Disk drive mode - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

BASICALLY INTERNAL DRIVE READS AS CD-ROM AND NOT AS A PARTITION - HOW DO I FIX THIS?
Hey
Disk drive mode is killing me
I was one of the first to get this phone - I like HTC products
But ever since I received this phone I cannot access my internal storage when I plug it into disk drive mode. Why is this and how can I fix it?
I thought both internal and external are plug and play ready (meaning no driver needed to access to info), But for some strange reason my internal 9 gbs will not come up, my external is fine.
I would like to fix this issue today (searching all over the web for the answer) but I am trying to set up a wireless syncing with my phone and I am going to be using my external sd as my media and files and my internal for android system stuff.
I am thinking about formatting my internal memory but I need to first take the info out of it.

Replace Virtual CD on the HTC EVO 4G LTE
Every now and then, a mod so unique pops up that it bears closer examination. For HTC EVO 4G LTE owners, a mod such as this has appeared. When booted into a Sense ROM and connected to a PC, one will notice that the device mounts as two drives. One is the internal storage, and the other is a CD-ROM. Yes, a CD-ROM. Naturally, upon discovering this, the first step is to see if it can be used for something else. As it turns out, it can be.
XDA Recognized Contributor closeone has discovered that there is a file on the EVO LTE called PCTOOL.ISO, which is what causes the EVO LTE to show up as a CD-ROM when it’s plugged into a PC. Closeone explains why it is there and what can be done about it:
There is a file named PCTOOL.ISO inside the /system/etc directory that normally contains the HTC Sync Manager Software. By replacing that ISO with another, it’ll mount that one instead. Because there isn’t too much room to spare in the /system partition, the file should probably be kept relatively small.
There are a number of things users can put in place of the HTC Sync Manager Software, although not a whole lot of things have been tested yet. In theory, though, quite a few useful tools can be placed here, as closeone says:
1. ROM Developers can include a package that contains a copy of the ADB and Fastboot executables within their ROM. ADB would be useful while the device is on; Fastboot would probably have to be copied to the computer.
2. Because the ISO is mounted as Read-Only media, it could be incredibly useful for field technicians who need to run portable software, without the risk of being infected with a virus on the host machine.
Being able to run portable software without thread of virus is definitely something anyone could benefit from. Aside from being one of the more unique mods on XDA, having functionality like this on the EVO LTE can lead to various possibilities.
To learn more, check out the original thread."

Yeah I tired that already, its not plug and play ready.

I believe in TWRP there is and option to mount internal storage so you can access it from a pc

Yeah that works but I don't want to put my phone in recovery mode every time I want to access my internal.

No I am just looking to get my internal Memory in my phone to open up like a disk drive without the use of any drivers. (Basically have my my internal memory work just like how my external memory works)

Did you install anything to mount internal as a live cd? When I plug my USB and set to media sync I can now copy anything I want even if its over the 4gb max file limit.

Got media sync to work.
I had to delete everything inside of the internal memory to get it to work

New to the Rezound, quick question

I just got my Rezound today (it is a CLN Replacement for my Droid Charge). So all that I got was the phone and the back (then I also had to order the battery and back separately so I have two backs now), I didn't get any of the other stuff. So no headphones or manuals or SD card or anything like that.
So I took the SD card out of my Charge and put it in the Rezound and noticed that it shows up under ext-sd using ES File Explorer. Is there a reason that it does that? What is the easiest way to fix that so it reads everything properly?
This is my first HTC phone so it is going to take some getting used to, especially with no manual (I will probably download it later). So far it seems like a pretty nice phone.
Next I have to figure out how to root (temporarily) so I can run titanium backup to get all of my apps and app data on this phone. How do you get in to that menu to see what state S-Off/On is in?
After a complete power down, hold the volume down key and press the power button until it boots up. Keep pressing the volume button and the bootloader will come up. It will say S-On at the top.
None of the Rezounds came with instruction manuals.

This is my situation as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
until we get permanent root (s-off), i don't think we will have a way to fix the fact that the external sd card gets mounted as sdcard2 or ext-sd. you will have to just copy or move all of the stuff from your sd card over to the built in storage if you want most apps to read the data properly... unfortunately.
Like everyone else has said, we are currently s-off so have fun moving everything directly to your internal storage. There is temp root now thought. I reccomend clean took

you mean S-ON
So the Rezound also has the sdcard issue too
Is there some reason the app developer's wont provide
a option in the app, for the app to find its data files,
(in this case the actual e-books and related data).
It seems counter-intuitive to not support what is going
to be the standard (in HC 3.x and ICS 4.x). Google,
from what I've read, decided that fat32 wasn't a
good idea (ties to mickey$loth etc). Those OSes
instead use a FUSE mounted re-director to mount
/sdcard over a ext3/4 subdirectory to avoid the
Incredible's no app space but lots real space issues.
This also allows devices with no SD slot to have an
/sdcard mount point. As I understood it, those devices
don't even support USB Mass Storage (as it conflicts
with sharing the single ext type partition). Something called
MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is used instead.
http://www.androidcentral.com/ics-feature-mtp-what-it-why-use-it-and-how-set-it
Regardless of the USB mode mount issue, I can see not any logical reason
an app can't be told to look at specific path (for example /sdcard2/kindle)
vs defaulting to /sdcard/kindle) to avoid the wastefulness and silliness
of having to sync the internal storage /sdcard/<appname> with the
real external external storage /sdcard2/<appname> directories to cope
with the changes.
Anyone have any idea how to either automate the sync process,
or 'teach' the Nook and Kindle apps to look at /sdcard2 instead of
/sdcard for the data directories? I was hoping for a short term
way to sync the 2 sets of directories via adb (after temp root
if required).
If / when we get s-off / perm root adjusting the /system/etc/vold.fstab
to repoint the mounts to the places the apps actually look, (unless, of course,
the app devs fix the apps to allow an arbitrary path to data setting).
Right now on my HTC Flyer I mount the 2 filesystems as USB Storage
(on GB 2.3.4) and run a sync program on my laptop, awkward
but it works.
Thanks

No USB mass stoage? MTP only?

Just saw this in the Engaget review;
While the One X and S offer options to use USB mass storage or MTP to transfer files, your choices are cut in half with Sprint's version -- MTP is all you have.
Who's got the skinny on this? I'm not familiar to how MTP works.

I actually prefer MTP. Here's more:
http://www.androidcentral.com/ics-feature-mtp-what-it-why-use-it-and-how-set-it
As it says, you can still to mass storage with the MicroSD.
It is pretty simple, though... I think I used it for my old Sansa e250 mp3 player (it gave you the option between the two systems).
The way I read engadget's words was like this:
The internal memory, can only be accessed through MTP.
The SDCARD on the other hand, can be accessed as a mass storage device.

Thanks for the link, it was helpful, and I can understand why they would want to go that route, but what I got from that link is that there's no difference, in practice for the end user, between the two. Meaning even with MTP, you plug it into your computer, and you can still access and move files around. Did I get that right? Does it open as another drive on the computer like USB mass storage does? In fact, would it open as two drives - one for the internal memory, and another for the sdcard?

I read it the same way, I was just hoping that I wouldn't be locked out of the internal memory, unless I used the phone itself (if that makes sense).
If the internal memory is going to be laid out in a similar way to my transformer, then one option is to use samba filesharing and set up the internal storage partition as a share. This is of course going to require root but as i understand it the issue with the one x (and maybe this one) is the bootloader unlock and not simple superuser permissions. I have my transformer set up where when its connected to my home wifi network both the internal storage and the microsd card is shared as samba shares and i just transfer files in to internal storage using that.

Dropbox comes pre-loaded on the phone. You can also sync with Google Drive or a similar service.

I'm not sure which ROM you are using (probably stock), but with my Venom Viper4G 3.14 ROM, I have USB mass storage for the following:
system: NO
sdcard: NO
sdcard2 (ext_sd): YES
However, I have to do 2 things:
1. Disable USB debugging
2. toggle USB File Sharing to Disk Drive (NOT HTC Sync Master)
It's my understanding that Jewel (the HTC Evo 4G LTE) does not allow for mounting system and sdcard(1). In contrast, my HTC One X allows for mounting both system and sdcard, and it does so with USB Debugging enabled. The One X also has a Charge Only mode, but Jewel cannot.

Having issues mounting to the computer to use as a disk drive?

I plug the phone in and it opens the 'what do I want to do' screen and then closes it right away. And then just keeps doing this over and over every few seconds. Anyone else notice this?
I've had mixed results. Earlier today at work, on my Win7 machine, I plugged that bad boy up and it immediately found the phone and loaded the drivers. The phone then appeared in Windows Explorer as "EVO" and when clicked on, expanded to show the contents of the memory accessible to the user. There is about 10 gb free on my phone.
At home now, is a different story. I'm running XP Pro and can't seem to get the right drivers installed. I'm tinkering with it now but am not sure what to expect. I've also installed Airdroid, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet.
Update: Still no joy getting MTP to work, so I tried Airdroid and it works beautifully.
Try swapping the cable out. I've had similar results with a cable that would charge fine, but would give dodgy results when trying to use as a disk drive.

This worked for me. I'm using xp pro and it couldn't seem to find the phone with the HTC cable provided so i tried an old BB cable i had lying around and strangely enough it worked
Used the cable that came with it instead of my regular Evo cable and it worked fine. Weird.
did it to me too. I was plugging intop a usb hub. Once i plugged directly into the pc, the issue resolved itself. Dont use Hubs!

You should see a folder called sdcard. It's the name given to the 10 gigs or so available to us. If you have a physical sd card, I think it's call ext/sdcard or something like that. Anyway, there is a "ringtones" folder in the sdcard folder.
I think HTC stated that file mounting on the evo lte is different than the one x. If you wanna transfer files, im pretty sure you have to use HTC sync. If you have a memory card though, that should be able to mount as a removable device.
hope i helped
Hmmm. I see that in Astro but not when I plug it in
It seems like all I can do is select HTC Sync.

It's still a bug and should be reported. I plugged my 3D into the same cable on the same hub and it was able to dump the whole SD card over that connection, so there's something wrong with the E4GLTE if it can't handle the same setup.
I have a 32gb card and mounted as a disk drive just fine. HTC sync is for internal storage maybe?

It put it as /sdcard2 in my brothers phone
depending on how you're looking at it, it will either be listed as /sdcard2/ or as ext-sdcard
they both mean the same thing. the /sdcard/ by itself is internal.
any ringtones you want to put in need to be in a /ringtones/ folder, doesn't matter whether you make it in the internal or external available space
same thing goes for /alarms/ and /notifications/

You can put them on your sd card no problem. I transfered all my music over to my 32GB card on my computer last night and all was fine. Hooked up my 3D and also my LTE and just dragged the folders/files in windows explorer across the two drives fine...
Then to assign the ringtone that's on the extra sdcard(the one I put music on and didn't come with the device), all you have to do is when presented ringtone options click add and you should see the list of songs in there u added.....
Actually now I think of it, I went into HTC music player and got it to see the music before I did that too...
Also had google music sync up and download everything for offline use too but I don't think they showed up after I did that personally....though I could b wrong and its actually pulling the ringtone from my google music copy...

I see what you mean. I didn't see the 'Add' button at first. However that just seems to list ALL music on the device which is a bit of a pain due to the amount of music on my card. I ended up moving the ringtones to my SD card then just Astro to move them over to the internal storage. Not the quickest method, but seems to be better for keeping everything organized.

It's really dumb, but don't pick one of the two big choices at the top. Pick "Media Sync" in the smaller text options below those. As long as your pc is up to date, you should see "Evo" show up under my computer.

[Q] Storage questions about DNA

Well I love my DNA, love everything except the shortage of storage. I though heck, thats enough storage for me, boy was I wrong...lol
So my question for you guys, do you use the cloud to save excess data and/or can we use usb sticks/thumbdrives to hook up to our phones to gain extra access to data, like music and video data that takes so much room on the internal sdcards.
You can use an OTG (on the go) cable to connect a USB memory or even connect an SD card. Don't know if it works right out the box or if you need to be rooted, but it's possible.

Thanks man, that actually solves all my storage issues, thanks for taking the time to enlighten me.
I use usb otg helper to mount my micro sd card for additional storage. It also makes it easy to transfer files between phones/pcs. I can even back up directly to external sd via clockwork mod. Just mount it in recovery and then you can flash/restore/backup without having the files on your phone.
I use spotify for music, I purge my download folder every once in a while, and I only keep one nandroid backup at at time. I have no issues with storage.

For music you could use Google music, and use drive for your other stuff, such as files. Saves a lot of storage for me when you have over 1500 songs.

Getting rid of MTP/PTP

Please tell me there is some sort of flashable zip to get rid of MTP/PTP.
If I can't get standard USB mode on this S3 I'm getting rid of it, MTP is like the worst way of connected to a PC in my opinion.
All the downsides are not worth not having to mount / disconect the drive.
*Note : I use my phone for my work, MTP makes doing any one job over twice as long as I have to transfer the file to my pc in order to edit it, then I need to send it back.
With USB disk I just edit the file/photo/video directly on the devices drive, huzzah so much time saved!)
I tried SG3 easy UMS but it doesn't disable MTP with the rom I am using.
ive been lookng for ways to get UMS too. Easy UMS is giving me problems. Sometimes it just doesnt work and no drives MTP nor UMS drives show on my PC.
Im on Omega rom with Perseus kernel.
The storage mode has been removed all together as android no longer really supports it. Even Google has done away with it.

Has been said 1234578 times. No way for internal sdcard, easyUms for external.
That's it. I agree mtp sucks, not working on my Windows 7 computer. Easy ums works well here.
This is where USB OTG comes in handy
Thank you for the replies everyone.
Looks like I'm downgrading to my sensation then
Shall send some dissapointed emails to Google/HTC/Samsung etc though as if they're really trying to make mtp standard that's just silly. (Hell it's bloody useless even for media transfer, I put HD movies on my phone and don't bother optimising them for the phone so they're often rather large files. maximum average transfer I see with MTP is 5MB/s if I use USB disk on my sensation with same SD card I get 15+MB/s)
Shame though as some roms for my note n7000 disable MTP so was hoping the same could be done for the s3 :[
Not a big fan of the emulated SD card as well, just makes finding files in recovery a pain in the arse
If this is the way Android is heading looks like I need to find another smart phone OS D:
One thing that could help me keep the s3 is if I could automate easy UMS so when I connect the phone I get a prompt asking me if I want to mount my sd card. ( if that is already a feature, it doesn't work with slim rom) Don't really care for what ever is on the emulated sd card anyway so don't care if that connects with MTP.
( Please don't suggest I just plug the card into a card reader, I use a alluminium bumper case that bolts on so quick swapping is not possible)

It may have been an option if Samsung had released the proper documentation on this chip like they promised at first but then changed their mind.

i feel the same way about MTP but it's not that BIG a deal. Easy UMS is a good alternative. i had a Sensation as well and you couldn't even access the internal memory, you could only access the memory stick via flash drive. atleast you can access both internal and external sd card using MTP. just put the files on your ext sdcard and use Easy UMS for quick editing of the files. from there you can move the file to your int sdcard using some type of file manager.
