I found the page for the PayPal app on the Windows Phone website because it doesn't show up in the store on my phone. After doing some Googling, I found that PayPal has been updated to support WP8. However, when I click Install on the page and log into my Windows Live account, it says :
Code:
Can't get app
You can't download this item because it is either unavailable or blocked by your My Family settings. You or a parent can change the settings in My Family to see if that solves the problem.
Then, when I go back to the app page while I'm logged in, it says "This app is no longer published" where the Install button should be.
I just got my Lumia today, so I have little experience with it after coming from Android. Is this because the Lumia 920 doesn't support the PayPal app yet?
Edit: Judging from the reviews, it seems that they would have pulled the app for bugfixes because it was crashing, but they obviously haven't because there's still constant reviews being posted.
I was able to install PayPal 3-4 days ago when unboxing my Lumia 920. Yesterday I reset the default settings and today PayPal is visible from the "App highlights" on the Lumia. I however get the same error when selecting the app.
When I go to store on the phone, the PayPal app can't be found. I have tried switching my phone to both Finnish and US regional settings as it seems all apps aren't available on all regions.
Edit: The marketplace/store on the Finnish region says "this app is no longer published". So all we can do is wait I guess...
Edit's edit: then again the whole marketplace is 500 - ISE at the moment so this well describes how good the app base and functionality on the WPs is. I have never had this many problems in the first 4 days of using a new phone as I have with the WP8.
I haven't really had many problems at all. The app situation is somewhat dismal, but it appears to be picking up steam. The rest of the phone is so good though, it far outweighs the boringness of android, and the force close issues I had on my nexus.

Don't get me wrong; I agree completely. Using my phone from a business only point of view. Windows Phone 8 is so much smoother than Android despite the bugs it and the apps currently have.

I have the Xbox Music pass and have been able to download music for offline play on my Windows 8 PC and Surface RT.
However I am unable to do anything except stream from my Lumina 920. My Microsoft account shows the 920 as an authorized device.
Anyone have any ideas or gotten this to work?

First thing I would ask, is your Xbox music account linked to the Microsoft account used for login on the phone?
When I go to the Xbox Music Store on the phone, all I see are options to download. Tap the song, it asks if I want to download, I hit download, and I'm done.
Yes all devices are linked and verified on the account website.
I am able to download individually but my tablet and PC stay synced
and will automatically download or remove songs. I should not have
to select each song to download on the phone.

I guess what I meant was, when you setup your phone, did you use the same Login as on the other devices....that is associated with Xbox music?
The actions you describe indicate the account on the phone is not the same one used on your xbox music.
For myself, I am noticing strange things with my accounts. I am seeing the correct things, I can download, but, things like playlists do not have the correct number of songs. Owned CD's are not visible on the phone, even though they sync with Xbox music, The entire music experience, though XBOX music is inconsistent.
I just hard reset my device. I added no music. I simply used xbox music. It should make available to me, everything that is currently synced in the Xbox Music Cloud. My playlist lists 83 songs. On my laptop that same playlist is 303 songs. My laptop includes the new CD, RED, by Taylor Swift. I ripped it to the laptop. It is not included in XBOX Music Cloud for some reason. Hence, it is NOT available on my Phone.
So, even though your situation appears to be an account setup issue, I would not for a second, think it could not be just issues with the new XBOX syncing scenarios. This situation also existed early on with WP7 and Zune too.
Hi,
I picked up the 920 this weekend and I too haven't been able to figure out how to connect my 920 to my Windows 8 Pro.
I'm trying to sync up and download my music to 920 from my music library - thinking the same as I did with the Zune client and WP7.x. I tried downloading the Windows Phone App for Desktop beta but it will not install. After I download it, at the install dialog, after the Help make Windows Phone app better, the install does nothing. The Install button is grayed out.
I thought hat using the desktop app would allow me to download my music but no luck.
Sorry for "hi-jacking" this thread but I'd like to know how to resolve this (adding music to my 920 in "bulk").
Thanks

It should work.
The tool isn't in beta anymore...it was released last week. Make sure you have the correct one. The tool is not as graceful as the Zune tool, and should only move existing music to your wp8.

Thanks for the reply. You know, I didn't think about the Windows Phone app from the Store. I am so used to the classic desktop app (like the Zune client), I forgot about the "Store" app.
With that said, when I plug in my 920, I get a "Your phone is having troubles" error message. I tried powering off, changing cables, ports, etc. but nothing.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
This issue seems to be widespread and I assume MS will pick it up/fix it soon.
Have been reading about this exact Issue on a lot of news sites.

Also keep in mind, that various news sites often report the same thing. I've not seen or heard of this issue.
Consider this. Do a back up of your device, then hard reset it. Try again. People not hard resetting their devices out of box, do have a higher rate of failure than those that don't.
Plus, with backup in place, its not really that much of PITA to get back up running.

Sorry, there is 1 more thing to try with this.
Try going to xbox.com...or any Microsoft account site, and simply, change your password. See if that does not help.
I recall this recall I did indeed see this message on my phone. But not only on my phone, but every place xbox related that I happened to looking at...I was doing a lot of XBOX Music reading. I connected to chat...eventually, they told me to change my password and immediately all the messages on all the sites went away, and I was able to connect.
Here's the issue...your WP8 device must be set up using your zune/xbox live ID as the default in order for "seamless" use and more importantly downloading of music etc. You can add your other live accts after and have you email/contacts etc...but you can't use another live ID for the default and have XBox/zune working with downloads. This is the same issue on W8 however on the W8, you can work around it by using a local acct and let Xbox/zune log in as your subscription acct. For WP8 though, there is no such workaround.
This plagued me in WP7 and is still here in 8. Don't ask me why I can't just "change my xbox/zune liveid and still have my history/purchases." MS really needs to resolve this but until then...this is the reality and above is how to get it to work with xbox/zune and have your other liveids all on the same device.
Hope thus helps!

How's this different from other competing phones? Android, you have to log in with a specific account to get the goodies. I believe the same with Apple.
Since the premise of primary login, linked screens and services is what Microsoft is trying to achieve, allowing an alternative to accessing these services on a device...doesn't make sense to me. But that's just my opinion.
Here is how the problem presented itself for me.
Lumia 900 for about a year now. Over 1000 songs downloaded via zune pass (not purchased). My PC is windows 7. Sync all my songs between my pc and my lumia 900. Bought lumia 920. Plugged it in, downloaded new windows phone app for my pc. It did sync all my music from my Zune app on my pc to the new windows phone app on my pc. Then i proceeded to sync all my music to my shiny new lumia 920. All my music that I had now will not play on my 920 because of the DRM message.
All music that I ***PURCHASED*** works just fine because i purchased the DRM rights as opposed to "renting" them w/ my zune pass subscription.
Music that i have downloaded directly to my new lumia 920 from the xbox music store will play perfectly fine. Issue is w/ old content from my pc.
Funny you mentioned the album Red. Was in my mustang using sync having my friend play with phone. She picked Red but it only did a 30 second clip. Double checked with other artists and am good. Then I remembered not all artists or maybe albums have a license for streaming. It has always been this way. I am not seeing all 26 gb of songs yet showing up on my 920 so don't know if it is still synching content.
Hi everyone
I'm looking forward to buy a new phone and i'm stuck between lovely lumia 920 and iphone 5
Can u guys give me a quick review about negative points of this phone? I mean in your own opinion.
And what are possible ways to install apps ,free or paid, on this phone?
Tnx so much
Sent from my E15i using xda premium
I am going to answer simply becuase I am courteous. The MS store is just like the Android Market or the iPhone app store. There are paid apps and free apps. Although most of the better stuff has to be paid for and the prices run from about 2 bucks and up.
Negative points? Hmm let me think...... It's not an iPhone.. Seriously, why would you want to be a sheeple? Nearly everyone and their mother owns an iPhone. Be original..
Seriously though our views of this phone are all subjective.. For example if you read some of the gripes posted such as the light leak which only shows from and extreme angle that you would never look from, or the creaking sound when you press on or flex the case which you should not be doing, or the shade of difference between the white of the display and the capacitive button back lights. These to me are all trivial things and just sounds like disgruntled buyer having remorse for some reason and now are picking the phone apart.
For me who has owned several models of HTC, Motorola, Nokia, and have had experience helping to program and update some Samsung devices, I have to say the L920 is the best built, fastest and smoothest operating phone I have seen yet.
My only beef with the phone which i have posted a thread about is it's lack of having a Flash Player. You can not view embedded Flash media in websites. To view Youtube you have to install a third party app. Adobe no longer supports mobile devices as of last year. So this phone was built with the anticipation of all sites converting to HTML5 and doing away with Flash. However that may be some time and until sites you like convert, you may not be able to view them on this phone if the have flash content. Is this a deal breaker? For some maybe. For me had I known this before I bought it, it would have been a deal breaker. But I am now stuck with it and will just have to wait till YT and other site convert if they ever do. The plus is that no phone created past last year will have the ability to view flash with out third party apps. So this may prompt sites to convert faster.
actually, to view Youtube video, you don't really need to install third party app (MetroTube for example), YouTube mobile site support HTML5 itself, just like VEVO, VIMEO, ... Just browsing YouTube via IE on your phone and enjoy your favorite apps.
About installing apps, there are some ways (easy to use):
- using WindowsPhone (WP) store app: find your app and choose install.
- using WP store (web version):
+ find your app, choose install -> app will be sent to your phone (wirelessly) and installed automatically.
+ download app, copy to SD card and install from your phone.
- unlock your phone and install any apps you could find on the internet.
Hey guys
So today I decided to give the Windows phone a shot. Been an avid Android user and follower since it started But decided that I should really give the other operating systems a shot. I just went and got myself a Lumia 925 and if I'm correct that phone is T-Mobile's variant of the 920 correct? I didn't see a thread for the 925 so I think this is where I belong. So with that here are a few questions I have before I dive into my brand new 925.
Just briefly looking through the forum here, I noticed some ROM's here. Are these different versions of the WP software or are these developers personal tweaks to it? I know with Android depending on what phone you have, you can root it and install the latest version of Android on it, currently 4.3, even if your phone prior is only at 4.1.2.
My other question is what apps does everyone here recommend on getting. I know the app market here is really lacking and its a total shame about that. I am pretty integrated into the whole google network (Gmail, Drive, Music, G+, etc). I use some social media apps but those are't too important to me. Suggestions for other apps would be amazing.
Really looking forward in giving this a test drive and in advance thanks for all of your help! :highfive:
no major differences in many variants of same versions... just every operator have own branded versions of firmware.. no way to root or unlock phone (not talk about SIM unlock)
phone market have enough good applications...
but Google and Microsoft have "cold" war and dont except major Google apps on WP platform
Nokia have own alternative for maps, HERE bunch of apps (Maps, Drive, Transit and City Lens) and very good Nokia Music service...
first at all install SysApp Pusher to easy access to Nokia apps and system apps updates
also check for Store Deals and myFreeApp to get notifications about promotional period of pay apps to get it for free
for Instagram use 6Tag
also check guides on http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8
for offline navigation you can use Nokia Drive+ or pay for Navigon USA, Garmin StreetPilot or CoPilot GPS (if you have legal licences you can use it on CoPilot without purchase new)
GetThemAll to download stuff from websites (videos, etc.)
Stop the Music! for stopping (kill) media player (or free alternative from market, just use search)

925 is enhanced version of 920 regarding camera, but without wireless charging integrated and also slimmer due this fact
Don't try 920 ROMs on 925 and vise verse..you will brick your phone.
Don't switch. Android might be slower but it has so much more to offer. There is no free video player on the Windows 8 phone. Nothing that can play MKV for free. There is no built in flash support so sites on the web that still use flash don't work. That is an issue with all mobile devices now though. You can't block unwanted calls. There is no app that allows you to do that as there is no app that is allowed access to the kernel thanks to MS protection Nazi's. As soon as my contract ends next year I am going back to G4. This phone is just locked down too tight.

Actually in the amber update that is now a built in ability to block both calls and text from specific numbers, though you have always had the ability to save a number and set a blank ringtone for it.
Most of the videos I play are either podcast or streamed via PlexApp both of which work great, and if not, you can always convert them using Zune, granted it is a bit of work.

That's what it makes it so fun fiddling with it!
dont forget about the wifi calling that t-mobile has.. while the other ROMs do not has it.
Since the Amber Update Gmail works fine, as does Google Calendar, both in the Native WP apps.
Get Metrotalk for Google Voice. It takes a few moments to configure but once you do it works as well as Google Voie for IOS including the ability to call from the App.
I too just switched from Android and I'm still on the fence. Most of the Apps I use are here but the are some near dealbreakers like Sirius/XM and my IP Camera app that are not present and probably never will be.
On the other hand, there are a lot of nice included features like SkyDrive and Nokia Pro Cam. Unfortunately, the choice is not clear cut. You have to figure out whats important to you.
I myself was hell bent on being a one device guy. Had the Galaxy Note and Note 2 so I'd have EVERYTHING all at once. Now with the Lumias (especially the 1020) getting such great cameras I may stick with Windows Phone. I do still have an Android Tablet though to get me by.
Then again, Sony's stuff at IFA like the Z1 or the QX cameras are so intruiging. Though, the Lenses won't work with Wndows Phone, or any phone bigger than 5 inches.
So, once again, I'm left scratching my head. Do I go back to the best all around device like the Galaxy Note 3? Or do I stick with the best camera? Or do I compromise, get a middling Android Phone like the S3 or Optimus G so I can slap one of the Sony QX lenses on it? So many decisions!
Hi
My father got a bunch of Lumia 800s as some sort of gift when he switched ISP contract but basically don't use them and asked me whether they might be able to run Android.
The only thing substantial that came up while searching was this youtube clip:
youtu.be/f4b_5i2u_HM
but no instructions or links to further resources. It is relatively recent, so I guess it should mean that there are some data on it somewhere?
That's only an app that makes it look like You use Android on it. A skin. Got nothing to do with Android. I was trying few of these apps. Just to check their look. Check the Marketplace. It's full of these apps. Not a big thing and they are good for nothing.

I know Haret. It was made to run Android on Windows Mobile. Not Windows Phone. I was using it on several WM devices I had.
The app that is shown in the mentioned video is the FunFroid app, that can be found in MarketPlace and got nothing to do with the Android OS itself. Just an app that looks like an Android homescreen and can launch some apps. Not Android apps, only the WP system apps like Phone, Browser, Messages. It only contains shortcuts to them.
I have been developing a remote control client for Windows Phone for a while now. I am now opening up beta program so that it can be tested heavily. It'd be great to have feedback from the XDA community. Here are a few details and some FAQs about beta testing. If you're absolutely sure that you want to be a tester, jump directly to the bottom of this post.
What should I expect from this beta?
Well, you should expect what you generally expect from beta software. Cutting edge, burning hot software with new features and a few bugs here and there. Specifically, you might run into some memory management issues, but they shouldn't stop you from trying it out.
What do I need to be a beta tester?
Patience and tolerance: You should understand that the app might behave unexpectedly sometimes.
A Windows Phone 8 device: That's where you test the app.
XBMC: You need to have XBMC running somewhere on your network. That's what you're trying to control using this app.
A Microsoft account: You will need to have a Microsoft Id associated with your phone to be a beta tester.
How do I become a beta tester?
Just give me your Microsoft Id here. I won't sell it to anyone. I won't spam either.
How do I report issues?
You may create an issue on Github here.
You may post it on this thread.
You may contact me over the twitter at @akshay4000.
At times Google+ can be a good choice.
Can I contribute to the code?
I'm glad you asked. Here is the Github repo: https://github.com/akshay2000/XBMCRemoteWP. Fork it, fix something, make some commits and make a pull request. I'll be glad to take contributions. Just make sure that the code is pretty.
Again, here is the link if you want to be a beta tester: http://bit.ly/1iW5c3z
Thank you all for the support.

Just pushed an update. Check back in a few hours. That should fix it. Oddly enough, same app worked fine when deployed from my local machine, but crashed when downloaded from marketplace.
So, if this new version crashes, we know that store is messing with it.

Sorry about that! At this point, you're probably losing the patience, but I've pushed another update. And I'm certain that this will solve it. Please, give it a try. Version should be 1.0.0.2 - the latest one.
Edit: Just checked. The latest version goes without any crash. Can you verify that?

If you have password set up on XBMC, the app might not connect. Update is being pushed out which will fix this. Update the app in a few hours. Sorry for the trouble. Till then you can test the app by disabling the passwords.
