Fairly experienced with ROMs, but motoflashing is frying my brain - Motorola Droid X2

My dad upgraded to the Note 2. Gave me his old x2. I've posted this before.
Anyways, I've finally gotten around to sitting down with this thing, and have gone for the giddy euphoria of a fresh hacking expedition to banging my head on the desk so hard i think i need a new keyboard.
I have plenty of experience rooting and ROMing. Rooted dozens of devices, many of them difficult. Flashed the crap out of my phone (oh, odin >_>) and my tablet (cwm goodness). But motoflashing is a whole new beast and i'm losing it. I've been doing this for 10 hours straight now (its 5:30 AM ATM) many hours spent trying to root the damn thing (most root methods failed in bizarre and spectacular ways) but i finally got it done. I now have a rooted 2.3.4 stock dx2. and i think i finally got a handle on SBFing.
of course the natural instinct is to go flash a rom. and since my current phone (droid charge) doesn't have a (functional) ICS rom, i figure, damn, this thing need to have ICS or higher on it. well... no. i've spent hours reading every sticky and search result thread i can find and i tell you, i still don't comprehend how i'm supposed to flash a custom rom onto this thing. I don't see anything about a custom recovery outside of ancient posts from the "ow wow, froyo!" era, you can't SBF-flash a ROM like you can with odin, and for the life of me i can't comprehend what bootstrapping your phone is.
so, could someone PLEASE explain to me in not-motorola-specific terms exactly what i'm doing here? i'm a pretty technologically proficient guy, i can figure it out if i just could get a simple explanation anywhere. hopefully someone can take pity on the motonoob and help me out here, i would be highly thankful.
(also realize i have been awake 24+ hours with zero caffeine and not enough sugar, so if this sounds like the ravings of a madman or if i missed something painfully obvious, i am very sorry >_<)

This is the custom recovery for the x2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...android) backup and recovery of your Droid X2
That tutorial will walk you through how to get familiar with it. Once you do that this is what you do. I'm going to use CM10 as an example.
1. Learn how to boot into custom recovery (link above.)
2. Download CM10 and JB GApps from the CM10 thread in development section.
3. Place both files on your external card.
4. Boot into custom recovery.
5. Wipe data/factory reset
6. Wipe cache partition.
7. Select "install zip from SD card"
8. Select choose zip from SD card
9. Select (flash) cm10- install
10. Select (flash) GApps- install
11. Reboot.
12. Install patched CM7 bootstrap found in the cm7 thread in development section.

ok, so apparently I did just miss something obvious. Looks like after I get the recovery its standard zip flashing, which I feel right at home doing.
So that makes my rant up there seem pretty stupid (and/or noobish) I guess ah well, ya live and you learn.
I'm gonna get some sleep before I try for that recovery tho. *clicks thanks*

Haha good luck.

What would you say the most stable 4.x rom is?

Our 4.0 ROMs are very buggy. If you are set on ICS I'd go with CM9... surprisingly CM10 is more stable and its Jellybean (still has its issues though.)

well that's unusual sure then, jellybean. Any reccomendations? I saw several different JB roms.

There should only be two JB ROMs for the x2. CM10 and AOKP. AOKP is still a work in progress and has more issues than CM10... I would start with CM10.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2

stupid question, but i thought the DX2 paranoidandroid port was JB?

Nah, It's ICS, at the moment. One of the AOKP Ports is JB though.

OK, thanks. I didn't see it anywhere in the rom thread.
Also, I got the recovery installed! Woot!
Time to rom =D

Haha nice, you're on your way. Just remember if you are using any of the CM ROMS, Paranoid, AOKP, MIUI you'll need the CM7 patched recovery after you install the ROM.

okay awesome. Can I have a link to that? * is booting into cm10 now*

Here ya go. http://www.mediafire.com/?pzz4413k6wggcao
Same install process, and it looks exactly the same, but it's needed for these ROMs.

No, the paranoidandroid port was built from CM9 ICS. CM9 was good but not as stable as CM10.

Best GB rom?

Can someone tell me the best GB rom out there and how to root it and stuff? Sorry I'm such a noob at this. I only have experience in jailbreaking lol
The best GB rom is the one that your phone responds to the best. Try em all once you get root. Theres a ton of tutorials on rooting. Read in the Development section for which way you feel comfy doing. There are one click rooters and then you can do it manually.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930 Start here.
^^ good list of choices for roms/kernels/radios but if you're not even rooted yet, you will definitely need to check the Ref/Guide page out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013013
Here is how to root, just follow along and everything will work perfectly. If you have problems hit up IRC or check out a couple video's on youtube to help you along.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616
As for the best rom, it is best for you to check them out, download a couple that look interesting to you (be sure to read on how to flash a rom/radio/kernel) and then try each one out for a couple days and see which one you like best.
Thank you all very much. Would you guys suggest rooting my TB even with this new OTA update?

I have rooted and un-rooted a couple of times and have found it best to be rooted. so much more freedom. I have my doubts about how much good the OTA updates actually do. A couple of patches/fixes and it will still be buggy. just my two cents...
bamf 2.1 hands down.

I've tried a bunch of the roms. The bamf 3 rc4 was my favorite for the first few days. It was very fast and I really liked some of the unique things they did.
I'm using Gingertheory now. It's similar to the bamf, but it even has more loaded in things so you can mod the layout real easy. I finally feel like I have a unique phone, and not just a rooted rom.
I loaded up about 10 roms in 2 days, so it doesn't take long once you figure it out.

Same with this guy. The Das Bamf 3.0 RC4 was awesome. little buggy, like i couldn't make phone calls to specific people, but others i could. Gingertheory = complete awesomeness. and it is crazy fast too.
Current rom: Gingertheory 4.5.1 soon 5.0
Try 'em all.
Just make sure to do a nandroid backup (through clockwork recovery mode) after any ROM you like.
And...
Do not use ROM Manager or Kernal Manager to flash anything.
Use Clockwork recovery....most developers will tell you the same.

UGH, anyone else having a flash withdrawal?

I definitely need something to flash before I go crazy!
NOTE: this isn't a "what should I flash onto my phone now" type board, this is just a "I'm bored and realized I'm going crazy cause I don't have anything to flash."
by the way, I'm definitely not asking for any ETA's for any new roms.
Lol I know the feeling. My wife has a bionic and she finally let me root it and debloat it. But she will not let me put a custom rom on it. I so want to flash dhacker ICS on it I would put eclipse on it also but she is on. 902 and nitro is still working on the new version.

I am a courious person not sure why I know 2.3.5 & 2.3.6 files won't work. I actually want to poke around with the Atrix Port files to see if I can figure out what it will take to port it. I'm pretty good looking for different things that link a common denominator. Whether or not I can do it is a whole different story. I have never developed. But I have played around with the xml files with and without Hickups.
Smali and Java I have not tried yet I would like to try out of boredom. It would be cool to drop down toggles built in for an app that can be changed out for another. Like I said Just Bored thats all. Probably long run I will defiantly crash and brick.

Best & Most Stable ROM?

Like the title says...
What is the most stable & lag free ROM out there for X2? I'm on Eclipse 2.1 & this wifi problem is killing me softly. I was on CM7 but I kept getting problems with it.
If you have a ROM w/ a certain version of it that you'll suggest, I'm all ears.
In what problem did u have with cm7? If ur willing to go back I'm sure we can help solve them, unless u mean HDMI.

im looking into romming too and was wondering the same thing. I want a rom that is glitch free.
I don't really have any problems with CM7 other than wifi can take a while to connect...you may have to toggle it off and back on to get it to connect. I have not recently had any issues with it staying connected. I can't think of any other issues I've had. My wife has a DX2 stock and I used it for about 5 minutes today....that's enough to drive me crazy
Quick Note....Search bar. This topic has been raised twice in the past month.
But while I'm here I might as well put into it... I've been on CM7, MIUI, Molten and Eclipse and Eclipse is hands down the best. I don't know that bugs actually exist on this rom. Miui has seriously video issues, Molten isn't up to snuff over all, Cm7 is solid but the wifi connection is what turned me away, it is annoying as he'll even with the wifi fix scripts. Eclipse doesn't have a single on of these problems. Not one.

Are you sure you are on the correct android build? Cm7 is fairly stable but it foes have its share of issues, none major by any means though. I would say eclipse is the most stable for the x2, and that's comming from a guy who runs cm7. Double check that you are on 2.3.5 for eclipse and not 2.3.4.

CadenH is referring to your kernel. It is from a particular blur rom & unalterable.
So for example if the rom wants you on 234 leak . Your kernel will be ...00005... & the rom replaces all but that & other locked partitions.
Has anyone heard/know of a fix for the LP icon changing in the MIUI ROM, I would say by far that the MIUI ROM has the most features and by far is the sexiest and one of the better ROM's out there. I am brand new to Android and have been in the iPhone Modding world for too long.
Once I get these files systems figured out and learn a little bit more, Ill be building and tweaking ROMs for the DX2

Suggest a Rom I can install on Mom's Razr Droid.

Ok guys, I personally have a S3 and love it, got a custom ICS rom on it (cleanrom 2.1). And my mom just got a Razr Droid, Im thinking about putting a new rom on it, something stable yet not a clusterfck /easy to learn for her. Tweaks with battery life in mind, performance, and full functional (like picture text working etc) Any suggestions? I would also want to put google now on there etc. I guess I have some reading up to do on this forum.
Eclipse ICS. I recommend this to everyone If you're not familiar, it's completely AOSP with a blacked-out look. Really nice. All features working. Also includes improved battery (in my experience), notification drawer toggles, etc, with some small tweaks here and there. Fairly minimal and easy to use.

Thanks, i just installed eclipse 1.3 (his newest one, he hasnt posted it here yet), than google now, Up and running smoothly. Now I had installed safestrap, can i disable that boot up option?
There's an Eclipse ICS 1.3? Could I trouble you for the link? I'm only on 1.2; I looked but could not find a newer version, so that'd be much appreciated l As for Google Now, glad to hear you got that working! I forgot to mention it earlier, but some have reported battery drain from it, so look out for that...
And I don't believe you can change the boot up screen, unfortunately :/ But I personally never found it to be much trouble. Just make sure your Mom knows not to hit the menu key and launch recovery xD
EDIT: Never mind, I found the Eclipse update! ...I was excited enough to get out of bed at 3:30 and turn my laptop on

[Q] ROM - looking for stability, GPS, and functionality.

I just rooted my phone and I'm anxious to put a good solid ROM on here.
Since upgrading to stock ICS from gingerbread (pre root), I've had nothing but problems, so I'm hoping a custom ROM cam solve this. My gps and notification sounds don't work, and the battery life has gone down the tubes.
I basically looking for a great stock gingerbread rom, or a stable ICS ROM that can provide me with the original stability and functionality this phone once provided. Suggestions? I am currently using the 3.0.35-siyah v3.4.2 nomswap+ktoonsez kernel.
Thanks everyone!

Believe me, I'd love to go from ROM to ROM, but I'm a bit busy (grad student) and I cant say I enjoy hacking my phone...the whole process freaks me out. Just doing this out of necessity so I don't need to go back to that stupid iphone. Looking for suggestions from people's experience. I love my gs2 and this is a last resort to get it working like it did before that HORRIBLE ICS roll out.
I hear AOKP 7.1 is really good with battery and GPS, but I alo hear the kernel is what determines battery. Truth on both fronts?

If you want stability go for Shostock2. Its an ICS rom but it is one of the most stable roms out there IMO

Where are u finding aokp 7.1? U have an i777 not a skyrocket or i9100 right
Sent from team Pirate headquarters using Beanacle ROM. As soon as he builds it.
Rom xyz is best for battery but qrs is faster. Ghi is more customizable, but you will find mnop to be the best all around package.
See how that works?

If you're looking to replace stock gingerbread, then as 122ninjas said I would recommend going with ShoStock2. It's my daily driver. If you go with AOKP or another AOSP type ROM, You'll have to find substitutes for all the touchwiz -based applications that you're used to.
[puts on tinfoil suit for recommending a ROM]

Totally agree. I ran this for a long time before going to AOKP JB. If you don't want JB, ShoStock is the best ROM out there IMO.

Oh god no! Someone less informed then you is asking a question! Run for the hills! Burn him at the stake!
If this guy at the site isn't as trustworthy as I felt, let me know and point me in the direction that YOU would prefer to see me take. I'm here because I'm open to suggestions and I'm aware most of you here are extremely knowledgable in a subject I'm not.
So, with that being said....
What do you suggest?

I could say the same thing for PhoneBricker even though it is no longer supported. Point is, as you know ninja, ROMS and kernels play differently on each phone. Also, each gives a unique user experience.
OP, flashing correctly takes about 10-15 minutes not including download time. So, not having time doesn't work as a reason. Not being rude. It's easy to do while you're:
Taking shower
Using the restroom
Washing the dishes
While you're surfing FB on your laptop/PC

Nice, Ill give shostock a go today. Gotta admit, the AOKP Jb stuff looks awesome with all the customizable options, but I feel with more bells and whistles comes more issues. I assume JB ROMS aren't going to be as stable.

Really? It takes me 3 minutes to flash something and restore everything.

No offense taken! I think my trepidation comes more from my experience with this phone....I did that official ICS update and it ruined my phone. Got a new one, and a ton of bugs made me frustrated. I finally did the root (which was stupid easy....like...really easy.) so I have a bit of confidence now.

Once you start flashing stuff with CWM the deepest trouble I have been in is needing a factory reset. But if you are really scared then go ahead and download all the return to stock + root files and mobile odin and stuff. I just did that in case of emergencies.

Takes that long for the ROM to flash. Then add kernel cleaner and Gapps. Then reboot + re-optimization... Taking closer to 10 minutes. Add a few more minutes and you've got a great estimate of 10-15. EVERYONE has 10-15 minutes in their day to flash a ROM considering it's hands off once you press "go". See my examples.
The post above this has a great tip for anyone who wants to be prepared for the worst.
