[Q] Any decent media player apps for TV box? SMB? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've purchased a couple Android "TV Boxes" and was shocked to learn that none of the supplied software will play media from SMB/Samba/Windows shared network locations.
My boxes are running Android 4.0x, A9 single core at 1Ghz, Mali400 GPU's, 512MB + 8GB or 1GB + 4GB of memory.
Purchased them from DX.COM... sku 145311 and 157734 (I can't post URLs here)
Just a few of the apps I've downloaded and tested:
- XBMC: Used on my PC's, but too heavy for the Android boxes I have.
- BSPlayer
- Buzz Player
- MX Player
- Mobo Video Player
- Dice Player
- Movie Browser HD
- mVideo Player
Most of these don't support Windows shares very well, or are not user friendly.
Are there any decent media player applications that will do the following?
- Play media located on Windows or Samba shares
- Provide a simple interface so my kids won't get confused
- Play video, audio and pictures
- Possibly link to Netflix and/or YouTube accounts
- It would be great if it were a "launcher" app
Basically, I want a launcher type interface that operates like this:
- I add icons to the main screen.
- The icon can be associated with one or more local folders and/or windows network shares.
- The icon can have rules set to show or hide files and folders that..
- have a specific filename extension (.avi, .mp3, .jpg, etc...).
- that are hidden.
- files of a specific type.
- When the icon is clicked, show the contents of the associated that...
- Match the rules set up for the icon.
- Show thumbnails for files or folders, if available. (use folder.jpg for folder icons, for music or video, locate a .jpg/.png/etc. with the same filename as the movie or music file.
- Allow browsing folders with the same rules as the parent icon.
Alternately, does Android provide any way to set up a Windows share to look like a locally mounted device? This would make some of the players I've found more workable.
I know I'm being pretty specific, but I know what my wife and kids want when it comes to watching movies and playing music.
Any suggestions or ideas are welcome!
I do program... and if I were an Android developer I would try and whip up something. If anyone has pointers for developting an app with wifi, smb shares, ui and playing media on Android, please let me know!

Archos Video Player
Try Archos Video Player.. It has a good graphical interface..

[Q] Missing album art only on SMB and UPNP Music app

Hi,
After several days of research I turn to the community to solve a problem encountered on Archos 70IT but I guess all gen8 devices are concerned. The inability to display album art in the application of music while listening to sound files stored on an external drive (NAS) as well through smb that the upnp.
More navigation in the disc can be done by the storage index but files are not visible in the artists or albums indexes ...
Several assumptions:
-indexing disc is never completely (possible reason for the drive size: 600GB capacity on a busy 1TB)
-external drives are not indexed by the application of music (it would be logical and not stupid. ... because demarage otherwise could be very long)
-Files are not well Tagged (false assumption since moving them on Sd solve the problem)
-the last hypothesis the device is trying to cache or to build thumbnails of album art but it hangs on a corrupted file or due to space and resources.
In the case where the application creates a file where it stores these informations : Is it possible to index the drive once (or find a program that will do) and make the device recover that file at startup rather than resume a full indexing. ...
In short, I need your imagination or your help.
Last thing: if you know a music application with good performances on a smb drive I'm interested .... UPNPlay is not bad (artist and album cover) but the upnp is too limited (number of files are not displayed ....)
Thanks
Moved to general as not rom development
As far as I am able to determine, album art is not available by that function, even if the album art is embedded in the ID3 tag instead of stored along side the music files in the folder.
I can't get any of my other devices on my network to see album art on UPnP or Samba through the music app either.

[Q] Importing External Files into Media Library

One of the biggest selling points of the Archos G9 for me, was the ability to play all kinds of filetypes through the video and music players. I was somewhat disappointed though, when I found out that I had to manually browse through my external storage to play the files I wanted to play. My external hdd is set to autobackup my laptop so that means finding files is folder hell. I was wondering if there is any way to get my files to show up so that I could scroll through them just as if they had been on the internal storage. This would make things so much more convenient. Any suggestions?

Well I kinda want the default player because of its priceless mkv support. I've noticed in the file browser you can highlight an internal media folder (dcim, Music, Video) and select options in Media Share. These are the only folders that you can set share types, which I assume includes the folder into the media library. Maybe there is some way that we could give other folders special permissions to allow them to be shared like these.
I have exactly the same problem. Had in mind to use the G9 as multimedia devices streaming music and video from my NAS to my TV. I had expected that the G9 had native support for Network drives, but it doesn't. At least I could not find it. The best alternative I found is BubbleUPnP. This app detects my Synology NAS and I can start any video from it. For Video you can select which player to use. Music is played with the build in player, which I don't like. I prefer PowerAmp. An app that brings a kind of XBMC to a tablet is what I need.

[Q] Play audio from network share

Hello everyone,
I need some help with an issue I have while using Android on my Xperia U (Rooted, CM 9.1). I have a very big music collection on two different Windows 7 computers, consisted of mp3, mpc, flac, ape, alac files - in many cases with a CUE sheet (flac/ape + cue). Structure is always Artist/Album/(CDXX)/Files. I have a high-res folder.jpg within every separate folder. Using Foobar2000 to play everything while on the PC.
I am looking for a way to play my music on Android. At the moment, I am using ES File Explorer to connect to the LAN share, and then play the music with the integrated ES player. But - no album art, no cue sheet support etc. I also use BubbleUPnP to stream video/audio from Universal Media Server installed on both computers. But I would like to use plain network sharing if possible, not DLNA.
I see that PowerAMP for example has all the file support I need, but I am not sure if it can read network shares. Is this possible? I also installed andLess as a player with lossless and cue support, but only for local files.
I am opened to any solution that will allow me to play my music with the format support same or similar to what Foobar2000 offers on Windows.
Please provide your insights/solutions to this problem.
Thank you and all best.

SMB Movie Directory Lister?

Hi Guys,
I had a thought, whilst trying to look through the Google PlayStore for a DNLA Server app to play some files both off my Android Device and via the NAS Server I have connected to my Router. But unfortunately couldnt find a decent enough App in the PlayStore that catered for every feature I want, and thought...
1) Wouldnt it be AWESOME if the CyanogenMod team include a built in DLNA Server into their current roms??
and,
2) (This is where I am hoping a talented Android Programmer viewing this post may step in...) It would be really useful to have an App that can scan your NAS (or whatever other storage you have), and then list all the files (especially movies) as to:
a) What folder they are in
b) What name the file is called
c) How big that file is in size
d) What format, codec, and resolution
... and so on!!
Some Apps do show some of this information, but not all of it... And so wondered if anyone could code such an App?? Sure it wouldnt take a talented programmer too long to write a file scanning App that could create/output to txt, csv, html reports..??
Does this sound like a good idea??
Cheers, Lister
Anyone?
hi mate,
in wich form do you serve the media on your nas?
You mentioned that you have searched for dlna progs on google play, whats with BubbleUPnP?
Its working fine for me. Or do you have a smb connection to your nas and just want to scan there for movie files?
In this case wouldnt a good file manager be enough?
Hi @clonednull,
Thank you for your reply, and interest....
1) Not sure what you mean by "which form do you serve your media on Nas" ?
My media is various movies (DVDs mainly) that I've ripped in MP4 or MKVs of TVs and Films, stored on a QNAP NAS for easier viewing via my TV (networked) but also on Mobile devices around the house....
2) DLNA Apps on GooglePlay, much like uPNPBubble
True, there are many Apps on the PlayStore that support DLNA, but I guess I'm being a tad fussy here.. I am looking for something that has the looks, elegance and features, such as 3D carousel view of media that can be flicked through, but then clicked and pushed to DLNA devices. I am looking for an App that can push local (on my Android device) as well as networked media (such as my NAS) too the TV. But it all comes down to looks, and so many Apps either look dated, or the ones that look good dont work with local content, and only networked content...
3) SMB Network connection to NAS
Not too sure on the networking side of things, just know I have a QNAP NAS, that works fine when connecting/viewing via the TV. However an App such as "FX Explorer" on the PlayStore views the NAS connection as a SMB.
However the App I am looking for, to connect to my NAS via an Android App... I would like it to be able to scan the directories, count how many files/videos are in each directory, be able to tell me their file sizes, the file formats, their dimensions (ie: 720, 1080, 352 and so on) and then if possible, be able to export this data to the SD Card as a report, beit txt, csv, html and so on....
Basically so I can audit my data/content, so easy to browse and so on....
I did start to look at File Managers, rather than SMB scans or Movie Collection Apps... But cant find a single App on the AppStore than can scan my OWN content, and list it in the format that its recorded in and so on....
If you know any Apps, I would be very grateful...
Many thanks, Lister
Lo @Lister Of Smeg!
Aha so you want a viewer / streamer / dlna client + server / media list scanner + exporter for all specific file informations and this all should be wrapped in a fancy 3d look.
I'm afraid what you are searching for will not be found in one app.
As before mentioned i personally like BubbleUPnP for dlna content and i use the default file explorer (wich is Solid File Explorer) to search arround in my smb content.
If you want a good looking movie library of your smb content check out apps like MovieFlow
A nice looking video player with upnp and smb support is also Archos Video Player
Last but not least you could try out XBMC for android. It looks nice, has a lot of features and also plugin compatibility for many things but it is somehow "overdressed" for most situations.
Check them out at their Homepage: xbmc.org
Hope i could help a little bit mate and wish you all best! :highfive:
Hi @clonednull,
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.... and thank you so much for your reply!!

Indeed, lol.... Yeah I appreciate Im not going to find summit that ticks all those boxes in one App.... :crying: But that wasnt really what I was after, I'm kinda after 2x seperate Apps...
1) A DLNA Player/Server, that can play both local content on my phone, as well as videos found on my NAS. With a CoverFlow kind of interface...
So many of the Apps will not play locally or if do, they pass the playing feature onto another 3rd party App installed. Or they dont have a very good GUI on them, and have something like that of a Gingerbread App... lol
I've tried the Archos Video Player out before, and I think that is awesome... Especially on a Google TV Stick. I bought my folks one of these for Christmas, and have it pointing to my NAS with all my films and TV shows... Looks beautiful and plays beautiful too...
Also tried XMBC, but on previous hardware it didnt really run to well as it wasnt designed for it, and so had a lot of crashes, but it was fairly early into the development days... Looks a lot better now on my phone...
Tried MovieFlow, had a few issues with that... Didnt really want to connect too well I think, and I think it maybe because of the English Database issues its having at the moment (or at least thats what the App says....)
Solution: I think maybe I'll ask the MoboPlayer team, if there is any likely hood of them adding a DLNA client into their App sometime in the future. As that App can play anything and everything, has a lovely interface for local stuff... and especially the CoverFlow. Just needs to add SMB scanning and DLNA output and we're sorted
2) SMB Directory Movie Lister, basically any App (Movie or FileManager based) that can scan SMB / NAS devices, read all the video files on them, create a report on: Folder Location, Name, File Size, Screen Dimension Size, Format, Totals.... and then be able to Output it to a file (beit Cloud based, or local SD Card)
I am really surprised nothing like that exists out there, despite how popular NAS storage is for movies, and even though some Movie Apps can identify such detailed info when scanning files on these Servers, why cant any of them do Reports, say Movie Collectors/Audits...??
But thank you for all your help, very much appreciated... as always!!! I shall update this post if I hear anything back from MoboPlayer team...
Cheers, Lister

Amazon Music: Finding new mp4 Atmos download files, triggering Atmos playback

Hi, I have a question about suggestions for getting my music to play where Amazon isn't allowing me to play it. (Not specifically looking for cracks/encryption bypass.)
Amazon Music (Unlimited subscription tier) now includes an impressive number of Atmos-encoded music releases, including back-catalog remixes.
At this point, so far as I can tell, there are three ways the app will see/download/play these files:
On most mobile devices two-channel playback (e.g. my Pixel2XL)
but with some conditions (downloading, but not playing on Bluestack emulator)
On an Amazon Echo Studio standalone speaker
On a Sonos system
I want to play these files on a device with an HDMI output so I can hear them on my home theater system.
My device options with Amazon Music apps are:
Xbox One
Windows PC
Android TV (Hisense H8G from 2020) (over ARC, possibly the files will pass as EAC3...)
(I have an older phone with root, but it seems authorities isn't the issue.)
The old locations for file download (sdcard/android/ ... data/ or media/; /0/music seem empty of all downloads in the new lossless/Atmos format on my actual phone, though some of my older .MP3 downloads are still there. I'm assuming the new files are just hidden.
The .log file I can see in the filesystem for the instance running on the BlueStacks emulator (/data/.../music) suggests different playback profiles, all using mp4 files for encryption.
Amazon Music .log from bluestacks - Pastebin.com
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
pastebin.com
In the same folder on the emulated instance, divided among arbitrary-named folders [e.g. 00,01,02...; 0a,0b,0c...] are some mostly-arbitrarily-named files that are the right size and with a few naming hints that indicate they're the music files I'm looking for.
e.g.:
B089N5NK21.UHD96.0
B089N5NK21.UHD96.1
B089N5NK21.UHD96.2
B089N5NK21.UHD96.3
...
So...
I'm going to try exporting these files to another device and see if the Amazon Music apps will play them.
But I'm confused about why the emulated instance will download the files in "Atmos" but only plays them in "HD".
Any other ideas?
(Re: decryption/cracking, I have seen all sorts of advertising for Amazon Music downloaders/decrypters, but what I've tried isn't working due to the Amazon website not detecting a valid browser when the downloader app tries to use my login...)
