64Gb with NTFS - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys ,
I have a 64gb SD card formatted to Fat 32 as exfat does not work properly. Unfortunately downloading large files will not work due to the fat32 limits. So my question is can android address NTFS correctly ?
I run CM10 with Siyah Kernel 1.8.
Thanks !

Have you tried using the phone itself to format the sd card? I would suspect it would put ext3/ext4 on it which does not have the fat32 limitations.

The phone would use fat32 aswell as it's made default for the external sd. Also ext3/4 can only be used if you mount the card after every reboot by hand in the terminal/with a startup script => you can't use mtp to move files between pc and phone. I still wait that the cm team apploes the patchs that ext4 will be possible format to be used as on the internal sdcard

Hmm that is a pity as I was hoping to be able to transfer larger files. I was looking into NTFS and using a mount app, but realised I would not be able to use the Backup features in recovery as it may not see the SD card . What a pain.

Actually is there a way to possibly format the SD card 1 partition FAT32 and the other NTFS ? Could the phone (S3) address two separate partitions ?

I've been having this problem and its really ****ing me off. Tried allsorts. Currently using cm10 and tried NTFS mounted with paragon but the fs keeps corrupting and so I have to run chkdsk on it to repair it. Also it doesn't stay mounted. Tried 2 partitions under windows using acronis disk director, the second wouldn't mount under windows or be assigned a drive letter, so I'm guessing that's an SD limitation.
I'm just on fat32 at the minute via guiformat but if I play music from the SDcard it locks up and just stops playing and I have to reboot. Even did this in stock Sammy ROM as exfat. Also tried sd speed increase and tested my read and write speeds. These improved and I got decent speeds so I can't understand why this is happening. Its such a ****ty stupid issue that you just can't play music from a memory card on such a phone with all of these different combinations, its ridiculous.

I am using my phone for torrenting, but when I went to download HD films, games etc I discovered Android does not support file sizes over 4GB. So in other words, its stuck on FAT32. Is there anything I can do about this?
Yes but it is very complicated procedure. Maybe you can do your torrenting somewhere else.

(HELP) Anyone having issues mounting 64gb sandisk sd card on S III

Hi there guys
I have been having a problem with 3 sandisk 64gb micro sd cards. I always got them replaced but it is getting frustrating now. Obviously they are formatted in exfat format.
The problem starts when I copy data of over 30 gb. Once i copy the data n the sd is remounted or the phone is restarted i always get the message "damaged sd card" but when i read the card on pc through an adapter it shows the contents ok. So i want to know if anyone can help me so that I may not need to return the card this time around...

Try to format it first in the phone, then start loading data on it.

I also tried it buddy but none of the methods seem to work .. i also tried formatting it then copying data through sd card reader as well as the phone itself... does it have to do anything with some file system issue or kernel related issue... im on stock kernel rooted...

also had the same problem. i formatted the card to fat32 with 32xxx sectors with "GUIFORMAT" app for windows, the it works ok.
then after fat conversion, you can try to format the card to exfat using any app (not the windows one) search google, then it might work, didnt try myself as fat32 works great, and i can use it with the script that makes the card the phone memory, so now i got 64gb instead of 11.6gb of phone storage

how much fully card with data?
witch rom, kernel?
I have the class 10 64Gb Sandisk sd card too with no problems.
Card has about 55Gb info on it and I didn't format the card. Just put it into the phone. Recognised instantly and haven't looked back.
I have a 2nd SGSIII too with a 64gb class 6 sandisk sd card. Same applies but with a little less data on it.

CM9 and External SD Card

Hey,
So I have the latest version of Clockwork recovery mod which lets me use an external sd card but Cyanogenmod 9 ROM doesn't recognize the external card and in fact wants to format it.
I'm using a 64GB Sandisk card and the latest nightly build of CM9. Any help appreciated.
Your SDcard is formated to FAT32 or exFAT?
Because CM9 is not able to use exFAT
ExFat formatted sdcards are not supported because its proprietary. XM will never support it.
Reformat it to FAT32 and it should work fine.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
It's formatted to exFat. What's the best software to format it to Fat32?
CWM wiped my ext sd when I flashed new rom to so just updated to latest cwm touch as well... Lost my nandroid backup was on ext sd
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
It doesnt wipe your ext card, it should only be unable to read it. Use "HP Usb format tool" or any of the other tools you can find throqgh forum search. You're net the first to ask =)

I've been trying all the suggestions I can find in the forum to format my card to fat32 but nothing is working. Still exFat and not working in phone.
Would mounting the sd card in a usb connected reader rather than in a card adapter help?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I had a similar problem. After installing CM10 my 64gb sd card was no longer readable whether on the phone or a computer. I simply restored my nandroid backup to a Samsung rom and used the phone to format it back to exFat. I would suggest you let the phone format it for you.
On a side note, would using a exFat capable kernel such as Siyah Kernal enable exFat support on CM9 or 10?
/edit nvm, re-read the Siyah Kernel post, it says its supports CM9, AOSP and Samsung roms! exFat on CM9&10 here we come!
I made this mistake of putting my nandroid backup on my external sd card which has now presumably been wiped. Can re install base Samsung rom, but jp really keen to do that.
Let me know how the kernel goes, if it works I might try flashing it as well. Would be great to have exFat support. Will updating CM9 nightly mess with the kernel?

got fat32 working with HP USB Disk Storage Format and other phone
Took me some time, but finally this fixed it for me:
0) As you need to wipe the 64gb exFAT sdcard, first backup the stuff you want to restore later.
1) I did put the micro sdcard into an sdcard / USB adapter.
2) Then mounted this into my Windows 7 PC and formatted FAT32 with 'HP USB Disk Storage Format'
(free to use/download).
Do not use quick format, do a full FAT32 format, yes this takes some time..
3) Put the formatted card into another smartphone and just do a quick wipe/format again.
I used my (old) HTC Desire S for this with CM7
Did read this on an other forum, there a samsung galaxy s2 was used.
4) Finally put the sdcard in your Samsung Galaxy S3 with the CM9. :silly:
5) Restore your saved stuff from step 0. :good:
Now ex FAT is removed this sdcard now also mount easy on my main Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
You can replace steps (2) and (3) with the HP Usb Format tool: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool.shtml
It allows you to format >32GB disks to FAT32 on the computer without having to rely on another phone
64GB SD Card Now Works

Thanks a lot, your instructions worked. I did part 3 on my old ZTE Blade and now my Galaxy Note sees my 64GB SDXC card.

What partition is default with sdcards?

If you saw my other post, its similar to this one? My question though is by default, what partition are SD cards set at? I had read thru other website searches, that it was exFAT? If that were the case than my android phone wouldn't recognize a brand new 16gb class 4 sdcard right? Than in which case I would have to format the card to a fat32 format?
If this helps,my ps3 also doesn't recognize the 16gb card but it does recognize the 8gb...I remember formatting the 8gb one to fat32 which by process of elimination makes me assume the 16gb card is on a format incompatible with my android phone/ps3...
Which software would y'all use to partition the entire 16gb card? I can't use my phone as my phone doesn't even recognize the card. As a matter of fact while in recovery it tells me there's an error in mounting

I am attaching a very basic Windows tool to format SD cards to FAT32, simple!
Is it possible that this sdcard came with a different partition that's inconsistent with both android and my ps3...ohh and I haven't ruled out the possibility of having a problem with the sdcard slot. I've had problems with the 8gb one working but its working fine now. They are two different manufacturers with these cards....maybe this 16gb card isn't partitioned with fat32....

This kind of error only happens when I select tapatalk hosted forum, any solutions?

which FS for 64GB microSDXC card?

I know this is technically a question, but I was hoping to spark some discussion on filesystems in android.
I just got a 64GB microSDXC card and I know that the LGOG is compatible with it. I just checked and noticed that:
a. it comes preformated with exfat and
b. my ubuntu install is not cool with that.
I'm all linux over here, so I'd actually prefer something like ext4, or something more flash-storage specific (forget, but there were several flash-friendly FS's in the works way back) and I'm just fine with the 'other OS's' not being able to mount my microsd card.
The primary concern, of course, is what the LGOG is gonna require. At first I thought this would have to be exFAT, but seeing as FAT32 supports up to 2TiB, maybe FAT32 is still the only option? I tried ext4 in my xperia ION, and it wouldn't mount unless it was FAT32.
If you want mount it in CWM , I'm pretty sure it has to be FAT32.

good point, though at this point I'm unlikely to use CWM on this device, though, that could change. I've just read that many people are opting for NTFS on their sdcards in android to avoid the 4GB file-size limit of FAT32. I had no idea android supported NTFS, though linux support is quite good at this point apparently, so that makes sense....
I formatted NTFS (in linux, tho) and the stock LGOG firmware refused to mount it, so I guess I'm stuck with FAT32....

You can format the SD cart to ext4 using Gparted and it should be usable and much faster than FAT32. I've formatted my SanDisk 64 SDXC to two separate partitions so that I can utilize the primary partition for storage and the secondary partition for apps synced with Link2SD. Works quite nicely formatted into two 29GB partitions.

I'll have to download a live CD and try that out.
I'm also primarily a linux user. I have been using fat32 on my 64gb class 10 card and recommend it for convenience.
I did try exfat and although I did not run benchmarks, I think exfat is slightly faster (and I'm sure ext4 would be faster that fat32). However, you cannot beat the convenience of downloading a zip file straight to your card and installing via CWM all in just a few minutes.
It's no ext4 and so I lose a tiny bit of peace of mind, but it's worth it.

Yeah I formatted mine into one 50 Gb partition (User) and another 9 GB partition (apps) and Link2SD works great. However, for apps that download additional data into the obb folder it doesn't move that over. Another thing to note is the highest app that I linked only saved about 50 MBs. Not really saving that much space but after I linked several 50 MB and under apps, I recovered about 1 GB of space on the Internal. It's worth it and not that complicated.
I you want to try: Backup your SD, format it to Fat32, use MiniTool to resize the first partition, then create a second partition (FAT 32 and make sure it is Primary, Don't use ext4 it didn't work for me) using the remaining space.
EDIT: Even 9 GBs is too large. Anyone who is gonna try this, you would only need about 3 to 6 GBs for Link2SD. I also tried using GL to SD in combination with Link2SD and had some issues.
Okay, in the morning I'll make a 50gb the exfat partition for use in android and a 9gb FAT32 for recovery.

I think you misunderstood. The first partition will be used for files and recovery in android and must be FAT32. You can use another format but I haven't tested any others. I also know the recovery won't recognize any other format besides FAT32. The second partition can only be used for link2sd and the only one I got to work was FAT32.

I don't use Link2SD. Just exfat for music, videos, and map data and FAT32 for Android crap and recovery.
