[Q] EVO 4G LTE or S3 for wife - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

hey guys,
I have had a Evo 4 G LTE for a while now and am fairly happy... for me the S3 and the Evo 4 G LTE are fairly similar... now both might have some pluspoints in one category and some others in another, but here is my question...
my wife is now on my old evo 4G. Her plan is up and she can buy a new phone...
Now the 2 i consider are Evo 4G LTE and S3 since they still seem to dominate the market...
My wife does not necessarily wanna root her device and she is not as involved as me...
Still are there any pros to having 2 same phones, that i am not aware of? meaning buying a second EVO LTE ?
Or are there any Pro about having 2 different phones? Any EVO 4 LTE Owner out there?? What does your significant other own?

If she is not into phone hacking. Get the iPhone 5.

If it was me, S3 for sure. The lte problems I'm having suck. Can't wait to find an s3 for myself.

If she can't tinker, get her an iPhone 5. I've had people constantly ***** and moan about android being slow only to find they never uninstalled anything...ever. iPhone is a smart phone for dumb people.

Evo all the way. That way any apps you share, any texts and pictures you send, etc. will all work the same. And Sense is more user friendly than touchwiz will ever be. It's the closest you can get to the IPhone for user experience (and the reviews and consumer reports back it up). The dedicated camera button also helps a lot.

S3 is the most overrated and overhyped phone ever. if you do not like your 4g LTE, look at the droid razr maxx hd, it has one of the largest battery while staying in reasonable form factor. Build quality is also superb. Nexus 4 is also a very good phone as it has one of the fastest cpu (quad core s4 pro) and the build quality is also superb. The only downside is it lacks microsd. The upcoming Sony yuga is also very good choice.

Get her the EVO LTE. My wife had the OG EVO and now has the EVO LTE and loves it. She is stock/no root and is not interested either. Being that she was used to the sense UI on the OG EVO, the EVO LTE was a perfect phone for her. Don't change it up by going with an S3 or even the iphone5, it will probably just confuse and fustrate her having to learn the UI all over again.

thanks for the responses so far...
I was thinking sticking with Android since she has my Evo 4G right now and also we have the same apps... and i can help more since i have never owned or held or used an Iphone... that would be complete new for me as well... and I am just loyal to Android...
anyways...
thought about N4 too... but that is GSM or? our plan is on Sprint....she would not care about SD card so much I believe.. she does not watch movies on the phone or watches podcasts... storage would be mainly for photos and camermovies...

I have my EVO LTE rooted & s off,and I must say I would personally rather have the evo over the s3. If she's used to sense and is abusive I would get the HTC evo LTE, however if your wife doesn't drop things or bang it around I would say go with the s3, the s3 is pretty bad ass when not rooted. I have both devices and I will say the s3 is easier to use. Not to mention the s3 is also noticeably faster

I bought the wife a GS3 on black friday and she loves it. But she is basically a noob on android and has no idea what the phone can even do.
A bit of background.................She was using an OG Evo, (I rooted it and put meanrom on it) she abused that phone........so for the last 2 months I gave her my retired Evo 3D.....in 2 months she made it look like it was 5 years old. Broke the red ring around the camera, the side of the bezel is coming off on both sides. So I bought her the GS3 for $50 on black friday.
She has no idea what root is other than its what lets her use her kindle on the train in the mornings, lol. I play with it every once in a while but I definately like the evo experiance better. But the only good I found for having 2 different phones was to actually see if there was a difference getting LTE on my EVO and her GS3. And for me there is no difference, they both hold the signal the same.

I'm in the same spot as you, my wife has an OG evo... her contract isnt up yet, but I have been telling her to get the S3 ( i have the evo 4g lte)... too many annoying quirks with the stock evo 4g lte... now if the jelly bean update actually comes... and actually fixes wifi bounce or the issues with the 4g lte signal... then i will be telling her to get the evo... if i could do it all over again, I would get an s3 ( I was a day one OG Evo buyer and really liked the phone)... just because it has a larger user base and more development as far as I can tell.

Still no lte fix on the evo lte and its been 6 monthes since it came out
gs3 with android 4.2 cm10.1

After owning both phones, the EvoLTE wins in some areas and the GS3 wins in some areas. I personally chose to leave the EvoLTE becuase of the 4G problems, locked battery, and constant Sense freeze ups. I don't think your wife will have as many apps, contacts, and need for extra batteries like me so you might as well keep the interface consistent by sticking with HTC since she is already using the OG Evo.
The EvoLTE has a better screen, camera, and keyboard.
The GS3 has a removable battery, better 4G signal, more intuitive software/shortcuts, and better multitasking.

4 G problems are currently not a problem here since no LTE is available as off yet... eventhough it was planned to be running by now....
I guess possible root from teh evo iw ould be more familiar with.... on the other side my mother in law has a S2... so she might be attracted to get the next model her mom got...The multitasking still buggs me out BIG TIME... but it is somewhat under control in Mean Rom i am running....
she does abuse phones... as far as just throwing it in the purse... that beeing said i still have a good Seido cover on my OG EVO ... so it absorbs most of the scratches... still she doesnt care about phones that much... they just land in the bottom of the purse...

Has she looked at the phones?
I'm the more phone techy one, so it may be just me but I'd be a bit disturbed if my husband gave me a phone with out my input.
FWIW, I had the Evo OG, rooted it. I thought about getting SGIII but I preferred Sense over Touch wiz and I liked how Evo LTE felt in my hand.
Finally, not everyone wants an iPhone even if the phone remains stocked and unrooted. I wish people would stop suggesting the iPhone as the default.

[Q] What Would You do?

Need some help as to which phone to keep and which to give away. I had an OG Evo and I loved it up to the day i sold it. I then purchased a Nexus. 4G and quickly fell in love with the phone. Exactly a month and a half later I bought the Evo 3d which is what I'm using now.
Now thst you have a history here's what I need help with... would you use the NS4G or Evo 3D? Take all factors into account (NS4G is rooted and evo 3d is not, NS4G is smaller and feels better in the hand whereas evo is a brick, evo has a dual core powerhouse and 3d capabilities, NS4G is single core w/ no 3d, evo runs sense (I'm def not a fan, NS4G doesn't)
Please post your feedback.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
If it was me i would say the Evo 3d . because it's more future proof with the dual core, MHL, ect. The nexus is a great phone too but i really like the evo 3d better.
I would take the EVO 3d without thinking twice but from your post, you seem to like the nexus better so I say keep the nexus, sell the 3d (you probably make more money anyway by selling the 3d)
Well...I currently own both phones as well and plan on keeping both. I've had the NS4G since it came out. Just got the E3D today and love it. Both phones have definitely advantages over the other. To the point that I dont want to get rid of my NS4G so I'll be keeping both.
Not to mention I have a tendency to switch phones rather frequently.
Well I wouldn't be buying an NS4G because I still have mine I'm just debating whether or not to return my E3D to get my upgrade back to upgrade to the new SGS II phone coming out

What's the use of dev support when you can't make anything for the phone? MIUI is easily my favorite ROM and it ran so well on the OG evo ans NS4G so I really don't know this is a hard choice!

with dev support all the good things come to the phone. i mean geez, this phone has only been out what 2 weeks. i think temporary root already means much much more to come. i am an htc fanboy so i am going to say keep the 3d but it's all a matter of personal preference. i have laughed when my htc phones get the updates and all the samsung people say "ours is right around the corner" i laughed at every epic owner that told me "i can wait a couple of days" when our evo 4g's got the gingerbread update, i don't think epic has gingerbread still(correct me if i am wrong). don't get me wrong i have seen samsung phones come out the gate blazing and have the latest and greatest but don't count on anything down the road.

Anyone coming from the GNEX to HTC Evo LTE

If so what made you come this way?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Funny. I want this so bad, but depending what happens, I may go with Gnex. I got my mom one for mothers day, and it's nice. So nice to not have ICS uglified by sense.
That said, I would prefer Evo cuz I could play with sense if I felt like it, or mostly just use CM or AOKP (hopefully, I'm just assuming there will be AOSP development). Also, I'm sure the HTC camera is better, and from reports, the processor is better.

Yeah the GNEX is really not that bad but I always want the most up to date phone so the evo would fit that category

I was really excited about the GNex pre-launch of Verizon. I planned to pick it up once it hit Sprint, though I expected Sprint would get it shorty after Verizon. I went to a Verizon store to check it out when it launched but was highly disappointed with the device. While the GNex is still probably the best looking device to me, the camera let me down, screen, and overall performance as well. I was stoked to see the HTC One line announcement at MWC, and new that the One X/XL would be my next device

Ditto. I was 100% sold on a Gnex until my Step Mom got one from VZW it was nice to play with but there was enough lacking that I decided to wait for the Evo LTE, That of course is not saying it's bad at all if there was no EVO LTE it would definitely be my next upgrade.
I have the gnex and am going with the new evo because I can't seem to get used to the on screen nav buttons. I guess I'm a stick in the mud and like the touch buttons under the screen. Added my wife to my plan and she's getting the gnex when the evo arrives. Its a really nice phone and it will be her first touch screen device so she will be stoked.

I was holding out pulling the trigger on a purchase.. I wanted the Gnex for thep ur experience but at the current prices I had to go 4G LTE.. Best I saw was Wirefly no activation fee, +50$ GW credit on Gnex which brings it to $100 all said and done. The 4G LTE while delayed has no activation fee either, gets a +10$ GW credit, and would be $140.00 after applying everything. I couldn't justify such an old device for $50 less then the 4GLTE all things considered so I got the 4G LTE.
I've always wanted a Nexus device but CDMA is not a fav at Google.. The wait just isn't worth it. Unfortunately I will be waiting a little bit for a pure experience

What Phone Are You Coming From?

What device? What made you want to change to this device? What is your favorite thing about THIS device versus older device? Figured this would help get to know each other a little bit. I will start...
LG Esteem on MetroPCS. Favorite thing about this device over older is that I am back to having a high end HTC device overall once again since the Original Inc. What made me want to change was the fact that I wanted another very high end device and am happy that I did.

I came from my launch-day Evo 4G. Hard to believe it's already been 2 years. . . . It's been a great phone, never had a problem with it. Gearing up to sell it after I take it for one more race next weekend (it's a dusty trail run and I don't want to take my new LTE just to track with RunKeeper and risk it getting dirty and sweaty, since I don't need an activated phone for that the old girl gets to come along for this one).

The GS3 is not wildly different from this device now that the US variant has been announced. It's a bit larger (I'd say bordering on too large, but I could adjust if I had to), and the screen on Samsung devices does look different - not better or worse in my opinion. But it's no killer in performance, even if it had kept the quad-core (this Krait CPU is bomber). I don't see a lot that would sway me now that I have the LTE, and to be honest, after the OG Evo I've been extremely happy with the build quality of HTC. Plus, I didn't have to wait another who knows how long, and isn't the SGS3 going to launch for $299? Or was that just pre-release hearsay?
So, in short, brand loyalty, past experience, and impatience. (Okay, not really impatience, but it is nice to have the LTE now.)
Would the $300 price tag be for the 16GB model or the 32GB model though?

A few questions about sprint

So some of you might know me... Some may not but, I've been developing roms for Verizon's HTC phones for year's, and I think I might want to try a different carrier for awhile and sprint is at the top of my list... Don't get me wrong I love the user base from the Verizon peeps but it just keeps getting smaller and smaller... The last 2 devices I've had Incredible 2 and Rezound just seemed like they died before they got going by that I mean no support other than me and a couple other devs...
So what I'm asking is what are your thoughts about sprints service... And do you think the LTE should be my next device? I've played around with a lot of the new HTC phones and the LTE seems to be better than the other's, so it will most likely be my next phone, but I want to hear what you all think?

I love my LTE and have had Sprint service for nearly 15 years. No complaints here...Sure, the 3G speed isn't that great, but that should change with Network Vision project. I live in Baltimore so I get pretty decent speeds right now, but there are plenty of others that are not.
Customer Service: never had an issue with them
Dropped Calls/Missed Calls: not nearly as many as with AT&T and some others that my friends use. Seems pretty stable.
Data: 3G isn't great, but, it works and is unlimited.
Bills: Never had an issue with Billing
Hope that helps somewhat.
EDIT: I ran your NEWTS RC3 on the EVO 3D and loved it. Couldn't change ROMS after flashing yours because nothing came close...
You should definitely come over to the EVO 4G LTE forums and hook us up. LOL...
Do it newt. Data speeds are pretty decent in major cities, price is right and this phone is a beast. Two best parts: screen and audio quality. I came from the 3d and am glad I left the drama and subparness of that phone behind. Ran your sense 4.0 port at the end of my time with the 3d and loved it. Lets just hope sprint doesn't forget about this device like the 3d. Oh and there's no drama here like the 3d. Come join the party newt, we need more devs like you.
The phone is a beast, sprint is what it is
Would love to see u on this device

I've been with Sprint for 11yrs, it's been a rocky ride at times but they've improved substantially over the last several. I love my LTE but a friend of mine just got the GS3 and I was playing around with it and it's a really nice phone. That being said, the selfish part in me wants as many quality developers as possible committed to the LTE to try and bring development here to the level it was with the OG EVO. Since you're a developer and the phone will likely stay bone stock just long enough for you to root it, it really comes down to specs and personal preference as to design and build quality. LTE is a little lighter and seems a little thinner, GS3 seems a little more soldly built (even with it being all plastic). There's an issue of the LTE bending just above the kickstand due to the aluminum being so thin and weak in that area. IMO the LTE has a slightly better screen but the GS3 screen is still beautiful. GS3 has far more storage available to it and a removable battery. I've actually been thinking of switching to the GS3 just because all I really want is a fully working, solid, stable AOSP build and I have a feeling the GS3 is going to get there first.

I feel the same, my last 4 were Touch Diamond, OG EVO, 3D, and LTE. Honestly, I'd rather have you and as many other developers here as possible to help make this thing greater than it already is.

If your willing to take the sacrifice from insanely fast data to Sprints mediocre data until LTE really starts going, I think you'll see this as a nice upgrade from HTC's previous devices. The build quality is something I didn't expect, because its really that nice. The one thing that I still have yet to get over on this phone, is this beautiful screen.
If you decide to come to the EVO-side I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The EVO LTE is awesome compared to any other phone out there, period. Only draw back on the phone is not being able to take out the battery. Everything else on the EVO destroys the competition. (Well not destroy, just get the phone you won't be disappointed.) Sprints service is better than they get credit for I think. Though they need to work faster on 4G so we can stop getting charged for something we cannot use and so they can stop BSing that it is for data coverages. 3G speed is what you would expect really. Unlimited everything is a big plus. And their customer service is sub par but I think most carriers are.
From what I read here, your the man. Make it happen chief!
Would be good to have you here newt

Word... I WILL NOT buy a phone from another manufacturer. I feel that HTC's build quality is unmatched and honestly I love Sense with Nova instead of Rosie (i know that isn't a popular opinion).
Sprint has been good to me here in Charleston, Wv. I have the OG Evo, the Evo 3D, the HTC Flyer tablet and now the Evo 4G LTE... wouldn't trade this phone for anything currently on the market.
In this area on 3G I seem to average between 1500 and 1700 mbps and that is plenty for me as I am usually on Wifi... I honestly don't care much if 4G even comes to this area and of the handful of dropped calls I have ever had, I was talking to someone on AT&T so I tend to believe that it was on their end.
Sprint service is decent i have had worse t-mobile "cough" phones seen alot nicer on sprint if your an htc fan..excited to see you considering the lte

So long EVO.

hey all, iv been an EVO owner since the OG evo on release date. Sorry to say but i threw in the towel today with my evo lte and bought a S3 on Craigslist and sold my evo to a family member. its been a good run! Im off to the s3 forums for now on.
i did love my lte evo very very much, but i feel like iv had the same phone for 4 years now and wanted to change it up with touchwiz.
Nothing wrong with that, my sister is very happy with her S3. So much so that she has yet to throw a ROM on it. It seems like a pretty good phone
running sense for 4 years got to me. i loved the phone but just felt i needed a change.
the phone runs very smooth, but it has lower benchmark scores than my evo -_-
Yeah...even now its pretty bloated. I usually jump ship as soon as I can, running CM10 with no complaints so far. I'm thinking of trying paranoid next. Like I said my lil sis loves it so far. Now if only I can get her to stop shouting bump me every time she wants to beam something
Youll be back they always come back lol

I left and came back within a month.
GS3 is good but the E4glte has better quality...both phones are awesome tho

I say it comes down to hardware because, who are we kidding, most of us can't wait to flash the latest and greatest on to our phones. All flagship phones have competing spec these days. Multiple core socs, HD screen 4+ inches, a clock speed of 1ghz or more. 512+ ram, etc....some one please take that knife away from wile and bring some bandages
I wouldn't be able to live with Samsung's hardware. The quality isn't there

My parents both have S3s and love them. You really can't go wrong either way. I've always been a fan of HTC though.
Samsung can make a fine tv and maybe a few phones here and there
Sent from my Genesis that does what Nintendon't
I had the gs3 for a few days just out of curiosity...returned for my evo..this weekend I was actually able to use both side by side since my niece has a gs3...don't get me wrong it is nice and does certain things better..like its much louder speaker..but after side by side comparing the evo is better IMO...I think the hype around the gs3 makes ppl believe its better..mine opened apps faster loaded webpages faster took much better pictures and I think the evos screen is far superior ...I notice the pentile without even really looking for it and my screen was much brighter..now I'm.not saying one is much better than the other..bc u cant go wrong with either phone..but I'm sooo tired of hearing how much better the gs3 is when it just isn't ..if it weren't for the extra ram they would have nothing on the EVO
That's what a great marketing team can do, we get crap like some photographer taking pictures of a skydiving model.
Seriously that is one thing HTC could really work on, marketing.

What phone runs smooth? The sg3? or the evo LTE? The benchmarks for both the sg3 and the evo LTE should be kinda close as they have the same processor.
If you are saying that your og evo has higher benchmarks, I highly recommend you start a career as a stand up comedian, because that's one of the funniest things I have ever heard
I have messed with a friends sg3 and it's a nice phone, enjoy!

I'm pretty sure they both use the qualcomm krait s4 soc... I could be wrong but the sprint store reps in my area have said it's the same processor. I'll do some research and update my post. Thanks for the research task, gives me a few moments away from the wife and kids.

And I could be wrong but Samsung has been bragging about their krait tech... and never trust a sprint rep unless you know them lol I over heard one tell a customer htc is made by HP computers and she bought it straight away

Nope, it is the same exact soc krait s4 processor... http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/05/htc-evo-4g-lte-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-sprint/
About the sprint reps, some are knowledgeable, most want the commission. The store in the city I live in is a corporate store, so I'm hoping/assuming they might be more knowledgeable... Prolly not though. I brought my evo shift running running cm7 in a year ago and the rep had no clue. He actually thought it was cool. Lol
