I just picked up the TB and this is my first real Android phone, I had been hanging on to an old HTC vogue and running android on it dual with windows 6.5.
Glad I made the upgrade and wanted to lock in the 29.99 unlimited plan on a 4G phone. With that said I have a few questions regarding tether.
I have used tether on my vogue for years through the windows 6.5 internet connection sharing, never been charged and tether 6 hours a day everyday for last 3 years.
I see the Thunderbolt has a "internet connection sharing" mode under the wireless settings area, now my question
Is this the same as the internet sharing in windows mobile and would verizon charge me if I use it on droid? I guess a better question would be why bother using easytether or pdanet if its built into droid?
A friend has a droid X and said he doesn't have "internet connection sharing" mode under his wireless settings.
I use an older pc at work for this and it doesnt have wifi, so I prefer to tether with a usb cable so it charges the phone as well.
in regards to the TB, I like it alot, one thing I found stupid was the fact they put the usb/charging port on the opposite site of the kickstand hinge, so you can't have it charging while using the kickstand because the port is facing the surface of the table..wow
Because those are the VZW tether options. IOW, they "see" when you are using those and charge you for the tether data plan. Just wait till it's rooted. (actually you have till may 15th to use the VZW one for free.)
Speaking of which, has anybody else used it yet? Mine kept restarting every few minutes last night when I was testing it out and wouldn't just stay on. Anyone else had any similar problems?
Right now tethering is free with the mobile hotspot until may. I don't know if the USB tethering built into the phone is free but I would assume that its until may also. Once we have root though we should be able to tether for free no matter what using third party apps.

I see but what I am saying is I have used the built in internet sharing in windows mobile for years, never charged. no third party apps, nothing just what came on the phone from verizon
Oh, well I can't answer whether or not they will actually start charging after may. I know the one time I tried to use the builtin app with my D2 it came up to a verizon start page and said I needed to upgrade my plan or some nonsense like that. Ever since then I have just used wireless tether from the market after rooting.
update..I went ahead and tried out the "internet sharing mode" under wireless & network settings, connected to my Windows 7 netbook, was prompt to install the drivers, then it works, no verizon page warning me about having a plan or anything.
I read in previous versions on Android this was not built in, in Froyo 2.2 it was built in, verizon and other carriers generally disabled those features in the past but it works on the thunderbolt. If they charge me i'll raise hell since I have been tethering unpaid for 3+ years.

Not sure how that statement would help your case.
I have been using ICS for free on my WinMo devices too. I wasn't using the stock ROM on them though, I was running custom ROMs, so maybe that was the reason.

may not, but I will point out the fact I never been charged for it prior and i'll happily cancel my account and go elsewhere for service, regardless of fee's for getting out of contract. Just saying since I have yet to be charged for tethering unless I get notice from vzw stating I need to purchase a tethering plan I will continue to use it, if it works out of the box with no warnings about it being a paid feature I will not pay for it.
ok so look i know this is an app, but lets be honest how many of you actually go in that sub forum?

foxfi is a new wifi tether app that promises no root required, is free, and claims to have a fairly high rate of allowing tablets to connect. saw it in the e4gt forums and figured you guys might like to know . it claims most moto phones, gf is on hers so i cant verify if photon is one of them :/...
edit: ok just tested, tethered my e4gt to my gf's photon XD
no hacks or nothing needed we are both unrooted stock, it didnt like trying to tether with 4g tho, so its 3g speeds only :/
Sweet find for those who aren't rooted!

I know you said no root required, but will it work on a stock rom and if so, will a carrier still be able to see if you are tethering like they can if you use wifi hotshot on a stock rom?

fyi....I just had total success with foxfi generating a hotspot for an ipad 2 and a transformer prime tablet from a Droid Global 2.

my gf's photon is stock 198_7, works fine... as for if sprint knows i guess we will find out when our next bill comes huh?
I tried it on a photon running 198-7, flashed fresh this afternoon, rooted, unlocked bootloader with CWM applied. No go. FoxFi appears to initiate the stock hotpot app which in turn results in the IP registration error you get when launching the stock app. Tried with wifi on, but not connected, and with wifi off both suggested as troubleshooting steps by FoxFi.
Curious what others are experiencing using a blur rom
yea it will give taht error, but from what ive seen let it sit for 3-4 mins and it will finally re-register

I have also made the connection on my Photon at 3g speeds. Is there anything at all that can be done to make it work at 4G speeds. My 4G does not disconnect when I am using it as a mobile hotspot. It appears that it is the FoxFi app and not the actual phone causing this issue.
Moto Photon Foxfi only in 3G mode and Alternative 4G tethering
I too believe that it is FoxFi that is causing the disconnection in the 4G signal when trying to activate it on the Motorola Photon (MB855). An alternative would just to grab your USB cable connect your laptop directly to your phone and get PdaNet app (I know this works on Windows with an Android Phone) and you can connect to the 4G. (with great speed too, I have gotten 1+ MB/s downstream) It's not wireless but at least it won't kill your battery and you can charge your phone at the same time!
And if you feel bad because all your friends stare you down because you are the only one connected you can get Virtual Router from codeplex website and you can turn your laptop into a hotspot
hopefully there will be a fix or a different application that does not require root
feel free to pm me with suggestions or questions

I got an update from PDAnet and FOXFI was the update and it works great. I have a Droid 3 and am not rooted.
Does it work with 4G? Or 3G.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
It works with 3G on my Droid3.
I'm rooted on my SE4GT, and pc sees Android34, but cannot connect.
I disconnected 4G also.
In FoxFi, in the upper right hand corner, there are Bytes that keep flashing from 1K/316 to 1K/0 etc. Don't know if that's an issue, whether the app is activated or not.
this is working great for me......I'm stock rooted on ek02. haven't checked 4g, but 3g works like a champ. i didn't have to modify anything.... i can imagine it probably won't be on the Android market long.
My acer a500 tablet see's the connection fine
It does not work on Xperia Play for Verizon. Hotspot starts but when connected to takes you to Verizon's hot spot page.

I can't believe I'm the only person to experience this.
Steps to recreate the issue:
Follow steps to remove flag using SQL Lite (Entitlement = 0)
Turn on WiFi connection and wait for it to connect
Lauch WiFi Tether 3.1 pre11 beta
Watch WiFi connection get turned OFF AUTOMATICALLY
Watch 4G LTE Turn on AUTOMATICALLY
Watch Verizon profit
Why??? Are we just not able to tether via wifi ? why is it called wifi tether? You mean 4G Tether right?
Also just tired FoxFi Tether and what do you know? WiFi mode has failed on your phone. Please use Bluetooth? LOL what is this garbage? is this a Verizon/Motorola thing?
Have never, ever seen this happen on HTC/Samsung phones.
Anyone pls?
ok, my first flame of the month: please take a logic 101 course, then reread your question. thank you!

I don't. I just can't understand why it won't work? Does your phone turn off wifi?
It shouldn't. It should let me run tether through my net connection or any damn connection I choose, not Verizon. Yet it keeps turning it off. Turning off my connection. It's odd, strange. I feel like I'm being controlled and oppressed by "the man!"
First phone I've encountered that forces Wifi off (a perfectly good connection) to switch over to 4G/3G. I just find it strange.
I'm new to Motorola phones, well I had the v120c in 2000 So far they're quite strange compared to HTC/Samsung.
Okay well first off... I don't know why you did the SQL edit because you're using a third party app anyway.
Secondly... I can't name a phone where you can tether a WiFi connection into another hotspot... There'd just be no point. Your connection will always be equal to or worse than your phone's, so you might as well just connect directly.
You're talking about internet pass through. Where it takes an existing connection whether it be wifi or 3G/4G and let a device use that for internet. What you're doing is data wifi tethering. Where it turns off your wifi radio and turns your phone into an access point so other can connect it and use your 3G/4G data to connect to the internet.

This program enables tethering (via wifi) for "rooted" handsets running android (such as the Android DevPhone 1). Clients (your laptop for example) can connect via wifi (ad-hoc mode)and get access to the internet using the 3G, 2G mobile connection which is established by the handset.

WiFi Tether does exactly what it says it does.
If you want to use your phone as a WiFi share to connect a computer that doesn't have WiFi then you'll need something like PdaNet instead.

Wifi tether uses your phones data connection to the carrier as the source and tethers another device using the phones wifi radio. This is the definition of wifi tether.
None of the aftermarket apps will work. The only way I've got this to work is using the SQL hack and using the native wifi hotspot app.
To use your device in this fashion the wifi radio must drop its connection to your wifi router, connect to 4g or 3g and convert the internal wifi radio into a wireless hotspot. This is normal behavior.
What your referring to is internet pass through as was previously mentioned

It sounds like he wants his phone to rebroadcast whatever wifi network he's connected so other devices can connect to it.

From what it sounds like, perhaps he is wanting to share a protected wifi network using an unprotected hotspot? *shrug*
Perhaps he wants his phone to be like a USB wireless adaptor that connects to a wifi ap and not use 4g? (kinda want to know how to do that myself). I was able to with no problem on a g2x

Just to test it out the capacity, tempreture etc. That's all. Never had a phone that forces WiFi off when you try to share the connection, even though, it's logical since you would need a connection in the 1st place.
I've since found out this can't be done on this phone.
FoxFi - "WiFi mode has failed on your phone"
If i am not mistaken, he is trying to use his pnone as a WiFi hotspot, using FoxFi (same as i am trying to do) using his data plan, but FoxFi does not seem to be working. I have the exact same issue, wheter using WiFi or Bluetooth, my laptop can not connect.
Any ideas?

I'm new at this, and so I appreciate any help offered. Here's my problem, and it seems to affects the masses:
Droid Razr -not Rooted
ICS OTA
Foxfi will NOT work on my Razr. I've deleted, uninstalled, reinstalled and still NOTHING.
Some folks insist it works, well, it may on their phone, but NOT on mine.
I have 2 Razrs in the house, and it fails on both. All it does is suggest Bluetooth, and that fails, too!!!!
Any or all help is so very much appreciated. Paying for 4gb data, and only use 1gb is kind of silly. I continue to pay because new share plan would cost more.
Thanks!

Actually how about a router that's running wpa2 and a PSP that only supports wpa? My other radio on my router is 5GHz which my phone can't see. So wifi tether makes sense. I'm forced to use my mobile connection because wifi turned off.

I disagree.. when i was on GB, i used SQLight to modify my hotspot to give myslef free tether, WITHOUT an app, just used stock one...but since ICS update, I can't do it.. does anyone know how to bypass it? SQlight won't open in ICS now...?!?!
A friend of mine recently purchased a Razr Maxx xt912. He has a unlimited data plan and wants to make use of the tethering ability without having to pay Verizon the extra 20 a month. He last phone was the Droid X2. Which I rooted and bootstrapped and loaded CM7 onto it he loved it wants me to do the same with his Razr. My question is, Does anybody actually know the method of how Verizon determines if your trying to tether? I thought it may have been something built into the stock ROM, but that doesn't make sense since you can get a tethering app and it bypasses that security check. My other questions are, Which ROM should I try and which is the most reliable he is a paramedic and uses hes phone actively for the job. I have read that CM7 does make one for Razr, but I cannot find it on these forums.
Download Foxfi from the market. Works like a charm.
Yes, FoxFi... it's free and it works. Not exactly like a charm... occasionally, I have to shut the hotspot off and restart it once or twice before my tablet sees it. But overall, it's a great app, gives me good speed, and once connected, a stable internet connection. With a strong 4G signal, I'm consistently 25mbps+ down.
You know Koush right? Here's some information about his Wifi-Tether app: http://goo.gl/5dkha
It is said that the provider doesn't notice that you're tethering with this app, it's being logged as a normal mobile connection.

+1 for Foxfi. Works as described.
If it's only a single device, laptop, iPad, etc. why not just use bluetooth PAN??
Free, easy and take less battery than WiFi.
wow! staring me in the face & i never thought of it. has anyone tried this, i don't have time now.
It looks like the Droid DNA has some tethering/hotspot connectivity issues when connected to some Apple devices such as the iPad. The 4g connection would just drop on a random basis when tethering using the official options in settings. Hotspot issues have somewhat been confirmed in the Slashgear review of the phone. Anyone have any solutions?
I'm glad somebody posted this. I was at the airport, all excited to try out my fancy new hotspot, but got disappointing results. It initialized fine and my computer was able to connect to both the phone and the internet. But the 4G constantly dropped to the point where it was basically unusable. I'd get ~30 seconds of blazing fast speed, followed back a DNS lookup error that would persist for seconds to minutes. Hoping it's a software issue.
I have not had any problems with my hot spot. I was able to play a few hours of CoD black ops 2 with no lag or disconnections.

I've also not had any hotspot problems. I'm rooted though and using wifi tether from the market and it has been working flawlessly. It has an option to ping servers and download a few packets at set intervals in order to prevent DNS issues and connection drops, works like a charm.
I think issues with the stock wifi app is common on Verizon. Before my DNA I had a droid Incredible that had connection issues. If only doing light web browsing the app seemed to work ok, but if you went to a site with a large number of images, or tried to watch a video, or download a file it often would lose the network. I looked into the problem and it seems like the app had issues with most phones. My solution was to root and install Wifi Tether. Not only do I like the functionality of Wifi Tether better but i never had anymore issues after installing it.
With my DNA the stock app seems to be much better. I've been getting download speeds around 15-30 Mb/s all day. I'm still considering rooting for Wifi Tether though for the functionality and stability.
I have to return the DNA because I need to be able to tether to my iPad and Macbook. The phone does tether properly to my Windows 7 notebook though. I really don't feel like using a third party solution for tethering/hotspot functionality.
I have problems when I use my iPad. Very annoying.

I picked one up on launch day and used it for about a week, everything was fine except the data dropped repeatedly with the Mobile Hotspot app. I went back to the store I bought it from and there wasn't any more! They found a store at Stonestown that had 2, so I zipped over there and they swapped it out. We tested it by swapping out the Sim card on the original unit, after I also did a factory reset, but it was still bad. So got a fresh one and it seems to be better but when I first turn Mobile Hotspot on, it drops a couple times but then its good and stable. Not ideal, but usable whereas the first one was not. Hopefully they'll give an update for this, it'll be super badass when this is solid.
I'm still having issues with my DNA hotspot. It works for a few minutes, then the connection drops.
Internet works fine on the device itself, but tethered devices have problems.
I've tried in multiple locations. I've tried with the following devices: iPad, Android tablet, MacBook Pro, Dell Windows laptop. The result is always the same. My devices are able to connect to the hotspot on the DNA, Internet works briefly, then stops working.
Made a few calls to Verizon tech support, and I've done all the troubleshooting with both tier 1 and tier 2 reps. Next step will be swapping out the device at the store...
Glad to see I'm not the only one having these issues... Tethering to either my iPad or Macbook pro over wifi is horrible. My workaround has been to use USB or bluetooth tethering instead. I haven't tried any of the 3rd party tether apps yet, though since I'm rooted I'll probably get them going at some point.
I just swapped out my DNA at my local Verizon store. So far, the results have been mixed.
My connection pauses briefly, then kicks back in after 20-30 seconds. This is slightly better than before--my connection just plain stopped.
Laptop and Android tablet are faring better than my iPad. The connection with my iPad 4th gen. freezes and doesn't come back.
Verizon reps said there were no known issues. But clearly I am not the only person having problems with hotspot.
Tempted to root, cyanogen mod, and wifi tether the old fashioned way...
Either that or take my DNA back and just get the iPhone. By the way, my wife's iPhone 5 is attached to my account and works flawlessly with all devices and in all locations. Her smug smile is starting to grate on my nerves!
Never used the stock tether app but i use the rooted wifi tether app with the following settings as my main source of internet on my laptop without any issues
Profile - HTC rezound
Method - Netd-Ndc (master)
Wifi-Driver reload - (check)
MSS clamping - (check)
Routing fix - (check)
I don't have any issues when tethering with my Windows 8 installation, but tethering with my Linux installation has been iffy.

I was afraid of that. I've heard of other people having problems with other HTC phones and the Apple devices that try to tether. Guess I'll just have to wait for the fix.
Well, I called VZW today, they had told me that it IS a known issue and HTC has not responded yet... so they forwarded me to HTC and HTC had told me I needed to send my phone in. I called VZW back and they are sending me a new device! will follow up once I get it.
For me its my Android Tablet and Windows 8 PC that is connecting to my phone. So its not just apple products.
On my third DNA already. Still having the same problems with hotspot. At this point there is no sense in swapping devices. Guess i will just have to wait for them to fix it with a patch.

Just installed the Wifi Tether App from the app store, and used the settings that Cdoan34 posted above, it it works reliably for me. I think there's something messed up with the way the stock tether app interfaces with the radios or something. Using the stock thether app you can see the 4G/3G icon flap on and off like the phone can't keep the data connection up.
