[Q] Reroot S2! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!
I rooted my friends S2 alooong time ago, it's on Android 2.3 with Cyanogenmod.
Now he's starting to have problems, it says that the harddrive is full, but it isn't. And now it won't boot up anymore.
I'm going to reroot it, how am I going to do? It already got fully working recovery, but it's old.
I got some questions:
*He's stuck on booting logo, can I just flash an 4.1.2 ROM over the 2.3 Cyanogenmod ROM? Will something happen?
*Do I need to update the recovery? How? As I can recall, rooting the S2 was a huge problem for me. I didn't have the same problem when rooting my S3.
Thanks in advance,
Sebastian

What do you want to do?
Update to JB 4.1.2 (XXLSJ)?
Then flash stock XXLSJ ROM, or (like me) XXLSJ NeatROM Lite v4.0, which is modified stock ROM (removed bloatware and some nice mods added).
NeatROM is already rooted, so no need to root manually.
Here is the NeatROM thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569686
I recommend to do the full-wipe install as described in the thread.
You only need CWM recovery for flashing the ROM zip file.
If you want the stock ROM (flashable as tar file with Odin) and manual rooting, then use PhilZ-cwm6 kernel v3.65 for XXLSJ from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270
Just download kernel zip file and flash it in stock recovery (after flashing the stock XXLSJ ROM).
Good luck !

Well, I'm wondering if I just could flash latest Paranoid ontop of the 2.3 Cyanogenmod, would that be possible? And do I need to flash over Odin, or can I just put everything on my SD card and flash via recovery?

HELP installing custom rom please

Hey all.
After reading about the brickbug and failing the eMMC test, im a little confused as to the safest way to root and install a custom rom.
I am currently runnning ICS 4.0.3 with I9100TDULPB kernel on an aussie vodafone branded device.
Do i simply use odin to flash a stock samsung JB ROM, then flash Philz or Siyah JB kernel for root+cwm, then custom rom install via cwm?
I would also like to retain the option of flashing my carrier stock image incase of warranty purposes.
Cheers

Exactly !
PD: Remember to follow the installation instructions on the rom thread, otherwise u'll end in nasty bootloops
Thanks for the quick reply
So this will ultimately allow me to odin flash back to the stock ICS Vodafone Branded ROM later down the track?
Cheers.

[Q] Rooting 4.0.4

Hi..I went through all the guides and stuff..I wanted to install a custom rom on my phone..n I am quite new with this phone..But I have installed custom ROMs on my previous xperia arc s..so i am familiar with the procedure..the only thing m a little confused and worried about is how to root my phone..I am on 4.0.4 and have read that mistakes may lead to hardbricking of my phone..so i wanted to be careful about it..
Now the confusion I have is that while some users have advised to get a CWM recovery and rooting to be done first and then Siyah kernel to be flashed as in the following guide..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
Also some have advised to flash a siyah kernel straightaway through ODIN without doing the above procedure..
I wanted to downgrade to 4.0.3 before going for a custom ROM just to be safe..I wanted to flash the leaked JB XXLSJ based custom ROMs on my phone..so I just wanted help and clarity on which method is better and also I am not sure if Siyah yet works with XXLSJ ROMs..so what is the kernel that I need to flash and all..

You don't need to downgrade to 4.0.3, root, flash CWM recovery and then SiyahKernel.
After flashing SiyahKernel on your 4.0.4, your phone will be rooted and you will have CWM recovery. And SiyahKernel is "safe" from brick-bug.
Just flash latest SiyahKernel (v5.0.1) and then you should create a nandroid backup in recovery - just to have a complete system backup of your current ROM.
Then you can flash the custom ROM in CWM recovery - stick to the installation instructions of the ROM. You may have to wipe data/do a factory reset.
Good luck !
Hey thanks a lot..btw after rooting and getting CWM i can flash siyah directly from the CWM only right..or is Odin better?
Oh and one more doubt..i dont have an external sd as of now..can I do the update through internal sd storage or USB storage as they call it??

You can flash Siyah Kernel via ODIN or CMW whichever you want.. yes you can use USB Storage in CMW
Siyah.zip=cwm
Siyah.tar=odin
You can also use mobile odin

Well if you want to flash a official stock rom then you can only find them on sammobile.com and only way to flash it from odin. After that you can use Philz to install CWM if you want.
Hope it helps

Step 1 - flash CF kernel which is appropriate to ur baseband with Odin
Step 2- Flash cutom rom what ever u want
Step 3 - Flash Gapps..
Thats all :good:
You can flash CWM and then the custom ROM now itself, without upgrading to ICS. Just make sure you flash the correct rooted kernel for your baseband version. Don't directly flash any CWM or use ROM manager. Good luck!

My details
Baseband version - I9100BUKI1
Kernal Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKJ3-CL647431 [email protected]#2
Build number - GINGERBREAD.BUKJ3
So can anyone give me correct CWM recovery to my S2 ? (I just want to flash kitkat rom.. )
And you can't search for this why exactly ? You've been here more than long enough to know how things work.
Flash Gustavo's kernel first and then follow instructions on the omni thread for flashing as a first time user.
Search around and you will find everything here itself.
I'd suggest flashing the latest stock rom via Odin, ms1 I believe. Then flash philz kernel. Then boot into recovery, (while your new rom cwm zips are on your SD card) format system, preload, data and cache. Then flash the omni rom zip, and the correct gapps, and any other mods you would like.

Galaxy S2 (i9100) upgrade from stock 4.0.4 to CM11

Hi all, my second ish post on xda (yes im a moderate android noob), i am after some advice and help on flashing CM11 to my S2 (Intl), as it feels really outdated (because it is) and also quite slow (because it is). Ive read about the brickbug and i ran Chainfire's GotBrickbug tool and it said "unknown chip, not sure if dangerous, at least it isnt known to be bad. The chip is V3U00M and the revision is 0xE. I also ran another checker and it said sane chip. Im running the stock 4.0.4 (rooted with Framaroot and removed carrier rubbish) and apparently 4.0.4 is prone to bricking. Ive read about flashing new kernels (Siyah etc) and other methods. I know there is the 4.1.2 update, does that remove the chances of brickbug so i can then flash CM11 via CWM? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Official 4.1.2 firmware is safe, only 4.0.4 has brickbug.
So do i just upgrade to 4.1.2 then use odin to flash CWM 6.0.4.5 and then follow normal procedure? Thanks for replying btw

Download XWMS3 4.1.2 from sammobile site(you have to log in). Then use Odin to flash it. Download PhilZ xwms3 kernel and put kernel zip on sdcard. Reboot in stock Samsung recovery and flash that kernel zip file. Then reboot again in recovery and flash philz 6.0.5.0 touch recovery.
Or... You can root 4.1.2 with siyah kernel, but you need to flash kitkat compatible recovery

Yes, you can use OTA to update your android. Then you need to root your phone and install CWM compatible recovery to flash CM11

Thanks heaps man, ill probably use Framaroot as it is easy and it works atm, hopefully ill be a happy user of CM11 haha
I just thought I'd say I've got the S2 on OmniRom 5.1 now after using a rather unstable and buggy CM11 nightly. Thanks for your help BTW
