other stuff I'm assuming).
or do all of the methods involve downgrading the hboot while unlocking?

Sort of.
If you are S-OFF you can flash one of the custom bootloaders from this post and it will support the same fastboot commands that an unlocked stock bootloader supports. Technically your bootloader status is still "***LOCKED***" and if you reflash the stock bootloader it will show that, but the custom bootloaders ignore that status and support the additional fastboot commands.
Since you are currently using 1.58, I recommend the JuopunutBear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) version since you will probably need that for the ROM you are currently running. Just be aware that version doesn't get along well with GB and AOSP ROM's.

ok, thanks ramjet.
Just so I am clear, I won't be running a GB or AOSP rom. I have been using TribulattiFather's Roms (SolidRom Family). So I should be good with JuopunutBear's Sprint ICS 1.58.5858.
If I plan on running a AOSP rom down the line somewhere, I should just follow the downgrade hboot guides that are listed in these forums? or is running the JuopunutBear's HBoot not allowing downgrades?
Thanks again for the info, it is greatly appriciated.

As long as you are S-OFF you can downgrade/upgrade your bootloader anytime you want. Just make sure to delete the PG86IMG.zip file after you flash it or you will only be able to do a normal boot from the bootloader and not get into fastboot USB or recovery. Also, if you are running 4EXT recovery it will go into safe mode after changing bootloaders until cache+dalvik is reformatted and recovery is restarted.

ok perfect! thanks again ramjet!
I did all this and it worked perfectly. Thanks y'all

Change your bootloader (hboot) to something lower that 1.57 and it should work.
My recommendation is the JBear 1.50.5050 version.

Stuck at bootloop after installing Viper3D rom

My phone gets stuck at bootloop after installing Viper3D. I did a ssytem wipe and installed the rom. Am I missing any steps like formating cache/dalvik? Rather, what are the correct steps since I can't seem to find any. My phone has hboot 1.5, unlocked, s-on, CWM 4.0.1.4

Couple things..
You need to be on hboot 1.58. You can do this by running the 2.89 RUU.
It will also help to get s-off and there's a complete guide on how to do this Here.
if I follow those instructions, would i be able to install the CyanogenMod 10.1? According to the thread, it says i must NOT have hboot 1.58 but I will gain that if I follow those instructions.
i followed the down and dirty instructions and was able to root my phone, have hboot 1.58, and have S-Off. Installed Viper3D with success. Thanks for the help.
Now my next question is...how do you down grade hboot 1.58 to 1.50?

Install the supported Hboot in the bootloader, which is 1.40 I believe.
simply rename the file to PG86IMG and put it in the root of your Sd card.
here is a list of the hboots

[Q] S-off , Stock RUU and being LOST!

So I've been searching all over the interwebs and all over this site on info as to how to get my evo 3d CDMA (virgin) to s-off so i can run JB roms.
Ive tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563342 But i keep getting stuck. Ive done the mainver downgrade but it seems that i cant find the correct RUU. all the links are pretty much dead and the shipped-roms.com link only has the sprint RUU's. My Hboot version also seems to be holding me back. I always relock the bootloader when i attempt an RUU but once again with no stock rom i get bootloops and a security warning then.
My current setup:
Shooter XC SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.57.0000
eMMC-boot
April 20 2012 17:39:22
mainver is 1.0.0.0.0
I am also using venom3d for my everyday rom.... I DO NOT have a stock rom nandroid
any help would be appreciated

Everything you need is in this guide. Since you've already downgraded your mainver the RUU included should flash correctly.
Make sure to use the VM version of the all-in-one file.

Thanks ramjet. For somereason redoing your post for a 500th time got me to s-off Hboot 1.57.
I assume now i just have to install an Hboot from your post in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817513
Would you recommend PG86IMG_1.50-hboot or PG86IMG_JBear_1.50.5050_hboot_GB being that most JB roms (esp midnight's) refuse to work on 1.57

I'd recommend the JBear GB 1.50.5050 version since that will let you run more fastboot commands without having to unlock the bootloader.

Rumrunner should work.
Being s-on sucks, but you can still run custom ROMs. You just need to download the ROM's zip file to your pc, unzip it and fastboot flash the boot.img.
Someone might still have the necessary files for firewater s-off.
Rumrunner is the only method to S-off Hboot 2.10. You'll have to be S-off to downgrade via RUU to an older Android version. Might want to hit up the Rumrunner thread and make sure that you've got your computer set up properly to run it. Firewater has been discontinued and is no longer supported by its developers.
