Will it lock after unrooting? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my vibrant to use it on AT&T, but i i want to go back to stock, so i was wondering would it lock again since i used the unlocking app from the playstore to unlock it and that needed root! and if it will relock, is there any way to prevent it from locking again when i unroot it? thank you

I don't think so. I have unlocked my phone almost 2 years ago, and it never got locked again. I went through countless number of ROMs, also ODIN to stock many times (the stock firmware doesn't have root by default). It always stayed unlocked.

Yes romitkin is correct, you will lose root when you Odin but you will not lose sim unlock. Once its unlocked it will remain that way unless/until you lock it.
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

[Q] Unlocking Question

Currently my wife's phone is unlocked. I am a noob and I am just getting into the flash/root android community so I upgraded her stock phone to JI6 on Eclair. As a result, her unlocking codes are not easily accessible anymore but the phone is unlocked. I'm wondering if I need to risk going through the steps in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822008&page=11 (under Helroz) to find the unlock codes for the phone or I can just continue flash in Roms and kernels on her phone.
I guess the real question is: how important is it to have the unlocking codes if your phone is already unlocked and under what circumstances would the phone relock itself?
Thank you in advance for all replies.
Unlocked as in.... you can change out the sd card? Otherwise, if you have already flashed a differnet ROM, kernel, or modem or whatever, I don't think it would be different if you did it again.
But I would assume once you're unlocked...well you're unlocked, right?
Lol I am unlocked...I'm using the t mobile phone on the wind network I
n toronto so I can say with certainty that I'm unlocked. The reason why I'm asking is because we have two viberants (one that I have the unlock code and one that I don't ). being the noob that I am, I retired to manualy root my phone (the one I have the unlock code) using the update.zip file found in the sticky noob guideline.that one somehow re-locked my phone but I had the unlock codes so out was no problem. That's why I'm paranoid now about the phone relocking itself and I won't have the unlock codes.
Your right about it not asking for the unlock codes after rom and kernel updates.I'm hoping the situation where I re-locked the phone is a special, rare, and unique case. I'm going for some confirmation on this.

Ok looking to root, but not sure about temp or not? and the bootloader

Ive been thinking about rooting my phone, but I wanted to temp root it first so I could back it up. Problem is it seems that temp root was broken in an OTA and I dont know if I have it. I just bought the phone so I'm assuming yes.
Firmware version is: 2.01.605.11
yes no? So if I cant temp root and get Titanuim back on then I just have to unlock and wipe right?
Also there is no way to get the bootloader back to saying locked right? Just relocked? I though I heard that you could possibly get it back to locked with a RUU, but I never saw it confirmed. Id just hate to have to send the phone back if something physically was defective and pull a 600 dollar charge on my bill.
with 605.11 you can not temp root the only way to go is with unlocking.
Now Ive had the phone a week and it seems to be fine, but if something is defective will then check it to see if its been unlocked after they send it off?
People so far have had no trouble sending back relocked phones.

[Q] I can't find the stupid question link on this section

Got a stupid question and can't find the stupid question section on this forum for the M8 as in the M7 section. But, I have a new phone which I have upgraded to . I am not new to the rooting and switching roms I have done it since the One X, but , can I flash a custom recovery without unlocking the bootloader? Reason is , I use a app called Privacy Star for call blocking and just discovered by means of me having two identical phones except for the color . One has all the OTA's up to Android version 5.0.2 HTC Sense 6.0 the other is straight ouf the box and no updates, software Android 4.4.2 Sense 6.0. The app seems to work fine with 4.4.2 but the app makes the phone ringer silent after a blocked call and it has to be put in recovery and recovered or reboot the phone to get the ringer back. I know that flashing a custom recovery removes the ability to take OTA's and want to keep the phones at 4.4.2 , at least for a day or two. So can I flash a custom recovery such as TWRP without rooting? and RUU the one phone with the updates back to 4.4.2? Make sense? I hope so.

I think someone did a "stupid question" thread for this section at one point, long ago. But nobody really used it, it didn't get stickied, and quickly became buried among the other threads.
No, you can't install custom recovery without unlocking the bootloader. But you can restore to stock recovery when/if you want to install an OTA.
You can RUU back to 4.4.2 if you use sunshine ($25) to s-off the phone; which removes the version check, and allows you to "downgrade".

Thanks, wasn't sure and its been a long time since I have messed with a stock phone . I really didn't want to void the warranty just yet as the phone isn't much over 24 old so far and wanted to let it "settle" in before doing any mods on it.

If you want, since the phone has older software (4.4.2) you should be able to temp root and s-off with sunshine ($25) which can also unlock the bootloader without using HTCDev.com. And HTC will therefore not have a record of you unlocking the bootloader. And with s-off, all can be returned to full stock (LOCKED bootloader, s-on, etc.) so HTC would never be any the wiser.
But also note that if you purchased the phone through AT&T, modifying the phone by unlocking the bootloader (root, etc.) does not actually void your warranty. AT&T actually changed their warranty terms a year or 2 ago. The only thing that voids the warranty are physical damage and water damage. There have been numerous reports of folks that successfully got warranty service from AT&T with unlocked bootloaders. But that is just through AT&T. HTC is a whole other story.

One phone has 4.4.2 software and the other has 5.0.2 software, I didn't catch the newest one soon enough and my wife did the OTA without me knowing it. The only reason I wanted the older software was the fact the app I like has a glitch in it with the newer software update and it silences the ringer . The app works fine on the phone with the 4.4.2 software I just wanted to make sure it didn't update itself

Question regarding SIM Unlock and ROM flashing

Dear community,
I unlocked my SGS3 for all carriers through a nearby shop one year ago. He told me I have two options: Either a much more expensive IMEI Unlock, or a much cheaper Software-Based SIM Unlock. There seemed to be no downsides to the Software Method, even though the guy there told me that I should not flash any new roms since that would destroy the Software Unlock (but resetting the Phone would be no problem).
As of lately, I have been looking into several new ROMs which look very nice, and I would like to flash them...but I am afraid that it would brick the SIM Unlock. Now here is my question: Is there any way to find out what that guy actually did to my Phone? And secondly: Since the S3 is already VERY old, is there a possibolity to unlock its IMEI? Or any other SIM Unlock Method which I could apply myself?
Btw: My carrier is "3" (Hutchison), Austria.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!
The s3 can be unlocked via code as long as the unlocker can access the unlocking code database.
Usually, unlocking the s3 via code or software is permanent. I have unlocked s3 i747m phones, using a secret dialler menu and code, none of which have relocked after flashing stock or custom roms.
Thanks for your help!
So, should I just go for it and try it out? Maybe it will stay as it is but I am not sure...
Has the phone EVER seen a 4.3 rom?. If NOT, you CAN do the nvram unlock method. Out of 1-10 on difficulty its about a 6. You MUST BE VERY CAREFULL!.
The fact it was done software tells me that it would have been a galaxsim unlock which "should" be permanent.

Yes, as far as I know, it had a 4.3 Stock Rom at some point, but I installed the official 4.4.4 Stock Rom later on. Thats why I want to switch to another ROM, hoping that the performance increases.
There was no official 4.4.4 for the i9300. It stopped at 4.3 but seeing as you know it had 4.3 the only way to unlock the simlock is to pay for it.
I doubt you'll brick the device as there is always odin. The i9300 is quite resilient and in most software cockups flashing back to stock with odin will fix it to the point of a "working" device.
If it was me I'd risk it and odin if it goes wrong so make sure you have a usable stock rom before you start.
IF it does relock your phone you can pay about £10 - £20 (gbp) to have it permanently unlocked for any network and it should be unlocked while-u-wait, taking approximately 5 minutes.

One guy already tried to unlock it using the IMEI-Unlock method, but he did not manage to open the menu where he can enter the IMEI-Unlock code - even after inserting a SIM-Card from another carriert, there came no option where you can enter the Unlock Code. IF the device is locked again after I flash a new ROM, I hope that it can be at least unlocked once and for all by the IMEI-Unlock method...
Did you try flashing the stock 4.3 ROM from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-I9300/ in order to enter the unlock code?

Thank you for your kind help, but there was no need for that. I actually flashed a new ROM and the SIM Unlock is still there! Very very nice!
A huge thanks to you all for offering me your help!

Relock bootloader

Is there any way to relock the bootloader on exynos s9+? Ive tried reflashing stock via Odin but the bootloader is still unlocked and not allowing me to use android pay etc.
I know knox will be tripped but there's no reason that I can't use android pay with a non rooted phone surely? I've tried the root checker app as well and that shows that I do not have root.
When I check in developer options it says the bootloader is already unlocked and the slider is to the left for the oem unlock option. I have tried to slide it to the right which factory resets the device but then on going into developer options again it still shows as the same status (bootloader already unlocked with oem unlock slider to the left)
What can I do to get my phone properly back to stock?
Thanks

Actually there is a good reason why google pay wouldn't work even if the device isn't rooted. There are Payment/banking (and other apps I am sure) require that the device be secure. With the bootloader unlocked the security on your device is severely weakened.
Did you root the phone at all, flash anything to the phone or do anything to modify it at all (something like this as an example). If there was nothing at all done to the phone other then toggling the oem unlock, then it sounds like flashing the proper firmware to the phone, unticking the oem unlock option and factory resetting the phone should work.
If knox is tripped then there is no reversing that. Google searching also shows this would be a likely cause as to why you can not relock the bootloader.. Once knox is tripped it is irreversible (this is because it is an E-fuse), not even flashing stock will not make it go away.
I think your best bet at this point might actually be to have root and then use Magisk to hide root from the apps you want to use. I'm not sure which apps this will work for but it's probably worth looking into since there may be no going back with your bootloader
Thank you for the help guys. I did suspect that may be the case and I wouldnt be able to relock but it seemed some people were able to.
Will just root with magisk and use magisk hide to make it work. Thanks!
