Hi Titan users
I'm a current Android user and was thinking of jumping over to WP7 and Titan.
My question is, how is customization on WP7? I know WP7 uses tiles, can I make my own tiles and replace the stock ones?
I used Launcher Pro 7 for Android for awhile and I was able to customize the tiles in that.
Also wanted to know how the marketplace is compared to Android. I don't use a whole lot of apps but there are important ones I do use. Netflix, GooglePlus, maps etc etc....
Any advice in moving from Android to WP7 would be appreciated.

I've moved from WinMo 6.5 to Android to WinPho 7.5
From WM6.5 to Android - I loved the market and apps and games (for first 10 days). Then I got bored. As I only install about 9-10 apps max and on daily basis used probably 2-3 of those. But then it was boring boring boring. I used Launcher7 for about a year just to make it 'feel' like WP7. However all those tiles in Launcher7 are just big icons that launch apps. But after buying Titan yesterday, I've realised how much I've been fooling myself! The real WP7.5 tiles do launch an app but again the UI and interface makes you drool! It's cool, crisp, quick! Feels nothing like Launcher7. In terms of customization, like Launcher7 you can't rename tiles etc. But if you have an app that can be pinned, your bookmarks can be pinned, your contacts can be pinned, your fav recipe can be pinned, you fav anything can be pinned! The apps are pushing major updates now to support 7.5 Mango which has major benefit of live tiles - Launcher7 never will be able to achieve this! The live tiles in apps like BBC News, Scorecentre, FB etc - are much fun and gives all the info you need. This way in past two days I've not launched FB, Twitter even once to see if I had notification coz the tile said it as soon as I unlocked the screen!
WP7.5 - Market is tiny compared to Android, but I got all the apps I use apart from a decent forum app. All the apps/games I liked on android I found it free here on WP7.5. But if you are into apps and their numbers, you won't like WP7.5 so don't buy it. There is no official Google+ yet, but there are couple of workaround for now. I think major apps will show up in next 5-6 months or so in the market.

I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S (also used to have an iPhone), and I have to say the switch to Windows Phone was pretty smooth, and I love my Titan now.
The only nuisance I've had so far is getting my Google Contacts to show up in my address book... I couldn't find an option for "only display contacts with phone numbers" as there is on Android, so I had to go through one by one and pin my most contacted people for convenience - not sure if there is another way to do this.
But other than that, I love WP. Very clean interface, very cool transitions from page to page, good integration with Xbox Live, Zune, etc., I recommend it to any Android user.
As the person above me stated, the biggest difference between WP vs Android/iPhone right now is the size of the market. But most of the apps you use are probably on the Windows Marketplace in one form or another, and apps are slowly being ported over.
I have an HTC HD2 (no Titan yet). I started on WM6.5 with it and moved to Android (ACA Rom) loved it. I stayed primarily on Android until the end of Aug when I flashed my first WP7 Rom. It was a NODO Rom, I didn't really like it very much and went back to Android for my daily driver for a few more weeks. Yuki/XBMod's Rom was released at the end of Aug. I flashed that and have only gone back to Android just to keep it updated. When my HD2 dies, I'm probably going to go with a WP7.5 device. Even on the HD2, WP7.5 is responsive, smooth and quick. It meets my needs in almost all respects. Android is much more customizable then WP7.5, no question. There are a few things on my "wishlist". I miss Swype, I would like to be able to modify bluetooth so that I can have my BT connected for phone calls and still have the 3.5mm output for music. It's also missing internet connection sharing (right now, hopefully that will be remedied soon). No flash for WP7.5 and I can't connect to my companies webmail (both work fine on Android). You can't transfer files to the phone easily over usb and you are really tied to Zune. I think that's the one of the biggest drawbacks. I hate being tied to a computer. Another major drawback is that there is no way to back up SMS or other personal info and apps (Titanium Backup). You can backup (only when updating with Zune) if you are unlocked and can use Yuki/XBmod custom cab sender to backup (not sure about other pure WP7.5 phones though).

Official Netflix works great and gMaps Pro is a Google maps app, Bing maps is pretty good and Nokia maps/drive will be available in the near future. Unfortunately, no Google+.

This is a sweet looking phone. I've been a long time iPhone user and tried Android. Went back to the iPhone. Android was to buggy for me. Tried WinMo and really liked it. I did go back to the iPhone just because I am so vested in the Apple ecosystem. But if I had to give up the iPhone it would be for the Windows phone. The Windows phone is the closest thing to the iPhone in terms of stabability and smoothness.

you've got to remember though that most of android functionality are because you had it rooted! If you jail break wp7.5 it will have many other apps to support things similar to what you mentioned. However that said, we still have slower development on wp7.5 but I think one major update and 50,000 apps in just over a year is very positive news for fresh from the scratch OS!
I can connect to 6 emails and 3 social networks without any issue with contacts or sync or anything! That's where I got very impressed compared to android or iOs. In other OS you have to have atleast 3-4 apps to sync that amount of data with pictures!
No issues with work emails or work address book. We use outlook 2007.
I do have internet Sharing on this phone. It works fine! Obviously you won't find the real experience with a ported OS. Maybe Bluetooth might work if you use a real wp7.5? ;-)
I have also easily synced google, hotmail, yahoo and Facebook calenders. Not a single issue.
Best part is WP 7.5 NEVER force closes :-D
3.5 mm will be supported on Titan in near future apparently. However using connected media app its possible to link up. You can use this phone as a usb stick TRUE, but you can sync all you need via Zune so don't see this as an issue. Its rather safer knowing how easy it is to get windows corrupted if plugged as a usb.

I'm not sure if jailbreaking is reversible. I don't know much about it, but don't want to not be able to come back to WP standard. Because in future if updates stop coming to jailbreakon WP, then it's not good. Because Mango, Tango anything, keeps making it better and better...
It's not a jailbreak like iOS or root like android. It allows you to sideload apps from outside the market but doesn't elevate your privileges beyond that.
The Chevron WP7 Labs are done in cooperation with Microsoft and uses Microsoft's own Servers at some point to do the actual Developer Unlock on the phone. It is the same as the Developer Unlock but without the possibility to publish to the Marketplace.
Calling it Jailbreak therefore is pretty much misleading.

Any links to developer unlock? Or is it not possible?
I play scramble with friends, draw something, and words with friends with my wife. Are there any of these games on the wp7 marketplace? If not are there third party apps that are like them?

There is an app called "Spell it" on the market that is similar to "Words with friends."
"Words By Post Free" is almost identical to Words With Friends and is available on Android, iPhone, and WP7 so you can play all of your friends, despite their platform. "Wordament" (also a free app) is very similar to Scramble With Friends, except you don't play with one person at a time...you compete in a live game against everyone else playing at that moment. Your score determines your ranking and you can see how others scored, common/obscure words, etc. To my knowledge, there is not an app like Draw Something available yet, but there probably will be soon. Hope this helps!
Edit: I have found an app similar to Draw Something--though the reviews note that it is a bit glitchy. Hopefully this will be fixed by future updates. It is called "Draw and Guess."

Okay, so I've been dabbling with app development for a while now but I haven't found the motivation to actually work on a sizable project. I just don't have any good or interesting ideas.
So, I'm turning to you, XDA. Are there any apps that you'd like to see exist? Or any apps that you use that you'd like to see a better version of?
I'm not promising to actually do these and release them, I'm just looking for ideas to motivate myself to start on a project. Obviously, if I actually get something worthy of release, I'll share it.

I have way too many ideas and lack motivation lol I also have a very screwed up memory, like right now I can think of 5 ideas I had but I can't place them. One had to do with location but until I get home and find the notebook I write all my ideas in I couldn't tell you. Hell I can't even remember what happened 5 minutes ago with out seriously focusing on what happened 5 minutes ago
This is just my add kicking in but I wondered if I could parse an md5 checksum in android terminal emulator and it turns out md5sum utility is built it...neat!
The first app I ever wrote was born by asking myself, "What do I want my phone to do that it can't currently do?"
This made development much more enjoyable as it was something I was interested in and that kept me going and gave me the will to follow thru until it worked.
If you're looking to make an app for someone else, here's my suggestion:
I'd like a 1x1 toggle widget that does the following:
Toggle On (potato mode):
Screen Brightness at lowest
Bluetooth off
GPS off
Mobile Network off
WiFi off
AutoSync off
Toggle Off (radsauce mode):
Return to whatever settings I was using before pressing Toggle On

I have a bunch of baby videos (baby Einstein and whatnot) in avi format that I use a third party player to play when traveling. The problem is that I can't give the phone to my daughter because she presses a button or something that stops the video. Same with YouTube vids. So i have to hold the phone the whole time.
Would love a kind of baby lock that disables the touchscreen and buttons but allows third party apps to run behind it (like third party media players and YouTube) so that she can hold the phone herself while her videos or music is playing. It should then be able to be unlocked by pressing a combination of buttons at the same time or something like that. This would be ideal on those long car rides. You parents know where I'm coming from...
There's an app out there already that does something similar, but it's limited to the stock video player only.
How's that for an app idea?

That's a pretty interesting idea. Sadly, I won't know if anything is possible until I give it a try, because I'll be learning a lot as I go (I already know Java and I've studied some guides to making apps, as well as a book that I have, but it isn't enough to just magic a useful app together). I'll keep a list and I'll give each thing a try to see if I can pull anything off.

I will consider this one as well. On the surface, it doesn't seem like it would be overly complicated.

As far as media players go, Mx player locks so u have to press the unlock on screen icon to unlock touch buttons.
While it doesn't work for YouTube app, u can use it as default streaming and to watch downloaded movies.

Touch block comes to mind, last I checked it didn't offer a hardware unlock solution. It disables the touch screen, except for the notification bar. You lock and unlock from there

How's about an app that let's you keep your extSDcard in your phone so that when flashing roms, said app would protect it from being reformatted. It's a pain in the arse having to unmount it/pull it out.

I don't pull my external sd card when flashing ROMs and I've never had it get formatted. Do you use TWRP?
no app will protect you from recovery since there is no android environment to run the app. Theres also no reason to pull sd card from phone when flashing a new rom.
Iv actually been a lil preoccupied to do anything w/my phone. The only thing Iv done w/it is Zedomax's root method and have yet to flash any roms

My other idea wasnt gud so how's about this one. There are quite a few games still floating about that were pre android. I guess this would be an emulator for pre android games. One that comes to mine is a game by glu 'Transformers'.

There's a full java me port of that game, you just need to convert the jar/jad files and run it in an app called j2me player. Can't guarantee it will run but a lot of java games do
With JB android has started to meet expectations of using tablets and cells for audio engineering apps. I'm a comm engineer by day and run a recording studio by night and hate to admit the integrations of apple iPad etc work very well with multi track audio apps, up until now, android latency issues have preventd good audio multimedia apps so I would love to see more of that development. There is an app called audio evolution now which is amazing and touches the surface of android JB potential.

Wasn't the latency due to the fact that android didnt use a realtime kernel? Every distro on the PC side that I've used, I've had to patch or replace the kernel to get realtime support for audio
How about a working Bluetooth keyboard and mouse software? One that actuallys good pairing and better features.
Side stepping the Bluetooth connection would challenge you a little. The kcm and no file with matching dictionary would also be a good challenge.

i have just got a HTC 8X and am very disappointed to find that not only is Nokia drive 'missing' (although i had researched and knew thus was the case despit Nokia and MS promise that it would be available on all WP devices)
there are some things i love coming,from Android and there are a few frustrating basics missing ... Some are sort of overcomeable (word?) with other apps some less so (as far as I have discovered so far)
- battery percentage ...c'mon why isn't this in the notifications, the app tiles are fine but not real-time and must use up some battery to read from the system what the system could just display ...grrr
- persistent notifications? If an app notifies me and I don't respond immediately then it means a trip back to home screen to scour the tiles for an indicator ... Is there a roadmap for this or an app that helps ?
- maps ... As mentioned above the navigation apps or lack thereof is disappointing.
- keyboard ... Excellent some very nice touches ... As good if not better than the best third party keyboards I paid for on android
- multitasking... A little clunky and lacking task,management...any fixes planned from MS
- applist grouping ... Any news from MS on this topic ... The "named tiles" apps seem like a poor replacement
buy my absolute biggest frustration is that I did the research first with a friend,who had a Lumia 800 and discovered there was a viber app and a smh app ... Not realizing these "third party" apps are exclusive to Nokia. Sure viber has a "messaging only" version but this is no good if you use it for calls. Does anyone know if these are intended to be permanent exclusives or are they,just for 3 months or 6 months or something? I have searched but can't fund any official,info about this?
Skype is good but I can't make the video use the rear cam or rotate to landscape like I could in the android app ... Am,I just being dense?

1. Battery percentage > You can see it from Settings>Battery. Looking for it in notifications, too bad. I don't work for MSFT, can't help you there.
2.Notification> Coming soon. Was left out due to the lack of time, but is promised.
3. Maps> Am angry about that also. MSFT paid Nokia to use their maps, but Nokia still insist on having the exclusivity crap. Sigh. The lack of transit directions is a deal-breaker for me. If it dosn't appear, no more WP for me.
4. Keyboard> Yeah, its quite good. Although I dont like how the UK english keyboard comes with .co.uk
5. Multitasking> Works well IMHO. Maybe you haven't discovered that holding back is like holding home in android
6. Applist grouping> I don't understand
Most apps exclusive to Lumia should be for a short period of time ~3-6 months, but apps created by nokia should remain exclusive for the rest of time and eternity.
1 - I know ... was just wondering if there had been a similar announcement wrt to the notification centre
2 - I can't find a MSFT announcement or eta ... just lots of blogs referring to the issue

on the exclusive apps ... the frustrating point is that no one is communicating openly ... if Nokia were shouting about the great apps they had exclusivity on then that would be fine ... and I would have bought a Lumia
The task management is different in Windows Phone. Holding the back key pressed comes in very handy when you want to quickly switch between apps. It takes a while to get used to it, but after that it will be fine.
You have other drive/maps apps at your disposal, as far as I know.
App sorting is fine. The more apps you get, the more "sorted" they become alphabetically.
At first, there is a small gap between letters (like last app that starts with C and first with D there is a small gap). When the app list gets big enough, there will be clear indicators with bookmars for letters which you can tap to quickly get to other letters.
IMO, this is way more feasible than folders.
Yeah the back key works to get to the running apps ... but you can't close the apps from that view ... you have to open the app and then exit from the app again ... or am I missing something?
There are a couple of other drive/navigation apps but they don't seem great ... and compared to google maps they are awful. Nokia Drive is a pretty good competitor ... and is offline which is a strong plus
But if you don't want to sort alphabetically ... or if the app does "odd things with its name" ... like "XE" is filed under currency ... then folders are good ... and in particular for a "stuff I don't use" folder it is good to declutter the rest of it. I do like the alphabet tile system ... but it is a click too many (wouldn't it be awesome if it went to that view with a "big flick" of the app list!)
I guess this will take some adjusting from the uber-customization of Android to this ...
A click too many is usually deterred by the swiftness at which the click in executed. In Android, when you have loads of apps installed, the app drawer begins to lag, whereas in WP this never happens.

"Closing" apps does nothing, though. They are not running, they are frozen. Not necessary to go through and "close" things. Apps that "run in the background" actually install a daemon that is always running whether you start the app or not.
So don't worry about managing processes, in WP multi tasking is simple. Just go to the app you want to go to, then forget about it. The only time you need to close an app is for password protected things, for example the app photo lock has you type in a password every time you start it, but you can resume to it without typing a password.
Can these app be installed on non Samsung devices? I really like the look of the RSS Times Reader..
I have come from an android background and we could just install an apk file. Do we have a simpler approach that can be taken for windows devices..

Just to give a little more detail on this...
Only way you can "sideload" apps is with a Developer account. If you have edu email, you can get a free dreamspark account but othewise it's $99.99 a year (close to that, dreamspark 3 apps, Dev 10 apps limits) but, as a factory locked device, no you can not just sideload a app like you can on Android devices.
If the hackers have their way, maybe soon but, nothing besides dev right now...
in wp7 people had figured out how to enable the OEM store sections, i don't remember how it was done, but it may be able to be replicated on wp8

you need a unlock 4 your device...otherway u cant get out of the sandbox or get access to the registry...
and till now there is no unlock 4 wp8 phones!
they are good protectet by ms...but where a lock theres a unlock...so lets see what comes in future
