[Q] can my s3 and my mac work together - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there, im a new user. and new to the android world completely. ive been an iphone owner since release. but when the abomination of the iphone 5 was released, and my network provider were demanding £100 for an extra row of apps! i decided it was time for a change. and im so happy i have. android is far superior. and i dont know how ive managed with out.
now i dont know much about rooting and hacking, and im currently reading up on it. how ever the main thing i want from my phone at the moment is a software upgrade EE are being very slow at rolling out the 4.1 update and im still stuck on 4.0 when a lot of my friends are on 4.1 and above. the only computer i have access to is an apple mac ( i know but im a music student and i need logic pro for my course) so my main question is can anyone tell me if i can still root & hack the phone with a mac? what software do i need? and how do i do it.
thanks in advance. jack

Use isyncer available on Google play along with the Mac program downloaded from isyncer's website (Google it) to be able to sync ur phone to your iTunes library. Great app because it copies the exact album art and I tune library tag over

You can install a Virtual Machine mac app with Windows 7. After that mount your phone inside that VM, install drivers for the phone, download the firmware you want and flash with odin.
Good luck.

But you have to be careful, as because of the small patent issues and court cases, your mac will try to send premium SMS to charge you for using Apple patent for peaceful communication with Samsung device

I'm using iSyncr from the Play Store (you can try the free version first if you want, it has some limitations though, I think a song limit or something like that).
It has a client running in the background on your Mac 24/7 and when you connect the phone it starts up and asks you what you want to sync, showing you all the music you have in iTunes.
For other stuff I use the wonderful AirDroid, to which you connect from your browser.
This combination works great for me for normal use, and WiFi transfer speeds are great for normal usage.

i have to say welcome to freedom jack
you are personally the 6th person I know say goodbye to the apple jail
I have all my friend change to android ones they use my sgs3 and they all have macs
like Mr Benthe suggested just before me
so I'll give you the same help
if some one has already suggested "android" sorry I haven't read all of the responses.
if you encounter any issues using adb or sdk editing I can suggest "parallels" for mac you can Google it pretty much embeds xp functionality to any mac so any pc software can be run without any problem
if you install the latest "kies" from Samsung I suggest you do it ones you add parallels as it will work better ones you do that skies from Samsung will look at any backup you did to your iPhone and suggest getting all this settings and ad them to your sgs3
ones you get the handle of these "flashing" rooting and all the mumble jumble
I suggest start with search for you carriers modem and learn it as you'll have some connection issues if it does have a preferred modems . then personally
try stock kernels like dlib jelly bean one of the best stock kernel in my opinion
then go ahead and go crazy with any custom kernel

Bluetooth function on Éclair ?

what are the odds that in the new version of android , the issue with bluetooth file transfer will be fixed ?
doubt it, i dont think its a bug but more a compagny policy.
they dont want you to send apps and games to oher phones
i think we have a better chance with the xda community here for developing/porting a proper bluetooth stack to our hero` s
there is a lot more you can do with a proper bluetooth stack than sending files, you know. so i doubt this is a company policy thing but rather a BIG failure to deliver what has been standard in mobile devices for years now. (especially for handsets in this price range)
coming from the iphone, i learned that all the "BT is necessary" chants were a bit overrated; I didn't know it was not possible until way after I upgraded to the 3G. I never used it or saw the need for it.
In the beginning BT filetransfer was 'cool'; "wow I can send a picture! or a MP3 !!"
But now I would just email it, even if the person is standing next to me.
A2DP I can understand. But all other functions like "cool! I can use my phone as a mouse for my computer!!" for me got old 4/5 years ago.
Still, if people want it, you could just write a program, no?
No, obviously it is not possible to "just write a program" if there is no API for Bluetooth file transfer and there is no information on how to do it without an API.
There are now several programs that can do BT file transfer on other Android phones, but none of them work on the Hero.
And you can use only mail if the receiver can also use mail. My BT carkit certainly can't use mail.

Well, almost true.
There's an app in the market called "Bluetooth File Transfer" which allows you to send and receive files by Bluetooth and doesn't require a rooted phone.
Sounds great, but.... (yes there's a but!)
You can only receive files being sent from another Android user via "Bluetooth File Transfer"
See http://www.medieval.it/content/view/61/85/
Regards,
Dave
Does it work on your Hero? It doesn't on mine (GSM Hero). The market description still says "Currently, doesn't work on HTC Hero and Samsung Galaxy, but we are working on it." (http://www.cyrket.com/package/it.medieval.blueftp)
Same problem with Androbex: "Reported not to work on HTC Hero and Samsung Galaxy. you can try yourself and tell us."
As far as I know, neither the Hero kernel nor a Hero image for the emulator is available at this time, so it is a lot more complicated to develop such things which are not covered by the API.

I have another but on this. It doesn't just have to be to another Android phone, I can easily send to my Sony Ericson & LG & Moto friend's phones.
Although I'm on a rooted G1, so take that with a grain of salt.
However you are right about not working on a Hero.

As I said, it says that you can only *receive* files from another user of this software. I always presumed that sending would be ok!

I installed it on my Hero, and it seems to run ok (i.e. no obvious errors) but as soon as I saw that I can only receive from another phone running this software, I dismissed it. I seldom use BT file transfer anyway, and this restriction would've made it pointless for the limited occasions that I might use it.
I will give it a try today though, and see what happens, but I'm also on a rooted device so this may make a difference.
Regards,
Dave
Ok, when I start the application it tells me that is has successfully started the "Bluetooth file receiving" and "Bluetooth file sharing" service.
However, I tried to pair with my laptop and I got an error message that it couldn't start the OBEX FTP service. So, it looks like it doesn't work at all for devices not running their software. I do wonder though if it would work between two devices running the software simply because it looks like they don't use OBEX FTP.
Regards,
Dave
maybe someone can make a wifi based peer to peer app FTP orso
at least then we can send stuff
I think dismissing it as simply being 'cool', is incorrect.
I know alot of people that arn't 'smartphone' savvy and don't have email accounts that they use on the phone or have internet access on the phone for that matter. They tend to use the phones mostly for (shock horror) making call and taking pics etc.
There have been several instances when they like a picture/video clip or something and want to send/receive via bluetooth.
They are somewhat surprised when I say I can't do that, especially after I've shown them all the other clever things I can do on the phone...
Zuber
Bluetooth
Begin rant:
I know everyone keeps saying you should sync your entire life with Google's servers (as that’s the point of having an Internet device) but there are times when a quick sync with Outlook (or another client) is desirable just to back-up your contacts or to grab a file/contact through the use of Bluetooth. Hell, that’s what the technology was created for!
Yes, I know everything is online with Android, but using BT to sync is something I took for granted with my Win Mobiles and Symbian devices. With me it’s a privacy issue, I don't want my entire life to be blasted off into the ether, transmitted across the globe, stored on a sever (in a country for which server security may not be a top priority i.e. Korea) and back again just to ensure my phone calendar is up-to-date with my computer's calendar.
From my phone in my pocket to the computer sitting less than a foot away on my desk, Bluetooth seems the best solution.
Yes, there's USB but that means plugging in a cable...
End Rant.
If you have a WiFi router (or access point) it's possible to use an ftp server on the hero and an ftp client on the desktop (or vice versa). See FTPServer and SwiFTP Server for ftp servers.
I didn't try aFileSync yet, but from the description it looks nice.
But this doesn't help if you don't have a WiFi router avaliable, although WiFi ad-hoc mode might be possible with android-wifi-tether on rooted phones. And Wifi ad-hoc mode doesn't help if the other end has only Bluetooth.

To be honest, it's probably partially Apples fault as it took them ages to get something half resembling Bluetooth into their iPhones. Given the take up of the iPhone, it does go to show that much of the market can just live without it.
Googles "excuse", way back more than a year ago, was that they hadn't quite finalized the API and so they shipped the G1 with only support for headsets. Skip forward a year, and they've only only added a couple more profiles to their bluetooth stack, which is pretty poor going for a multi-bazillion dollar organization!

True, I know its a feature that (some) of us expect but at the end of the day the Android OS is still in its infancy. Give me Android over Symbian (which I've been using for the last couple of years) any day!
It would be nice to see things like OBEX implemented into the OS (perhaps in a future release?). But for all the small picky things that its missing, Android makes up for its 'downfalls' in a million other ways. I certainly would not switch now, I just hope that Google, HTC and all the freelance Dev's keep up their amazing work.
One final word: I'd still like to Sync with Bluetooth though!
This is not just a cool feature, it is an expected feature. To have a smartphone released without that is ridiculous, in this day and age. Unlike Apple, who have ideological reasons why they dont want it, I dont believe that Google have any reason; it is just a massive slip up, probably because they werent thinking globally.
It is the most starred/wanted issue in the Android bug/development list, higher than anything else which shows that it is pretty important to tech- savvy users as well as the average joe who takes it for granted.
People simply expect this standard functionality to be there. I never fail to be embarrassed when someone asks me to bluetooth a photo to their crappy Nokia and I admit I cannot.
I could on my Jam, I could on my Touch, I could on my Diamond, but I cant on my Hero. Pathetic.
bluetooth obex on donut 1.6
hey i have been looking all over for an up to date blog on android obex development. I notice many of you guys are complaining about not having the capability. Look up Medieval software app that is freeware in the Android Market, and also have a webpage. I have used them for windows mobile. I have seen sites where people have created their own stacks and have directions to help you. I would be interested on learning how to actually do this. I know cupcake had a directory and stack for this. I would like to know if any of you know anything for the donut build. Every time I connect to my pc from medieval via my G1, i get this error "Service not found, you can't connect with target device because it lacks of the obex ftp bluetooth service"....oddly however when i linked up this app it allowed a stack to become visible underneath the vista bluetooth properties on the G1 device. it had handset and file transfer which i selected because it wasnt. Actually as im writing this i just checked again to verify the name and now i have another one! Object push! wow. so i will keep you posted. going to try harder. i think this program will work. thanks
Idea
Correct me if I'm wrong but seeing as the Blueooth standard is open and Android is opensource, how much time/effort/cost would it involve in a 3rd party dev like MoDaCo/Cyanogen implementing additional protocols into the BT stack?
A custom ROM with this feature would be an instant hit. I'd make a donation to anyone developing such a feature.

Well, it can totally be done. Im pretty sure people have made steps to do this and some 1.5 cupcake roms had support. There is many BT stacks out there and are dependent on the more primitive driver, known as the API. The Kernel is the base framework which is chosen for these Roms. Most rom developers like Cyanogen pick a certain one to fulfill an obligation, ex speed, Hero, experimiental. From what I get on here is that many of the top rom developers dont care much about BT and alot of people are waiting for BT 3.0. So in short i behind what you stated and maybe we could start a donation fund towards a developer that would be willing. Maybe theres already someone out there even! Alot is changing with Android, its exploding.

cideko simple box

I recently got my hands on a quite interesting device, a cideko simple box.
Just for the sake of it, I'd like to hack it, and maybe even get a custom rom on it.
It's basically a set-up-multimedia-thingy-box for a TV running android, and it's pretty damn cheap.
Using adb via TCP/IP I was already able to connect and also get a rootshell (yay!)
However, it seems like no firmware files/instructions how to flash are available by the manufacturer (nay!)... I already asked them nicely, let's see what I get back.
You can find the adb bugreport output here if you're curious.
Anyone wants to help?
Florian
Saw this hardware before. 600Mhz, no openGL or any accelleration for games, nothing.
It does play back media files, but that's about it.
Very low-end chipset from Skyviia.. ARMv5TEJ at ~228 bogomips is pretty bad.
Does it support the install of apk files from USB? and does it allow flash on websites?

Did you manage to customise your Simplebox? I bought one and the description said "Install Apps and games via the built in SD card slot (APK files)" but I can't find anything in the manual.

I have one too. I like the device and the air keyboard, plus it was pretty cheap. I was really pleased that SMB/CIFS support worked out of the box and witha few other things, but thats where it stops. The software included is the let down, not the machine itself. Video playback is out of sync 99% of the time until you fast forward and/or rewind then it magically syncs up again, only 1 CIFS connection at a time, the vast majority of apps will not install and those that do fail to run, the video software displays long file names in such a way, that you cannot determine which file is which, etc. I sent Cideko an email asking them to pretty please provide a new update addressing these issues, but I heard nothing back and I sent it months ago.
The picture is good, the device is unobtrusive and if you rename your file appropriately then it is a bearable media streamer, but it could have been the best little cheap media box ever with just a little care and attention. Disappointing that no one is interested in improving it.

SGS2 AT&T + macbook + rooting + plus ?'s

anyone here root with a macbook ? I'm coming from jailbreaking iphones and never had an android phone and was wondering how difficult i'm going to have with updates and apps and rooting in a few days (phone should be here tomorrow), I use to dual boot but I sold my windows OS because I never used it so now I only have a macbook but we do have a home computer but thats down due to the power supply took a dump the other day !
So with SGS2 AT&T + macbook intel I tried to google and I can't find a straight answer to this !
1-can I root ?
2-how much more difficult without windows is it going to be ?
3-should I buy a windows OS and go back to dual boot ?

MacOS will be easier than Windows. It's closer to Linux. So ADB is easier to get up and running I think, and heimdall is easier to get up and running. Note that I think heimdall had some issues with recent revisions of MacOS, and there's supposed to be an update (1.3.1) coming out in a day or two.
With heimdall you've got multiple paths to root. In my opinion the easiest now is to flash my kernel - as soon as the kernel boots it'll autoroot your system partition.
In terms of getting really "down and dirty" with an Android device, the order of easiness is:
1) Linux - because Android itself is a form of Linux, and is open source, Linux is the official development platform for Android. As an example, if you want to compile cyanogenmod from source, it's easiest on Linux.
2) MacOS - because it's much closer to Linux than Windows - it's possible to compile cyanogenmod from source on MacOS, but it's a bit difficult
3) Windows - It's the odd one out. It's the only platform where you need to install drivers for ADB to work, the only platform you need to install drivers for flashing utilities to work, and it's also not possible to compile Cyanogenmod from source and barely possible to compile kernels from source (if at all) if you want to get into the real down-to-the-metal development.
FYI, if you're messing with Android from MacOS, you may want to familiarize yourself with your terminal shell.

You say it's easier using a mac then windows ! I'd bet you never used a mac to do this there isn't many threads or downloads for mac OSX
I read some and there's just too many steps using a mac were as if you used 4 easy steps using windows So if you know an easy step by step that you don't have to use Terminal and a bunch of downloads to get Heimdall working please don't hesitate to post here !
I just rooted my phone last night, and I'm on a Mac. Since I couldn't find any steps for rooting the GS2 on a Mac, I just ran Windows through VMWare Fusion and forwarded the USB connection to the VM. It looks like it worked perfectly, as everything I've tried so far that requires root has ran flawlessly.

I Posted I don't have windows
Are you trying to impress me?
I'm not
Thanks
Unfortunately, I'm a terminal kind of guy. My rooting method was initially developed on a Linux box, and my kernel is always flashed from a Linux box when I develop it.
MacOS is much closer to Linux than Windows is - so yes, it's actually easier if you have basic terminal/shell familiarity.
The only problem is that apparently Heimdall and OSX Lion don't seem to like each other much...
Terminal shell its much easier to use, once you get use to using. The problem is, like most things you have never attempted before it will always seem more complicated than it is.
I have found most tasks I do to be easier and quicker with one exception and that is file/folder navigation, that is one thing where GUI clearly beats terminal command line.

I share your pain man. I actually found that while the MAC method might be easier, it was more practical from a community support perspective, to just install windows on boot camp and use that partition when dealing with rooting.
I know it's not ideal but if you're doing it on a MAC there will be far less of a community on here to support you, given the small percentage of users with macs in general.
I rooted mine in boot camp just by following the directions. You can remove the boot camp partition when done anyhow

I'm confused by your phrasing, lol.
At least you're a smart Apple customer. Most who use Apple computers (best computers on the market), are "fanboys" and end up thinking just because Apple makes a good tablet, or a good computer, that their phones must be the best, and 1 million line up on pre-order day to buy a 1.5 year old model thinking it's going to be any different than the half-baked, crippled iDevice they had before, hehe.
Not really sure where I'm going with that... but yeah, buy a cheap OEM copy of windows. I'd say download a pirated copy, but I don't want to get yelled at on here, so definitely don't download a pirated copy, pirated copies of windows are bad...

Wifi issues on Lion? I have never had an issue. I DO have a big Wifi issue on my Galaxy SII just like the Wifi issues I had on my Infuse 4G. Wish someone would fix that. It's annoying to have 1 bar of wifi when I'm sitting 2 feet from my router, hehe.
Maybe I should try tweaking the frequencies on my routers

Consider yourself lucky then. There was a pretty sizable issue with lion where wifi/network would not be connected to internet when waking computer from sleep. If you google it, there were A LOT of people having problems.
Also, in there Lion update yesterday, the issue is addressed in the changelog directly from Apple, so they were aware of the problem.
For me it was pretty annoying. I tried a bunch of workarounds but none of them worked long term. I was forced to constantly turn wifi on/off whenever it would not connect. Pretty weak!!
I have not had the issue since updating yesterday, lets hope it stays that way
Yeah, I have a Macbook Pro and have been rooted. Command line heimdall is not difficult in the least to use in my opinion. Any questions can be answered by a multitude of us using it.
Btw, its nothing like cyberduck. That was just a FTP interface. This is a completely different thing.
Edit: Off topic, I was having that wifi problem too! I just thought it was my crappy university internet.

I think I need to tweak my settings on my router, I think it's responsible for the spotty wifi on my GSII.

Note not being recognized by Mac

My Samsung Galaxy Note is not being recognized by my Mac. I have the CM10 Nightless ROM on it at the moment. I also have Android File Transfer installed on my Mac.
Why do you have any extra software installed on the mac? Get rid of that it should just pick it up after you mount it. Try different usb ports/cables. My GF's mac picks up my PA CM10 just fine. Try that?
Mac address issue in the CM rom ???
Check the Mac address field in your network settings in the rom to confirm that you have the correct Mac address......g

I believe they are referring to an Apple Mac issue, not a MAC address issue.

I havent connected a cable to my mac/gnote since I rooted it months ago..
its your android phone saying its time to dump the mac and upgrade to a pc
but there is some special way MTP connects to a mac, search google for it.

if you want to think about it that way sure... or you can think of it this way.
custom built pc to your liking, install win/lin/osx. SAVE TONS OF MONEY
OR
spend 2000$+ extra to have an apple stamp on your tower.
i dont see how buying a pc is downgrading when you can do so much more with it
thats like saying "you bought an android? whyd you downgrade from an iphone...*
well, after having pc's for 20 years, custom building most of them, BTW, and dealing with windows builds that ranged from horrible, to ok, I decided to go MAC in 2006; things were great at first, but the last 2 OSX releases, Lion, and now Mountain Lion have been major disappointments to me, let alone my disgust for the childish lawsuits and other bull that Apple is now focused on, instead of building better products..
I'll probably go back to windows machines, once windows 8 is fully out there..
BTW, my custom made PC's were always more than $2000.00!!
Sorry about hijacking this thread with PC "Stuff"!
2nd post in this thread will help you out

I would really look into using airdroid though I have used that since I first downloaded it , dont connect with cables anymore !!
I was afraid that this might turn into a PC vs Mac thread haha. I'll look into the over the air method when I get home. Thanks for all the suggestions and help

Its a known issue with JB and Mac. If you use TWRP go that route for a USB connection. Its really easy and a lot quicker than over the air.

I'm working on android for this thing... LK bootloader doesn't want to boot yet
I used till this january.
It was a great phone and it would still be if they didn't abandoned/stop updating their cool features.
As there weren't any new apps released or updates to the apps already in the market, I moved to android.
Microsoft forgot why they are nº 1 in PCs and why android is nº 1 in Smarthphones.
It's because you have continuity, its the ability to the different OS's being able to run older and new applications.
I need navifirm for lumia 800 im not able to download that some1 plz link it TY
Does anyone know working link to Rainbow mod?
hEY
Guilty as Charged
I still use it, and I'm still in Love with it ever since day one. Yes it's a sad fact that there's zero support for it now, however, there are some features in it that are still Killing it and in my opinion a thousand times better than any newer phone on any OS,, without further ado these features are:
1- The People integration for Facebook which still works great.
2- The Music Hub with all its in & outs especially the podcasts.
3- The Office & OneNote hub, syncs all my documents from PC just as it should, and of course I can view/edit it on the go.
4- and last but not least the Brilliant "Email integration", I have all my Emails synced and it works Amazingly.

If I could have some people on my Android4lumia team interested, I could get Android running on this guy. I had LK bootloader, or basically fastboot commands
i want to but my device is not working
i really want to get back to lumia 800 but its dead and now i want to repair it can some one please help me to do so
ps:- i am noob at repairing
im still using Nokia Lumia 800 but unfortunately i did factory reset and now unable to download apps from Windows store as windows already shut it down. hope i can flash android rom om that
I can't download any app now
it always said that my Windows Live ID is unavailable or some error code
I loved the phone when I bought it in 2012, but for some reason M$oft decided that the best approach to sell their phones was to introduce new phones and abandoning the previous ones!
The only reason Apple is so successful even with their crappy phones is because the old users are not left out. Sure, Apple tries things to force users to upgrade, but still doesn't abandon the ones that don't.
I lost 30K INR within 8 months of buying the phone, when it was (s)crapped. That is no way to do business.
Still, I gave the phone to my Father and he kept using it till 2016 when it dropped from his hand and achieved martyrdom
I just started using my old Lumia 800 again. Mainly for listening to podcasts and music on Deezer app, which surprisingly still works !
Zune app is waaaaaaay better than any audio app on android, imo.
Reading on Kindle app is fine too, although lacking all the modern features.
So many good apps on that phone, a shame the app store is not supported anymore!
Too bad the battery is near dead.

I was too optimistic. Deezer refuses to launch now. Goes back to home screen mid-launch.
Anyone knows how to fix it?

Is there any chance, that this is happening? I'd love to use my Lumia 800 again. It's the most beautiful phone, I ever had.
I still miss the persistent calendar notification on lockscreen
Still using it on daily basis as music player, to stream music via Bluetooth to my Amazon Echo Dot or BT headphones.
But I miss an app to play music/videos from YouTube, and now that the Store is down, I see no way at all to sideload anything. I am not going to install a custom rom. Again, with the Store down, I can't update apps or reinstall factory stuff, so the risk to mess things is high and I don't wanna loose my Lumia which still runs flawlessly.
Yup. As my second nr in car me player
