1st Post 1st Impressions - Nexus 10 General

I've been a lurker for about a week and just received my Nexus 10 last Wednesday. I'm so glad my impression of my Nexus is far better than the average post here. I'm very pleased with my tablet and thus hope to find a site that has more positive postings on tips, apps and how to improve the user experience instead of constant negative ramblings. Don't get me wrong because I'm sure some issues are valid but my instinct also tells me that this is a damn good tablet.
This is probably my only and last post but good luck all. Hopefully more positive forums will pop up soon.

With it being such a new device, any issues that occur (software or hardware related) are being reported by the community. Most of the time we just want to make sure whatever problem is occurring isn't specific to one unit and requires a replacement.
Software bugs will get fixed soon enough, and common issues will be accepted as known issues for the time being. It'll get better, in the coming months I fully expect current Nexus 10 owners to be satisfied.

WiFi dropping,no GPS,crappy I/O,you name it.Even with JB it was a POS from the door and software/firmware couldnt fix it.

I'm starting to believe sheeps have come here to lie about problems, everyone stating to have one should post screencaps.
You know what they say: Pics or didn't happen.

Just boxed up both Nexus 10's for RMA to Samsung TX. 1st unit was the wrong flash size 16GB instead of ordered 32GB. 2nd unit is correct size but screen displayed dirty/yellow white compared to 1st unit. Minor backlight bleed I probably could've lived with but didn't have time to deal with random lock ups which are probably software fixable. Much happier with my Galaxy Note 10.1 which has been stable and will probably end up adding Galaxy Note II instead.

Galaxy Note II as in the phone, or would you just wait for the Galaxy Note 2 10.1 if they ever come out with that?

Galaxy Note II phone. I'm very content with my existing Galaxy Note 10.1 but it doesn't have LTE and is not pocket which the Note II offers.

Why didn't you get the Galaxy Nexus?

Price?
Availability?
Size?
Pentile display?
Any other reasons?
Or are you getting it
Have a white sgs2, considering getting the nexus when it comes out on at&t with my upgrade.
That's easy. I didn't get the Nexus because at the time I got the S2, the Galaxy Nexus didn't exist (back in May).
But I'd definitely take it over the S2. I do have some slight reservations about not having a microSD slot, but everything else about the device is just so nice...

Software keys? What are those?
.. .. .. LOL.
Anyways, those are the "Back" "Menu" and "Options" keys on the screen. They are really on the screen (in the system, software) but not outside it (hardware) and for most people it may be uncomfy

It doesn't have a microsd slot, and from what I heard only a 16gb version would be released in the UK
I don't think my music collection is particularly large, but I won't even be able to fit my music onto just 16gb.
Didn't get the Galaxy Nexus because it wasn't around when I got my SGSII, even if it was, I wouldn't have got it.
It could of been great, but alas it isn't. Before my SGSII 16GB seemed to be enough, but incidentally after loading my SGSII up, since it's a more capable phone, I've blown 16GB completely.
Software Keys? Doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, what ever you gained with the better res, is now mitigated by the keys!
No SD Card Slot? That decision was clearly made last thing on Friday.
Phil
The Nexus is too big (the SGS2 is as large as I want to go) and, by the time you've allowed for the soft keys, the available screen area is only marginally bigger than the SGS2. Also, no ability to expand the memory.
If someone offered me a straight swap of a Nexus for my Galaxy S2 I'd turn them down...
I had to make a choice of getting an SGS2 or a Galaxy Nexus for a 21st birthday present recently, and decided against the Galaxy Nexus for a few reasons:
- The main reason is that the person receiving it uses her phone's camera to the exclusion of standalone cameras for her photos. I took a look around and saw the hideously grainy photos the Galaxy Nexus produces and decided it was unacceptable.
- Another reason is the early-adopter bugs that come with any freshly released phones. Some of the bugs that unfortunately plague, like sleep of death, would be scary for someone not expecting it to experience.
- The Galaxy Nexus is also priced higher than the SGS2, given that it's newer.
- For someone not fussed with updates, having a Nexus line phone doesn't matter.
If I were getting a phone for myself however, I would get the Galaxy Nexus

Yeah, I have a white sgs2 on at&t, and a upgrade waiting to be used... I don't know if I should get the galaxy nexus when it comes or just wait until after CES...
Decisions, decisions! The nexus s is still very solid, so the galaxy nexus should expect decent life as a relevant phone.
16gb bothers me a bit, the camera a little bit too... but HD and nexus make up for that.
Who knows - hopefully something knocks my socks off soon.
For now I could choose : HTC vivid, Samsung skyrocket, or LG nitro HD. All of them are great but none are good enough to pull me away from my albino sgs2 yet
more opinions plz!!
Screw Galaxy Nexus.. Lack of SD card and crappie camera didn't do it for me. And crappie GPU also.. Galaxy S 2 blows it away.

well. the Nexus was not out when i got the SGSII
BUT, reasons that I rather keep my SGSII, (I have an unlocked euro version)
1. its got a hardware button in the middle, , not the 4 buttons like the US version and not software like the nexus, i like to turn the phone on with that button.. bummed that it's a dead thing these days in the US market and in the ICS phones.
2. My SGSII is the smaller one, and its bigger then my Captivate, but smaller then the huge Nexus, i like the size just as it is.
3. I got the 2000mha batteries, and they are awesome, to me, it does not make the phone ANY bigger!
4. If I am not mistaken, the internal hardware is the EXACT same or close enough to being the same.
5. SD Card, I do a lot of Spotify stuff, but i like keeping stuff on my phone when I can't get cell reception.
6. Let face it people, ICS will be on the SGSII pretty soon! and it will be pretty much just as fast.
the gorilla glass is nice too , but i heard the nexus is just as good just not the same.
etc. etc. etc.
ohh and I am hoping that my next phone is an LTE phone, if AT&T gets LTE,
Another of these threads...
The nexus wasnt out when i preordered my sgs2 (uk version)
The only thing i liked about nexus was screen res (screen size same when using softkeys)
Found camera better on sgs2. Ics coming. Hardware similar. Hate to lose even more hardware keys (still miss keyboard of my touch pro). Sd card expansion

Because not everyone wants to throw out 500+ euros every time a new phone comes out?
Well, I did get one. Even though I agree with most that has been said above, especially the price (expensive!!) and the fact that the camera is sub par. But, even though I was mildly impressed when I opened the box, after a few days playing with the Nexus I have to say that I don't miss my SGS2 (although I'm still not sure whether I'll sell the device). It's just so fast, something you'll notice after playing with it for a few days. Battery life is great and the screen gets better everytime I look at it. But most of all, it's just pure AOSP goodness! Of course you can root your phone and install an AOSP rom, but my experience with the HTC Desire and SGS2 is that a custom AOSP rom is just never as good as the real deal. So that's why I'm really happy I bought the Nexus.
But! The SGS2 is great, no doubt. It's just a matter of taste. I would recommend the SGS2 to just about anyone, but not the Nexus. It's just for those who want to experience pure AOSP the way google intends it. And yes, it comes with flaws. For me it's worth it, for most I'd say it isn't...
-edit- forgot, the on screen buttons are great! They are easily getting used to and it looks gorgeous.
Firstly, Galaxy Nexus was not out when i got my SGS2, ( May2011)
and i was tempted to get it when it was announced, but
Camera,(Yes pixel matters, when you bring photos on big screen),
No hardware home button( way i like to turn phone on),
Not thin and light wieght like SGS2, ( got used to thinness of phone and light wieght), Well, i like big screen thou,
and all temptation for nexus was gone, when news of ICS was confirmed for our SGS2 , and yeah , hardware is stil good, just lack of NFC, but is okey, some other better phone will come soon in 2012 summer.
a great question here is the my answer
because
1- i own s2 coming from iphone4 after the great disappointment that they did not release iphone5
2- price ! as samsung products always drops more than 35% just in a couple of weeks after release and keeps dropping more later (this is where i live; Kuwait)
3- so i think i should wait till iphone5 comes out to make a decision about buying another phone. i should stick to s2 for now.
Ide rather wait for an S3 than upgarde/downgrade to a galaxy nexus.Next year smartphones go quad core so whats the point any other phone now.

Samsung Compares Note 10.1 To iPad

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-57394231-71/samsung-the-new-ipad-is-no-work-of-art/?tag=rtcol
Cnet has a pretty good write up talking about it, but I thought it odd, but interesting, to compare something so small to something so big. While I don't agree that one requiring a full size dedicated tablet could easily forego that need in favor of a Note, I do find that they offer up some good talking points. I gave up my nook color for the time being, things are working out well for me so far, but time will tell.
Edit: Added pic.
They are comparing the note 10.1 which i believe is a soon to b released tablet... Not our phone so not sure why the guy is talking about our phone in the article????

Just wait until Samsung OFFICIALLY announces the tab 10.1/11.6 perhaps even today . Just like before right after Apple releases their iPad Samsung will come out and top it. Last year Samsung went ahead and changed the ergonomics of the Tab 10.1 within weeks to have a slimmer lighter tablet compared to the iPad lol .
It was originally rumored to have a dual core CPU that similar to our Note phones with the same resolution. I have a really really good feeling that will not be the case that it could have a even faster CPU, & mind you that have not even said what the GPU is. I can assure you that Samsung has prob made changes to that of the specs we seen at Mobile World Congress, i hope
They will not let Apple go about their glory without a fight. Especially after them taking shots at the Galaxy tab during their keynote. Which someone at Samsung has already commented on lol.
Samsung has a rumor going around that they are "pocketing" a Galaxy Note tab 11.6" with a resolution of 2650x1600 beating out the new ipad by a million pixels.
Either way Samsung has something big today at 4pm central. Could it be the new Note tablet, ICS for our Notes? Galaxy S3. Who knows its still Samsung so lets not hold our breath lol.
I dunno about you but id love to buddy up my Galaxy Note with a 11.6" version
Well they I kinda only compared one set of features that really were pretty much the same thing. Cool but they over looked a lot of stuff on the iPad. This is coming from someone who hates apple products.

I will be interested in the Galaxy Note 10.1 once it comes out. I just pre ordered the new ipad. (I had a $500 gift card from a sales contest). It delivers March 16th. Depending on when the Galaxy Note 10.1 is coming out, I may sell the ipad. Does anyone know when it is coming?
I love Apple products, as a shareholder! Wish Samsung was publicly traded in the US!

Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4

Hey all, this question is driving me nuts. My birthday is in March and I can get the Note 2.
I love the Note 2 for its massive screen and stylus.
On the other hand I could wait a few more months and get the Galaxy S4 which will surely be one of the hottest phones of the year with great specs and I'll get it right away instead of buying a several month old phone.
Opinions?

In all reality do you think it's specs will be much better then the note? It will simply be the current flavor of the month but in reality won't be that much improved.
If you like the note get it. If you're going to wait for the s4, then may as well wait for the note 3, but by that time the nexus 5 will be coming you so should wait for it and so on. My point is there will always be a new hot phone coming.
So if the phone you like is here already then get it or you will just keep waiting on the next big thing and never actually get any. I can say I've owned most the high end phones on Verizon and nothing can touch this note!

The screen will be bigger on the Note 2 and the GS4 won't have an sPen. I'd say get the Note 2, unless you can do without those two awesome features. I personally can't and won't. My next phone will be the Note 3.
I may be in the minority, but it's rumored that on March 15th we'll know what the S4 will be. Seeing as how it's just a little over a month away, I would personally wait to see if it offers anything that the Note 2 doesn't before you spend $600 and/or get locked into a 2 year contract.

There simply won't be enough advances in technology for the S4 to be worth the wait, not to mention you will have to pay the premium subsidized pricing if you go that route. Of course if you want a smaller screen, then the S4 would be the obvious choice. However, the specs along for the S4 don't guarantee a good user experience where the galaxy note 2 has already been established as providing a good user experience due to the stylus and customized UI that it comes on the device.
With phones, you won't ever be the king of the mountain for long before something better hits the market, so you might as well choose a device that best meets your needs. I was looking for a device that would give me decent battery life, but I didn't expect the note 2, to provide more than 3 days of battery life under light usage and 2 days under normal usage.
Re: [Q] Get Note 2 or wait for Galaxy S4

If you want a phone the size of the G3 but with the reception (or other feature of interest) of the note 2; I would wait and see what the G4 has to offer; however if you are happy with the note 2 form factor/feature set then I would just get the note 2. From my perspecitve the note 2 has two flaws (which might be fixed in a future phone):
a) The screen is vulnerable if dropped (the newer phones are suppose to be better in this arena though I'm not sure if they will still be as scratch resistant)
b) I would prefer a phone a bit narrower than the note 2 (length is less of an issue).
-
As an FYI I do have a note 2 (which replaces the droid razr). I really only have two complaints (width which I mentioned) and i prefer the mail client (stock andriod) on the razr (and tablets) to the one on the note 2. I really wans't unhappy with the razr but i purchased it before the maxx was announced and it had rather poor battery life and after a year the battery life was just not acceptable any longer and the note was the only phone I found reasonable at this date (I would have considered the dna if it had a larger battery; and some of the applications I use such as xscope) don't really work well with the on screen buttons of the hd-razr).
-
I still consider the stylus largely a gimick though over time that view might change; i have small hands but the weight is fine - and the phone is significantly more responsive than the razr. One amusing thing I learned when er removing the auto wifi notify is the note 2 has very fast internal sd; something the tf700 (asus) should pay attention to (for those in teh dark ft700 has a bad problem with lag due to a miserably slow internal sd).

I cant imagine a more useless post, besides mine of course

I'm back from a GS4

I had a Galaxy S4 and I honestly couldn't stand it. Sure, it benchmarked higher than the Note 2, but after 8 days of use some of the buttons stopped working. Also, there's no bootloader unlock for the new firmware yet so we only got root. I used ODIN to go back to the stock firmware and wiped the device, went to Verizon and got my $650 back. I'm glad I'm back here.

I do! :good:
I got the S4 on release and I like it. Just put my SIM in my Note 2 today for the first time since I got the S4 and it really does perform. The specs are higher on the S4 but I can't tell the difference. My only issue with the Note is it's size, which was the reason I bought it. I just can't do some things one handed, things I didn't think would matter. But, if size hadn't been an issue, this guy would still be my dd. Also, since I bought the S4 at release, it's unlocked and running PACman 4.3 and running it well. If I couldn't run AOSP, I wouldn't want it either.
I'm grandfathered in on unlimited data and buy all my devices unsubsidized.

Should've used that 650 for the note 3. I can never go back to a smaller screen, even if it is somewhat inferior from a hardware standpoint.

The battery life on the S4 was terrible even after tweaking the phone.
So far the Note 2 is far better.

I sold my note 2 in craigslist for $450, found a brand new galaxy s4 for $499. $49 to upgrade meh.
Even with a gs4 rooted with cm10, it couldn't hold a candle to my note. Sure, the screen was brighter and sharper, but the build quality on the gs4 is horrible.
Needless to say I quickly sold the gs4 on swappa for $550. Picked up another note 2 off craigslist for $375.
The only thing that can drag me away from my note 2 is a note 3. I just hope the note 3 build quality is better than the gs4.
Seems like Samsung's build quality is actually regressing with each new device

I got rid of my GS4 yesterday and will be waiting for the GN3 announcement in 13 days. Looking forward to a hopefully quick launch. Rumors now say S800 variant is all that will be launching first since the Exynos 5420 is having issues (go figure) so maybe Verizon will launch it right away.

after having the note 2, not really sure what my next phone will be. Tired of dropped calls in my house where HTC phones never had problems. Might try the femtocel route, but verizon wants me to pay for it. Moto droid ultra maxx is interesting, esp since I have plex working perfectly now so I don't need 64gb of media on my phone.

Should've used that 650 for the note 3. I can never go back to a smaller screen, even if it is somewhat inferior from a hardware standpoint.

I'd rather go for hardware quality than superficial looks of a device. Looks don't control the performance/quality.

[Q] Buy now or wait?

I just ordered the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 from amazon for $450. Originally I ordered the nexus 9 and amazon ****ed me, then the more I thought about it the more I realized the Nexus 9 4:3 form factor just didn't make sense for me. See I use my tablet 90% for youtube and watching hd videos (movies, f1 races, nfl games, etc). I realized I was going to end up with massively less actual viewing area for my videos going from my nexus 10. Not only is it 8.9in vs 10.1 in but with 4:3 I am going to have massive black bars.
So then I canceled my Nexus 9 order and decided to order the Tab S 10.5. It had been in my wishlist for several months mainly due to the screen. I am excited to receive it but then I went and checked out the benchmarks on the Tab S 10.5. I had thought this was a top performing tablet with the 8 core processor and 3gb of ram (yes I know only 4 cores at a time). Then I realized the GPU is weak and outdated, the NAND Is terribly slow, the cpu is OK, and the sun spider score is not very good (worse than the older ipad air?).
Then I started reading Samsung was likely to release a new Tab S 10.5 with a better upgraded processor and gpu in Nov/Dec. So now I am wondering if I should cancel this order and wait it out. I paid near full price so it's not like I paid $350 or even $399. I figure this refresh will launch at $499 and for massively better performance $50 more is no problem.
Anyone can offer some advice for my dilemia? I think I actually have 30 days to use the tablet before I must return it to amazon for a full refund, so maybe I could do that and then send it back if this new refresh launches in the next month, if it doesnt launch then just keep it? Thanks guys.
I had the Samsung Pro Tab 8.4 a close cousin it's a nice tablet.
I had been thinking of getting the Tab S but the $ got in the way Plus Samsung is famous for selling a device but never updating it.
The Crapware leaves a lot to be desired.
I recently sold the Pro tab and ordered the Nexus 9 then cancelled my order yesterday due to Amazon's order dalays.
This morning I've had a change of heart or common sense prevailed and so I reordered the Nexus 9 from Amazon and hopefully will get it next week.
Like you, It's a tough decision but I miss not having a tablet.

Looks like i have my answer. Amazon says: Returnable until Jan 31, 2015
So I am going to use this and keep it and enjoy it and if a better Tab S 10.5 comes out before Jan 31 with upgraded processor/gpu then I will return this and get that.

Sounds like a good plan. I was tempted to bite when the price dropped to $404 on the 3rd, but I decided to wait it out a bit longer. I have owned the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Player 4.0 in the past. While they were decent devices for their time, the lack of software updates bothered me to the point that I hesitate whenever considering Samsung products. The AMOLED screen does look appealing when backlight bleed is so common on tablet IPS panels. Depending on what Samsung brings to the table this coming month, or how low the price of the current S 10.5 drops on Black Friday, I might make the jump.

The lack of updates bother me too, but I will most likely root and run a custom rom anyways to get rid of touchwiz.

I cancelled my reorder again.
I just feel very uneasy with all the screen bleeds and button issues.
Don't these damn companies test their product?
I do NOT want to be their "Crash Dummy" !
The Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is back to $404.67 on Amazon, available in both colors.

Glad I could be of help Mike!
After one day of using the tablet I have a few observations and would welcome feedback.
1) Touchwiz is OK, not as terrible as what I have heard about it IMO, but I would prefer to go back to stock android or cyanogenmod. The issue is, its my understanding if you flash a custom ROM on this device it triggers something in the bootloader and you lose your warranty? If that is the case, more importantly it would risk my ability to return it to Amazon between now and Jan 31st. I doubt amazon checks for something like this but I am not sure I want to take the chance. I know rooting causes this bootloader flag to be tripped so I am guessing a custom rom would be no different.
2) The speakers on the device are pretty poor. I knew side spacing speakers wouldnt match up to my front facing nexus 10 speakers simply due to the direction but they also seem to be a lot less loud, less clear and less bass than my nexus 10. I dont really care about playing back music, the poor quality speakers are evident in simply playing back news stories on youtube.
3) There have been some odd lag/freezing issues. Most noticablely I was on sky's website reading an article and I kept trying to scroll down to read more and it just completely froze. after a few seconds it came back and was in copy/paste mode (my guess is from trying to scroll during it being frozen it picked it up as a long press, idk).
4) The screen is amazing, no complaints here, there have been some instances however that the digitizer didnt pick up my taps. perhaps this is related to the freezing/lag i mentioned above.
5) The wifi has been a little odd at times. At times it wants to connect to poor quality networks with low signal over the excellent signal wireless-ac networks.
All in all its a really nice tablet but I am not sure if I am going to keep it. It's not as fast as I expected compared to my nexus 10 (touchwiz likely to blame I guess?) and the biggest issue for me is the speakers. I use my tablet 90% of the time as a media consumption device to watch youtube and HD videos. This is a big reason I didnt get the NExus 9 with it's 4:3 ratio screen which kind of sucks for watching videos unless you are ok with half the screen being wasted with black bars. If the sound from the speakers suck (i never use ear buds, i only use the speakers on the device) then this is a pretty big drawback. I did get it for $399 now which helps but I just dont know.
Nexus 9=RMA
Buy this device at great risk. There's definitely a build quality issue with these early batches.
See my post here for my experience.
