Flash ROM without wiping kernel - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running CM10 nightlies but siyah kernel, however, because they're nightlies, I have new updates everyday, which means I have to reflash the kernel every time, is it possible to flash without wiping the kernel every time?

Seriously? No rom developers know the answer to this?

You have not asked in a section where rom developers are hanging about much .
Seriously you have not looked/asked in the CM Question and Answer thread ???? Not in the CM rom thread ??? .
jje

use mobile odin pro (availble in play store) download the tar version of cm10 and in odin choose the rom then go up to the kernel part and clear it, onstalled kernel will survive the flash, but I reccomend you read a little about odin first.it's not a good thing to flash if you're not totally aware of what's happening

Thanks for the responses I'll look into it

First get the rom on your SD card, flash baseband.52 and install the rom normally with recovery, nothing special is requires for flashing the kernal it is done automaticly. If you need help on how to flash use my guide from my sig

So that kernel is already inside and i need just to flash it using baseband .52 ?
You flash the baseband with the flashtool and the rom with recovery. The kernal is included yes. Read through my guide, it explains all about how to flash roms and basebands.

I really don't have a clue if that would work or not cos J's kernal is for 2.3 and wolfbreaks rom is 2.2. You could always just try it out to see if it works just make sure you back up up wit recovery first and if worst comes to worst flash with the flash tool and redo your set up.

no need to flash the firmware through odin..
go to cwm recovery.. wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and factory reset(if you like) and flash it through the recovery!

the recovery you have is the stock recovery.. and for flashing roms and stuff you require cloxkworkmod recovery!
so i would have to ask are you rooted?! if yes then how did you root your device..?

Start reading on how to root and installing kernel with CWM Recovery. SGS kernel and recovery parttions are the same.
Easiest way is flash Chainfire's CF-Root kernel with Odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
There are many other ways; Intratech has a quick root guide in post #1 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Read, read and read some more until your confident to do it. Otherwise don't.
Please also read the "Stickies" in each forum and FAQ etc and search for answers BEFORE posting.
Best of luck
And if you really want to try ice cream sandwich, i will advice you to go with cm9 first as it delivers the smoothest of the experience with almost no force closes or random reboots. You arr aware of the fact that you are going to flash an expermental build right. Its not stable for daily use yet.

what i suppose is that there is a conflict between the rom and the kernel, what i would suggest you do is install a different kernel, like siyah or N.E.A.K
try this first tho
1) go into mount and storage then format system
2) get the latest siyah on ur SD card and flash it from recovery
3) try reinstalling hydra
coming to my house proves it. but yesterday I did that but left with a semibrinck ... I am not sure why that was. thank you very much for the answer

I've rooted my phone using rachmat3 method and thats how far i've got because only just got phone as a gift and im scared to flash a new rom incase i brick my phone.
Is it safe to use the cwm.zip to flash a rom that i used from rachmat3 root method or do i need a updated version of cwm?
Can someone recommend a fully working paranoid android rom that i can use for daily use?
Which kernel would be best to use with paranoid android rom?
Should i flash a kernel before i flash a rom?
If i install paranoid android rom would i then have a permanant cwm on my device or would i still need to use my temporery cwm.zip?
What is the chances of me bricking my phone?

Flash what ever rom u want till its for GT-I9100
No need to worry
Just read the specific rom instructions carefully

Yes mate now u can flash any Rom ....Just read the instruction before flashing
I would advise you to flash a safe kernel first before doing any wipe and flashing any roms. Siyah is a safe bet.

1. Download ROM Manager and you'll be able to flash any ROMs you wish using that.
2. All the PA versions are working fine, so just browse through and choose for yourself.
3. Asking questions like that is against forum rules because they often lead to arguments. The best advice is just to download and flash different kernels and stick with which ever one you're happy with.
4. It really doesn't matter in which order you flash them. The result is still the same. I personally always flash the ROM first, but it doesn't make a difference.
5. If you use ROM Manager, as mentioned previously, even if you have to do a full wipe when flashing a different ROM, it doesn't matter because you can simply download it again anyway. Or just save it to your SD card.
6. The changes if bricking your phone are higher if you're worried about it. Just be sure to read all instructions given about installation and follow them perfectly and you'll be fine.
If after reading about flashing ROMs you are still worried, then you're better off waiting for a bit until you've done more research into what exactly is needed.

Thanks for your replys.
just follow the steps mentioned and follow some video (like on youtube) and it'll be easy!

I don't recommend using ROM Manager since it can brick the phone.
Why don't flash custom kernel and use real CWMR?

Most ROM zips include kernels, so if somebody wants to stay with the same kernel, then it's necessary to flash custom kernel again.

I just mentioned ROM Manager from personal preference to be honest.
I've always used it on my S2 and never had a problem with it.

Ok so i've downloaded paranoid android and gapps ive nandroid backed up i've efs backed up all thats left to do is flash pa lol is it defently safe using rachmet3 temp cwm.zip or should i download a new temp cwm or use permanent cwm through flashing siyah kernal. Just coz i have no pc to revive a bricked phone and i wont beable to check online for solutions as my phone will be bricked.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
You will need a pc if for example you flash a kernel and somethings not right. You cant get cwm, only download mode.
That happened to me when I flashed a siyah kernel.Phone was stuck and I couldnt boot into cwm.Only way to fix was boot to download mode and use odin/pc.

from where can I get it?
does it require PC and odin or not?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
In http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270 you can find your appropriate kernel, but you need to choose the right one, because the latest kernels are for JellyBean only.
No, you don't need Odin/heimdall and you don't' need a PC even if it's better to have one at hand when it comes to issues.
One hint: read and try to understand everything before flashing. If you are unsure, ask, otherwise there is a chance to brick the device, especially with 4.0.4 stock (-> brick bug)

btw im going to flash the latest jellybam on i9100 so will siyah have any problem regarding the ROM ? i mean will there be any lag or something ?
CWM matters, not the kernel you're actually on.
Of course if you're on 4.0.4's kernel you can't wipe.
Sent from...this is not even my S2
The Siyah kernel will be overwritten during the jellybam flash anyway......so as mentioned. ...the kernel doesn't matter/won't cause compatibility issues
