Hello all, been reading through this forum for over a week in anticipation of moving from Sprint --> Verizon and getting a Rezound. Rezound was received yesterday and so far I'm liking it a lot. I'm coming from a Galaxy S phone on Sprint, where rooting was quite a bit different than it is on the Rezound. There are still one or two things I'm not sure about, hoping someone can chime in:
1 - I haven't received the OTA yet (I was prompted but I deferred). Is there any benefit to unlocking/rooting before the OTA? Seems like it works either way, just wondering if there's a benefit.
2 - If I use CleanTool for temp root + debloat before the OTA, will the OTA still go through and if so will it "re-bloat" my Rezound?
3 - Anything else I should do before accepting the OTA? After reading so many issues with the OTA update, just wondering...
Thank you - this forum has been a great source of information so far, and it's... ahem... much more civil here that where I came from
:::: edit :::: scratch #2, I see that using CleanTool to debloat seems to keep the OTA from going through

1) No benefit if you plan on accepting the OTA
2) OTA will rebloat the phone and also kills temp root
3) OTA kills the current root method and you can only perm root after that which requires unlock.
I would just let the phone do the OTA update. It will make things easier for you.
After that unlock the bootloader from HTCdev.com, this will wipe your phone so I wouldn't do too much with it.
After that install Amon Ra from fastboot and in the developer section of Amon Ra there is an option to install su from there.
Root complete, don't install the new binaries, they tend to bork root access on this phone.
Use otarootkeeper or whatever it's called

Also if you do unlock the bootloader before you update, you have to relock it to get the radio update. Its just a pain, take the OTA and be done with it.

Another thing to watch for and read about is mainver. You'll be on 2.x with the OTA. If you go with an ICS ROM you may get mainver 3.x and then might end up getting mainver errors if you want to go back to GB. There are threads discussing this and ways around it so don't worry, just something to be aware of.

Easiest way of avoiding main ver errors is to just learn to flash the kernel by flashing the boot.img in fastboot the same way you installed Amon Ra.

Yeah, I like using fastboot. Don't know why so many people seem to avoid it as much as possible.
But con247 did come up with a new tool - Awesome Recovery Tool - that automates the mainver issue. I haven't had a need for it but people are liking it.
Thank you all, took your advice and am currently rooted with the OTA. Only glitch I ran into is that the main stickied rooting thread still has the one-click root as a step, which seems not to work post-OTA. Went straight from unlock --> amon ra recovery --> install superuser/su, all's well.

This is not true. I was able to accept the OTA without relocking. You just need to be on the stock ROM, kernel and recovery. I have also confirmed this with a few other people.

So like most users, I was very excited to hear about the ICS leak by Football since I've been waiting MONTHS for some sort of development on that.
Getting impatient on waiting for CM9 and Evervolv builds for the Amaze, I really wanted to try this new leak for T-Mobile. So I figured that in order to do that, I must get S-Off.
It seemed like a tedious process so I've been holding it off for a while. Now that I've got a copper wire and everything, I wanted to do the deed once and for all.
So I accidentally flashed a stock rom (which I thought was a good thing since the instructions said I needed a stock rom), but I seem to have lost root access. Superuser runs, but battery calibration says I need to have root first and Titanium Backup doesn't work. However, my phone still says unlocked and I can still run ClockworkMod Recovery. The S-Off program tells me that there's an error. Is there anyone that can help?

Well you are on T-mobile so you have two choices here. you can S-off if you want to have total freedom or you can revert your phone to stock and relock your bootloader and flash it and then re-unlock again. but remember flashign this without s-off may prevent you from getting s-off later on.

Well, I can't flash the PH85IMG without S-Off, right? Because on the HBoot screen, it would load the file but i wouldn't be asked if I wanted to install it. So I had no idea what to do. Pretty sure you just use fastboot to lock, open a command prompt with your phone attached in debugging mode, type in fastboot oem lock, then install the stock rom listed in the development section. (If I am wrong on this, someone please feel free to correct me.)
Hi Everyone,
I accidentally hit the OTA update (software ver. 1.22.651.3 710RD) for my rooted HTC EVO 4G LTE phone (whoops!). I have SuperSU Pro with Survival Mode activated but that didn't work. I never installed special ROMs and primarily used ROOT for Tethering.
At any rate, my root is now gone and I can't find any discussions about how to re-root after an OTA update. I don't want to screw up my phone any further since it seems to be working ok otherwise.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

You'll have to do the HTCDev unlock method (easiest way is through RegawMod). That's the only way right now.

actually the best way is htc dev using the adb tools mini sdk, regawmod has not been fixed and there are a lot of users complaining that they get stuck. To me it only takes a little common sense to solve 90% of the issues using regawmod but some people need their hands held and that thread is slowly boiling down to the worlds most repetitive support desk.
HTC Dev Unlock
Requirements
HTC Drivers
ADB Tools Mini SDK
Setup
Install HTC Drivers if necessary
Extract ADB Tools anywhere, doesnt matter
Open ADB Tools and hold shift+right click, select open command window here
In phone settings, enable usb debugging and disable fasboot
Connect the phone to pc
Steps
In the command window type adb start-server
Next type adb reboot bootloader
Select fastboot
Type fastboot devices to make sure you are connected
Type fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Right click and select mark, click and drag from the top arrows to the bottom arrows and make sure not to highlight any empty spaces as this will confuse the website, right click and it will be saved to clipboard
Now go to HTC Dev and if you don't already have an account, sign up for it
Go to unlock bootloader and select other supported models and accept the agreements
Skip the steps until you get the to token submit window and paste the token you copied earlier and submit.
Go to your email and download the unlock_bin code
Put the code in the ADB Tools folder
Type fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
When the phone prompt comes up to unlock bootloader hit yes, now you are unlocked, re-enable usb debugging and disable fastboot
Type adb reboot bootloader
Type fastboot devices to make sure phone connected
Type fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-jewel.img
Type erase cache
Reboot phone and you will have unlock and recovery, all thats missing is to restart phone in bootloader and select recovery to flash a rom. Wipe Dalvik, cache, Factory reset, system and then install the rom. If it doesn't boot, extract the boot.img from the rom and put it in the adb folder and in fastboot type fastboot flash boot boot.img and reboot

Well, after getting the phone going and attempting to use programs with root privileges, it seems that the rooting process didnt work. All the steps went just fine until I got to the last one and it said to "wipe cashe" when I typed that in it didnt work, so I just skipped that step and rebooted the phone.
Is that what caused the root to not take to the phone?

Also tried this last night. I plug my phone in, hit the ROOT button and nothing happens. I actually get a "not responding" on the software. My phone does not reboot into recovery. Does the HBOOT version matter with this? I am v1.19
Sorry, I am still learning all these terms. Not exactly sure what effects what.
I rooted and put Cyanogenmod on my OG EVO and never had this much trouble.
FYI: I was rooted before doing the latest OTA update. So I still have a Super user icon but if I click it it cant update the binary (because I am no longer rooted)...I read somewhere that people said to do a factory reset then try this rooting method again, because of old junk files left behind on the phone. This true?
Does this work on hboot 1.19?

If I want to completely update my phone (Android 4.0.3, Soft ver 1.22.651, baseband 1.02 because I pretty much got the phone the phone in December and immediately rooted it), will this method work? I'd really like to get Mean Rom but obviously, I'm in need of a few updates and I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to get there. It seems like doing all the official updates and then re-rooting and then installing MR would be the simplest way to do it buuuuut better to ask and be wrong and pointed in the right direction than screw everything up.

Would have been great to s-off with sunshine but i guess our device is not supported
Someone working on s-off for our device?
Jcase and beaups are working on Sunshine S-off version 3.0, which will most likely support our device. It isn't out yet though, but should be soon. Whatever you do, DO NOT post in the sunshine thread asking anything about it.
$ 25 is a lot for a 610 Thanks for reply
Any advantages now that we can s-off with sunshine?

Went and removed red text and added a new splash
With it, you can also change the radio. And bootloader I think. And pretty much anything.
I assume just running the app will remove the red message, but can we just run this with our bootloaders already unlocked and rooted?
And is there anything that changes as far as how we update firmware in the future? I noticed some people were waiting for new exploits, meaning root might've been broken by updates so there must be some more info to it. It'd be great if it had a built in way to take otas even if it means automating the lock/return to stock to do this...
Thats the only thing I'm worried about, I'll s-off, do the whole recovery and mods, Lollipop drops and the only way to update is to relock and RUU. Then be stuck unrooted.

No, you've gotta flash a new splash screen with the command: fastboot flash splash splash.img
Yes, run it unlocked and rooted. That's optimal.
The current way to root should be fine for the life of the phone. Root tool v4 should be finer, actually. Use it instead. It's easier. No root is broken that I'm aware of.
To get an OTA, you will need to relock and ruu, plain and simple. It's always been that way. I don't know if s-off will affect that or not.

***I actually misspoke there...what I meant was the current version of sunshine wasn't working on the latest firmware (not our phone I don't think) and they were going to release a new version shortly.

You have to have a specific splash screen. So, someone with a stock one can pull theirs hopefully and we can reflash that.
I installed a custom recovery (twrp) and rebooted. And then rebooted back to recovery to flash the supersu zip, and then rebooted. I then saw I was supposed to use "su insmod wp_mod.ko" to make the root stick and I tried doing it on terminal emulator on my phone but I didn't work. I also tried running the command on my computer but it said "su" is not a command. So then I verified root, uninstalled some system apps to test out, rebooted, and the system apps were back, so therefore root didn't stick. And now that I tried to remove root and completely reset my device and install the stock RUU, it fails and gives me an error in fast boot that says "security fail ruu".
Can anyone help either help me fully root. Or revert to stock again?

We've got a system 'S-off' so we can edit the /system in the stock rom, basically that link I sent you is 'S-off', but real S-off is turning of the hardware system protection allowing access to the whole emmc (i.e. it shows S-off in the bootloader), sadly the real s-off we don't have.

If you check out my guides you'll see that all of them involve flashing through TWRP because I had S-on, but if you disable system protection you don't need to flash anything and you can for example, use the Xposed write to /system/ installation mode or just install something like AdAway which needs access to the hosts file inside the /system/. S-off is not only useful for ROM development, but for speeding up certain things. But don't worry, you've acquired software s-off with that mod and it does even work/stay when flashing the a custom rom.
We do have full s-off. Sunshine s-off is compatible with the desire 610 unless something has changed. It just costs money.
You have not acquired any s-off with that mod, and they are two completely different things. That mod removes system write protection, which is important, yes, but is nowhere near as powerful as s-off. With s-off, you can flash new radios, sim unlock (supercid) your phone, etc. It's not something to mess around with though, unless you know what you're doing, as you can permanently brick your device with it into an unrepairable state (unless you have jtag).

Was it made for the Desire 816? I noticed using files for the 816 is fully compatible with the 610. And how much does it cost?
Sent from my HTC Desire 610 using Tapatalk
It was made for a ton of htc devices and works on pretty much all of them. Not any specific one device. It's an apk that you sideload and run, and it will tell you if it will still work or not. Also, updated my post while you were replying. And I believe it is $25. But you pay after it tells you if it'll work or not.

It was made for a ton of htc devices and works on pretty much all of them. Not any specific one device. It's an apk that you sideload and run, and it will tell you if it will still work or not. Oh that's awesome. Do I really need S-Off ? Like it's been so long since I've used an HTC that I forget what it's used for [emoji1]

Also, I downloaded Sunshine, and it failed to run the test because I installed Xposed. It says to remove xposed. Do I just remove it by uninstalling it in the system apps uninstaller? Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for a the help!
Edit:
I found to uninstall xposed in the xposed menu.

Sorry, at work. You don't really need it unless you're planning to change radios or need sim unlocked and can't use a code.

It's all good. Can it be used to reuse a SIM? Because I have a consumer cellular SIM in it now that my mom used before she gave the phone to me, so would it make the SIM usable?

We've got a system 'S-off' so we can edit the /system in the stock rom, basically that link I sent you is 'S-off', but real S-off is turning of the hardware system protection allowing access to the whole emmc (i.e. it shows S-off in the bootloader), sadly the real s-off we don't have.

What'd u mean the "real s-off"? I thought that's precisely what sunshine offers for $25?

Whole emmc access + it shows s-off in the bootloader, that's what I meant.

So if I follow (and I am trying to find more info elsewhere) are you saying this phone has additional locks at the hardware level that sunshine can't make accessible? I thought you could make it say s-off As well as remove the "tampered" status and the red text on boot? And even with all that I still thought $25 was a little high for a phone with so few development options.
