Some DNA Tips - HTC Droid DNA

1. If you cannot get into HBOOT or recovery, go in settings, battery and turn off fast boot.
2. If you need data and voice at the same time, go settings, mobile data and change the network to CDMA/LTE.
3. If you need SmartSync disabled, there is an app in the market for that (SmartSync Disabler). If you don't know what SmartSync is, you don't need the app. LOL
I will expand this as things come up.

Are you saying with #2 that SVDO IS POSSIBLE while only on Verizon's 3G network? (data on 3G voice on 1X-Advanced) Or do you have to do this to get SVDO while on 4G? (data on 4G voice on 3G)? I am assuming the latter...

Where's the option to change network? Can't see it on mine

I'm hoping so, although I heard a rep said it wasn't possible.. can someone with a DNA confirm whether it works with these settings?

From what I have been told, it only works on 4G, but I don't have any 3G areas around me to test it.

Live in Sussex...work in Newark...yeah no 3G anywhere for you guys...I'm still bathed in up here..lol
The demo unit at the Rockaway Mall is live...I'll stop by and change that setting and see if it does. It DID NOT work when I tried it on Wednesday but I am assuming it was set to global mode. It probably won't work but I'm passing by there today anyway.

Switching to CDMA/LTE won't enable SVDO.
The MDM9615 in its current configuration doesn't support SVDO and this can be seen in another phone (iPhone 5).
If you want to look at the technical reasons (for iPhone 5 as an example), HTC probably did it to keep the phone so slim and less of a brick.

Will need to look at the FCC docs to be 100% sure on the capability of SVDO and this device.
It's not about the MDM9615 chip config, its about the lack of transmissions and such that limited the iP5, as svdo requires multiple paths.
I'd be surprised if its not supported here on this device for VZ to be honest... The reason iP5 lacks it was merely bc they wanted to cover more LTE bands with one device as opposed to many devices...
This being on VZ I'd think it'd be implemented....less they made other decisions for some reason...need look over FCC doc to see.
In the end looks like a solid device you guys have regardless!

That was what I was referring to regarding config and the 9615 and using different paths, which, according to the Anandtech article, adds thickness and weight. I figured the paths were directly related to the 9615.
My bad.

No worries.
Yeah it would add weight and such if apple wanted to keep the current antenna design and add the path ontop of it, is the way I look at it.
If I get time ill look around and see on the DNA bc ill be stunned if it doesn't support it.... That is less HTC went to a diff antennae design somewhat themselves too...which is possible.

The program WiFi Tether for Root Users works for those that are rooted with these settings:
Change the Device-Profile to HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM)
Change Setup-Method to Netd-Ndc (master)
Add encryption, change passphrase, and change SSID as needed.

Also, how do i turn off cellular data? I know this is blasphemy, but im coming from and iphone and i want to be able to force wifi when needed, and ensure there is no cell data usage when i want.
What if we have already rooted our phone, how do i turn off lte now?

I know its cumbersome, but until we have roms with custom toggles in the notification bar pulldown, go to settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > uncheck data enabled.
I don't have a note, but this has been the same on both my infuse and captivate. Should be the same or similar for the note. Yeah its cumbersome, but it works.
Also, if you stay connected to the same wifi, it shouldn't use data anyways, but I suppose this way makes sure.

Blown, welchert, and various. Thanks so much for making an android noob feel at home! While the LTE issue isnt resolved, a major worry of mine is!
No problem. And I'm not exactly sure, but there may be some code that you can dial to force 3g data only. I know for my infuse there are codes to force edge, but I have no clue about lte. Anybody with any knowledge of this should definitely chime in, because once I get my note ill definitely be interested in turning of lte as well.

If you arent in an LTE supported area you have no worries. ATTs network isnt like verizons where the phone will constantly be looking for LTE. If you are in an LTE area and just dont want to use it you will have to alter APN settings to one that only uses H+. You should be able to use the same settings from an H+ only phone.
Just go in settings, wireless network, mobile network, network mode... And you should see this

unfortunately that option isn't in the at&t version... i live in an lte area, but for battery reasons i may want to turn it off some of the time, but not something as difficult as changing apn settings every time.
If there's no easy option i'll just deal with it.

As expected, stock at&t ROM doesn't have that simple option to choose which of those 3 data options you want. I'm not surprised considering stock Skyrocket also doesn't give you this option.

Verizon doesn't search for LTE constantly if you aren't in an LTE area.

4G LTE Battery Life Tip

Love 4G LTE speeds but just hate to see your battery drop like a rock? I'm sure i do
Well i have a theoretical solution to this:
Im going to be talking about different data modes so it would be best to read this:
Specifically page 5(but its an interesting article)
http://www.extremetech.com/mobile/110711-what-is-lte/
ExtremeTech said:
The reason why LTE devices right now eat batteries for breakfast is because the network operators are forcing these devices into active dual-mode operation.
For Verizon Wireless, this means that all of their LTE devices connect to both CDMA2000 and LTE simultaneously and stay connected to both. This means that you are eating twice the amount of battery for every minute you are connected than you would if you were connected only to CDMA2000 or LTE. Additionally, when you make calls on Verizon Wireless LTE phones, the CDMA2000 radio sucks down more power because you are talking. Sending and receiving text messages causes pulses of CDMA2000 activity, which cuts your battery life more. Arguably, constantly changing radio states could be worse for battery life than a switch into one mode for a period of time and switching back, so text messages may actually kill the batteries faster.

Basically what Verizon is doing when 4G is on is forcing their phones to be running 1xRTT, CDMA2000(3G) and LTE at the same time.
Now the question is why would anyone do this? the reason why is so that when you leave the range of a 4G tower you are greeted immediately with 3G(no need to turn it on)
So some of you that live in areas where you constantly use 4G are saying "screw 3G i always have 4G" and that brings us to the point of the thread:
Dial *#*#4636#*#* on your dialer and go to Phone information:
Scroll down to "preferred network type.
It should say something like "CDMA + LTE/EvDO auto." this just means it will switch between 4G and 3G automatically.
GB:
Now look at the bottom and you will see "LTE mode (w/voice)"

Sense 4
Choose LTE, CDMA
ICS:
choose LTE, CDMA
Dont confuse this with VoLTE(voice over 4G) as it isnt
This just means that the 3G connection will not be running along with the 4G connection and should save battery.
Select the one corresponding to your firmware and Congrats, now your phone can only connect to 1x and LTE.
Everything will works as it normally would but if you leave the range of a 4G tower it will not automatically switch to 3G.

I do not see this option. Running Clean ROM developer edition (latest version), with just a system UI modification for a more AOSP theme. That mod is somewhere in the thread for the ROM.
My options:
CDMA only
EvDo only
GSM/WCDMA, CDMA, and EvDo (PRL)
CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto
GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto
CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/Lte auto
LTE only
LTE, CDMA
:/
Tried setting it to LTE only (hoping voice was just unmentioned) but it didn't work.

I think you might be confused. CDMA is used for calls and texts and LTE is used for Data and MMS. In this mode the 3G radio isnt even on.

Yes I am, I always thought VZW's 3G ran on their CDMA network. I guess because I thought ExDo Rev A was part of the CDMA thing. Mobile technology is too convoluted. Too many bands and such haha.
1x - CDMA - voice/text messaging
3g - EvDO - Data
4G - LTE - Data
That's what Verizon uses. LTE, CDMA should be what we want. I'm testing this out and will report back later!

[Q] Is there a fix for these 3G connectivity issues?

This is a difficult topic to search. anything with "3g, issues, connectivity, drop" brings up pretty much every thread possible lol.
I vaguely remember reading about people having problems with 3G not picking up/connecting a while back but havent heard much since.
It has been a constant issue with me as of late. I'll drop wifi when I leave work or my house and 3g picks up maybe....MAYBE 20% of the time(no exaggeration). ##data# to restore, updating profile, updating prl. Even tried a factory reset. No dice.

Makes sense. If that is the case though. Arent S3 users out of luck too with this?
Don't think it's the chipset necessarily. It will happen to me when I'm at 4-5 bars , then just drops, and gets locked out. Normally if I flip the network on and off a few times it will turn back on, but sometimes a reboot is needed.
Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't seem like it is the network or the chipset. No?

I have this problem sometimes when I turn off mobile data and turn on wifi at home then leave and turn off wifi and turn on mobile data but it won't turn on. Turning airplane mode on then off to reset the radios fixes it for me.
Thanks for the applicable replies everyone.
I just wasn't sure if I had missed a "fix" before I picked this up. The silence on the subject had me wondering. Guess we can only hope for an update/patch in the near future. Not a big issue but an annoyance.
Mine's been acting up the last 3 days or so. I used to run it all the time in LTE/CDMA mode. And that was fine for a month.
But being in one of the first LTE markets, that doesnt work anymore. It flashes turning on.. very quickly disconnected, then turning on.. over and over. If I put it in CDMA only, 3g pops right on and it's no problem.
One of my coworkers in another part of town is still on lte/cdma with no problems. I went to the sprint store to verify it was just them working on things and they said it was, and the employee had the same issue with her phone.
They said by all means, if it still doesnt work come the 15th bring it back in but at this point.. Just a waiting game i believe. Also, since my coworkers is still working that should mean I'm going to see LTE, and he probably won't right off the bat.
I also had connection issues when using the "LTE/CDMA" setting. Switched to "CDMA only" and it connects reliably, now.
As others have said, I imagine it's because it's trying to connect to towers that are being tested and can't. Switching to "CDMA only" prevents it from trying to connect to these towers.
Funny. It is backwards for me lol.

I've been having a ton of problems with this too. Constantly seems to be dropping even though I have full bars; does it on WiFi too. I'm switching over to CDMA only and will see if that helps me out. Hopefully we'll be seeing LTE here in St. Louis before to much longer.
i don't have any trouble with the wifi dropping out, but right on par with what everyone else is seeing on the 3g. except that the only way i can get mine to come back is to reboot.

This is exactly what happens to me. Wifi, no problems. 3g - reboot about 2-3 times a day to get it back. Mobile network just gets stuck on "turning on"
At least I know its other people now, so I don't try to return the phone and then get even more pissed when I get another one doing the same thing.

that's where i'm at. i've read elsewhere that the OG EVO had a similar/same issue when it first came out that was soon corrected by an update. buddy with a Bionic on VZW said he has a similar problem on it when he first got it, then an update fixed.
i'm new to HTC so i don't know how anxious to get for an OTA. samsung was absolutely horrible with my Transform. Got Froyo like 4 or 5 months after promised
in the meantime i might try this to disable smart-sync which actually links back to here. but that's how i came across it

Try turning off WiFi when it's not in use. It worked wonders for me.

How can I get Sprint to respond to this slow data?

I've been calling every day, every day they tell me no data outages in my area. Have another Sprint user in my building getting same speeds. I've resorted to installing a 3G roaming PRL because they simple won't do anything about it. Before 9/4 the data was fine, slow at times, but I could at least stream Pandora, etc...

Sorry that's so hard to see... but it's less than 100kbps download on almost ALL of them... It's slower than 56k modem most of the time. I have 3G symbol with 4/6 bars and never had bad data like this in the location before 9/4/2012.
Well you could hold your breath or move to city with lte... Jk but yeah I feel ya on the slow data.

Ever heard of "Sprint Vision"? Maybe its happening in your area now.
via EVO.
This is usually what happens when you contact Sprint for issues:

Is it common that when the roll out vision data speeds go to crap before they get better? It's funny as it only seems to be in this 2 mile range around my work. By my house, I'm getting 3G speeds above 1400kbps (which I've never got before). I've told Sprint that, told them that I've updated my profile, basically told them everything and that I just want them to tell an engineer despite what their system shows, that their is slow data in this address range... Still nothing.
Guess I'll just get my contract terminated for roaming...

In the Speedtest Application, just hit the "RESULTS" tab below & it'll give you every run, (date + time, download, upload & ping)
I'm well aware of that, but I wanted more results than that displays, so I exported to CSV. I've fixed the first post so it was better formatting.

I have read that speeds can be affected during the switch over. In my personal experience, it also depends on geographic location. I live in Lake Worth FL, I get 2mb down and almost 900kb up from my house on 3g. Now, I work in North Miami Beach, I'm lucky if I get 100kb down and 3 kb up down here, even on 5 bars. This is even before the LTE rollout. Just because you have a good signal, doesn't mean your data will be fast. I think some areas may be over subscribed, they just don't have the bandwidth available for all their devices in some areas. Hopefully this will get better as they rollout LTE in my area.
If they are upgrading to vision it would be more likely that your speeds would fluctuate rather then stay at a constant low. They may be repairing towers in that area and pushing the load onto remaining towers. That essentially cripples available bandwidth. Had to put up with a similar issue for almost 3 straight months. They should tell you if there are any repairs or improvements being done. Have you tried having your call escalated?

+1 on this. That was going to be my recommendation as well.
CR will probably credit you which looks like you are entitled with the crappy service. And yes, data gets worse during NV upgrades, especially when they are working on the backhaul to the towers. It gets worse before it gets better then you will know its almost time to light up LTE. in short, nothing much more you can do other than leave Sprint but I'm thinking it will be regretted in the end.

Uh, fix it. No one should have data this slow consistently. Every single second. I understand periods of slowness, but this is absurd.
And, it looks like they fixed it last night... Back to normal 400-600kbps.
I've had data that slow at home for close to 15 months, all I got was an Airave (sounds like a motto on a t-shirt).

lol there are places that have had data that slow for 2+ years now with no fixes from sprint.
Get an Airave!, I just moved to a remote area of Hawaii, no data and 1bar at best. Two days after calling for an airave I recieved it. Now 5bars and full 3g. Best part is its free!

AWS availability, LTE speedtest

As many of you already know, Note 3 is one of a few Verizon smartphones that has a Category 4 LTE modem, capable of delivering 150Mbps download speeds. Verizon's been rolling out new LTE layer on AWS or Band 4, and in many cities like NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Miami, to name a few users have been seeing speeds just under 100Mbps, but only using Category 3 devices like GS4, iPhone 5s, etc which are hardware limited at 100Mbps.
Since this is a Note 3 forum, it would be great to have this thread for reports on Verizon's Band 4 LTE, and especially Speedtest.net results which should be north of 100Mbps!
Similar thread exists in GS4 forums: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502716
And a much more in depth one over at HoFo: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ent-and-Verizon-sites-with-Remote-Radio-Units
This article also talked about Verizon's 2x20Mhz AWS LTE: http://gigaom.com/2013/10/14/watch-out-att-verizons-new-lte-network-monster-stirs-in-nyc/
On Galaxy phones it should be easy to access ServiceMode via dial codes, which will allow you to monitor the Band you're connected to, and even force the certain frequency. I don't own Note 3, but afaik Verizon usually tries to block out these codes, although there used to be an app in Play Store that would dial the codes for you (Samsung ServiceMode or Sammy codes)
*#0011# General Debug screen
*#2263# Allows you to force any frequency on your phone
*#27663368378# Main screen
There are a few other codes, please post your findings!
That's pretty neat. Thanks for the info!
I wonder what this'll mean for Verizon customers currently grandfathered into the unlimited 4G LTE data plans and if there's any plans of discontinuing that service.
I'll have to check this out once I head back to the city.

Unlimited users still get to access this LTE channel with capable device like Note 3.
This is what users are seeing on GS4, but remember GS4 is capable of only 100Mbps on the downlink, so that's the limiting factor. Note 3 can push 150Mbps!
I have read conflicting reports, pretty sure its still disabled on our firmware. One guy said he tried in his AWS enabled area and it wasnt recieving it, still same speed as MI9 and others thought they might since they were seeing speeds of like 60 down.
I'm not in one of those areas and lucky to see 30 down on a good day, so I can't tell you definitively either way.

Have you tried the Play Store apps to get into ServiceMode?
There are a few of them, I use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amoopa.sammysmode&hl=en
There seems to be a similar free one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kabasoft.util.servicemodeshortcut&hl=en
*#0011# General Debug screen
*#2263# Allows you to force any frequency on your phone
*#197328640# Main screen
Out of those 3 codes only *#0011# General Debug screen worked for me. Hmm are there any other additional steps I have to take to be able to access those other codes?

I've confirmed it twice that it's not in the update, as we have both Tmo and VZ LTE in Band 4 here. VZ speeds stayed the same post update and my TMO Sim will only go to H+ vs my VZ-GS4 which goes up to LTE on the TMO SIM.

Ok, so you're looking at the first line where it says LTE Band. Band 13 is the original LTE layer in 700Mhz spectrum.
PLMN: 311-480 is the country/network code, unique to Verizon Wireless.
Bandwidth is the amount of spectrum they're using. Band 13 is 10Mhz nationwide, capable of 73.6Mbps peak speeds. Their Band 4 is in many markets 20Mhz capable of 150Mbps peak speeds!
RSRP is "reference signal receive power" -44dBm being amazing, and -140dBm you're about to drop connection.
SNR is "signal to noise ratio" the higher the better. 30dB is perfect.
RSRQ is "reference signal receive quality" -3dBm being amazing and -19dBm terrible.
PA state displays the new envelope tracking (ET) feature only Note 3 has, it saves battery and should improve upload, etc....
You really should be watching the first line and try to spot "BAND 4" and the third line showing you the BW (bandwidth). Should be between 10Mhz and 20Mhz depending on the market. Please state your market when you post screenshots, it will really help me figure out which areas are getting this massive capacity!
Hope this helps!
So do you know why I can't access those codes?
*#2263# Allows you to force any frequency on your phone
*#197328640# Main screen
I really wanna try to enable that band 4 option

Ever since HTC Thunderbolt which had a similar ServiceMenu, Verizon got paranoid about giving users too much low level control, and started requesting OEMs to block these codes from the final shipping ROMs. T-Mobile variant for instance has all of the ServiceMode pages enabled. So the ServiceMode.apk is still there, but it isn't listening dialer any more. You can try those apps I've posted above, they should get you to the service mode.
There is also *#27663368378# Which is the actual root of the app. Also, certain ROMs enable this. It's really enabling it in the build.prop. ServiceMode is baked into the TW framework, so ROM must be TW based.

Ah finally! After the reboot, do you have Band 4 ENABLED? Did it stick? Which ROM are you on and what metro area are you in?
Not all areas have Band 4 enabled. NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, but also Lexington, KY, etc... Try testing it in the busiest parts of your city, since Verizon is deploying there first, to alleviate the congestion.
Hi Milan, nice seeing you here, read a lot of your posts over at HoFo and S4GRU.
YES!!! AWS live in Philadelphia!!! I have kept up with the HoFo thread and haven't heard of any sighting in Philly yet.
What I did was first enabled B4 like above and then went into UE setting, settings, protocol, NAS, network control, band selection, and under LTE preference chose B4 to force it. Interesting enough there is no B13 option in there.
I have screenshots of service mode, was speed test, and b13 speed test. Too bad signal on AWS sucks so I can't really use it. I guess this is because Verizon had the lowest number of towers here. My speed test is quite poor but compared to B13 in Philly, otherwise known as the slowest network in Philly other than Verizon CDMA, pretty much anything is improvement.

Hey this is awesome news!!! Congrats! They seem to be running another 10Mhz FDD LTE in the AWS. EARFCN value of 2100 corresponds to B block AWS license they've acquired from SpectrumCo cable companies! So you should be having another 73.6Mbps channel which should alleviate the congestion!
Have you tried testing in a busy areas of Philly during the Off-Peak hours just to see if the capacity is there? Don't forget to put Network Selection back to "Automatic", otherwise you won't be receiving any calls, just LTE Data
Thank you for posting a short guide on how to properly enable B4 on Note 3!
Again how are you guys even getting into the service mode? Both of those apps and none of the codes seem to work what am I doing wrong here?
