[Q] CM7 Droid X2 install question - Motorola Droid X2

Being new, I am unable to post in the actual thread on the development page. I wanted to make sure I was doing this correctly. The link for the in the main thread has a download link for Google Apps that I need to put on my SD card; the link is broken. I worked my way through the threads and found someone posted this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442803&page=244 (very top post). I assume that Gapps = Google apps and is what I need. I just wanted to double check this was what I needed before I brick my phone. Thanks for your help!

Yep there the same and make sure you flash your rom and gapps/Google apps at the same time
don't be scared it's only a phone

Thanks. Install went very easy. I do have another question. What does it mean in the instructions, "Go into the Superuser app and update the su binary."

There's an option in the Superuser app to update the binary. In the latest version it's in the "info" screen (scroll left), in the older version it's in the settings (press the menu key iirc).

Can someone point me to some instructions on how to use Root Manager? Or, if it is even on my phone.
I'm a little new, but have reflashed my phone to the .435 ROM, rooted it and installed JIT. I'm just not sure where to go on the phone to add some of the new features I want like a camera app from another memeber and a battery in the status bar.
Thanks!
You mean root explorer?
Mount R/W and mess around

Okay, thanks for the replies.
28spawn wrote in his camera app instructions:
Instructions (new steps 2)
Using Root Manager copy the SemcCameraApplication.apk to /system/app overwriting the original one.
Long press on the overwrited app and select Permissions, and make sure that these options are checked: the whole first column and the first from the second.
So, I need to get Root Manager. It is an app???
I'll do some searching for it.

Or maybe pay for that kind of app?
For Root Explorer the R/W button, Menu button, and long presses are your friend.
Menu button is on the bottom left side of your phone.
Hope this helps.

does NT support normal apk?

heard that NT may have BL lock, it really is a bad news.
i'm wondering whether NT support normal apk downloaded from other places?
like installing with other markets and use these markets to install apks?
and could someone tell me the influence if we can't crack this lock?
can we reformat the partitions?can we root the device?
thank you!
Check some of the other threads. Much progress has been made, and its very easy to side load apks.
While no one has rooted it yet, it's still very early. Give it time.

yeah, i saw many guys said they sideload the apps, but i don't understand what is sideload
Sideload = loading apk onto an sd card. You can then put sd card into NT and install app that way.
You will need to first enable apps for unknown sources, you can find how to do this in a number of threads.

Sideloading is the installation of an app from a non-approved source. This can involve installing via downloaded or transferred APKs, installing from a sd card, pushing via ADB, etc.
i got it, this means if i have 3rd party market or apk files, i can install applications in NT

As a rule, it appears that you can install most apps by sideloading. This post gives the basics. Read the whole thread and follow it. If you have any questions, just ask them (search first). The XDA community is the kindest that I know of on the internet, people want to help you.
Hope this question is in the right place.
After downloading ANY apk., after clicking on it, a window pops up that reads:
Install Blocked: For security your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market
Below that is "OK" as my only option.
I've visited and revisited the recent rooting threads and other similar sources and found that most if not all arrive at a different option that offers "Settings" that can be changed. Even when I go directly to Settings>Device Settings, I have NO options to alter and allow "Unknown Sources"
Device: 1st Nook - purchased Nov 2011/ firmware 1.2
2nd Nook - purchased approx April 2011/ firmware 1.3
Both units respond the same way. What are my options here. Thanks for any and all help.

You need to allow installation of non-market applications first. To get to that menu, you can use tgps launcher.

Akkk what obvious answer am I missing here;(

I rooted my nook and blocked OTAs with the indirects method....everything was perfect! And because I am a moron who thought she was be "proactive" I am a little stuck. I noticed people having trouble with their widgets moved their launcher apk...from data/app to system/app. I wasn't having trouble with my widgets but was so stupid and thought id prevent any future problems. Instead of moving it I created a link.....as someone had suggested instead.....when I noticed that didn't work.....I went back ib to try and actually move it....but it said not enough space.....I figured I shouldn't have messes with it at all...so I backed out...but it was on the stock nook screen. I couldn't figure out how to get back to my go launcher from there....so I thought perhaps if I erase and degresiter my device.....idiot. so now my device says 1.4.0.....NOT 9.9.9 anymore.....and it is on the stock b&N launcher still....surely I didn't unroot it right? Any one who could help an idiot noob? ?? I apologize for posting and not searching...but I am not quite sure what to search for because I font really know what I did and what the problem is.....

ok you have erased and deregistered your device from the nook tablet stock settings right? which means ur still rooted in terms of being able to run sideloaded apks.
if you want to take the short route u can just download go launcher ex on your computer and sideload it any do the same process for anything else you are missing, but i would recommend you start from scratch.
to start from scratch, find the superuser.apk which can be found in the nook and zergy installation folder, sideload it onto your nook tablet and also sideload the Nook Tablet Unroot App which Indirect created. Run that app and if all goes well you should have a stock nook tablet at 1.4.0.
just re-run your nook and zergy and you should be fine.
the other option is using adb hijack app, but seeing as you are a novice, i don't think you would want to go that route. hope this helps.
Oh thank you!! Ya I downloaded adb before to go that route and it hurt my brain a little Haha I was happy to find indirects method. Thank you a ton I will do that now!

Okay im getting pretty nervous that im royally screwed. My nook looks like stock 1.4.0 except the little mini book and back button in the status bar that came when I rooted. However....there is no internet browser application ....and every apk I have sideloaded it says.....the nook cannot read this type of file....so I figured I need to re load the appmenu.apk and enable third party....well dur it wont read that file apk either. What gave I done????? Anyone???

ok... what exactly did you do? did you run the nook unroot application that indirect created? I'm kind of confused as to what you did after I posted my suggestions.
I would suggest that you do this.
If it comes to it, power down, hold power and 'n' and it'll turn on, then come to the black background with the n logo then power off. Release just the power button and press and hold again for 7 more times.
On the 9th time just use the power button to turn it on and it'll prompt you with some warnings. Follow through with the continue and it will perform the steps.
BE WARNED: this will perform a complete factory restore so any installed apps will be gone but it won't touch your SD card.

Well I decided to start from scratch...so I moved the superuser apk over to my tablet and the unroot apk.....but neither of them would open in mu tablet.....it would just say. Nook cannot read this file type.....and when I click N button to search....nothing happens except it takes me home......I guess I could try the sd card I did that for my moms nook and it went smoothly....
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Well I tries the power and N 9 times thing....it did a reset again like normal but my status bar still looks rooted although the N button doesn't pull up a quick settings like the stock b&N should.....so I still cannot access the search or internet ....or sideload any apps yet it says 1.4.0..... but appears to still be rooted! Akkk

Okay the sd card did it finally I could go into browser....allow third part appear and check the usb debugging and uncheck automount.....should I assume I am uprooted....ans reuse the Serge script....or try to unroot first?

You cannot install apks that way, it will always say that, easiest way is to install the GApps and then get root explorer and copy the files from your SD card to /system/app.

It says my su binary is out of date..but when I update it fails. I just want to unroot and start over. I emailed myself the superuser app from the indirect rooting folder....downloaded it ob my tablet and it installed just fine....so did the unroot file.....is this because I didn't copy it over the way you are saying? So I just need to download gapps and rootexplorer?

Ok ready im gonna walk you through it.
Root your device
Download the latest super user package, the full package
Unzip the package on your computer, and then find the su in ./system/bin and the SuperUser.apk into the sdcard.
Using root explorer, mount /system/ as rw, and then copy su into /system/bin and superuser.apk into /system/app.
done
your instructions are very clear, but I am not sure how I can move anything in ROOT explorer when I can't get root explorer on my device in the first place....I finally found a download in my browser, and was able to install it on my device...but when I go in there is no option to MOUNT R/W it is simply mounted in R/O....
I keep RE-downloading Go Launcher from my email, and re-opening it....because every single time I hit my N button it takes me back to stock with no way to find the go launcher app....I don't care as long as I can get this dang SU issue fixed so I can unroot and be done with this. what am I missing here, I am sorry i must be very frustrating...but there is no option to change the system to R/W in my root explorer, where there was the button at the top to easily do that before. I am assuming it has to do with the SU not being updated, but I can't do that without rootexplorere akkk and I am not advanced enough to use ADB I dont think.....any ideas? my tablet easily downloads and installs things from emails.....thats the only thing I have going for me right now

Problem getting root

Hello everyone,
I've rooted many phones before, including the Rezound, but for some reason, I can't root my replacement Rezound.
I unlocked the boot loader, flashed Amon_Ra recovery and installed a custom ROM (BAMF 0.6). Everything works, except when I open an app that needs root, it sort of hangs for 20-30 seconds and then tells me it can't get root access. I don't get a prompt to give that app root access or not and I"m not sure why.
I do have SU installed (came with the ROM) but it doesn't seem to kick in.
What am I missing?
In amonra in the development section (in recovery) there's an option to install SU. Try that. I root and installed several roms and haven't ran across or seen an issue like this. Good Luck!

First and foremost glad to hear you got your problem solved. Just a heads up and I'm surprised and happy that nobody bit your head off for this but this thread belongs in General or Q&A not Development. Development is for Tools/ROMs/Mods. If you have a specific question about one of them then you post in the thread.
Thank you to everyone that kindly posted... this is how a mis-placed thread should be handled.

My problem is not resolved unfortunately. I did notice I posted in the wrong section and I would move my thread if I could, but I have to wait for a moderator to do it.
Well, I flashed CleanROM and now SU prompts me when an app requires root access, so I guess it's an issue unique to BAMF 0.6, or it didn't flash properly the first time.
Moderators -> Please delete this thread or move it to the Q&A. Thank you

[ITUTORIAL][FAQ]ViperDNA ROM Discussion

ViperDNA ROM Discussion & Support Thread
Due to the popularity of the ViperDNA rom, and wanting to better assist the users, we are opening this thread to allow for non development related questions and discussion, support questions, advice, help and how to, all that good stuff.
I am not the developer of ViperDNA, I'm simply maintaining this thread so that the main developer is not overwhelmed with too much general discussion and not able to focus on the development aspect of the rom. Many of you know me, my niche has been and will continue to be trouble shooting, support, and helping new users get started in the custom world of Android.
In the thread, you can post questions about installations, discussions of potential bugs as well as user errors, and general Q&A related to the ViperDNA ROM. I will be updating this OP to look much better, and will also be adding sections and subsections with important links.
I urge all of our users to participate and help out with this thread, this is a community effort not just me alone.
ViperDNA 1.2.0 Info
ROM NEEDS A CLEAN INSTALL
Instructions for Clean Install.
Note S On users will want a copy of rom zip on their computer desktop and a copy on the DNA's sdcard, s off only needs the rom zip file on the sdcard
1. Make a Nandroid backup just in case
2. Reboot to Recovery
3. Wipe these INSIDE recovery: Factory Reset, System, Dalvic cache
4. Choose the flash zip menu and select zip file from the sdcard and install the rom
5. S-Off users say yes to the reboot after installation is complete.
*5b. S-On Users will need to extract the rom zip file in a desktop folder and find the file boot.img and copy to their working adb/fastboot folder (For me it would be C:/Android-sdk/Platform-tools)
*5c. Right click while holding shift, in a blank space in the folders where fastboot.exe is located and choose "open command window here" from the right click menu
Run the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img" without the quotes and press enter when its done type "fastboot reboot" without quotes and press enter.
That's It, Setup is Complete
Note: Factory Reset in recovery means wiping the data partition except for media (internal storage, or sdcard) and wiping cache.
Radio and Firmware Information: You do not have to be on the latest firmware (2.04) to flash Viper 1.2.0. I recommend that you achieve s off and try the 2.0.4 radios if battery life is a concern especially because one will work better for your unique phone's hardware and network, signal strength and usage pattern.
Kernel: ONLY RUN THE KERNEL THAT'S INSTALLED IN THE ROM. Zone also has a stock 2.04 kernel posted in the android development section.
Do NOT run custom kernels with this rom until custom 2.04 kernels available, which will be after HTC releases the kernel source.
1.2.0 Important Tips
For instant help you can use the IRC Channel: http://chat.andirc.net:8080/?channels=#droid-dna
Just click on Docnok63 and select PM
For Google maps to work you need to open settings/location and check to enable the new Google location settings. There's now four options instead of three.

Im having the same problem and after some research it looks like people are having the same issues on stock and custom roms.
I'm using stickmount pro. What I've found is that after unmounting or removing the device a reboot is required because my apps go haywire. The only time I've seen similar issues is when people use something like apps2sd and their phone boots before the sdcard is mounted, so the shortcuts on the homescreen or widgets disappear and the app force closes all over the place and disappears from the app drawer.
Obviously the problem with us is not because the apps are installed on an external directory, but the symptoms are very similar.
I will be doing more research and its going to be a focus of mine. I'll keep you guys and gals updated and would love to hear any input or see links that you run across involving DNA and OTG.
Something else with OTG is that when I unmount the USB drive in stickmount, and then I unplug the drive, I get the warning message about the drive being removed while in use or something like that. So its almost like stickmount isn't unmounting, it just thinks its unmounting, and that improper unmounting is what sends the directories haywire.

The error reports on mine come after un-mounting. I am not sure yet as to the cause. I had the same issue prior to rooting

I get an error on connecting otg about not being a valid charging source. On disconnect, several processes crash, which trace to specific apps, including Battery Monitor Widget Pro, Pure Messenger and Gmail Label Notifier. If I disable those apps, then no crash, so I'm pretty sure this is not ROM related.

I'm not sure if this is the rom or the app but when I plug in my otg usb into my phone SwiftKey constantly shows crash error reports... I'm not sure if you guys have seen this before or not... It does not effect moving files or anything it is just weird...

Interesting indeed... I've also had this same issue with the SwiftKey error while utilizing otg. Thanks for looking into this Charlie.

Used the search in the other thread but didn't quite find the answer I was looking for.
Do I start with 1.1.0 and then use the OTA to update to 1.1.3? Should I just wait till 1.2 comes out and then flash, if it makes any difference?

Download 1.1.0 from the original page.
Download this zip file to PREVENT the VERIZON ota. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2149417
Install 1.1.0. reboot.
IMMEDIATELY after it boots reboot into recovery and install the zip file above.
then boot and let venom take you through all 3 updates on it's own.

If I'm on wi-fi only and will be on wi-fi only for a few months, do I have to worry about the disable ota verizon part? Just curious really, sounds easy enough

You really don't have to worry about it. Worse thing that would happen is that it auto downloads, it can't install on a custom recovery. And 1.1.3 has the ota removed so you don't even have to worry about it installing.

I didn't choose to apply the sense camera mod during instal. Is there a way to apply them after the fact?
